Principal’s Message

I hope that Spring Break was relaxing and that everyone has come back energized and ready for the last three months of school. The sprint to the end of the school year begins, however there is still much going on in April: the Concours d’art oratoire and the Wizard of Oz Musical, Québec Exchange Trip hosting and Festival Théâtre Jeunesse. All these activities only serve as proof that ESNI is more than a school; it is a community with its own culture and way of being.

Although many activities are occurring in the school, our focus is always on developing speaking, reading, writing and Math skills. An array of new books in our classroom libraries has made French and English texts more accessible to students and can help in fostering interest in reading. Encourage your child to read in French even though the language may be foreign to you, your interest in your child’s learning is an invaluable support to teachers. We are all partners in your child’s education and we need to remember to work together for greater achievement in a framework of high expectations.

On a personal level, I am happy to be a part of this community for the near future. I am grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with parents, students, staff and community members. I truly feel fortunate to be part of this community and invite you to drop the school, or contact me if you have anything you wish to discuss. You could also drop by my office for a cup of coffee and/or to talk so that I may get to know you or your child better.

inviting their grandparents to school in

the afternoon of June 1st. Our ESNI

Grandparents’ Day wishes to celebrate the

importance of grandparents (or memories of…)

in our students’ lives. More information to come

in the May newsletter.

Looking to get involved?

If you wish to volunteer some of your time or get involved with the St. Norbert Parent

Advisory Council. Please do not hesitate to contact the office or attend the next PAC

meeting on April 17th at 6:30pm in the ESNI Library. You are always welcomed

at school.

Concours d’art oratoire

The divisional finals of the Concours d’art oratoire will be held at 6:00 pm on April 4th at

at École St. Adolphe School. You are invited to come encourage our ESNI finalists. These

young girls and boys show determination and courage in presenting in French in front of a public

audience. Bravo!

We have been listening!

You might have noticed that the newsletter has been somewhat slimmed-down. Following feedback

from parents and in the interest of being pertinent and to the point, we have removed redundant

information from our newsletter. This means that the newsletter will be shorter, yet packed with

relevant information. Please contact the office if you have any questions about school policies or

practices. It would be our pleasure to answer your questions.

Improv

On March 16th, twenty students from École Ste. Anne Immersion School and ESNI participated in an

Improv Training Camp. Participants enjoyed learning new skills and having fun new friends. A

second Improv session is scheduled for May.

Festival Théâtre Jeunesse - FTJ

École St. Norbert Immersion has a long and proud history of presenting at the Festival thèâtre

jeunesse. This celebration of drama for the student by the students, is a great opportunity to

explore the dramatic arts in French. ESNI students will be presenting their FTJ play on May 8th at

1:30 pm at the CCFM (340 Provencher Blvd.).

In the meantime, students are working hard in preparation of their theatrical production.

Québec Exchange Trip - Hosting

During the last week of April (23rd to 30th), our exchange trip partners from Baie Saint-Paul will

be visiting our school and the surrounding areas. It will be a week packed with learning activities

and discovery. We are sure our guest will have fun and enjoy the ESNI school community

welcome.

The gym has been rockin’ lately with our basketball teams finishing up their seasons. Felicitations to the

Grade 8 boys for finishing in 2nd place overall and bringing home the Finalist banner. A big congratula-

tions goes out to the Grade 7 boys team who were league Champions this year. Way to go Panthers!

Physical education units covered in February were cross country skiing, badminton, and low organized

games. Students created simple games and presented them to colleagues. They gave feedback and modified

their games to make them safe and inclusive to all.

Grade 4-8 students that took part in the fishing club had a rough day on the ice back in February. Lake

Winnipeg showed it’s true colors and we were hit with wind and snow. Some students managed to catch

some fish and everyone had a good time regardless of the weather.

Our ESNI badminton teams have been chosen and students will be practicing hard this month to prepare

for the SRSD Championships on Friday May 4th.

