We will celebrate the Feast of All Saints this Friday, November 1.* Do you know about our newest saint? On Sunday, October 13, Pope Francis canonized Cardinal John Henry Newman, the great English theologian, poet, Catholic priest and cardinal. He was originally an Anglican priest who converted to Catholicism in 1845. His writings are considered among some of the most important in the Church in recent centuries. Newman’s conversion to the Catholic faith was controversial in England, and resulted in the loss of many friends, including his own

sister, who never spoke to him again. Newman wrote something about his conversion that I think is meaningful for all of us, especially on this weekend for those who have come to be anointed in the Churches sacrament for the sick. Newman wrote: “God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another.” “Therefore I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him; in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about.” May we each be inspired by Saint John Henry Newman’s sense of mission. May we possess the openness of heart to hear God’s call and the courage and humility to be about that mission in this time and place that God has set us in. Saint John Henry Newman, and All Saints, PRAY FOR US!! With you a Christian. For you a priest. *The Feast of All Saints on Friday, November 1, is a Holy Day of Obligation. We will celebrate Mass at 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., and 7:00 p.m.

SpiritualLife&WorshipMay They Rest in Peace November, the Month of Remembrance November 1 we celebrate the Feast of All Saints, and November 2 the Feast of All Souls.

During November, we bring pictures of our beloved who have died and display them around the Mary and Joseph altars. Please bring pictures that you would like to display to either the Dore Parish Center during the week or to the sacristy when you come to Sunday Mass. Please write your

name and phone number on the back so that they can be returned at the end of the month. All Souls Day, November 2 Our parish will celebrate a Mass of Remembrance on Saturday, November 2, at 10:00 a.m. This is an occasion to honor those connected to the parish who have died since November of last year. All are invited to attend, especially those who have lost a loved one who was buried from St. Giles or who was prayed for at weekend Mass. We will read the list of names and light candles in their memory. If someone close to you died and was buried elsewhere and you would like their name listed in the remembrance, please call the Parish Center at 708-383-3430, or email [email protected]

STEWARDSHIP UPDATE Sunday Offertory donations for the first quarter of our fiscal year are detailed below. As you can see, we are still 7.1% below budget through September as we recover from lower summer Mass attendance.

Actual $259,495.60 92.9% Budget $279,318.00 100.0% Shortfall ($19,822.40) (7.1%)

Do you frequently forget your church envelopes or checkbook? Do you want to make sure that your donations are consistent week to week or month to month? Then consider using GiveCentral, St. Giles’ online giving option. Sign-up is easy; visit www.stgilesparish.org/give-central for detailed (but easy) instructions. It’s a great way to ensure your donation is received even if you cannot attend Mass allowing St. Giles consistent cash flow to pay bills and plan for the future. If you need assistance, contact Sharon in the Parish Office at 708-383-3430 Ext. 420 or [email protected]. Thank you for your continued generosity in supporting Saint Giles Parish!

Keeping Stewardship in Mind and Heart In last week’s readings, we were encouraged to remain persistent and constant in our prayer life. Today, we focus on the proper attitude of a steward at prayer. In the Gospel passage from Luke, Jesus illustrates the humble attitude we must have as we approach God in prayer through a parable of two praying men. One is a Pharisee, a man with respected status, theological training and all the right credentials. He marches right up to the front of the temple to speak a prayer “to himself,” thanking God for making him just a little bit superior to everyone else! The other man is a tax collector, known by those of his day to be a cheater and a sell-out to his fellow Jews. In contrast to the Pharisee, he stands near the back and cries out to God in a simple and honest way: “Be merciful to me a sinner.” Jesus tells us that it is the tax collector and not the Pharisee who leaves the temple justified. Why? The Pharisee was full of self as he approached God. He felt no real need for God as he rattled off his resume of good works and spiritual practices. He was simply going through the motions of prayer. His lack of humility prevented him from entering into a real dialogue with the Father. The tax collector, by contrast, emptied himself as he approached God. He recognized who he truly was (a sinner) and asked for mercy, leaving all the rest up to God. This is the kind of attitude God can work with! This is how a good steward prays — with trust, with complete openness to God’s will, with a listening mind and heart, ready to serve as God leads.

