PeCOD® Case Study #09 Municipal Wastewater Treatment
General Project Information
Client Municipal WWTP
Location
GTA Ontario Canada
About the Client The plant serves 1.2 million people of the GTA with a daily capacity of 163,500 m3 of wastewater. The WWTP uses three trunk sewers for conventional and biosolids treatment. Final effluent BOD ranges between 2- 30 mg/L.
Introduction
A municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) located in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) currently utilizes Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) from a 24-hour composite sample to monitor their discharge to Lake Ontario and meet compliance standards. The Challenge
The BOD method run on the 24-hour composite from the final effluent of the WWTP is a 5-day BOD test. The samples are sent out to an external lab for analysis, which creates a 7 day turn around for results. This does not provide sufficient time to respond to high organic loads being discharged to Lake Ontario. The delay in response to sample results is also reflected in the sampling frequency, since a 24-hour composite sample does not provide insight as to when the activity in the WWTP may have occurred.
The Solution
MANTECH partnered with the WWTP to install a Real Time L100 PeCOD® at the final effluent to monitor Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) on an hourly basis. The PeCOD® is proven to be an excellent BOD screening tool, providing accurate BOD estimates in just minutes. The PeCOD® and BOD correlation is stronger than similar dichromate COD approaches due to the fact that PeCOD® does not require pre-digestion of the sample.

Positive Monitoring Applications
The PeCOD® can provide real-time regulatory screening for compliance and optimization of wastewater treatment processes. The green chemistry PeCOD® COD system can be integrated anywhere along the wastewater treatment process for fast analysis, ease of use, safe operation, and accurate results to aid in financial and environmental sustainability.
The Result
The PeCOD® analyzed the same effluent that was collected in the 24-hour BOD sample and was able to capture several events in real time. The below figure displays hourly COD from the PeCOD® on the left axis and daily composite BOD on the right in mg/L. The data was collected from June to August 2016 with BOD values plotted when the sample was collected.
The PeCOD® was successfully able to measure known events in real time that were occurring at the WWTP. One event was observed on July 25th 2016 when an aeration and final tank were taken offline for preventative maintenance creating a large load of organics. The PeCOD® immediately spiked above 150 mg/L on July 25th whereas the BOD result of 20 mg/L was not known until the beginning of August.

Clean Harbors is an industrial wastewater treatment facility in
Guelph, Ontario. The facility utilizes highly refined, chemical precipitation processes, which remove heavy metals, suspended solids, and organics to generate safe effluent for discharge into municipal sewer systems. Wastewater is treated to meet municipal discharge requirements for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5). Since BOD is a 5-day test, the results cannot be used to continuously monitor organic load. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is used as a fast assessment of organic contamination. A correlation study is then used to determine the relationship between COD and BOD5.
The PeCOD® COD method is well suited for use in an
industrial wastewater treatment facility due to its rapid analysis and safe operation. COD monitoring offers the operational feedback necessary for optimizing production, thereby reducing the consumption of raw materials, energy, and sewer discharge costs.
PeCOD® Case Study #02 Industrial Wastewater
Figure 1: A scatterplot demonstrating a strong correlation between PeCOD® COD and CODCr for incoming hauled wastewater from a variety of industries.

Results in Figure 1 are from a single Clean Harbors treatment plant, servicing multiple different
industries, including automotive, manufacturing, primary steel, chemical, and dairy facilities. Samples were prepared by centrifugation to settle solids then mixed in a 1:49 ratio with RED range PeCOD® electrolyte. The soluble COD was analyzed by the PeCOD® COD method and compared against the dichromate COD (CODCr) and BOD5 methods.
The objective of this study was to determine if a correlation exists between PeCOD® COD and traditional methods (e.g. CODCr and BOD5). The results indicated a strong correlation between PeCOD® COD and CODCr for incoming hauled wastewater (Figure 1). Similarly, the results from treated wastewater samples taken from various industries, demonstrated a strong correlation between PeCOD® COD and BOD5 methods (Figure 2).
Upon completion of the study, Clean Harbors invested in the PeCOD® COD Analyzer, complete with autosampler, immediately putting it into production and replacing the CODCr method. The key advantage for Clean Harbors in adopting the PeCOD® COD Technology, was the speed of the test. The wastewater treatment facility can obtain critical information on incoming loads within 15 minutes, allowing for quick decision making and more efficient treatment. Prior to unloading, a COD measurement is obtained using the PeCOD®. If the result is above the acceptable limit, the truck can immediately be diverted to an incinerating plant. However, due to the nature of the CODCr method, results are not available for approximately 3 hours. In that time, the truck would have unloaded the wastewater and left the facility. Avoiding this time delay, eliminates the requirement for subsequent storage and hauling costs. Furthermore, incoming wastewater that is below plant sewer discharge limits can be quickly discharged, thereby saving on chemical and energy costs. The PeCOD® also provides a reliable estimate of BOD, which is required for compliance with municipal standards. Historically, the BOD results were received by Clean Harbors 8 days after sampling. Now the facility can obtain a daily real-

3
time BOD estimate, ensuring peace of mind with regards to their treated discharge effluent. By investing in a PeCOD®, Clean Harbors continuously monitors the organic load of influent and effluent
wastewater, to optimize treatment processes. The speed and accuracy of the PeCOD® COD method has led to substantial financial savings, thereby increasing profitability. In addition, Clean Harbors improved the health and safety of the workplace and their employees by eliminating the use of dichromate, mercury, and concentrated acid required with the CODCr test. With the PeCOD® investment, Clean Harbors demonstrated financial, sustainable, and environmental stewardship, which benefits the community as a whole. peCOD ANALYZEROXYGEN DEMAND ANALYSIS FOR
SOURCE & TREATED DRINKING WATERS
The revolutionary peCOD Analyzer technology measures the chemical reactivity and associated oxidative changes in Natural Organic Matter (NOM). As a result it is more sensitive than TOC and UV254 to changing NOM concentrations. The peCOD method follows ASTM International method D8084, and is included in Health Canada’s Natural Organic Matter in Drinking Water (2018) guideline.
NOM is a critical target for drinking water treatment.
It can be associated with:
• Taste, odour, colour issues• Coagulant, oxidant demand• Disinfection by products (DBP) precursors
NOM compounds are known to react with common disinfectants to produce harmful and potentially carcinogenic DBPs.
Traditional NOM surrogates (UV254, SUVA, TOC, DOC) may not be suitable for assessing NOM removal in all cases, as they are often calibrated or “tuned” to the specific site matrix. peCOD is independent of the matrix, therefore variations in NOM are clear and can be acted upon.