We are hosting a tournament on Wednesday May 2nd here at ESNI and CSNC for students to prepare.

Good luck to…

Every Day is Pink Day!

On Wednesday April 11, St Norbert Immersion invites the community, staff and students to

wear a pink shirt in support of the Red Cross Pink Day.

The International Day of Pink was started in Nova Scotia when two high school students saw a

student wearing a pink shirt being bullied. The two students intervened, but wanted to do more

to prevent bullying. They decided to purchase pink shirts, and a few days later got everyone at

their school to arrive wearing pink. The result was an entire school that took a stand and began

working together to prevent bullying. We are having our own pink day to take a stand against

bullying.

We will make a commitment to being open minded, accepting differences and learning to re-

spect each other. We will be celebrating diversity. Students will work to educate others on

how to make a positive change in their school. We want to inspire everyone to celebrate the

power they have to make a difference and to reflect on what they can do themselves. Our goal

is to reach a time when all Canadians understand that “Every Day is Pink Day”.

times on these days are 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Starting Wednesday (April 4th), tickets

will be $5 and are available through the office. A letter explaining the ESNI Wizard of

Oz musical will be sent home on April 3rd.

Occupational

therapy

At School & Home

WHAT DO OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS DO?

An OT provides assessment and consultation to enable individuals to participate

in day-to-day activities as independently as possible.

These activities may include self-care activities (such as feeding, dressing or toilet-

ing), fine motor skills, leisure activities, and classroom skills. Handwriting prob-

lems and visual perceptual difficulties are also addressed in school-aged children.

The OT is concerned with ensuring an understanding of and match between the

student’s skills, abilities and the expectations placed on him/her in the school

setting.

SENSORY PROCESSING

WHAT IS SENSORY PROCESSING?

Sensory Processing is the ability to organize and interpret information we receive through the senses (sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, vestibular, proprioception, and interoception) from our own bodies and the environment. This enables us to produce an appropriate response for particular situations, the task and the environment. There are four types of

sensory behaviours (seekers, avoiders, sensors, and bystanders). In this issue we will discuss the Seeker Profile.

IS YOUR CHILD A SEEKER?

Here are some examples of what a child who presents with sensory seeking behaviours may do:

- Stand too close when talking to others and not have a good sense of personal space - Have an unusual tolerance for pain - Walk with loud, heavy steps - Enjoy jumping, spinning, bumping and crashing into things and people, sometimes to the point of being unsafe - Not know their own strength (s/he may rip paper when writing, break toys or hurt others by accident) - Prefer “rough play” on the playground. - Touch people and objects often - Fidget, has difficulty sitting still - Seek visually stimulating screens, shiny objects, or sunlight - Enjoy strong odors, even unattractive ones

-love loud noises, TV or music volume, crowds and places with lots of action

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A SEEKER?

Seekers are children who are busier and more engaged in senso-ry experiences. They need and enjoy high levels of sensory stim-ulation, and they will generate the extra input for themselves.

Sensory input can help stimulate kids to feel less sluggish. It can also soothe an “overloaded system” and help kids feel more organized in their own bodies and in space. Children may vary in the degree of seeking within each sensory system. Often when

they seek out the input, it is in ways that aren’t matched or ap-propriate to the environment. Then they can be seen as active,

engaging and excitable students.

If your child exhibits SEEKING patterns more than others and it is interfering with everyday life, here are some tips to

try:

-Add multi-sensory value to experiences, including visual, touch, auditory, and movement features

-Use bright lighting; look for environments with lots of visual interest and activity

-Incorporate sounds in daily activities (e.g. play music, use background noise) -Select clothing or furniture with a variety of texture -Help the child engage in physical activity before a thinking task -Incorporate movement in activities -Try chewing gum or drinking cold water from a water bottle when feeling restless or trying to focus

-Explore and use dynamic seating when working at a table activity (wobble stools, rocking chairs, standing desk, etc.)