W e Pray For . . . Those who are hospitalized or homebound, including: Dr. Virginia Bishop, Marty Blake, Jan

Brent, Erva Bruno, Luciana Butera, Louis Cipparrone, Steve Cizmar, Tony Cocco, Anthony Costa, Ann Cyr, Daniel DeMarte, Andrea Dickson, Nancy Abram Donaldson, Mary Jane Gage, Vicky Gallermo, Jim Gibson, Mary Frances Hegarty, Deacon John Henricks, Paul Hoffman, Tim Kenny, Helen Kiefer, Jason Kuntz, Dorothy Lane, Natalie Lopez, Ann Mackin, Mary Mamolella, Giuliana Mason, Joan MacArthur, Patricia McDonald, Kathy Nardi, Anne O’Neill, Sister Louise Noesen, Amelia Patterson, Bob Quane, Joanne Quane, William Rios, Jr., Ann Ross, Fr. Ed Salmon, Dick Schutter, Charles Serpe, William Shilaga, Catherine Shilaga, Pat Sikorski, Sarah Stanley, Marianne Tagler, Stacy Blake Tiele, Nancy Wesclitz, Deacon Gerry Zych.

(Some names have been removed from our listing in the Arrow but are continuing to be prayed for through the Prayer Circle. Others have received a Prayer Shawl representing the prayers for healing by the Parish community.)

And for those of our family members and parishioners who have died, especially Madeline Cavenagh and Rosemarie Schliesske, mother of Judy Schliesske Waters.

Hope For The Day achieves proactive suicide prevention through outreach and mental health education. Suicide claims more than 44,000 lives a year in America. It is the second leading cause of death among 15-24 year-olds. The primary obstacle to suicide prevention is silence - silence due to stigmas. Suicide has no prejudice, and each year more than 800,000 world-wide die in this silence.

Suicide is a preventable mental health crisis. The biggest obstacle to effective prevention is the silence of stigma. We can reduce rates by raising the visibility of resources for support and providing mental health education to equip and empower a grassroots movement of peer-to-peer proactive prevention that is a

sustainable model for evolving social and institutional policies.

Prevention starts with a conversation, It's Ok Not To Be Ok. Get Educated & Volunteer Today! www.hftd.org/involved

MAKE TIME for THANKS & GIVING! In the words of Barb Schulz:

“Take a moment, search your heart, and consider being a part of this ministry. In return, you will find yourself blessed with a feeling of Joy, Love and Peace.”

For the last 27 years, the Schulz family has led the St. Giles Parish community in providing Thanksgiving Dinner to thousands of needy people in our community. The Schulz’s are retiring from this mission... we are deeply grateful to Barb and Dick for their selfless dedication. We also recognize and thank those volunteers who have stepped up every year! This year will be different. In an effort to keep this wonderful tradition alive, a “THANKS & GIVING” committee has been formed, which has developed a “hybrid” program for this year. Our intent is to deliver 100+ Thanksgiving dinners to people identified by the Schulz family as the “neediest.” Thanksgiving meals will be provided to the disabled, and seniors, included in past recipients lists, living in LOCAL housing facilities and private homes. This new plan gives us time to re-evaluate the program, and transition to a new broad-based community program for next year. Meals will be provided by independent groups, led by MEAL CAPTAINS. Their responsibilities include: • Preparing, on their own or with an assembled team, a Thanksgiving dinner to feed 10 people.

Meal recipients will be assigned by the committee. • Deciding on home cooking, or, purchasing pre-made designated menu items. • Packaging the meal to be transported to designated recipients. • Delivering meals anytime from Tuesday, November 26, to Thanksgiving morning. We are seeking individuals and families to join us in this effort. If you are interested in being a MEAL CAPTAIN, OR being part of a team (making or providing a turkey, potatoes, a vegetable dish, or a dessert), please email Elsa DePalma at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for helping us carry on a mission that acknowledges and honors the Schulz family legacy... MAKE time for THANKS... and GIVING.

School News

Thank you to our PTO for once again organizing our school-wide Great Apple Crunch. At 2:35 p.m., our 362 students and faculty simultaneously took a crunch of delicious apples donated from Royal Oak Orchard in Harvard. When students were finished, the apple cores were collected and composted.

