Secretary’s Report

On behalf of the executive and g eneral Committee Members, it gives me pleasure as Secretary to submit the 104th annual Report for your consideration and adoption.

This report documents the activities of the Collaroy Surf Life Saving Club Inc. for the 2015 - 2016 Season and includes the Audited Financial Statement and Balance Sheets for the year ended 30th april 2016.

General CommitteeThe Annual General Meeting occurred on the first Sundayof august 2015 and was well attended by members. Much spirited discussion occurred with some constitutional changes considered.

The Executive remained the same - Greg Broome, Geoff Small, Neil armstrong, Luke Hochkins, Darryl g ilmartin and Phil Mickan.

PatrolsPatrols were diligent on the beach and I congratulate them for ensuring that we have provided a safe beach with no major incidents. It is pleasing to report that no lives were lost during the 2015-2016 season. a number of SLSa awards were gained during the season; however, I would encourage as many patrolling members as possible to gain awards next season, as we are constantly asked to have more awards available on each patrol. Volunteer patrols were utilised on Christmas Day and for the State and Australian Title weekends. In general, they were all well attended. This enables us to consider doing the same thing next year. Thank you to all those that patrolled at these times, enabling our competitors to compete.

CompetitionOverall, the results for Collaroy during this season have been good. The Board and Ski section is growing and there is much enthusiasm in this area. The results of different carnivals are available later in the report and we thank everyone who competed, whether or not they made finals or gained a medal.

a highlight was our results at the australian Championships, held on the Sunshine Coast, with events spread between Mooloolaba, a lexandra Headland and Maroochydore in Queensland. again, results and the Touring Team Manager’s report are available later in the annual Report.

From all at Collaroy, thank you to our competitors for their dedication to training and for representing our Club. To the coaches who spend countless hours with their Sections to obtain the results achieved this year; again you have done us proud.

The annual Swimming Club versus Surf Club swimming race was held on 20th March 2016.

Community ServiceThe Beach Club held their traditional ANZAC Day sunset service at Collaroy Beach, and one of our boat crews was again part of that tradition by laying a wreath at sea.

The Disabled Surfers’ association held their annual carnival at Collaroy Beach.

The Club also hosted our ongoing Sea Turtle Program, where disabled children are able to be hosted at the beach, enjoying a BBQ with some Club members.

Pictured at the Collaroy rock pool (left to right) are Collaroy members Christian Loone, Fiona Hall, Jake de Kort and Annabelle Loone with two members of the Sea Turtles Program, Rachel Pereksles and Edward Sharp

We also assisted at the annual Pub2Pub Fun Run.

We provided a morning of education in surf skills and first aidon the beach, to a group of second year medical students from Notre Dame University.

We provided basic surf education and condition awareness to around 50 students and teachers from Warakirri College from Fairfield. Many of the students had never been to the beach orseen the sea.

FunctionsThe Life and Distinguished Service Members’ Luncheon was held on January 17th and as always was a great event. On this day, the Club recognises the members past and present, who have given great service and helped make the Club into what we know today. Our guest speaker was Doug Patrick, the oldest patrolling member of Collaroy.

Club President Greg Broome and Doug Patrick. Doug is our oldest patrolling member.

The Golf Day in January was held at Long Reef Golf Club, and once again was a great success. Well done to the g olf Day Committee and helpers, who spend many hours organising the day on behalf of the Club, and raising precious funds to enable us to provide our service to the public.

NippersOur Junior Members have also had a successful season. Under the leadership of Darryl Gilmartin, they have been very successful at carnivals and at the Club on Sundays. To Darryl and the entire Committee, congratulations on a great year.

Good luck to the U14s who are progressing through to cadets, and as we know, the future of this Club remains dependent on a strong Nipper section.

ConclusionI have enjoyed being Secretary for the 2015–2016 season. Special thanks go to the executive Committee of g reg, g eoff, Neil, Luke and Darryl for their support and counsel.

Thank you very much to my helpers on the annual Report. Graeme Gibson for chasing and collating Nipper reports, Janine Fahey for the membership list, table and my general reference point and Richard Trim for working on the photographs in the report. I also thank the Annual Report Committee, and to those that proofread the final o fering.

