Fifth Sunday of Lent

From Fr. PaulFrom Fr. PaulFrom Fr. PaulFrom Fr. Paul

Dear Friends, Did you know that the word "Lent" comes from an Old English word that means "spring?" After all these snowstorms, let's hope and pray that we will soon enjoy springtime in nature, as well as a "springtime" of conversion and new life in our hearts as we approach Holy Week. Our parishes are blessed to have many volunteers who "make things happen," day after day, week after week. We rely on their generosity; they make our parishes such great communities. Today, March 18, we celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Day at the 12:00 Mass at St. Joseph, followed by a reception in the St. Joseph Social Center. Please offer prayers of gratitude for our many volunteers, and consider becoming a volunteer yourself if you aren't already. We are celebrating two important saints this weekend - Saint Patrick on March 17 and Saint Joseph on March 19. These are occasions for big celebrations for Irish and Italian people, but they are also days to pray for the needs of our families and parishes. Saint Patrick, the great missionary Apostle of Ireland is also the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Boston. Saint Joseph, the foster father of our Lord, is our parish's patron saint and also the patron of workers, husbands and fathers, and anyone in financial distress. Let us call on these saints for their help for our parishes and for our families. Father Paul

Bridge to Kindergarten Program

Saint Joseph School understands and appreciates the importance of the whole child. If your child would benefit from the gift of time, before entering Kindergarten, this is the program for you! This program is designed to promote a level of readiness skills necessary for a Kindergarten classroom. The Bridge program introduces children at a slower pace to the structure and routine of a Kindergarten classroom. Teachers encourage emerging learners through a variety of ways focusing on the development of each individual child. The Bridge is a five (5) full day program which includes Music, Art, Spanish, and Physical Education all taught by a specialist outside of their classroom. For more information, call us at 781-396-3636, email us at [email protected] or visit our website at www.stjosephschoolmedford.com.

Helps us make a difference.

Thank You from Heartbeat for Your Generosity and Caring

Thank you very much for your caring and generosity in the recent Baby Bottle Fundraiser at St. Francis of Assisi Parish! Your donations help to save lives and assist needy families choosing life for their children! Thank you also to all who worked to make the fundraiser so successful, especially the members of the Medford Collaborative Confirmation Class!

Three hundred thirty babies were born during 2017 to families we are assisting, along with over sixty-five so far this year. Providing assistance to so many needy families is increasingly challenging and costly! Our funds were very low. Thank you for helping us to keep serving! We are grateful to God and to you! Your prayers and support help us to share God’s love with the needy families we serve! God Bless all of you! The moms we assist find hope and know they are not alone. I wish we could share their smiles and hugs! Pregnant or new moms needing assistance should call 781-229-7887 or email us at [email protected]

Easter Flower Remembrances

In an effort to become more efficient and more lovingly honor the memory of your loved ones this Easter, the list of names of those for whom flower donations are made will not be published in the Easter season bulletins. Instead, we will place every Easter Flower envelope received in a basket near the altar and all your loved ones will be prayerfully remembered as the Special Intention and in the Prayers of the Faithful at our Easter Masses. We are grateful for your generosity and understanding.

St. Joseph Fridays at 7:30pm in the lower church

*Please note there will be no Stations of the Cross at St. Joseph on Good Friday due to the 7pm service.

The Light is On For You

Confessions will be heard on

Wednesdays from 6:30pm - 8pm throughout Lent

at St. Francis of Assisi (upper church) and

St. Joseph (lower church).

Lenten Regulations

Abstinence: Catholics over 14 years of age are

bound to the obligations of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. Meat should not be consumed on days of

abstinence.

Fasting: Catholics from the age of 18 to 60 are

bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday

and Good Friday are the days of fasting. On these

days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other

meatless meals, sufficient to maintain one’s strength, may be consumed, but together they

should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed.

As many of you know, during the Holy Thursday Liturgy (7pm on March 29th at St. Joseph), the celebrant reenacts the gospel by washing the feet of twelve people. We are in need of volunteers who are willing to have their feet washed.

If you would like to take part in this special liturgy, please contact our Collaborative Office at 781-396-0423. We hope you will consider participating in this beautiful ritual.

Would you like to be one of the twelve?

All hands on deck! Can you help decorate our

Churches for Easter? The “Environment Committees” are once again in the process of preparing to decorate our churches for Easter.

The St. Joseph environment committee plans to decorate on Saturday (Holy Saturday), March 31st, beginning at 10am, and the committee from St Francis of Assisi will be decorating at 4:30pm on Good Friday, March 30th, following the Good Friday 3pm service.

As the old adage states, “Many hands make light work”! There is always a need for extra hands, and the committees would be most grateful for your help. If you would like to assist them in their efforts to make the churches especially beautiful for Easter, please contact the parish office as soon as possible, either by e-mail or at 781-396-0423. Thank you!

Annual Palm Sunday Procession and Ecumenical Blessing of Palm

Sloane Garden at the intersection of Salem Street and Riverside Avenue (in front of Century Bank ). Following the service, each group will return to their respective church for Palm Sunday services.
