Barry Svigals, FAIA

Barry Svigals, FAIA, artist and architect, is the founder and Managing Partner of Svigals

+ Partners, an architectural design firm in New Haven, Connecticut. Barry’s explorations in drawing, painting, and sculpture are part of the continuum of creative endeavors that inform and animate the architecture of the firm. “I see an essential part of my own art being an invitation to others. It must find a vitality in an active engagement with others; understanding I am only a part of the ecology of bringing creativity into being. In this way, the artwork is simply a result of the search for ones self, for the feeling of a collective humanity, and for the extraordinary beauty of the world. This particular creative engagement with Robert is an expression of that quest,” Barry Svigals.

Together Svigals and Reynolds explore the most fundamental acts of creating; “the often frightening confrontation with the blank canvas, the fears of rejection, the competitive nature, the ego; these were all diminished in the wake of the sheer joy of making. What ensued was an exhilarating exploration into the act of creating. But the most significant dimension of this creative dance was a deeply engaging collaboration that challenged all notions of the individual artist and his private singular vision. In the end, we had no idea who made what. It was unimportant,” Barry Svigals.

Robert Reynolds

Robert Reynolds is an artist and the owner of Reynolds Fine Art. He is primarily self-taught and has been drawing and painting all his life. Robert has never lost the simple love for making marks on paper and carries a drawing book with him everywhere he goes. He has painted and worked all over the world.

Reynolds likens the energy of this collaboration with Svigals to jazz music. “One of us will start with a riff, then the other picks up where the last left off, spinning off of that energy. We continue like that until we both see something cohesive take shape. This collaboration is full of challenge and reconciliation. Each individual challenges the canvas with his own mark-making technique, then we reconcile the differences until we both see a unified piece emerge,” Robert Reynolds.
