    equipment

A risk assessment should be conducted before operating plantto identify any hazards that may arise and the controlmeasures to be implemented. The risk assessment shouldconsider at least the following:(a) that appropriate guards, including roll-over protective

devices (ROPS) are fitted(b) that the safe working load is displayed(c) record of testing, maintenance, servicing and repair(d) the general mechanical/electrical condition of plant,

especially any wear or damage that may effect safeoperation

    (e) compliance with relevant legislation and Australianstandards

    (f) specific controls to prevent entanglement or workers beingtrapped between moving parts.

It is a legal requirement that all plant such as excavators, tractors, etc used for lifting must have their safe working loadsdisplayed and maintained.

If the function or condition of plant represents an immediaterisk to health and safety, operation should cease and the plantshould be withdrawn from use until a risk assessment andappropriate control measures are implemented.

5.1 Routine InspectionRegular planned inspection and adequate maintenance shouldbe carried out to ensure safe operation of all plant used onexcavation work, whether leased, hired or owned. Bothmechanical and electrical testing should be done. For furtherinformation refer to the WorkCover NSW publication Code ofPractice: Electrical practices for construction work. Thefollowing checks should also be carried out:

    (a) Daily checks: general condition and maintenance of theplant should be checked daily by the person doing theexcavation work.

    (b) Regular checks: the plant should be inspected by acompetent person on a regular basis, or at least everymonth.

5.2 Repairs and maintenanceThe contractor using the plant should implement themanufacturers recommendations. Repairs should be carriedout by a competent person and in accordance with thedesigners or manufacturers requirements.

Some hazardous substances have exposure standards thatmust be observed. This may be particularly relevant forsubstances that are applied as a spray. Details of any exposurestandards are set out in the manufacturers MSDS.

For further information about using hazardous substances referto the WorkCover NSW publication Code of Practice ForControl of workplace hazardous substances.
