SEPTEMBER 2019
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I extend a warm welcome to all new
and returning students, their families and to our dedicated staff. Since the June
newsletter we would like to welcome Mr. Halabi and Ms. Richardson to the
staff of École St. Cecilia. A new school year brings with it renewed energy, a
sense of optimism and excitement. I look forward to working alongside you in
providing engaging, meaningful programming for all students. As a well-
established Catholic school community filled with the Gospel values of Jesus
Christ, École St. Cecilia, will continue to develop students’ spiritual, academic,
physical and social potential throughout the 2019-2020 academic year.
I look forward to a wonderful year and working together with you and the
whole community. Your involvement in your child’s daily school experiences
is vital. Be sure to take the time to chat with your child each day about his/her
classroom activities, provide a regular homework and reading time, and check
their planners for information from school. In order to ensure your child has
the very best education, it is important we keep the lines of communication
open at all times. Education is truly a collaborative effort between home and
school, as you have valuable information that will assist in programming for
your child. Working together, we will strive to provide the best possible education experience for all your
children. Education is a partnership between school and families and the staff looks forward to working with
you throughout the coming year, and are here to support you. If you have questions or concerns, please
contact your child’s teacher.

A Prayer for a New School Year:
Spirit of God, fill our hearts with a desire to seek truth and rejoice in beauty. Help us to know what is pleasing
to you and to understand what is right and good in your sight. Give us the spirit of learning that we may please
you by our thoughts and love you in your creation. Give all teachers your constant encouragement and guide
them in their good work. Spirit of God, make us effective witnesses of your truth to all whose lives we touch.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.
Amen.

Hello Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of Students who attend École St. Cecilia Jr High!
Your School Advisory Council (SAC) needs YOU!! Our council meets 6-8 times per
year at 5:30pm at the school. Our meetings typically last less than 45 minutes and we
use that time to support our students’ success at school by getting informed about
school activities, discuss future school plans, support the bi-annual CASINO, and most
importantly, connect with our fellow parents and community members.
As a parent or guardian of a St. Cecilia Tiger, you are a member of our SAC! Feel free
to join us at our Annual General Meeting on September 19th, 2019 @ 6:30
pm in the large gym. Come and participate in the important conversation about our
children’s junior high school.
Thank you!

Power teacher Pro Gradebook
Power Teacher Pro Gradebook Explained video for parents: https://youtu.be/boVV98DfVUg
In this revised gradebook, when a teacher creates an assignment, they attach at least one
key learner outcome to that assignment. Along with the numerical grade of the
assignment, a teacher also assesses the connected learner outcome(s) chosen in terms
of levels of achievement (beginning, approaching, proficient and exemplary). In the quick-
look ups on PowerSchool, which can be accessed at any time, the achievement of each
student is expressed numerically as well through levels of achievement on the learner
outcomes chosen. This visual representation clearly leads parents, student and teachers
into dialogue about next steps in learning.
At the November and March Parent/student/teacher interviews, the PowerTeacherPro
gradebook along with student work will be excellent resources to engage in dialogue
about each student’s learning to date and to set goals for continued progress and
success. The subject level teacher will follow up through email with parents of students
who show signs of struggle who did not attend an interview.
The June 26th progress reports will include an assessment of student learner skills, a
percentage grade in Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and Religion as well as a
summary level of achievement (beginning, approaching, proficient, exemplary) for each
curricular learner outcome assessed during the term.
Parent user name and passwords can be accessed by calling the school office.
The ongoing outcomes-based assessment and reporting structure gives parents, students and
teachers clear information about student achievement which informs next steps in teaching
and learning for the continued progress and success of each student.

Archbishop of Edmonton
Dear Friends,
With summer now starting to fade, a new academic year begins. Students and teachers who are
looking ahead must inevitably feel some combination of hope and fear.
When we consider these coming months, we can learn something about the Christian life.
This next year, there will be flourishing, strengthening, learning and maturing, happening all around us
and within us. Hard times are going to come and go, and then come back around again. Alberta will
experience a dark season stretching on for months, with bitter cold and harsh weather. There are
many tests ahead of you, and assignments and reports and group projects as well.
And then all at once, when hope seems nearly gone, the sunlight will break through again. The
warmth you now feel will come back to us, the trees will burst into green, and on some happy day,
you and your teachers will step out the doors of your school into a summertime of rest.
The Christian life can follow a similar pattern.
A person’s entire time on earth, however long it may be, is a chance to learn in the school of virtue
and sanctity. It is our time for growing close to Christ Jesus. You are now preparing for an eternity of
freedom and friendship with God.
There will be hard times and tests in our lives. However, if we are willing to learn and grow in love,
then in the end, through the grace of God, we can be restored to the light and peace that God made
us for. As Christ says in Matthew's Gospel, "the one who endures to the end will be saved" (10:22).
Let us set out into this year, then, and into the rest of our lives, with our eyes fixed on the everlasting
joy of the gospel.
Richard W. Smith
Archbishop of Edmonton