Sue Rossi and Janine Fahey. Janine is our Club Registrar.

To the g eneral Committee and Sub Committees thank you for your efforts and support, and being part of the decision-making.

To Bill Sheridan who attended many carnivals and captured many of the action shots shown within this report thank you again for your ongoing support. Congratulations on your Distinguished Service Membership for your important contribution.

To everyone who has provided photographs for the annual Report, keep on clicking!

To all competitors and Patrolling Members who have carried on the proud tradition of representing Collaroy Surf Life Saving Club with distinction thank you. To everyone who has assisted in any way during the season, you make Collaroy what it is today.

Life Membership

John Lewis

John joined the Collaroy Surf Club in 1986 and obtained his Surf Bronze Medallion during the season of 1989/90.

He was awarded Distinguished Service Membership (DSM) in 1998.

His surf history with the Nipper section included the Nipper Committee from 1989–1996, Nipper Representative to the Senior Committee for the same time, Nipper water safety, Nipper board coaching for 11 years, transportation of Nipper gear requirements to carnivals as well as assisting the Nipper section with Sponsorship.

John received the President’s Award in 1993 and 2003 and was a patrolling member from 1990–1994. He was Memorial Day Point score winner in 1999. He was on the g eneral Committee for 13 years where he had a 98% attendance record. He was the inaugural Junior Liaison Officer for 7 years

John was on many Committees including the Premises, expenditure Review and Constitution Committee. He was the Senior/Junior Carnival organiser for 2 years and on the Social Committee for 4 years, where John and this committee of 8 worked to ensure the success of the Boaties Reunion Dinner in 2000. He organised the annual Surf Club versus Swimming Club Swimming Relay and the Competitor Support raffle

He assisted or coached Board and Ski members for 14 years as well as attending Crescent Head Board and Ski training weekends.

He regularly helped at the east Coast Masters Carnival either as organiser or as part of the work party.

He helped organise; and assisted at many Memorial Day Championships. He provided coaching assistance to Red Beach (N.Z.) members on the Exchange programme for 11 years.

He was on many Touring team Committees including for the australian Titles in Kurrawa for many years, and numerous State and Branch Championships.

Page 7

John has been a member of the Collaroy Surf Club for 29 continuous years, always assisting where needed. In his early years, he helped build up the Nipper Section after the Section had a long hiatus.

He assisted the then Nipper Chairman, Rick Dilger at Committee level and on the Beach. Whether it was water safety, towing trailers to carnivals or ensuring that all the required gear was in good condition – nothing bothered John.

As John has helped competitors in many direct ways, he is proud to see them go on to win Branch, State and Australian Titles and medals.

John is a 100% Clubman – Branch, NSW State or officialdomat australian level has never interested him.

As the first Collaroy Nippers started to flow through to thSenior Club in numbers, John was appointed to the role of Junior Liaison Office , a position that was created to try and increase retention rates, and to ensure that the transition from Nippers to the Cadets was a smooth one.

In conjunction with Sean Kenny, by nurturing the talent that was going through from the Nipper ranks each year John was instrumental in forging the Board and Ski Team into a formidable unit that was to enjoy success right through to 2013.

His friendly low-key manner where enjoyment was number one was a hit with the youngsters, and having two young daughters involved, he quickly found that he had a rapport with coaching. He was a clever coach and training was always varied. One example with the younger group was where John said, “We are paddling around to Fisherman’s Beach.” Some of the youngsters were worried that they were not going to make it all the way there and back, but John turned the paddle into a “game“ where everyone was lined up in Indian file andthe person at the back had to race up to the front of the line to become the leader. By the time the paddlers had a couple of turns at being leader they arrived at Fisherman’s Beach. It was his way of disguising a long paddle and letting everyone have fun along the way.

In later years when he took the board sessions, they were hard sessions but there was always some sort of laughter coming from the group. Sean Kenny used to say, “It’s always great having Johnny around “.

