Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

(TF-CBT) is an evidenced based treatment for

children ages 3-18 and their families. It is a

components-based model of psychotherapy that

addresses the unique needs of children with

PTSD symptoms, depression, behavior problems,

and other difficulties related to traumatic life

experiences including natural disasters,

accidents, physical and sexual abuse, exposure to

domestic violence, or serious illness. It can also

be applied to children who have experienced

multiple traumas or complicated bereavement.

TF-CBT includes several core treatment

components designed to be provided in a

flexible manner to address the unique needs of

each child and family.

This one day training is designed for practitioners

(CTSS, ARMHS, residential treatment staff,

transitional housing, etc) who work with children

and families who have experienced trauma or

who are participating in TF-CBT therapy. This

interactive and experiential training will include

lecture, demonstration, role plays, and small

group discussions.

The training will include an overview of

childhood trauma, trauma reactive behaviors,

and issues of complex

trauma. Participants will

learn practical skills

related to relaxation,

emotion regulation, and

cognitive coping to

support children who

are participating in

TF-CBT or who are

experiencing issues of

traumatic stress.

It is a components-based model of psychotherapy that addresses the unique needs of children with PTSD symptoms, depression, behavior problems, and other difficulties re-lated to traumatic life experiences including natural disasters, accidents, physical and sexual abuse, expo-sure to domestic violence, or serious illness. It can also be applied to children who have experienced multiple traumas or complicated bereavement. TF-CBT includes several core treatment components de-signed to be provided in a flexible manner to address the unique needs of each child and family.

This four day training is designed for child, adolescent, and family thera-pists who intend to implement TF-CBT with their clients. The interactive and experiential train-ing will include lecture, demonstra-tions, role plays, and small group dis-cussions.

The first 2 days of the four day training will include an overview of child trauma, trauma reactive behaviors, the neurobiology of trauma, and cur-rent trends in the treatment of child trauma. Participants will learn how to administer, score, and inter-pret trauma-specific standardized assessment instruments. Participants will learn the first five compo-nents of Trauma-focused CBT.

During the second two days, participants will share their implementation experiences with the assess-ment instruments and the first five components of TF-CBT. Participants will learn about exposure-based techniques used in the trauma narrative. Participants will learn the last three components of TF-CBT.

Participants must have completed the free web-based TF-CBT training available at tfcbt.musc.edu before attending the two-day training. CEU’s are available for completing that program. Reading the book, Treating Trauma and Traumatic Grief in Children and Adolescents (Cohen, J.A., Mannarino, A.P., & De-blinger, E., 2006) is strongly recommended.
