vLayered Coffee Filter FlowerSupplies needed per flower:

    3 white coffee filters

    watercolor paint

    water

    paint brush

template- optional- could draw your own (see template on last page)dull pencil

scissors vsee last page for suggestions on doing this project with children!

    floral tape

    1. Set aside one filter.

    2. Tint water with paint. Make the water

a little brighter than desired shade.

    3. Stack remaining two filters, fold in half, then again, and again.

    4. Using template, trace and cut petal shape.

    5. Submerge filters in colored water, then squeeze out excess water.

    *optional:

--- For gradation of color, dip edge of cut filters directly in paint pan:

    Lightly dip edge into

    water and squeeze to

    blend the color down.

    6. Gently unfold the wet filters, and lay flat to dry *.

*for faster drying, Ive used a hair dryer and a hot southern deck on a windless day.

Please remember to protect your drying surface from possible watercolor stains.

    7. Take remaining filter and fold in half, in half again, and once more.

    8. Place template lower on the filter to create a shorter petal layer (I could have added a second

template, but its easier for both of us to just use one and scoot it down, right?). Trace and cut.

    9. Do NOT submerge this filter.

Instead: a) dip lightly into tinted water,

    leaving the small, pointed end

    dry and uncolored.

    b) touch edges of petals to

    paint pan, and gently

    squeeze the paint to blend

    just a little (a white

    unpainted center gives nicecontrast)

    Lay flat to dry.

    Cutting and forming flowers

    10. Roll a piece of tissue, or

paper towel, or scrap coffee filter,

or crepe paper into a marble-sized

ball, then wrap ball with coloredtissue paper or crepe paper.

    11. Attach ball to wire with floral tape.

    .

    12. When petals are dry, place smaller petal layer on top of two larger layers

and poke wire through center of cut filters.

    13. Arrange petals as desired, then twist and secure bottom of filters to wire with floral tape.

    Petal template: Small children can:

    -tint filters

    -fold filters

    -trace template

    -cut petal shape

***they may need help attaching the center to the wire

-stack petals, insert center, and wrap floral tape (youngerchildren will probably need some help with this)

Hint: Remind the children to wrap the floral tape tightly- as

the tape is pulled, the stickier it becomes.

vIf working with a group of young children, one simpler option

is to pre-assemble the centers (steps 10 and 11),

then pre-tint the filters, and allow the children to :

    - Stack two filters together.- Fold in half, in half again, and once more (step 3)

-Trace the template and cut petal shapes (step 4)

-Fold remaining filter in half, in half again, and once more (step 7)

-Place template lower on the folded filter to make a smaller petal (step 8)

-Follow steps 12 and 13, helping as necessary to wrap with floral tape*

*An adult can begin securing petals to the wire with floral tape and allow the children

    to finish wrapping.
