Cognos Workspace: Multi Tab and Global Area

Allows content to be organized on multiple tabs in a single workspace

A tabbed workspace contains a global area common to all tabs.

Global area will contain filter, action buttons, report prompts.

© 2012 IBM Corporation IBM Confidential - July 2012 8

Action Buttons

Action buttons identical to those found in IBM Cognos Insight are now part of the Cognos

Workspace application

Use Action buttons to navigate between tabs on a workspace

© 2012 IBM Corporation IBM Confidential - July 2012 9

Cognos Workspace Tabs: How to?

Very intuitive interface! – To add delete or rename a tab, go to the action menu, or right click on the workspace area. – To add a Filter:

• Drag filter object from Toolbox to global area • Filtering on a column will impact all reporting widgets that include that column

– Action buttons: Drag from the toolbox to the workspace, then select the Actions from the menu

Cognos Workspace: Freeze/Unfreeze; Expand/collapse

Ability in lists and crosstabs to freeze row and column headers to keep them in view while

scrolling

In a crosstab, column and row headings can be expanded to show details. i.e Expand region

heading to show related countries

Cognos Workspace: Visual recommender

„Change display type‟ will now list most recommended display type based on the graph‟s

data. Selecting the More… option explains the choice reasoning

Cognos Workspace: Chart Interaction

User can interact with charts or chart parts:

– Filter chart content

– Sort chart content

– Drill up/down

© 2012 IBM Corporation IBM Confidential - July 2012 13

Graduated Capabilities

Access to functions and features in Cognos Workspace can now be controlled by the IBM

Cognos administrator.

This functionality is controlled by the following capabilities:

Cognos Workspace Advanced, formerly called Business Insight Advanced

Option to automatically create crosstab

header

Option to automatically group and

summarize lists

Table style passed off when drilling up or

down from an initial crosstab

Creates custom filter to bring in values from

Excel or other sources (Paste these values

into prompt box)

From Cognos Workspace Advanced data

can be copied into external application (i.e.

Excel or WordPad)

Cognos 10.2

Crosstab headers and grouping were generated automatically and were not optional

Copy to Excel would copy the xml report spec, not the data.

iOS Push Notifications

What is it? Ability to receive a notification when a new report or a new version of a report is push to iPad

Push can be enabled per server, allowing users to opt out if preferred

Leverages normal iOS banner mechanisms such as positions and behaviors

The scheduler notifies Apple to push a notification to the user

Tapping the notifications opens the App to the selected report

iOS Push Notifications: How to?

First, in Cognos Configuration Dispatcher and Services, ensure that ApplePushNotification.Level setting

for the Dispatcher‟s MobileService is set to „Name‟ (default) or „Generic‟.

– Name: displays the name of the report in the notification message

Multi-lingual bursting

A user will receive a bursted report in their preferred language. This is NOT new

When the preferred language is not available, the user will receive the report in the language

set as the server default. This IS new.

pref language. Default

is set to English

Bursted Multi-key report (Cont…)

What is it? A user can receive multiple bursted copies of the same report:

For example: Overall manager could receive the reports of each of his regions‟ managers

The reports are differentiated by burst key. This IS new.

Previous versions did not include burst key in the report name, which means that all the

bursted versions had the same name and would therefore overwrite each other.

External Samples Server

Samples are on their own server

Reduces the size and installation time

of the App

Provides a dynamic view of the

samples library

Downloads and caches the sample on

the device

Samples reports were embedded in

the Mobile App

Download time of the App was huge

External Samples Server: How to?

Go to the iPad settings

Scroll to list of installed Apps and select IBM Cognos

Ensure the setting „Display Sample Server‟ is ON

Launch IBM Cognos app

Select „Get More Samples‟

Select a report

That report will be downloaded and cached on the mobile device.

The cached version will be re-used unless a newer version appears on the server.

And finally: Timestamp on Active Reports MHT files

Report Service will add a timestamp to the MHT files. This will allow the import to iPad to

determine which file is newer and prompt the user if they are importing an older Active

Report:

– When importing through iTunes or an email, the new rule will be:

• conflict resolution will be done using the file name, not the ID of the MHT

– When importing a newer AR: silently overwrite without warning

– if importing older AR: warn user and give the option to keep of overwrite existing.

Existing Prompt Techniques

– Hack into BI source code

• Are not documented or supported

– We do our best to maintain compatibility and will continue to do so for some

time

• We may break them despite our best efforts

– You do NOT need to replace these techniques in this release

• Current Prompt API likely not sufficient

• You will have to replace them at some undefined point in the future

Dynamic Query Mode - DQM

Solution Highlights

Enhanced Query Service with Dynamic Query:

• 64-bit in-memory optimized query generation with pattern intelligence to improve performance against complex heterogeneous data

• In-memory calculations and aggregate operations for faster compute time

• New optimized caching for hierarchies, members, facts, calculations and prompts for improved report performance

• Initial conformance is for OLAP sources: SAP BW, TM1 and Essbase.

• C10.1.1 Relational Data, DMR

Dynamic Cubes

• In-Memory OLAP cubes that load directly from a star or snowflake schema Data

Warehouse

• The goal is to improve performance on large data warehouses

• Is a part of Dynamic Query Mode

– No license or separate install

• Each cube is a dimensional view of Star or Snowflaked schema, based on One Fact

table

• Dynamic Cubes uses the database and data cache for scalability, and also uses a

combination of caching, optimized aggregates (in-memory and in-database), and

optimized SQL to achieve performance.

• Once a Dynamic Cube is created and published it can be access like any other OLAP

cube

Dynamics Cubes

• Cache shared across

all users

• Security is applied on

top of the cache

Fully Aggregate Aware

• To guarantee query routing

• Advise on aggregates

– In-Memory

– Database

• Create In-Memory aggregates on the fly

– No DBA required

Dynamic Cube Designer

• Not Framework Manager

• Not Performance Modeler

• Only with Star or Snowflake Schema‟s

• Cube consists of dimensions and a fact table

• A single cube can be used to create multiple cubes

• Dimensions can be shared

• Merge 2 base cubes to create a virtual cube

• Virtual cubes can be combined as well
