LETTERS TO THE EDITORS

Dear Editors,I loved the writing on page 13 and 14.They were cool comic strips. I would enjoy moreof that. Maybe try using your space more efficiently.– MAGGIE, 2ND GRADE

Dear Maggie,Thank you for your suggestion. We would love for you to submit comics for future editions. We hope you enjoy!

Dear Editors,I think the comics are awesome, but they are a littleshort. I also think the story “Laser Tag in Philadelphia”is cool, but the third paragraph is too long. I think anew paragraph could start at the tenth sentence. Also, I think there should be more poetry, becausepoetry rhymes and it’s fun to read. – IZZIE, 3RD GRADE

Dear Izzie,Thank you for your feedback! There are poems in thisedition, and you can look forward to more comicsin the future!

Dear Editors,I like the comic “The New Pet,” but it is short. It could have some background, too. I think thereshould be more comics in the magazine. – ANDREW, 3RD GRADE

Dear Andrew,Thank you for your suggestion. We will try to putmore comics in future editions of the magazine.

The Tooth Fairy BY KARLYNN SMALLWOOD4TH GRADE

I lost my tooth the other night

I could find it

it was out of sight.

I looked under my bed, under my chair

I couldn’t find it anywhere.

I lost my tooth for a really long time

Where is it? So hard to find!

Then I got a vision in my head

It was the tooth fairy creeping in my bed

She was the one who took my tooth!

She left me a coin or was it a quarter

I knew she was the one

In my house right before the sun!

How to be Friends with a UnicornBY JACK ROSEN 3RD GRADE

What you think is a deer could be a unicorn! You might as well makefriends with it. But how? It is a rare creature so who wouldn’t want to takeadvantage of this special opportunity.Hum a song, soothing and joyful, and it will follow you. Choose a positivesong like “Happy”. Unicorns are positive creatures. Never sing rock and roll. They are very sensitive. Once the unicorn is in your house, play the pink, fluffy unicorn song from YouTube. After listening from that simple song, it will understand English.Next, ask the unicorn if you can ride it. It should say yes. Hop on its back and gently hugits’ neck. It will fly around for a while. The unicorn will then fly to the ground. Awesome! It should be hungry after the flying. Everybody knows unicorns love everything pink. The only problem is, when you’re getting out your vat of strawberry ice cream and pink marshmallows, the unicorn is screaming “PINK! PINK!” After it eats, it falls right to sleep. Finally, unicorns are very active. After its nap, play a game of chess or another game.It doesn’t mind losing. Every now and then, let it win. See its victory dance! Now you’re friends with a unicorn. You should name it and all that good stuff.Remember, keep it a secret. Good luck! See volume two: A Unicorn as a Pet.

How to DisguiseLike An Adult

BY SAMUEL COLLINS 4TH GRADE

Are you tired of listening to your mom and dad?Do they nag you to make up your bed and take

out the trash? Well, here’s one way to solve all yourproblems! You need to disguise yourself as an adult!

First to become an adult, get high top boots, this will give you some needed height. Now, put on adult

clothes. Look for things that kids wouldn’t wear.I recommend high tops, a collared shirt and tie or

or girls, make-up and high heels.Next, you need to get a deep voice. To get that go

o Party City. Ask for a voice changer and you canchange your voice deep. Finally, you should go put on the things I mentioned.

Make sure you look confident and you have your voice changer. So, it’s time to ask a brother or sister to make

sure you did it right. You can now vote for the next president. You can also go to

mall the without adult supervision! Enjoy passing for an adult!

Survival Guides

How toDisguiseYourselfas a ZombieBY ANTHONY REYES 4TH GRADE

If you don’t want to get bitten by a bloody, scaryzombie, listen to what I need to say. This advice will also prevent you from turning into one. This guide, clear and imperative, will help you get ready for a zombie invasion. First, get a pair of ripped jeans and pour ketchup allover yourself so you have the bloody texture of a zombie, take a bottle of baby powder and dab some on your face. This way you won’t appear to have human skin.Next, take those ripped jeans and plop ketchup in the holes. Now you’re finished looking like a zombie butyou need to smell like one too. Go and find a lake and dead leaves, this will make a perfect zombie perfume.Roll around like a dog. Really get in there. After that, you should go outside and see if it works. If it doesn’t, that’s unfortunate. If it does, time topractice walking like a zombie. Hold out your arms, straight out. Now walk like you’re sleep-walking or like your dead. Your feet need to be 24 cm away fromeach other. Your need to make a soft elephant noiselike a grunt. Now your zombie positionis ready. Then, go back inside slowlyso you don’t look like a tasty humanto them. Finally, you are ready. Time to go andfind other people to help them survive. You’ll want company. If you followed theseinstructions you are ready for a zombieinvasion. PLEASE do the last step becausethis guide would be totally worth nothingif you didn’t add the zombie perfume.Teach this to other survivors if you don’twant them to become ZOMBIES.(If you aren’t one already.)

