Innovation Forum 12th February 2013Our Introduction

Any organization that is more than 10 years old may have a structure that is incompatible with the realities of todays information-based markets. Its hardly news that social platforms, smartphones and tablets, analytics and cloud computing have forever altered the way we live and have infiltrated the workplace. What is the best way to keep pace with these rapid shifts in the market? On the 12th February, Cognizant hosted its Innovation Day, an intensive one-day event covering emerging markets and developments in four key areas: social, mobile, analytics and cloud.

Our panel of industry experts included leading researchers from Oxford, innovation experts from a number of successful start-ups and thought leaders selected by London venture capitalists. Social, mobile, analytics and cloud technologies have been driving the market for the last few years and we cannot afford to fall behind the curve, behind our competitors. Join us as we conclude discussions between our industry panel and audience members.

Social Media AnalyticsIntroduction by Kevin Benedict

Kevin Benedict opened the discussion on social media analytics. Kevin is the Head Analyst for SMAC (Social Media Analytics Cloud) at Cognizant. Our panel included Sean Heshmat, Head of Cognizant Analytics EMEA; Professor Stephen Pulman from University of Oxford; Jan Rezab, CEO of Socialbakers and Karo Moilanen, CEO of TheySay Analytics.

The panel discussion started by defining what social media analytics is and who within the business takes ownership of it. In most cases social media is managed by the marketing team, but speakers admitted that they started receiving requests to review social media channels from the management boards or legal departments. The controversial question to ask was why should we care. Social media analytics not only measures the effectiveness

of marketing campaigns, but also brand perception, customer satisfaction and loyalty, as well as the sentiment of the market.

The audience had many good questions about the accuracy of social sentiment analysis, where the data comes from and how it is processed. There were in-depth discussions on how computers can understand human language given its complexity, for instance how does a computer understand humour or sarcasm and how social analytics companies prevent purposeful gaming of the system. A number of tools that monitor and control social media were discussed and compared. Panelists agreed that while the process requires human intervention and interpretation, significant improvements are being made every day.

The bottom line is that much of it still requires human adjustments

and interpretations, but much progress is happening.

    Ved Sed introduced

    our next discussion on

mobile wallet and payments. Ved is Head of Cognizant Mobility for UK and Europe. Our panel included Jay Chinnadorai, Wallet Services Director at Weve; Myles Dawson, UK Country Manager of Adyen; Emmanuel Schalit, CEO of Dashlane; Professor Bill Roscoe, Head of Oxford Universitys Department of Computer Science and Kevin Benedict, Head Analyst at Cognizant.

Mobile wallets have recently been a subject of much industry interest, but is it a solution in search of a problem? There is for a start little consensus within the industry on the definition of mobile wallet and guidelines for all retailers. Also consumers dont seem to be clamoring for a mobile wallet or are less willing or able to adapt to technologies available. This is not to say that there is no value in a mobile wallet. In 2007, there were no consumers asking for a smartphone either. So what is driving interest in the mobile wallet? The first is loyalty points and couponing. For

most consumers it is inconvenient to physically carry and keep track of multiple loyalty cards and coupons. Having virtualized cards on their smartphones would enable a much more efficient system of using loyalty points. It would also provide a much more effective way of offering and redeeming coupons and offers, rather than cutting and carrying paper coupons from magazines. The ability to gather, analyze and ultimately influence spending behaviour is the second, and arguably, critical function of the wallet. People may not be thinking, I want a mobile wallet but there is little doubt that they want to save money and buy things efficiently. As such, money management and making payments - over the air or using local networks such as NFC is one functionality, and wallets may exist without involving money and transaction enablement. Whatever the starting point, giving consumers what they want and what makes their life easier should be everyones primary focus. Technology and providers desires need to come second.

    Mobile Wallet and Payments

    Introduction by Ved Sed

We started with a consumer point of view. I think the two

models can coexist by the way, every retailer can have a mobile

app. Its a question of how we can get there.

Big Data Analytics Introduction by Sean Heshmat

Sean Heshmat introduced our next discussion. Sean is Head of Cognizant Analytics EMEA. Our panel included Professor Eric Meyer and Linnet Taylor from the Oxford Internet Institute; Zdenek Svoboda, Vice President of Platform at GoodData; Tim Moreton, CTO and Founder at Acunu; Paul Gariboldi, EMEA Sales Director at Pentaho and Vishal Malik at Cognizant High Performance Computing.

