Term 4 Week 7 2014

Last Friday night we celebrated in Moree the NBSA Year 12 graduation night. Three students were successful this year in attaining the HSC. Travis Brazier, Peter Adams and Brendan Sweeney were presented along with seven other young people from Boggabilla, Mungindi and Goodooga. These 3 young men really stuck to the HSC task and have been rightly rewarded for their efforts. Parents and family were present and I know that they were so proud. The teachers also were in high spirits and thrilled for the boys who they have come to know so well over the recent years. Great job everyone!

Brendan Sweeney Mr Odgers

Travis Brazier Mr Kirkland

Peter Adams Mr Kirklan

The Honourable Mr Kevin Humphries has seen a fair bit of Collarenebri over the last week with his opening the Medicare Local Primary Garden and then taking on the guest speaker role at the farewell. Thank you Mr Humphries. The Garden has certainly brightened up the area outside the Stage 1 room and is worth a look.

Mr Peter Gibbs made an enormous impression this week when he spoke with us about the iProwd program. Peter is an ex-shearer, footy player and TAFE teacher who now supports Aboriginal people to complete the TAFE

certificate which prepares them for the Police Force. Peter’s common sense words and laconic style was really

Mr Odgers is starting to get out and collect money and notes for the secondary excursion. Please be fully aware that permission notes are essential and the low cost is as a result of a significant subsidy from the school. The week does represent terrific value for money, and I certainly wish I was going with the gang. Entry fees, food travel and accommodation all add up, but I know the students will remember these types of experiences for their whole life, and it is really worth getting the kids away if at all possible. We remain strongly committed to the role that the excursion program plays in helping students stay engaged with school and positive about life and all things school. This year they are going to enjoy all that Qld has to offer.

Finally, I wish to welcome back Ms Rebecca Fuggle, who has had some time at home with family, but is now ready to finish off the year with us. Great to have you back Ms Fuggle, we missed you and so did the students.

Thanks everyone.

Kind Regards,

Rob Malcolm

HEAD TEACHER SECONDARY STUDIES

(REL.)

As the year draws to an end, students have been busy finishing assessment tasks and doing in-class tests while teachers are preparing to write their reports.

This is also the time of year where planning for next year is being done. Year 11 students have all made their subject selections and these are being revised so that students have the pathway to an HSC or ATAR if their possible future careers will need university study. Staff will provide advice to students individually and we invite parents to discuss the options for their child. The HSC, the Board of Studies and universities can appear very confusing and this becomes more so when VET and TVET are involved – and this is the case for almost all parents and students across NSW. All parents and students are welcome to discuss concerns so that

students are in the right courses for successful completion of Years 11 and 12.

Stage 5 students will also be making subject choices for their electives over the next week. Information on the options will be sent home and students will be given information on each subject and its requirements. If parents have any questions or would like to discuss their child’s choices please contact me.

The Bush Tucker garden which has been established by Chris Kirkland and his Agriculture and Primary Industries classes at the Ag Plot is thriving –as is the orchard that they have planted. The Bush Tucker Garden has been funded with a seeding grant from the Catchment Management Authority – no pun intended. Thanks to Mr Ray Shepherd and Larry Flick for their advice and support and to those people who have offered for assistance with fencing materials and farm supplies.

Mr Kirkland has also been busy on weekends with the Far West Rugby League Academy. Participation in the program requires a high level of fitness and commitment by students so Mr Kirkland has expanded the fitness training program at the new school gym. Each evening there is a large group of students (not just the footballers in the program) of various ages, teachers (not just PE teachers) and some community members being put through a gruelling fitness regime. Well done!

Primary Industries

Students in Year 11 and 12 and some Year 10 students who are interested in doing Primary Industries in 2015 attended a one week training and work placement at Dubbo TAFE in Week 3.

The two Units of Competencies which students achieved were Crutching and Tractor Operations.

Not only is this part of their HSC study, it also means that students have real skills in areas where they can seek employment in the local area.

The TAFE trainers were really impressed with the capacity of the Collarenebri students and Mr Kirkland was impressed with their maturity and ability to mix with students from other schools.

Guess Who…

The bright, red dust billowed, racing stray eucalyptus leaves through the wind. I inhaled, breathing in ‘home’. The sigh of relief that I’ve been waiting for, for months. I’m going back to the red dirt country, where I can be myself, live free, see my brothers, family and mates.

The city was just too boring and loud. So after months living in the loud city, I’m going back where I belong. No more loud car horns, constructions sites and tired workers walking around, unhappy and wild.

I hated waking up to car horns, people yelling out their windows to other drivers saying, “Hurry up! I’m going to be late for work!”

But now I’m going back to the country.

The first thing I see as I drive across the bridge is young kids swinging off a rope in a tree and diving into the muddy waters. I grew up swimming, and as soon as I laid my eyes on that sight, I knew I was home.

Food Technology

What a busy semester in Food Technology. The Food Technology class have been making bread, catering for

school events and keeping up with their studies. This term the students have been studying food for special occasions. The young ladies have been researching and designing cakes for special occasions. Some of the cakes include; jelly stain glasses window cakes, choc ripple cake and red velvet cake with white chocolate ganache and chocolate curls. The students have also made fancy milk shakes, decorated cup-cakes, cinnamon scrolls, focaccia and stain glass window cookies. The students have worked hard and have extended their skills. They can be very proud of their results. Watch this space in the following newsletters to see some pictures of the ginger bread houses and thanksgiving dinner. Well Done ladies. Cheers Mrs Jay Medhurst

Intensive Swimming

Last week saw the beginning of the Intensive Swimming program in our Infants/ Primary department. All of the students are enjoying learning skills both in and out of the water. The weather has been very warm and our students are eager to make their way to the pool. We will be at the pool again this week and students are reminded to have your swimmers and a towel in your bag every day. Sunscreen is available at the pool for students to apply so they do not get sunburnt.

Well done to our upper primary students for their efforts in the Year 6 farewell cake stall on Thursday. There was a huge variety of sweets for all to purchase. Many thanks to all of those helpers who donated cakes and sweets for the stall. We always enjoy cream cakes and chocolate icing.

Transition to Kinder.

There will be a parent information session on Wednesday the 19th of November at 2:00pm. It will take place in the K/1 classroom and parents are encouraged to bring along your child’s immunization and Birth certificate. The transition lessons will take place in weeks 8, 9 and 10. We can’t wait to see our new students and welcome them to school.