How to Become Friends with BigfootBY LUCA SGARAMELLA 4TH GRADE

Have you ever wondered about meeting Bigfoot, you knowthat big, tall hairy monster that nobody has ever seen? When you do meet him, you will want to bring this along. This is a guide on how to become best friends with Bigfoot. Make sure he doesn’t tear this up, you’ll really need it.

First go in the woods and find a cave. This might take some time, be patient. When you find Bigfoot, tall and hairy, don’t freak out, all you have to do is stomp on his left foot (that is what monsters do to greet each other). Then greet him by yelling,”aaaaaaaoooogoouuu” which means, “want to play some Uno?” He will grunt. (This is Bigfoot lingo for “yes”. Bigfoot loves Uno.)

Next, set up the game and when you start playing never put down a draw four, you don’t even want to know what he will do if he loses or gets a draw four. Call domino’s pizza and ask for peperoni pizza because everyone loves peperoni pizza. Be sure to greet the delivery man yourself. You don’t want to scare the person off.

While you are waiting for the pizza, read a book; maybeThe Tortoise and the Hair. Make sure you read it in monster language. After you read the book the pizza will be there. Give him 7 pieces no more, no less. If you give him morethan 7 he will throw a chair at you, if you give him less than7 pieces of pizza he will stomp back home to his cave.

Finally, say,”aaaouuuuuuuooa” which means “it’s gettingdark, want to come over to my house to sleep over?”When he stays at your house, give him the top bunk orhe might destroy your house. Tell him a bedtime storyabout fairies and he will fall asleep. When he snores, you might want to use earplugs for everyone in your house, maybe your neighbors too.

Remember to bring this alongwhenever you feel like makinga new friend. Oh and whenhe comes over to your houseto sleep over, never forgetthose earplugs.

The Sled BreakerBY MAGGIE SGARAMELLA2ND GRADE

I never knew that breaking a bone would hurt so much.It was Valentine’s Day at Stanbridge Street Park whenmy mom and brother went sledding.

It was my last time sledding down the hill. I was faraway from the trees. Suddenly, I curved into a tree! At first it felt like a bruise. Soon it felt like a sprain. At home my mom told me if I could not walk bytomorrow, we would go to the hospital.

The next day we went to the hospital. I got three X-rays. Then the doctor said, “Your leg is broken.” Pretty soon they gave me a splint, a cast, and a boot. They also put me in a wheelchair and wheeled me to the parking lot. Then my mom drove me home.

A couple of months later we went to CHOP to get a cast.It was pink and blue. Another couple of months later I got a boot; not a winter boot, this one would allow me to walk. My mom and I drove home from CHOP. I tried walking but the boot was uneven with my bare feet. So we bought three-inch high heels (I still have them and the cast). The high heels worked. It was super hard to get dressed. At school I could pick one or two friends to eat lunch with me at recess in Mrs. Martin’s office and I did not go tospecials except for library. Soon after, I got my boot off!

This was my most exciting moment by far, even though it happened on Valentine’s Day!

Helping AnimalsBY BRIANNA DEVLIN4TH GRADE

Sofia loved animals. One day she thought toherself, “Maybe I should see if Emma wantsto help me raise money for the SPCA.”She asked and Emma said, “Yes, of course!”

Emma loved the same animals as Sofia, but they both liked most animals. Sofia loved pandas, monkeys, cheetahs, lions, and tigers. She knew that unicorns weren’t real, but she loved them too.

So they went to the SPCA right after school to get a donation sheet. They went to house after house until they had to go home. Almost every person gave them money. A lot of people gave $5.00 or even $10.00.

They raised $500.00. They even helped volunteer for bringing animals there, playing with theanimals, and feeding them. They had a lot offun and couldn’t wait to help again!

NarrativePointy NeedlesBY ANNA NUNEZ4TH GRADE

Have you ever went to the doctor to get shots?I have. It was dreadful!

