HOW TO BUY AT MOSSGREEN AUCTIONSWe have compiled the following guide to assist you with the exciting process that is bidding at auction.

4

Mossgreen’s printed catalogues are available approximately four weeks prior to an auction sale date. Online catalogues are posted at www.mossgreen.com.au approximately three weeks prior to the auction date. Catalogues can be subscribed to yearly, or you can collect a complimentary copy at the viewing. Complimentary catalogues are also sent free of charge to regular buyers.

Typically, the viewing period is the three or four days immediately before the auction date, from 10.00am to 5.00pm at our premises in Armadale. Additional viewing venues, dates and times may be specified in the catalogue and on the Mossgreen website.

ESTIMATESAn estimate of value is provided for each lot, taking into account rarity, condition, quality and provenance, plus the perceived state of the market. Estimates are generally pitched at “realistically conservative” levels. In almost all cases, the reserve is 75% of the estimate.

TALK TO OUR SPECIALISTSOur people are always happy to discuss any lot with you in greater detail. Their names and contact details are published in each appropriate catalogue and on our website.

CONDITION REPORTSCondition reports are available upon request. These supplement the catalogue description of the lot and provide guidance on quality and appearance. They are advisable to obtain if you have a query about a lot that you are unable to view in person. Please send your email request to [email protected]

Mossgreen Auctions offers all clients four options to bid at our auctions:

1. PERSONAL ATTENDANCE AT THE AUCTIONExperience the excitement, theatre and fun of bidding at a live auction.

Make sure you arrive with enough time to register for a bidding number. If you haven’t purchased from Mossgreen before you will need to bring along photo identification such as your driver’s licence or passport.

2. POSTAL OR ABSENTEE BIDDINGThis is the ideal solution when you can’t attend in person, or prefer not to bid by phone or live over the internet.

Simply use the Postal Bid Form at the back of this catalogue. For each lot in which you are interested, enter the lot number and the maximum amount you wish to bid for the lot. Your bids will be “placed on the book” and actioned for you by the auctioneer. If you are the highest bidder, the lot will be knocked down to you at reserve (if there are no other bids), or at one bidding step above the second-highest bid. In the event of equal bids being received, the earlier bidder will be successful. Post, fax a copy or scan and email the bidsheet to us.

Especially if you are placing your bids close to the date of the auction, you can tip the balance in your favour by ticking the “Break Ties” box or the “Increase by” box (making sure you insert the appropriate percentage increment).

If the total of your proposed bids exceeds your budget, simply enter the total you are prepared to spend against “My overall purchase limit is $xxx”. We will stop actioning your bids when your limit is reached. Nobody wants to be unsuccessful in an auction. By using a limit you may be able to buy lots you otherwise may not have bid for.

NB: If you post your bids from interstate or overseas, it’s wise to confirm that we have received them. Many clients have been let down by expecting the post office to deliver mail in a reasonable time. A simple phone call or email can avoid disappointment.

3. TELEPHONE BIDDINGThis can be the perfect solution for when you can’t attend an auction. A member of the Mossgreen staff will assist you personally in the auction room, relaying each bid and what is

happening in the room itself and will bid on your behalf in line with your instructions.

Because there can be problems with phone bidding - you are not home when we call; your phone is switched off or the battery dies; there is a service interruption; the line is poor; etc - we strongly recommend that you provide us with covering bids for the lots in which you are interested. This does not need to be your top figures. The reason for doing it is to provide you with insurance against any of the mentioned problems occurring, and they do all occur!

We have prepared a pamphlet “Assistance with Phone Bidding” that you may find helpful. To obtain your copy, simply phone or email Romani Benjamin.

4. LIVE ONLINE BIDDINGMossgreen Live is an online bidding service created exclusively for Mossgreen clients who wish to bid “live” from the comfort of home or office. You can register for online bidding at www.mossgreen.com.au Please note there is no additional commission added for lots purchased via Mossgreen Live.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Regardless of the bidding method you prefer, we request if you have not purchased from Mossgreen before that you provide us with appropriate photo ID by way of your driver’s licence or passport. In this era of identity theft and internet fraud, this is a necessary protection for both the auction house and you, our valued client.

