Preface
Having a job shadowing experience with my eTwinning partner was a stimulating and excellent
experience that I will cherish forever. Before leaving we set up several meetings to explain the
Erasmus KA1 project. At first I was supposed to attend a course in London on digital tools but it got
cancelled. I went to an Erasmus+ conference in Milan where they talked about job shadowing and
then I discussed the possibility of doing one with my Greek partner. It was the best choice because I
learnt a lot of different digital tools and I got the opportunity to see my eTwinning partner and
discover her culture and country.

GIORNO 1 Data 26/03/2018 I arrived at the airport of Thessaloniki on time and the Erasmus Coordinator/tutor of 3rd Veroia
Junior High School/ 4th Veria Lyceum was there to meet me - her name is Despoina Pavilou. She is a
very skilled English/History teacher and she is also an expert in Digital Technology Education. We
have been eTwinning partners since 2012 and she has visited Italy three times but this was my first
time in Veria, Greece.
We took a bus from Thessaloniki to Veria and had a discussion about the Greek school system and
how digital tools help inclusion and enhance collaboration and learning. In addition, we discussed a
possible future eTwinning project and also the extreme importance of digital competences in every
sector in particular education, culture and tourism needed for a prosperous 21st century European
citizenship. That night we had a very late dinner with an excellent greek salad, feta cheese, souvlaki
and fried courgettes with Tzaziki. The hotel the school booked was Hotel Elia in the city center near
the school.

Despoina picked me up at 7:45 and we walked to school. We met the principal and other staff
members. Debbie has her own lab room. That day I met the pupils of the 3rd Veroia Junior High
School. The first 2 classes worked on a treasure-hunt game, a quest using mobile devices,
QRgenerator from ClassTools.Net and Socrative student as sites. I also participated in this quest
and it was really amazing to see that the group with the autistic student won. The students
collaborated and enjoyed what they were learning. The task included a series of quests that needed
the collaboration of the students in order to be completed - it was very competitive. They provided
feedback on the tools they had been using through the LMS (Open eClass) sending short texts and
chatting on-line with both supervisors in order to practice narration and mediation skills. Two classes
worked on digital narrative techniques and story-building workshop using multimedia and mobile
devices. They demonstrated what they have learnt and worked on planning their Powtoon – 7
steps on How to become famous. One class worked with Plickers answering questions regarding the
Shakespeare play Much Ado About Nothing and the last group worked on Augmented Reality from
their History books. It was really interesting to see how a student can expand a topic from a trigger
image by creating an overlap and what fascinated me the most was the fact that for people with
dyslexia or other learning disabilities this was an excellent way of learning. The kids were
8
collaborating and really learning. I always believed that digital tools are a great way of learning and I
really got confirmation here.
Plickers is an awesome assessment tool that can be used to quickly assess the knowledge of your
students through multiple choice questions. Despoina showed me how to use Plickers in the
classroom and she showed me a demonstration of how she uses Plickers to answer questions in her
literature class.
The students worked in a lab with a white-interactive board, Wi-Fi hub and tablets. They used
simple software at first like Windows Movie Maker, on-line sites like Animoto, Powtoon,
Videoscribe and finally commercial ones like Sony Vegas pro that was purchased by the school
board for this purpose.
We finished school at 14:30 and then had a nice Greek lunch in a typical restaurant. I had fried squid,
Greek salad, grilled vegetables, and dessert. After we went for a nice walk to admire the city center
and its shops. We also had a very good coffee in a nice coffee shop.
We had a late dinner with souvlaki and salad and called it a day.

GIORNO 3
Data 28/03/2018
This was an amazing day dedicated to the importance of digital tools such as QR codes in the tourism
industry.
The students of “Museum and Archaeological sites Keepers” in the State Institute of Vocational
Training in Veria used QR code Generators to add content about the site that can be accessed by
mobile phones that do not require Internet accessibility. They took us on a tour and were our guides
in the older part of the town. This town is really worth visiting because of the traditional architecture
and landscape. It took the City Council about two decades to restore the two parts of the town that
best show its history from the 15th to the 19th century. They include the old fortifications, late-
Byzantine churches and houses. Some are well preserved and can be visited but others can only be
seen from the paved and cobbled streets. Spring is perhaps the best time to visit Veria and I took a
lot of photographs. The tour included a fair part of old churches. The students of “Museum and
Archaeological sites Keepers” in the State Institute of Vocational Training had arranged the routes.

