Introduction
Spectrum importance
Here we will see how Cognitive radio will help in catching this future , Let’s start the journey 4
Introduction
• What is SDR…?
SDR is software defined radio, where single radio might be configured to work on different bands, frequencies or in different technologies and this configuration might be changed as per need.
• in SDR the software able to change
• Security
• Modulation
• Processing
• frequency
• Wave form
5
SDR Concept
• SDR advantages
• Simple network architecture
• Easy configuration
• Less complexity
• Easy upgrade
• SDR disadvantages
• Still there is no automation and change need user intervention
• Always needs multi band antenna
6
SDR Concept
• Definition
We can say cognitive radio is the radio that aware of its surroundings and adapts intelligently adapts to new waveform.
The motivator behind this is existence of under utilized spectrums as well congested ones and this is extremely impacting networks performance

Cognitive radio versus smart antennas
Point Cognitive radio (CR) Intelligent antenna (IA)
Principal goal Open spectrum sharing Ambient spatial reuse
Interference processing Avoidance by spectrum sensing Cancellation by spatial pre/post-coding
Key cost Spectrum sensing and multi-band RF
Multiple- or cooperative-antenna arrays
Challenging algorithm Spectrum management tech Intelligent spatial beamforming/coding tech
A smart antenna is an antenna technology that uses spatial beam-formation and spatial coding to cancel interference; however, it requires an intelligent multiple- or cooperative-antenna array. On the other hand, cognitive radio allows user terminals to sense whether a portion of the spectrum is being used to share spectrum with neighbour users.
• Improving spectrum utilization & efficiency
• Improving link reliability
• Less expensive radios
• Advanced network topologies