Bill Sheridan

On the beach taking photos for a local Surf Club at a Sydney Surf Carnival during the 1985-86 season, Bill Sheridan was approached by then Club President, a lan Lance together with Vince Holdt and John McGennan to determine his interest in becoming the official photographer for the Collaroy Surf Club atthe 1987 NSW State Championships on their home beach.

The rest is history - 30 years on and Bill, in his quiet unassuming manner, is still taking photos for our Surf Club. He accepts no reimbursement for fuel, film (in the pre-digital days),development costs or postage.

Bill was the official Club Photographer at the 1987 NSWState championships held at Collaroy, the 1992 australian Championships also hosted at Collaroy and the 2000 Boaties reunion. Bill not only took photos on the night but also supplied all photos for the photo display and the tablemats had a montage of Bill’s photos. He was also present at the Celebratory Dinner at the Club in 1993 acknowledging Bill g oodman’s 50 continuous years as Club Treasurer.

a t the Surf Club book launch in 1996 that coincided with our 85th Birthday Ball at a Dee Why venue Bill was also taking photographs. On the Centenary weekend of Celebrations in October 2011, Bill was quietly moving around taking memorable photos.

He has also taken photographs at the annual east Coast Masters Carnival for many years. In 2003, with 8 other Collaroy members, Bill attended our sister Club in Auckland, New Zealand, Red Beach‘s 50th Birthday celebrations. Bill has also been hard at work at many major surf carnivals at which Collaroy has participated such as Branch, State and Australian Championships.

In the mid 1980’s the Nippers had reformed and were gaining strength in numbers, enjoying Sunday Club days and competition. Almost immediately, Bill involved himself with them and made himself available to photograph Nippers in action.

Perhaps one major achievement that Bill undertook for the Club pertained to our book ‘Vigilant and Victorious’. At a request from John McGennan to have all the tape cassettes containing hundreds of interviews and jottings for the book stored onto discs, Bill, without wavering or hesitation, agreed to do it. There were so many it must have taken a considerable amount of time. These discs are now stored in the Club and Bill, despite numerous approaches, refuses to take any form of payment.

At our 2001 AGM on behalf of the Membership, Bill Goodman presented Bill Sheridan with an appreciation plaque acknowledging his photographic excellence and continuous

support of the Collaroy Surf Club.

For 30 years, a selection of his photos was (and still is) made available to our secretaries and included in our annual Reports. Not once has he sought to have his name as a credit although in almost every annual Report the Club Secretary at the time has acknowledged Bill in them for his contribution of providing the majority of photos.

Since 1995, Bill has been listed in the Membership section of our Annual Reports as our Honorary Photographer – a position that he holds today. At the end of many seasons, Bill has provided photos, discs or USB sticks which contain a compilation and cross section of photographs taken of Collaroy members.

Bill has shown loyalty to our Surf Club. Any request or approach made by a member to Bill for a photo or two is complied with, and always appreciated by those fortunate enough to have been captured by his camera lens.

President’s Report

This season we continued the modernisation program that we have been engaged in over the past two years. The replacement of vital rescue equipment such as boards, tubes, resuscitation equipment and IRB motors and hulls continues annually. We ensure our members have the best available to them when on patrol. We were finallyable to hand back our latest (unfortunately withdrawn from service) IRB hull to National Council for a full refund ending a long saga of confusion over who was responsible for compensating Clubs who bought one of these “approved” boats. The Club had to operate with only two IRBs for the season but hope to take delivery of a third before the start of next season. We have rebuilt our website, which will enable more relevant information to be uploaded easily by Section Heads. This will give timely up to date information to our members, as well as give those visiting our site a more detailed and better understanding of what Collaroy SLSC is about. We launched another new surfboat, once again paid for by a group of loyal Collaroy sponsors and donors. Our Sponsors and Donors are our lifeblood and I ask you to support them where you can. Our Board and Ski area continues to grow with new equipment and participant numbers increasing. It is an exciting area to watch grow under the tutelage of long term Collaroy members, with many making their first foray intosurf competition and mixing it with the best of them. The Club premises continues to require maintenance and modernisation, a never-ending task overseen by our Premises Committee. We are responsible for everything inside the building and keeping it up to standard for members and those who hire the hall (another crucial area of revenue for the Club) is of the highest importance. Competition results are available within the report, and I would like to thank all those who dedicate their time and expertise to competing, coaching and managing our people and teams. No one is a paid coach at Collaroy and our results are a credit to the overall volunteering spirit. Our patrols, once again, have provided the swimming public who use Collaroy with the highest standard of Surf Life Saving skills and can only instill a sense of confidence inthose who come to enjoy our magnificent beach We need to continue our training of not only new surf lifesavers but also ensure our current members have the necessary awards to cover all requirements expected of us by Surf Life Saving australia and the public. To this end, we must run more courses; particularly for IRB drivers and crews. We are still desperately short in this area and we cannot continue to operate like this. The IRB is one of the most important pieces of rescue equipment we have and yet is the most under resourced when it comes to qualifiedpersonnel. We need to put into place a program where drivers and crew are trained as a matter of course as patrolling members. The season would not be the success it is without the dedication of many people but I would like to thank all those