7th Graders at Irons Oaks Irons Oaks was an amazing experience. My favorite activity was where we had to fit everyone in our group onto a small platform, then stay on the platform for how long it took us to sing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Once we did that, we had to make the platform smaller and do it again. Our activities definitely helped out everyone’s teamwork abilities. We had to communicate and talk to each other to find the best fit for everyone to get on. -Patrick Daly My favorite activity was when we had to use 12 blocks to get to the other side. Each of us had one block and we had to put the blocks on the “lake” to get to the other side. The block had to be occupied by someone else or it would be taken away. We eventually made it across. Another fun activity was rock climbing. There was an easy side and a hard side. I’m not adept enough at rock climbing to finish either side as I have an extreme fear of heights, but watching other people do it was very fun. Two of our students actually made it up the hard wall! - Will Meeker

St. Giles Ministry of Care

Take Christ to the world, celebrate our faith, manifest his love to all (Paul Inwood)

We at St. Giles have a dedicated group of people who faithfully visit and bring Communion to those who are homebound, who live in nursing homes, or are recovering from a recent surgery or illness. They bring the Light of God into the lives of those who seek the joy of receiving the Sacrament. These Ministers of Care also bring friendship and blessings. Anyone who has faced an illness knows how lonely it can be and how long the days can seem! We are currently expanding this Ministry to not only include our Communion visits, but also to make wellness check-in calls, send cards, and other ways of caring for our parishioners. We need you for this Ministry to thrive. In the words of Pope Francis: When we come together with tenderness, with those who have need of care, we carry the hope and the smile of God in contradiction to the world. And once you become involved, you’ll realize that those you care for give back so much more in love and gratitude. If you are interested in becoming a Minister of Care, please contact Annette Hulefeld at the Parish Center (708-383-3430, ext. 402) or leave a message with the parish receptionists. Thank you to all who are currently serving as Ministers of Care. We are so grateful to you! Love and Peace, Annette Hulefeld, D.Min/LCSW [email protected] 708-383-3430, ext. 402

WE NEVER STOP LEARNING Most of us are comfortable serving and caring for others. Makes us feel good and we are in control. In ministry, we are usually trying to do something for someone else. Same with parents and all of you who care for anyone else. But then that dynamic shifts and you’re on the receiving end. Dependent on someone else, a certain helplessness, not in charge… very humbling and forces a deep look into your being. As the months drag on you begin to wonder if anything will change. Will I get better? Will I be stuck with a walker? A cane not so bad. Will this nagging pain ever stop? Can I ever get back to helping even a little bit? You begin to get depressed and despondent. Until through prayer you realize how blessed you are. 85 years of pretty great health, problems but nothing critical. How can I be less than grateful? We all wear out. And pain makes one very irritable and short at times. To have friends caring for you who put up with that, tell you to swallow it, and forgive you and not just quit… that’s friendship and another gift. So, I am very slowly improving, I think. My leg and hip may be getting better. But obviously, from all I am learning, I myself am definitely better. Maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks! Keep praying for me though, and thanks for that.

SGFMC XXXVIII (That’s the 38th) Annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot It is another year and the traditional SGFMC Turkey Trot will be in just 6 weeks. We need help from past volunteers and there is room for the uninitiated. Last year’s volunteers will be contacted, but there is always room for more - please contact Jack Lesniak at 708-524-0880 or [email protected] (ref. TT2019 on the “Subject” Line).

TRADITION – For the last 38 or so Thanksgivings the St. Giles Family Mass Community has gathered to celebrate and be thankful for the gifts of our families and that some of us can still walk or run 3+ miles with our friends and family. The Turkey Trot is a three mile plus walk/run on Thanksgiving Day - November 28, 2019. We gather at 9:15 AM, in the downstairs entry hall of St. Giles Gym. The race starts from the side alley of the gym. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments are available for the participants at 10:00 a.m. Awards are at (about) 11:00 a.m. and we’re finished by 11:15 a.m. so you can get home and put the turkey in the oven. Awards: Medals to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place men & women finishers and ribbons to

the finishers in each age group. All are expected to proudly wear their awards at Thanksgiving dinner. Donations: Some years ago we ran this event to be a wash as far as money was concerned. But one year we had some money left over and decided to donate it to a good cause. This year we will be splitting the donation between Companions Journeying Together Inc. (www.cjtinc.org) and The St Giles Appalachian Service Project (ASP). Entry Fees: $20 if you want a long sleeve designer T-Shirt; $10 if you want our thanks for entering. (Note: Fees go to $25 and $15 respectively after Sunday Mass on November 24, 2019.) Numbers and t-shirt pick-up is on race day prior to the race. Entry Forms: Available on the parish website and at the Masses in the gym, or e-mail [email protected] for a copy. (There will be day-of entries at the St. Giles gym from 8:00 to 9:15 a.m. only – increased fees, $15 & $25, will apply.) More information is available on the TT entry form. Thanks! Jack Lesniak
