Second Sunday of Advent
From Fr. PaulFrom Fr. PaulFrom Fr. PaulFrom Fr. Paul
Dear Friends,
Before we know it, Christmas will be here. John the Baptist in today's Gospel calls us to "prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." Most of all, we need to prepare the way in our hearts for Him to be welcomed. Is there anything in our lives that leads us away from the Lord? Do we set aside a little time for prayer each day? Are we looking beyond our own needs to help those around us?
As an Advent project, please be generous to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Joseph or Friends of Francis at St. Francis, so that we can help our brothers and sisters in need. Also, there are still tickets available for the bus trip on December 17 to the La Salette Shrine in Attleboro - see the bulletin notice and call the office to reserve your ticket.
Finally, please note the Christmas Mass schedule in this bulletin, and begin making plans now. There are the Sunday Masses on the usual schedule, and then there are the Christmas Masses, beginning on Sunday afternoon, December 24. Since the 4:00 Christmas Eve Vigil Masses are the most crowded, consider attending either the Midnight Mass or a Christmas Day Mass, for a less crowded and more prayerful alternative.
Fr. Paul

In an effort to become more efficient and more lovingly honor the memory of your loved ones this Christmas, the list of names of those for whom flower donations are made will not be published in the Christmas season bulletins. Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults RCIA
Are you an adult who has not yet been baptized and would like to explore the possibility of being baptized?
Are you an adult who was baptized in a non-Catholic Christian community and would be interested in entering into full communion with the Catholic Church?
Are you an adult who was baptized in the Catholic Church as a child, never received further faith formation, and would like to pursue reception of the sacraments beyond baptism?
Are you an adult who did not complete your Religious Education and would like to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation?
If any of these descriptions applies to you, it would be good for you to consider your possible participation in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults – RCIA. Please feel free to pass this notice on to a family member of friend.
The RCIA is the process of spiritual and catechetical formation through which adults decide to be baptized or enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. The next meeting for the 2018 RCIA Program
will be on Sunday, December 31, 2017 after the
11:00AM Mass at Saint Francis of Assisi Church.
Please contact Deacon Bob at
[email protected] if you are interested in
participating or have questions.

Thank you to all who donated gift cards to help the less fortunate at Thanksgiving. We are now requesting gift cards to help make Christmas more joyful for those in need. If you can, we are looking for $25.00 gift cards to either Target, K-Mart, or Wal-Mart for those children who will need our help. As always, we appreciate your help during the holiday season.
Thanks and God Bless You, Jerri for Friends of Francis

Second Sunday of Advent
New Weekday Mass Schedule for 2018 As you may recall, the Collaborative began with 3 priests in 2014, but since Fr. Ed Doughty resigned in 2016, we have struggled to minister all the Masses with 2 priests and various combinations of part-time priests, without a long-term solution. We also have to minister at 3 or more funerals (average) every week. Also, we are fortunate that there are three other parishes nearby that offer other options for weekday Mass. For these reasons (and others), after consulting with parish staff members, Parish Council members, and some parishioners, I have decided that, beginning on January 2, there will be one Mass in the Collaborative each weekday (Monday - Saturday) at 8:30am. This new Mass time will allow priests to prepare for any funerals that begin at 10am. It also will help any parishioner traveling from one parish to the other to avoid the worst morning traffic around Medford Square.
Beginning on January 2, the new weekday Mass schedule will be:
St. Joseph - Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8:30am St. Francis of Assisi - Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 8:30am
For your information, weekday Masses at neighboring parishes are as follows: -Immaculate Conception, Malden - 6:30am Monday - Friday, 8am Saturday -St. Clement, Somerville - 7am Monday - Saturday (also 6:30pm Thursday) -St. Raphael, West Medford - 8am Wednesday - Saturday I realize that this schedule change will be inconvenient for some people, and it will require all of us to be flexible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.. Fr. Paul Sullivan

St. Joseph Music Ministry Christmas Events
The St Joseph's Parish young adult music group, "The Messengers", and our youth choir have once again been invited to lead the caroling at the Medford Public Library's special evening of Christmas caroling on Wednesday evening, December 13th, beginning at the library at 6:30pm (we are meeting for a warm-up/rehearsal in the church at 6pm). There will be refreshments immediately following the caroling.
We so hope many of you will come out and join us! This would be a nice opportunity for us to support, and to be part of, a special community event, and to get into the Christmas spirit!
If you should have any questions, or would like further information, please don't hesitate to contact Betsy at 781-396-0423 x125 or at [email protected]
On Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24th, at 3:30pm, the Messengers (our young adult music group) and the Youth Choir will be presenting a special Carol Festival - which will include a wonderful Christmas Pageant by the children of the parish - prior to the celebration of Christmas Mass at 4pm....
...and on Christmas Day, Monday, December 25th, at 11:30am, our Adult Choir will also be presenting our annual Christmas Carol Festival/Prelude Program prior to the Noon Mass.
Please plan to come to Mass one-half hour early, and help us make a joyful noise to celebrate the Lord's birth!
Hoping to see many of you at these joyous events!