on the Committee who have been of great support to me, and great leaders in many areas in the running of Collaroy SLSC. as has become the norm our competition areas all performed well with success across all sections at Branch, State and National level. I congratulate all members - Junior, Age, Open and Masters who represented Collaroy with distinction and pride.

Last year, at the Annual Northern Beaches Branch Awards Collaroy was awarded: 2nd place in the Most Outstanding Club category, 1st for Most Outstanding Club for Surf Sports and 1st for Most Outstanding Club for Youth and Member Development. a result we should all be very proud of. Our team for aussies travelled to the Sunshine Coast for the first time since 1980 with competition held at Mooloolaba,Alexandra Headland and Maroochydore beaches. It was fantastic to see the Red Cap prevalent at all events and in particular the water, where our paddlers from all age groups performed well. Our boat section remains strong and continues to grow and succeed under the guidance of experienced and dedicated leaders. Our Masters, Beach, R&R and March Past teams all brought home medals. Truly, we can all be proud of this touring team. In last year’s report, we did not include the outstanding performance of Ross Langbein at the World Surf Life Saving Championships held in France in September 2014. Ross won gold in the Masters Sprint and Flags. It was a fantastic effort at that level. I would also like to mention the contribution made to the Club by Kenyon McKie who stood down last year after more than 20 years on the g eneral Committee. Thank you from all of us at Collaroy for your service and ongoing dedication to all aspects of the Club. Luke Hochkins has retired after 12 years as Club Captain. His contribution to the Club during this time has been outstanding and he is an asset to the Club. He will be greatly missed in this role. However, he will continue to serve the Club and support our new Captain, the IRB Section and Nippers so Luke will still be around the Club often, and busier than ever. On behalf of the Committee and all the members thank you for your service.

As we are finishing the Annual Report, we have been hit by the huge storm that has done a lot of damage to the Club. Collaroy members were active on Monday sandbagging the Club, Tuesday night helping the police and SeS sandbagging at the end of Stuart Street. A great job by everyone who was there. Saturday morning saw a working bee at the Club, and with over 100 volunteers the Club was returned to its pre-storm condition, apart from damage to the roller doors and vergola. It makes me very proud of our membership and their ability to get in and help during this challenging time. We at Collaroy can be proud of our achievements this past season as we look forward and plan for another big summer next year. Greg Broome – President

Club Captain’s Report

Once again, we have reached the end of the season with no lives lost. Our members have completed a total of 5,494 hours on patrol this season. We have seen 12 rescues, 368 first aidincidents and 747 preventative actions; what a massive effort by our patrolling members!

Greg MacMahon is the recipient of the Dick Twight Pursuit of Excellence Award. Greg is also the coach and member of the Aussie Gold Medal winning Bears March Past Team and Patrol Captain of this year’s Patrol of the Year, Patrol 7.

This season g reg MacMahon stepped down from the Senior Club Vice-Captain role, which left a massive hole to fill.Thankfully, Liz Green stepped up into the role, and has done an amazing job. For this, I thank Liz for all her time and commitment. g reg is still around on patrol, and of course, he is always around to provide me with guidance for anything to do with patrols. His knowledge and commitment to the Club should be applauded and we as a Club should thank him for always covering Christmas Day.