INTERNATIONAL BIDDINGIf you are an overseas bidder who has not purchased from Mossgreen before, it is important that you make arrangements to bid at least a week before the auction. In addition to providing photo ID (your identity card, driver’s licence or passport), our accounts staff may request that you put $A500 in our bank account as a security deposit, and the funds must be “cleared” before the auction.

If you are successful in the auction, this deposit will be deducted from your invoice total. If you are unsuccessful, the deposit will be refunded within 48 hours or, if you prefer, held on your account for use in a future auction.

1. A warm welcome to Mossgreen’s first stand-alone coin and banknote auction, prepared by Nick Anning. We really appreciate the support we have been given by our many vendors.

2. In keeping with our longer-term vision to create a separate Coin Department, we have engaged the services of industry icon Chris Meallin as Consultant, and have recently applied for membership of the Australian Numismatic Dealers’ Association, with Nick as Mossgreen’s nominee. We will also be advertising regularly in “Coin & Banknote Review” and will be attending key shows in Melbourne and around the country. We look forward to providing you with an alternative venue for both buying and selling.

3. If this is the first time you have received a catalogue from Mossgreen Auctions, you would probably like to know a bit about our business. What we call the “new” Mossgreen was created in 2012 from a merger of the South Yarra art auction firm Mossgreen Pty Ltd with the broad-based collectibles auction house Leski Auctions Pty Ltd of Hawthorn. The opportunity to move both businesses into our fully-renovated and refurbished premises in Armadale - previously the home of Sotheby’s in Australia - provided key impetus for the project. At the end of 2014, Australia’s leading philatelic auction house, Prestige Philately, joined forces with Mossgreen. Further expansion by acquisition and cooperation has quickly taken Mossgreen to the position of Australia’s largest multi-department auction house, with sales last year of almost $A40,000,000.

Mossgreen is committed to being a full-service auction house for Australian and international collectors and dealers, with expertise across all collecting fields. Our extensive roster of in-house and external specialists include many of the foremost names in their respective fields. A list of these accomplished men and women, and their fields of expertise, is on the inside-back cover of this catalogue. All of us at Mossgreen stand ready to be of assistance to you.

4. The layout of this catalogue is a bit different from the style of many other coin firms. Briefly, we start with miscellaneous lots. Australian coins are followed by a special Internment Camps section, then by Australian banknotes. Finally, we have separate sections of coins and banknotes from other countries. Based on feedback sought from collectors and dealers alike, we expect this format will be well-received, and we intend future catalogues to follow the same pattern.

If you haven’t done it before, please take the time to read through our Terms & Conditions, on page XX. Romani and Nick will answer any questions you might have.

5. Although this is a relatively small sale, we expect you will be as pleased as we are with the variety of material being offered, and with the inclusion of a number of very rare and desirable items.

In particular, we are delighted to offer a complete run of denominations and signatures of Hay Internment Camp Seven banknotes, which we are assured is the first time such a comprehensive group has been presented at public auction. Coincidentally, from an overseas source, we are offering a previously unrecorded and possibly unique Tatura 3d Canteen Token found in some personal effects in Israel.

You will also find a good range of pre-decimal and decimal Australian banknotes, notable for the many Star Notes, with very attractive estimates.

Highlights of the foreign coins are a rare Danzig 1930 25 gulden gold piece Unc, a Great Britain 1853 QV Proof 6d of which only some 40 were minted, and a complete collection of 1892-98 South African Republic (Transvaal) coins to 5/-, including different grades to suit all budgets.

Our modest offering of World banknotes includes Die Proofs for the issued 1955 Bank of Israel 10 Lirot and 50 Lirot notes that also show the positions of the printers’ “Secret Marks”.

6. The catalogue is extensively illustrated but there are many more images on our website: please visit www.mossgreen.com.au In addition, more images can be requested by sending an email to our Department Administrator, Romani Benjamin at [email protected] All reasonable requests will be handled free of charge.

