This PowerPoint demonstrates the ways the ‘Wasted Words’ music video conforms and

challenges the codes and conventions of typical music videos in the ‘Indie Pop’ music genre and

other real media texts.

The top left image is a screenshot of the establishing shot taken from our music video, ‘Wasted Words’. By promoting the title of the band at the beginning of the music video we are using the music video as a promotional tool for the band. We took this inspiration from The Neighbourhood’s music video ‘Sweater Weather’ and George Ezra’s video ‘Cassy O’ ‘.

The top image is a screenshot from the establishing shot from the narrative element of the music video. Having followed Wes Andersons's colour palettes (the bottom picture is an example from his work) that he uses in his feature films, we colour coordinated the wallpaper, props and costumes to conform to his ideas. There is a relationship between the music and the visuals (with visuals either illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.)

The Philip Hue’s advert inspired us to explore the different use of lighting , which is an important aspect in most music videos as it creates mood and atmosphere. The song Wasted Words is an upbeat indie pop song that has elements of techno. So we used bright lighting throughout the narrative element and pulsed the lightbulbs during the chorus to create intensity. In the advert we liked the used of hanging lightbulbs and included this in our performance element.

Close Ups of the lead singer It was important to include these shots as a convention, as our intention is to sell the image of the band.“There is a demand on the part of the record company for lots of close-ups of the main artist/ vocalist.’’ – Andrew Goodwin (1992)

The Narrative

Particular music genres may have their own video style. During our research into the ‘Indie Pop’ genre, we found that exploring different elements, such as a narrative story, were important. We then discovered that following a romantic story line

When exploring how to expose the band’s logo in the music video, we got inspiration from a piece of art from The Tate Modern. We later researched different music videos that explored similar ideas. As the Lion represents as a branding logo for the band, so we have also included similar images of lions on our official website.
