The views across the Mere from the surfaced path through Yell Wood are atmospheric and memorable, especially in autumn. Cole Mere is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and RAMSAR site attracting a wide variety of wildfowl and waders. Path Information The car park is divided into two sections. The area to the left is more level making parking and access to cars easier. Access to the Mere is across a soft, grassy, sloping green, although further improvements to the paths are planned. A surfaced path enters Yell Wood and follows the line of the Shropshire Union Canal. Access to the canal towpath itself is via steps or a steep, uneven track. The path on the southern side of the Mere is unsurfaced and muddy. Access back to the car park from the boat house is difficult and should not be attempted without help. Visitor Information Open dawn to dusk Free car parking for 20+ vehicles on hard-packed gravel surface Unsurfaced access from car park to paths, not currently suitable for unassisted wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