The discussion on big data analytics centered around the four key themes of governance, transparency, technology and the user. The panel addressed issues in the governance and transparency of data and the huge implications of current data generation.

Our academics discussed efforts to create organizational governance models based around ownership of data. The panelisits were in agreement about the need for a more reliable system which would provide structure to current data analysis with emphasis on the source. In addition the discussion addressed issues of data privacy, user agreements and ethical and legal boundaries to data capture. They used Creative Commons as an example of a clear system that could be applied to govern user data. Within the business community shared data has great value to consumer insight and helping predict or target future customers. From a business

standpoint, businesses must also monitor and extract meaning and intelligence from the data. This is one of the challenges faced by analysts; another is the differences between numerical data and having technologies available to handle large volume of data in real time. Our start-ups here provided insights into current technologies and how these are catching up to demand. They also provided some real-world examples of specific client projects and outcomes.

In conclusion, the panel agreed that the real barrier to the speed of current data analytics is the ability to implement this data with clear understanding. Businesses need people that understand decades of innovation. Currently the market has a scarcity of data scientists with this knowledge and understanding. It was further agreed that companies who have employees that can combine both the technical and domain knowledge will certainly be leaders in this space.

I think sadly we are in a situation where a lot of technology has been

democratized, so we all have lots of power and tools we can use

without any understanding of the risks associated. Im wondering

how much of this solution is about education and a need to educate

people to make them aware of the risks.

    Balaji Sethuraman

introduced the discussion on cloud security and compliance. Balaji is Chief Architect at the Cloud Computing Centre of Excellence in the Global Technology Office at Cognizant. Our panel for this discussion included: James Matthews, Director of Enterprise Technology at Huddle; Paul Simmons, independent cloud specialist; Ian Moyse, Sales Director at Workbooks and Jim Darragh, CEO at Abiquo.

Business and enterprise cloudadoption started with cost reduction as a driver in most cases, where as now it is driven by speed-to-market and business process transformation. Most studies highlight security and compliance as two key inhibitors which restrict current cloud-driven enterprisetransformation. Our innovation event discusses the challenges and securityrisks of cloud technology.

The panel started with a discussionaround data security, its limitationsand the best practices for securingdata. Is data in the cloud better? Cloud offers processing through the cloud and can occur in transit and at rest. Further into the discussion enterprise data classification framework and in transit encryption were suggested as the best mechanisms to govern and secure data in the cloud. Following that, the panel then discussed enterprise and cloud identity managment and the impacts of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). Suggestions were provided on entitlement-based identity management. The discussion concluded withquestions that business should askSaaS (Software-as-a-Service)providers, and what steps IT shouldfollow to proactively plan for optimal SaaS implementation.

Social-Mobile-Analytics-Cloud: Creating Economic Value or Hype?

Over the past few years, weve heard a lot about social, mobile, analytics and cloud, and their potential for the enterprise. These days, however, were witnessing more and more corporate non-successes with these new technologies. In some cases, BYOD (bring your own device) policies for employees and their personal, smart devices have added significant support costs, interoperability problems and new security breaches. Other instances have shown that internal social networks result in productivity declines as employees waste time with virtual chatting. And many cloud applications have effectively neutralized cost savings through efforts required to integrate corporate data and customize functionality. What companies are learning the hard way, is that its not enough to simply bolt on these new tools to existing business models. Only when social, mobile, analytics and cloud technologies are implemented as a stack, and applied to key processes, will meaningful results then follow.

    Cognizant Mobility

Cognizant Mobility understands that enterprise mobility isnt just another IT project. Nor is it about a single app or mobile Web site. In our experience, the most successful enterprise mobility strategies are built on a strong collaboration between business and IT. We call our approach freedom within a framework

and it allows the business the freedom to innovate while providing IT the control to do it securely.Leveraging this flexible IT framework that adapts to changing technologies, we draw upon our industry knowledge and partnerships to provide guidance in making the most strategic vendor, device and platform choices.