7. In addition to the viewing dates at our Melbourne premises, Nick Anning and Chris Meallin will be attending the Perth Money Fair at the Domain Stadium, Subiaco Road, Perth on Saturday the 27th and Sunday the 28th February 2016. Please come along and say “Hi!” Chris and Nick will be happy to talk with you about your collecting goals. They will also be pleased to accept appropriate consignments of Coins, Banknotes or Stamps for auction with Mossgreen during 2016.

CATALOGUE INTRODUCTION MARCH 2016

8

8. Obviously, personal viewing and attendance at the auction maximise your opportunity to buy material that best suits your needs. However, if you are unable to attend the sale, you can place absentee bids from our website, or be an on-line bidder during the auction. You can even be on-line just to listen to the auction. Or you can bid by phone. If you have any queries about the bidding processes, including how to register to bid, please send an email to [email protected]

9. This will be another BIG year at Mossgreen. The Stamp & Coin Department has several important philatelic consignments already to hand, and we are now accepting for another Coins & Banknotes auction to be conducted in the second half of the calendar-year.

During April, we will be joining with other Mossgreen departments to present John Lancaster’s fabled Australian Trade Exhibitions collection of postal history, photographs, books, commemorative medallions and more. This is an extraordinary collection that also covers the involvement of Australians at trade exhibitions around the world. This collection really is one out of the box.

If you wish to receive our stamp catalogues, or the John Lancaster catalogue, Romani will be happy to add your name to the mailing list.

10. Most of the lots in this sale are from private collectors and estates here in Australia so no GST will be added to the hammer prices. The relatively few items consigned from other countries are identified by a small dagger symbol “ “ following the estimate figures. Because they are imports, they do attract GST for Australian buyers. However, overseas buyers should note that no Australian GST is payable if those “taxed” lots are re-exported.

Finally, I wish you success with your bidding.

Gary Watson and your Team at Mossgreen: Romani Benjamin, Nick Anning, Yang Liu and Chris Meallin (Consultant)

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Ever rising costs, especially courtesy of Australia Post, have left us no option but to raise our commission rate. From 1st January 2016, the buyer’s premium for all Mossgreen auctions will be 24% (plus government-mandated GST for Australian buyers).

We readily acknowledge that this is a sharp increase over the 19% previously charged for our stamp and coin auctions. However, before Prestige came on board, Mossgreen was charging 22%, meaning continuing Mossgreen clients have enjoyed a bit of a rate ‘holiday”. And the new rate does bring us into line with our peers, the major auction houses in Great Britain and Europe. Especially if you bid with Spink, Baldwins and others at their level, then this should not be a major concern to you.

It is vital to note that this does not mean you will necessarily pay more for your purchases. When sophisticated auction buyers prepare their bids, they routinely take into account the add-ons they will incur.

Thus, if you are prepared to pay $1000 for a particular item, you can effectively limit the cost to that amount by bidding $800. When the 25% (in broad terms) costs is added, you will pay $1000.

Whether or not you pay more than your intended limit of $1000 will then depend on the intentions of other bidders and your willingness to continue competing with them.

Don’t forget that we don’t charge a fee for our catalogues, for additional scans, or for you to use our live on-line bidding: many other firms charge for all of these services. We also, unlike some firms, offer free phone bidding if you prefer that facility. Also, we don’t charge an additional fee per lot, as is done elsewhere.

The bottom line is that we value your business, and we would like you to keep coming back. We endeavour to bring you the best material, with the most attractive presentation, properly graded for your benefit, and we charge you no more than need be to keep the wheels of industry turning.

9

UNDERSTANDING OUR SYMBOLS AND ABBREVIATIONSAt Mossgreen Auctions we utilise many of the same symbols and terminology as other firms, but with some additional categories that you should be aware of. We are confident that once you are comfortable with our gradings, you will always be satisfied with the quality of the material you purchase from us. And in the event that we have made a mistake - for example missed a tear and consequently over-graded a banknote - we WANT you to return it to us.

