FEBRUARY 2020
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Well it’s hard to believe but we are beginning the month of February! We are
now officially past the half-way point of this school year. You can see that the
days are slowly getting longer and spring is just around the corner!
Parents, please make sure to take the time to fill your Alberta Education
Accountability Pillar and mail it directly to Alberta Education in the stamped
envelope provided. Our district places a great deal of importance on these
surveys. The more parents we have responding, the more we can get a sense
of how we are doing at St. Cecilia.
February is a great month for the students to reflect on what they have
accomplished to the mid-point of the current school year and what they want
to accomplish by year end. A mid-year strategy refocuses students and
ensures that they achieve their targeted goals. We have now officially changed
semesters and the students will switch the options they are in. They will
remain in these options for the rest of the school year. As parents, please
make sure to keep checking PowerSchool, so you can get a sense of how your
child’s learning has progressed since their last report card. As always, if you
have any questions about your child’s progress, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher at any time.
Parents will be able to access and print their child’s report card at 3:00 PM January 31, 2020 using their own
PowerSchool password. You will not be able to view and print the report card using your child’s password.
Our grade 9 students have been visited by O’Leary and St. Joe’s will be here later in February to help the
students make an educational decision about the next school year. All the students need to continually focus
on their schoolwork to be able to achieve success. Macdonald was here to present to interested students in
English and French Immersion programs. As well, JH Picard has been at the school to visit with the French
Immersion students and promote their program. High School Open Houses are as follows: O’Leary March 5

February is a short month with Faith Development Day, Family Day and Teacher’s Convention, but it is full of
activities and learning. Bon Voyage to a group of our French Immersion students and staff going to Quebec,
leaving February 6 and returning February 11. This is a wonderful cultural experience for the students.
Basketball season is in full swing and we are preparing for next year by hosting our grade 6 orientation
morning February 6th and our Open House on Thursday February 13th at 6:30 PM. If you know of anyone that
is interested in attending St. Cecilia next school year, please pass on our Open House date and time.
Shrove Tuesday is on February 25th, thanks to SAC for providing donuts for the entire school. Our Ash
Wednesday Mass will take place February 26th at St. Matthew parish beginning at 12:45 PM. We invite all
parents to come and join us for this mass as it is a wonderful way to begin our Lenten journey.
Please read the entire newsletter as it is full of valuable information. Have a great month and let’s hope Punxsutawney Phil doesn’t see his shadow on February 2nd. We hope everyone has a great second half of the
school year.

A Valentine Prayer:
I said a Valentine prayer for you and asked the Lord above to fill your heart and bless your soul with the
precious gift of love. I asked Him for sincere love, the kind that's meant to stay just like the generous love you
give to those you touch each day. I prayed for love from family and from every cherished friend, and then I
asked the Lord to give you his love that knows no end. Amen

Hello Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of Students who attend École St. Cecilia Jr High!
Your School Advisory Council (SAC) needs YOU!! Our council meets 6-8 times per
year at 5:30pm at the school. Our meetings typically last less than 45 minutes and we
use that time to support our students’ success at school by getting informed about
school activities, discuss future school plans, support the bi-annual CASINO, and most
importantly, connect with our fellow parents and community members.
As a parent or guardian of a St. Cecilia Tiger, you are a member of our SAC! Feel free
to join us at our General Meeting on March 10th, 2020 @ 5:30 pm in the
conference room. Come and participate in the important conversation about our
children’s junior high school.
Thank you!

Power teacher Pro Gradebook
Power Teacher Pro Gradebook Explained video for parents: https://youtu.be/boVV98DfVUg
In this revised gradebook, when a teacher creates an assignment, they attach at least one
key learner outcome to that assignment. Along with the numerical grade of the
assignment, a teacher also assesses the connected learner outcome(s) chosen in terms
of levels of achievement (beginning, approaching, proficient and exemplary). In the quick-
look ups on PowerSchool, which can be accessed at any time, the achievement of each
student is expressed numerically as well through levels of achievement on the learner
outcomes chosen. This visual representation clearly leads parents, student and teachers
into dialogue about next steps in learning.
At the March 17th Celebration of Learning the PowerTeacherPro gradebook along with
student work will be excellent resources to engage in dialogue about each student’s
learning to date and to set goals for continued progress and success. The subject level
teacher will follow up through email with parents of students who show signs of struggle
who did not attend an interview.
The June 26th progress reports will include an assessment of student learner skills, a
percentage grade in Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and Religion as well as a
summary level of achievement (beginning, approaching, proficient, exemplary) for each
curricular learner outcome assessed during the term.
Parent username and passwords can be accessed by calling the school office.
The ongoing outcomes-based assessment and reporting structure gives parents, students and
teachers clear information about student achievement which informs next steps in teaching
and learning for the continued progress and success of each student.

To Parents/Guardians:
We encourage you to read the summary report with your child to

Students from École St. Cecilia Junior High School’s Student Leadership Team
volunteered at the Mustard Seed Donation Centre as a part of a social justice
initiative at our school. This is the second of four visits that we will be making
during this school year. The students had a lot of fun interacting with people
donating items and other volunteers at the donation centre. When students were
asked what they valued the most from this experience they said that it was nice
seeing how many people donate items. Another key point that they noted is that,
when sorting, they still had to look for quality items that they would want to wear.
Just because these are donations for our city’s less fortunate does not mean that
they don’t deserve some quality items, too. The students are really looking
forward to their next visit!
