The Truman Plan

By:

Harry S. Truman

The Truman Plan was a strategy

used by Truman to stop the

s p r e a d o f c o m m u n i s m b y

containment during the Cold

War. This was done by giving

military and economic aid to

countries that are feared to go

communist.

The Marshall Plan was a US

project that rebuilt and

created a stronger economy

for the countries of Western

The Berlin airlift was a series of "ights to Western

Berlin to supply the civilians with necessities.

Western Berlin (non-soviet) was cut off from all

supplies after the erection of the Berlin Wall. The

Berlin Airlift was used instead of military force

because we didn’t want to enter another war. The

airlift lasted 11 months while the Berlin wall was

up and four months after it was destroyed.

China turns communist when Mao

Zedong leads a violent revolution

against the Chinese Nationalist Party.

Mao quickly tries to industrialize

China by sending able-men to work

on country projects. His policies were

very radical and some of them deadly;

He ordered executions of people such

as landlords and

counterrevolutionaries. China going

communist causes fear in America

during the Cold War.

War between the republic of Korea and the Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea. North Korea ( Republic of Korea) invaded South Korea ( Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea)on June 25, 1950. The war started at Korea’s 38th parallel, which divided North and South Korea. North Korea pushed South Korea into a corner very quickly, until UN intervention, which pushed North Korea past the 38th parallel. Eventually North Korea will push again to the 38th parallel. A cease!re is signed and the war is signed and the war remains at a standstill.

The Eisenhower Doctrine declared that a country could request American economic aid or aid from U.S. military forces if it was being threatened by another state. This was made in because of the possibility of a war, threatened as the Soviet Union increases in power.

Robotic spacecraft missions launched by the Soviet Union. The Sputnik program was a series of robotic spacecraft missions launched by the Soviet Union. The !rst of these, Sputnik 1, launched the !rst human-made object to orbit the Earth. USSR beat us to sending an object into the sky. USSR has capacity to send their nuclear weapons further than we thought.

US spy plane shot down by Soviet Union, which caused a great deterioration in the US-Soviet Union relationship. Could take photos of Soviet Bases. (1960). Results were harsh. The Paris summit is abandoned. Cold war attitudes hardened again. Khrushchev showed the world he could be tough.

A concrete barrier built by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) that completely enclosed the city of West Berlin. It was built in 1961. It was built because of all the people and money that were traveling from East Berlin to West Berlin.

Soviet Union was supplying

missiles to Cuba. US could not let

this happen and become bombed

so the Bay of Pigs invasion

occurred. This involved the US

army (with Cuban exiles)

attempting to capture the

Communist leader Fidel Castro. We

failed, but the crisis eventually

ended when the missiles were

subsequently sent back to the

Russian SFSR.

War between South Vietnam and North Vietnam. The US joined this war as a part of the “containment” effort. In the end, after numerous protests back at home and the needless loss of men, the US pulls out and the communist are the victors.