Firstly, we have the lot number. If it is bold and printed in blue, the item is illustrated: eg 1234.

The second column denotes additional information of type: ‘A’ = Albums and Accessories; 'B' = Bullion Coins (.999 Silver, Gold or Platinum); 'DP' = Die Proof; 'E' = Banknote Essay; 'L' = Literature; 'M' = Medals or Medallions; 'P' = Proof or Piedfort coin; 'S' = Specimen; and 'T' = Trade Tokens. Please note that these abbreviations and the illustration of lots, form part of the lot description.

The figure in the right-hand column is our “realistic-conservative” estimate of value. (If a lot attracts tax for Australian buyers, the estimate is followed by a dagger symbol). You may bid at, above or below estimate. The reserve price for almost every lot is 75% of estimate (rounded to the nearest bidding step). Bids below this level will not be considered.

1. AUCTIONEERMossgreen Auctions (Mossgreen), a company incorporated in the State of Victoria, is the auctioneer, and adheres to the standard terms of sale of the Australasian Philatelic Traders Association.

2. DESCRIPTIONSWe endeavour to describe lots fully and ac-curately. The description of a lot comprises 1) the codes to the left of the description; 2) the description; and 3) any illustration of the lot or part of the lot appearing in the catalogue or on the Mossgreen website. (The various codes and symbols are explained on the previous page).

3. ESTIMATESThe figure in the right-hand column following each lot description is a usually conservative estimate of the auction value of the lot in Australian dollars. A bidder may bid at, above or below the estimate. Bids below the reserve price (usually 75% of the estimate) will not be accepted. There is no reserve on lots listed at $50 or less, or lots for which the word “Offer” is used in place of the estimate.

4. BIDDINGBids may be made to Mossgreen from the com-pany’s website, by mail, by fax, or by e-mail. Bids may also be made in person, by phone or from the internet during the auction (by prior arrangement) or through an agent attending an auction. An agent must advise Mossgreen of the person(s) for whom bids are being submit-ted or else the agent will be personally liable for payment and delivery of any lots purchased. Mossgreen reserves the right to refuse any bid, or to refuse bids from any person, for any rea-son. In most cases, Mossgreen’s bidding steps are as follows:

Increment Amount Dollar Range

$20 $0–$500$50 $500–$1,000$100 $1,000–$2,000$200 $2,000–$5,000$500 $5,000–$10,000$1,000 $10,000–$20,000$2,000 $20,000–$50,000$5,000 $50,000–$100,000$10,000 $100,000–$200,000$20,000 $200,000–$500,000$50,000 $500,000–$1,000,000

Mossgreen reserves the right to raise or lower postal bids (depending on the bidder’s apparent intention) to conform to these bidding steps.

5. TELEPHONE BIDDINGBidding by telephone during the course of a public auction is permitted. However, clients wishing to use this service must contact Mossgreen at least 24 hours before the auction. [To request a copy of our pamphlet “Assistance for Phone Bidders” please phone Maja Gojkovic on (03) 9508 8888 or email [email protected]]

6. LIVE INTERNET BIDDINGBidding from your own computer during the auction is available. However, clients wishing to use this service must contact Mossgreen at least 24 hours before the auction.

7. GOODS & SERVICES TAX (GST)

Australian law requires that GST equal to 10% of the knock-down or sale price of a taxed lot shall be payable by the buyer, unless the taxed lot is exported to another country. Taxed lots are indicated in the catalogue by a dagger symbol following the estimate figure: eg 150†. GST equal to 10% of the amount of any fees or charges added by Mossgreen is also payable by Australian buyers.