With Liz moving up into the Senior Vice Captain role, we took the opportunity to reshuffle and reorganisethe Vice Captain roles. We have offered three more Vice Captain positions to join Ellie Law, welcoming on board Jesse Bowyer, Scott McMurdo and Lachie MacMahon. Over the season, we have rotated between the Vice Captains being on the beach, with Liz and I assisting them, and it has seemed to work well for the season. I would like to thank them for all their commitment over the season.

Our 100% patrolling members are Renee Bathie, Nina Bowyer, Kate Brouggy, Pat Canavan, Fiona Hall, Miho Kawasaki, Saxon Lysaght-Wheeler, Dave Perry (the younger), Adrian Pryke, Mav Scanlan, Stu Spencer and Justin Worthington.

Our top 10 patrolling members this year (total hours in brackets) are: Saxon Lysaght-Wheeler (113.8), g reg MacMahon (91.3), Stuart Spencer (67.3), David Perry (the younger) (54.5), Mav Scanlan (54.3), adrian Pryke (53.3), Tara Ellevsen (50), Pat Canavan (49.8), Chris Burchell (49.5), and Fiona Hall (48.5).

Patrol of the Year this year is patrol 7. It consists of Greg MacMahon (Captain), Lachlan MacMahon and Charlie Jormanainien (Vice Captains), Thomas Garland, Dylan

Garland, Kai Graham, Jack Toogood, Nicholas Simmons, Jackson Burns, Kate Brouggy, Jessica Hughan, Jakob Hammond and James Burns. This patrol was well attended, and very well run. The Vice Captains have mentioned how good this patrol is, so congratulations to g reg and his team.

Patrol Captain of the Year is Stu Spencer. Stu has led his patrol well, with a high retention rate and has taken on a number of extra patrols. Stu completed two patrols over the aussie weekend, and was on patrol during the State Titles.

Stu Spencer is the Bill Abbott Most Outstanding Patrol Captain.

Reid Barton Memorial Senior Patrol Members of the Year are Mav Scanlan and Craig Bathie. Mav is earning a reputation as a super sub, filling in where needed, including at carnivals andassessments; and Craig is regularly filling in for patrols whereneeded, and sometimes at short notice.

This year we have two Junior Patrollers of the year. Cameron Brown and Kate Brouggy have both shown themselves as wonderful patrolling members, and both have gone above and beyond on days when we have had major blue bottle stings.

I would once again like to extend my thanks to the super-subs that are always willing to assist our Club by filling patrols –g reg MacMahon, Paul Ducker, Mitchell Trim, Mav Scanlan, Liz Green, Andrew Sole, Phil Mickan, Craig Bathie and Saxon Lysaght-Wheeler.

Finally, this will be my last annual Report as Club Captain. a fter 12 years, and pretty much a whole generation go through the Club, it is time for a change, to have some new enthusiasm in the role, and to have someone look at the role from another angle.

I will be offering my services as a consultant to my successor, but it’s time now to spend some time with my family. I will still be around the Club, just not in the capacity that most of you are accustomed to.

Luke Hochkins - Club Captain.

Luke is the John Ison Memorial Most Outstanding Member

Liz Green is the Bill Goodman Most Outstanding Committee Member.

Nipper Report

Congratulations to everyone involved with the Nipper movement for the 2015-16 season. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with our tireless volunteers and the incredible group of kids who make up Collaroy Nippers.

The season started smoothly, without any interruptions from Mother Nature, and was again, greeted by some very excited, wary new Nippers. We also welcomed a number of new age Managers. a lex Keen, adam Vessey and Susan Rhodes in U6s, and Geoff Halpin in U7s who did a great job with the youngest members of Nippers. We also welcomed Ross and Carol Chaffer to the water section, helping the U9s in their firsttime on boards.

Our Nippers and volunteers did an excellent job representing Collaroy SLSC at local carnivals throughout the year. The Sydney Northern Beaches (SNB) moved away from publishing point scores this year due to the number of independent carnivals now on the calendar so there are no results to report.

