Objective of the Codex Alimentarius Commission

Dual objective/mandate •  Protecting health of consumers

•  Ensuring fair practices in food trade

Achieved through its standards, codes of practice, guidelines and other recommendations

Codex interest in animal feeding

•  Recognizes that animal feed contributes to production of safe food

•  Modern approach to food safety

•  Preventing the entry of hazards at early stage of the food chain

•  Established two ad hoc Task Forces

•  Now work on animal feeding is carried out by Codex committees within their mandate

Codex recent and ongoing work relevant to animal feeding

Committee on Contaminants in Foods (CCCF)

•  Code of Practice for Weed Control to Prevent and Reduce Pyrrolizidine Alkaloid Contamination in Food and Feed (CAC/RCP 74-2014)

•  Code of Practice for the Reduction of Hydrocyanic Acid (HCN) in Cassava and Cassava Products (CAC/RCP 72-2013)

Ongoing work

•  General Standard for Contaminants and Toxins in Food and Feed (CODEX STAN 193-1995)

•  Revision of the Code of Practice for the Prevention and Reduction of Mycotoxin Contamination in Cereals (CAC/RCP 51-2003)

•  Discussion Paper on an Annex for Ergot and Ergot Alkaloids to CAC/RCP 51-2003

Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods (CCRVDF)

Ongoing work

•  MRLs for veterinary drugs (ivermectin, zilpaterol hydrochloride, teflubenzuron, lasalocid sodium)

•  Risk management recommendations for veterinary drugs for which no ADI and/or MRLs has been recommended by JECFA due to specific human health concern (gentian violet)

•  Discussion paper on unintended presence of residues of veterinary drugs in food commodities resulting from the carry-over of drug residues into feed

•  Guidelines for the Control of Taenia saginata in meat of domestic cattle (CAC/GL 85-2014)

•  Guidelines for the Control of Non-typhoidal Salmonella spp. in beef and pork meat (to be adopted by CAC39)

•  Guidelines on the Application of General Principles of Food Hygiene to the Control of foodborne parasites (to be adopted by CAC39)

Ongoing work

•  New Work on the Revision of the General Principles of Food Hygiene (CAC/RCP 1-1969) and it’s HACCP Annex

Committee on Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification Systems (CCFICS)

•  Principles and Guidelines for the Exchange of Information Between Importing and Exporting Countries to Support the Trade in Food (to be adopted by CAC39)

•  Revision of the Principles and Guidelines for the Exchange of Information in Food Safety Emergency Situations (CAC/GL 19-1995)

•  Revision of the Guidelines for the Exchange of Information Between Countries on Rejections of Imported Food (CAC/GL 25-1997)

Ongoing work

•  Discussion paper on the use of electronic certificates by Competent Authorities and migration to paperless certification

Antimicrobial Resistance

•  Resolutions of WHO and FAO on antimicrobial resistance and WHO Global Action Plan

•  The next session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (June 2016) will consider proposals for new work in relation to antimicrobial resistance

Conclusion

•  Work on animal feeding is continuing in Codex

•  Feed sectors should actively participate and contribute to the “feed-related” work in Codex

•  Important to provide information and data to allow Codex to take into account animal feed