GIORNO 4
Data 29/03/2018
I assisted the second part of the workshop in the 3rd Veroia High School regarding Augmented and
Virtual reality in History and Foreign Language lessons. The students had been trained to produce
their own material related to narration, like videos and sound recordings and they incorporated this
material in “trigger” images in their text books so that they can be accessed by mobile devices. They
used HP reveal (former Aurasma) and Blippar to incorporate the material. They also quickly
explained ZapparWorks, iScience, Elements4D, Quiver that use augmented reality. I really enjoyed
her History lesson on Greek Mythology. She has all her digital tools and material in her e-class. Later
that morning there was a conference in their auditorium on Immigration. The students had prepared
wonderful drawings and slogans on this topic – Mare Nostrum. The Principal and the Art teacher
gave a very touching speech on this issue and explained how the Greeks immigrated to the USA and
all their hardships through a short video. They also asked me about my family’s story as I am the
daughter of two Italian parents who immigrated to Canada in search for a better life. This experience
was touching, enriching and very emotional.
After a very intense morning we had a great Greek lunch with lamb, etc.. After lunch we had a nice
walk in the city center and then went to Despoina’s house to revise all the things we did together
and she explained into detail Quiver, HP Reveal, QR treasure hunt etc…

GIORNO 5 Data 30/03/2018
The last day I job shadowed her in the 4th Lyceum of Veria “Shakespeare in Literature”, “The
dynamics of Literary narrative in Politics”, “Ethics and Politics” are the main issues she dealt with in
her 3 classes of senior students. She used digital tools to present each issue and to debate over it.
We finished watching Coriolanus and then they opened a debate and discussion. She used projector,
PCs, mobile devices and work in labs. They also used video presentations, audio recordings to create
a collaborative thesis on each topic. also using Google drive to enhance collaboration and Plickers.
At 16:30-19:30 We were supposed to attend a three-hour workshop at the University of
Macedonia, in Thessaloniki. It was aimed at teachers of all levels and types of education focusing on
the use of advanced robotics in education. It is part of a post-graduate course and we were
supposed to collaborate with 16 other teachers on the possibilities that robotics present in a
classroom and possible ways of using them with our students in a wide range of lessons and
activities. Unfortunately, a pipe exploded and flooded the area, so all lessons were cancelled.
Therefore, we had a discussion about this topic in a coffee shop. It is very interesting topic that I
would like to develop even if I do not have much experience.
My flight was at 22;40 so we had a very quick walk in the city center and then she drove me to the
airport - I was sad to leave. This was a very great professional experience. I really learnt a lot about
different digital tools and how they can make learning easier more motivating and collaborative. I
am now showing my students and colleagues everything I learnt and I feel very enriched and
empowered and I am really glad that eTwinning and Erasmus + gave me this wonderful opportunity.
I really hope I could go back to Veria in the future and that this job shadowing will permit us to open
another eTwinning project.

FOLLOW_UP
This experience has had an important impact on my teaching methods, classroom dynamics and
inclusion. I have brought back a lot of digital knowledge which I have shared with my colleagues
and students. In addition, I also presented this project at a Regional eTwinning seminar held at our
school in May 2018; promoting the cultural heritage of my territory.
I sincerely think that this project was extremely positive and I would recommend it to any teacher
who believes in lifelong learning and enhancing digital educational skills The only negative
feedback I have is that it was too short.
In conclusion, l would like to thank my colleague Elisa Alberghi, Erasmus+ and eTwinning for giving
me this wonderful experience.
I have opened an eTwinning project where we can use some digital tool to share, collaborate and
narrate the stories that belong to the digital culture heritage and creativity of our students.