Collaroy’s participation was strong, our Nippers always conducted themselves with pride, and our volunteers kicked in to help. We began at Newport, which ran very smoothly; followed by Queenscliff and Narrabeen. Branch was held at Palm Beach again, and the conditions were challenging to say the least. The event was split over two weekends in an attempt to manage any delays but many events were delayed or called off due to conditions and a massive amount of blue bottles that swarmed the events that did run. It was not nice to see so many of our Nippers and volunteers in the first aid room but Ihave to congratulate everyone involved. Collaroy finished in th place.

SNB continue to add extra carnivals outside of the four major carnivals including the Queenscliff Beach only, the Bennet Board and Manly Nipper Nats. This puts an extra load on water safety and the number of Official required. I would liketo thank everyone who has carried out these roles. It is a large commitment to volunteer, and the Club (and the kids) are very grateful. This will be an ongoing issue in the 2016-17 season and I encourage as many parents as possible to help volunteer and lighten the load.

Thankfully, our State Titles at Umina went very smoothly this year. The event was very well run; in fact, sometimes events ran so quickly we were questioning how it was possible. Our State Touring Manager, Kim Thomas with the help of many others onsite organised a great Friday night BBQ that saw everyone come together. It was a fun night and a great way to kick off the event. as usual, the kids did not disappoint and we saw some excellent accomplishments on the beach, in March Past and R&R and in the water. Collaroy finished anoutstanding 13th. Results are in the rear of this report. Thank you again to all of our trainers and volunteers who put in the hours in the lead up to State and during the event. as last year, Club Umina hosted our team function and all had a fun night. It is great to see so many parents and families involved in what is definitely a highlight of the Nipper social calenda .

The season also saw the relaunch of the Red Book. Thanks to the Sub-Committee who helped to make this possible. Changes will continue to ensure the book is as up to date as possible and the latest version can be found on the Club website in the Nippers Section.

Our Nippers and the rest of the Club looked fantastic in the new costumes introduced this season. Congratulations to Kim Thomas, Jan Lysaght-Wheeler and Kerry Barr. This project took a lot of time and effort, involving consultation with the entire Club.

I would like to thank Scott Bathie & Dave Coleman for their outstanding efforts over many years and turning the U14s into junior lifesavers. I wish them good luck in their transition to cadets.

Thank you to the committee for your time and dedication to the 2015-16 season.

Sadly, this season was the final for some of our long standingand most successful trainers. Our beach sprint coach, Michael Kember is looking forward to embarking on parenthood this coming season and we will miss his presence. Michael has volunteered an immeasurable amount of time to individuals and teams within Collaroy Nippers, resulting in many accomplishments on a personal and Club level. He has been an inspiration to us all and we wish him all the very best at an exciting time in his life.

For as long as most people in the Club can remember, Deb Trim and Annie Bullivant have coached the Nipper March Past team and achieved outstanding results. The March Past events have always been a highlight at local carnivals, Branch and State Titles. Deb and annie’s presence in Nippers has been hugely significant and it will simply not be the same withoutthem. We will miss you Deb and annie but look forward to seeing the Nippers continue the March Past tradition you led so well.

Last but not least, thank you to all of our age Managers. They are the reason Nippers is possible. Their hard work and dedication is not unnoticed. To you and your families, we thank you for all of your time and your approach to keeping kids involved in Nippers and Collaroy SLSC.

On behalf of the Nipper Committee, we look forward to seeing you next year.

Under 14’s – Scott Bathie and Dave Coleman

This years Under 14’s cohort.

Dave and I will genuinely miss being Age Managers to this fantastic group of young lifesavers. The U14s are a strongly bonded group, which is illustrated by many of the Nippers continuing together in winter sports teams. On the last day of Nippers when we talked to the group about this being their last day in the junior part of the Club, many were disappointed and asked if they could continue Nippers next year!