One day I was at the doctor because I needed shots, but guess what? My mom tricked me! She told me that my cousin was getting the shots too, becauseshe knew I wouldn’t go without her. Then someone called my name. I was so frightened that I couldn’t even speak!

They put us in a plain white room and we had to wait for about 10 or 20 minutes. All I could imagine was the needle going into my arm already. I could feel the sweat running down my back. Finally, the doctor came in the room with a really pointy needle.

I wanted to sprint away from the doctor, but I couldn’t. The butterflies in my stomach were fluttering like crazy. He told me to look somewhere else so it wouldn’t hurt.

The needle pinched my upper arm. It felt like a bee stung me. Afterwards, he gave me a sticker because I didn’t cry. When we left my mom took me to get ice cream because I was so brave.

If I ever go to the doctor again I will remember tobe brave so my mom will take me to get ice cream again. Also, it actually didn’t hurt as bad as I expected. I was scared because I thought it would hurt a lot,but I could do it again. No problem!

BullyingBY ERIKA GARCIA-MENDOZA3RD GRADE

If somebody is saying mean things about you and your appearance, that’s bullying. If you see a person bullying somebody, don’t go and bully them too. You shouldtell an adult or make them stop bullyingthe person.

If nobody is there to help you, should you just let them bully you and make you feel that you are not special? No, you should go and tell an adult. Even if they scare you so you don’t tell on them, don’t listen to them.Go tell so they can stop bullying you.Help people so bullying can stop.

Standing DesksBY EDDIE FISHER 4TH GRADE

Kids sit in school for about 4.5 hours a day. There are these “standing desks” that allow you to stand while you are working, or playing. Will these desks effect the health of children? Let’s find out!

Stand Up Kids is a team that collects donations to try to get every child in a public school at a standing desk within 10 years. “…children need to MOVE MORE and SIT LESS.” they say. Mrs. Armour, my fourth grade teacher, was inspired and tried to earn standing desks for her fourth grade class. She earned 5 of them, and her class is loving them.

Kids can burn 15%-35% more calories while standing. Kids feel more engaged and pay attention more in class. They re-port feeling more awake. Children’s behavior improves when they are awake. Kids who move more have good creativity and their test scores increase. There is no downside to stand-ing, and it only takes two or three weeks of standing for chil-dren to get used to standing, so they won’t get tired while standing. We share a stool in our class when we use these desks and kids rarely need it. Standup kids does not recom-mend sit-stand desks because if people are able to choose sitting or standing, they will always choose sitting.

Standing desks have a footrest bar that they can lean on when the person gets tired. The desks that Mrs. Armour earned have a moving foot bar. “Children feel happierwhen they can move more and aren’t restricted to a chair,” Stand Up Kids says.

Standing desks are an efficient way to get people standing, and it doesn’t have to be only for school. There are manydifferent types of standing desks available. There are ones that you can attach to a regular desk, if you don’t wantto buy a whole new desk and have nothing to useyour old one for.

Sedentary lifestyles can lead to cancer, back andneck pain, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heartdisease and many other problems. Sitting for 4-6hours a day makes your more sedentary. We need to move! We need to stand.

People should stand up for education (literally),before it’s too late!

Stop HuntingBY JUAN HERNANDEZ-MENDOZA 2ND GRADE

People should stop hunting animals!

If people keep hunting animals they can becomeextinct. Some animals became extinct because ofhunters hunting them to extinction. An exampleis an animal called the Tasmanian wolf that peoplehunted to extinction.

Another reason not to hunt is that you might get in trouble. If you kill a panda in China you could have to go to jail for up to 10 years. No one wants to go to jail.

People should stop hunting animals!

BikeBY MEKHI FARLOWKINDERGARTEN

Dear Mom,Can I have a bike?I promise toclean my room.I will do myhomework.I will be niceto my sister.

Love, Mekhi

THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD...

School should stop cutting music classes. Do peopleeven care about music? Schools don’t have enoughmoney so why do schools cut music classes first?

First when you learn music in music class when you get homeyou can show your parents. You can even teach them too! To me, music is my life. I definitely care about music. But I don’t’ think some schools do.

Next, why do some schools get rid of music classes firstcan’t’ school make money another way like a bake sale orget rid of another subject? Music helps you concentrate.

Finally, at my school there is an awesome music teachernamed Mr. Speicher. He’s doing it because he also caresabout music. He wants children to learn music.

So music is my life. It is important to me. If we worktogether we can stop getting rid of music classes.I want music classes in every school!
