The Ombudsman’s Corner – May 2015
Welcome to the Ombudsman’s Corner – a monthly addition to the newsletter that highlights your Colorado Ombudsmen. Colorado ESGR has 11 ombudsmen willing to assist service members, their families and employers with understanding the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act or USERRA. Ombudsmen help mediate service-related disputes.
Colorado ombudsmen have all attended 3-day training provided by National ESGR; several have been to advanced training. This training is required to be an ombudsman.
Have you chatted with a service member who is unsure about USERRA rights and responsibilities and their employment situation? Ombudsman can assist! Please advise service members to contact National ESGR at www.esgr.mil and click on the “Request Assistance” link on the right side of the webpage. This starts the mediation process. A case will be initiated and forwarded to a Colorado ombudsman who will then contact the service member.
Thank you for supporting ESGR!

SEMIFINALISTS FOR DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE’S TOP EMPLOYER AWARD NAMED
150 Employers Selected from 2,960 Nominations
WASHINGTON – Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DoD) office, has selected 150 employers as semifinalists for the 2015 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.
The Freedom Award is the DoD’s highest honor for employers that provide extraordinary support to their Guard and Reserve employees. For a complete list of Freedom Award semifinalists from each state, visit http://bit.ly/1IKwfYD
More than one million National Guard and Reserve members, who play critical roles in combat and humanitarian missions across the globe, rely on strong employer relationships such as those forged by the 150 semifinalists for this year’s award.
"These employers are serving our military and our Nation proudly through their support of our citizen warriors,” said ESGR National Chair Paul E. Mock. "They are helping to keep America strong, and we are grateful for the important role they play in maintaining the wellbeing of our Guard and Reserve members and families.”
ESGR will announce the 2015 Freedom Award finalists after a review board comprised of military and civilian leaders selects 30 finalists, followed by the final award recipients that will be announced in early summer and honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 under the auspices of ESGR to recognize exceptional support from the employer community. In the years since, 205 employers have been honored with the award. To learn more about ESGR, visit www.esgr.mil.

“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees who, like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Richard E. Young, Colorado ESGR state chair. The following recipients of the prestigious Patriot Award are nominated by their Reserve Component employee in which the supervisor, manager, or owner has demonstrated outstanding support of their employee.