8. BUYERThe buyer of a lot shall be the person to whom the lot is sold (“knocked-down”) by Mossgreen. In the event of equal bids being received, the earliest such bid shall be successful. In the event of a dispute, Mossgreen shall have abso-lute discretion in the settling of the dispute. A lot is at the buyer’s risk once it has been sold (“knocked-down”) but ownership (legal title) will not pass to the buyer until Mossgreen has received payment in full for the lot

9. PAYMENTPayment is due immediately a lot is sold, or immediately upon receipt of an invoice. In addition to the price for which a lot is sold, the buyer shall pay a premium of 24% of that price, plus any fees for postage packing and insurance applicable or credit card fees that are charged by Mossgreen, plus GST as appropriate. Payment by credit card will incur a surcharge of 2% for MasterCard and Visa pay-ments and 3% for Amex payments, plus GST.

Payment should always be made in Australian dollars. If payment is made in another currency the buyer shall add the equivalent of $A50 or 3% of the invoice total, whichever is higher, towards bank fees.

In the event that the buyer does not make pay-ment in full for the lot(s) within 30 days from the date of the invoice, Mossgreen shall have the right to exercise any one or more of the following rights and remedies:

1) To impose an accounting fee of $100 per month (or part thereof) plus compound in-terest at the rate of 5% per month (or part thereof) of the total amount outstanding;

2) To terminate the contract with the buyer, in which case any monies received from the buyer shall be forfeited to Mossgreen;

3) To terminate the contract and resell the lot(s) at any time, in which case any result-ing shortfall, plus costs including account-ing fees, interest, insurance and resale ex-penses, shall be met by the original buyer;

4) To apply any monies due at any time from Mossgreen to the buyer in payment of the outstanding amount;

5) To take legal action against the buyer for damages for breach of contract.

10. RETURN OF LOTSA lot may be returned, within a reasonable time, only because of an error in the descrip-tion: see clause 2 for the definition of “the description”. A lot that has been inspected by the buyer or by the buyer’s agent cannot be returned for any reason. A lot that is illustrated in the catalogue or on the Mossgreen website or of which an illustration has been supplied to the buyer or to the buyer’s agent cannot be returned for any reason that is apparent from the illustration. A lot expressed to be a “range”, “group”, “selection”, “array”, “collection”, “accu-mulation” or similar, or any other lot containing more than 10 items - excepting sets of stamps - is always offered “as is” and cannot be returned for any reason. Similarly, other lots offered “as is” cannot be returned.

11. “EXTENSIONS”A request for an extension to submit a lot to a recognised expert or expert committee for a Certificate of Authenticity must be made in writing prior to or on the day of the auction. Mossgreen shall have an absolute discretion not to grant an extension. [In particular, an ex-tension will not normally be granted if the lot is offered with a recent Certificate of Authenticity or if the stamp(s) has/have perforated initials (perfins).] If an extension is granted, the buyer must make payment in full for the lot including the buyer’s premium, in accordance with the terms of Paragraph 9. The amount paid includ-ing the buyer’s premium will be refunded in full if the lot is returned with an acceptable “bad” Certificate. All costs associated with obtaining a certificate shall be borne by the buyer, unless the lot is found to be not as identified in the catalogue, in which case all costs associated with obtaining the Certificate shall be refund-ed to the buyer, and borne by the seller. A lot described as being defective in any way may not be returned should the Certificate obtained mention any fault not noted in the lot descrip-tion. The buyer shall not be entitled to reject an item if the certificate includes any finding that does not materially affect the grading of the lot. Unless otherwise agreed, nomination of the appropriate expert or expert committee shall be made by Mossgreen, and Mossgreen will be responsible for submitting the lot to that expert or expert committee. NB: Should Mossgreen agree to the buyer’s nomination of an expert or expert committee, the extension granted will be for a period of no more than 90 days from the date of the auction. If a Certificate has not been obtained within 90 days from the date of the auction, the extension shall lapse and Mossgreen may thereafter refuse to accept the return of the lot.

12. ACCEPTANCEThese Terms of Sale shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the State of Victoria.

13. GOVERNING LAWSubmitting a bid by any method constitutes acknowledgment and acceptance of these Terms of Sale.

IMPORTANT NOTICEEver rising costs, especially courtesy of Australia Post, have left us no option but to raise our commission rate.

When sophisticated auction buyers prepare their bids, they routinely take into account the add-ons

they will incur.