Highlights for the U14s would have to be their support for other Nipper age groups by completing water safety on a number of Sunday mornings and “age managing” younger age groups for a couple of Sundays. another highlight was a trip to Wet and Wild where our kids were responsible for supporting the Wet and Wild age Managers, then being let off the leash to roam the park and hit all the rides. The Wet and Wild coordinator said they were the best age group ever in the three years the program has been run at Wet and Wild.

At State, all the U14 girls that attended the carnival were involved in giving a speech. They did a great job and were given warm laughter and applause for their efforts. a total of 19 Nippers completed their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) from atotal of 22 Nippers registered which is a fantastic result and all these Nippers have already been patrolling our beach to keep people safe.

Finally, a huge thanks to all the U14 Nipper parents for your assistance and support. We hope you and your Nippers return to Collaroy next year.

Under 13’s – Craig Thomas

Brad and Brock take one on in the Board Rescue.

another season spent on the beach with a fantastic group of kids with sun, sand, water and the Collaroy weed!! Having fun, training hard, competing hard and forging friendships. For some, pre-season started at the end of June with winter board training, some tough paddling sessions on mostly sunny flatdays, which would all help as the season progressed.

All the SNB carnivals were very well supported with some good results on the beach and in the water even when the conditions were not always favourable. Maddy Wallace was again a standout on the beach and represented Collaroy and SNB Branch at the Interbranch Titles for the second year. We had a few of the girls step up to March Past and a new pairing in 2 Person R&R with much success.

On the few Sundays that we had for Nippers at Collaroy, we were able to cover the required sections for the SLSa Certificate. Some of the group were also lucky enough to attenda day of training during the January SRC/Bronze course where they completed some first aid training and worked on rescues, which they all enjoyed. We had some great competition through three rounds of Club Champs with both the boys and girls being keenly contested. The results were tight with Hannah g ilmartin and Brock Dose overall winners, well done.

Branch Champs at Palm Beach was again challenging as it was spread over two weekends, the surf was good but someone had invited the blue bottles and anything else that could sting the kids while racing and they didn’t miss!! This did not hold the kids back; we had some good results in the water, on the beach, R&R and March Past finishing with 3 gold and 4Silver.

Finally, the State Titles at Umina was the best of the four we have competed in. The weather was great, the surf reasonable, great kids, families and fun all topped off with some awesome results. There were many semi-finals and finals and sommedals won. More important than the results was the support, camaraderie and respect the kids had for each other and the other competitors right up to the final events on the Sundaymorning, doing the Red cap proud.

Overall, the season was a success for the U13s and Collaroy, none of which would be achieved without the efforts of the kids but more importantly the effort and time given by our fantastic Coaches across all disciplines. Thanks go to Ross and Carol, MK, Deb and Annie, Jake, Rayna, Jacqui and Paul and Nicole - apologies if I have missed anyone.

Thanks to those that have officiated, helped with water safetyor behind the scenes, your support is appreciated. I say it each year but it is a pleasure and I am lucky to be involved with a great group of kids. I look forward to watching this group mature and complete their SRC as they start the transition towards cadets, patrols and more led by Brad Fountain and Sophia Thomas as Jnr Club Captains.

Under 12’s – Stu Spencer

This season we had a core of just over 30 Nippers in the U12s. They all progressed well throughout the season and participated in all activities, often in challenging conditions.

As usual, our Club Championships were very close. I hope that some of our Nippers will have learnt that if your age Manager comes up to you and says “it would be a good idea if you went in this event” he has your best interests at heart.

The margin between first and second in both male and femalepoint scores was one point. It was pleasing to see Nippers who had been training through the winter in the water do so well when the scores were tallied.

Unfortunately, conditions at some carnivals during the season led to some water events being cancelled. For a change, we were blessed with great conditions for State and the whole age group participated well with some pleasing results. This year we also took part in R&R and March Past where we continued the proud tradition Collaroy has in these events.

Through the season, the group also learnt about the fundamentals of life saving by being introduced to DRSABCD. They demonstrated their enthusiasm by all wanting to take turns using a defibrillator made of cardboard and shoe laces

Thanks to Kristy for helping with the group over the past few seasons, all the parents who pitch in each week and help, our patrolling members (especially Patrol 4), the Nipper and Club Committee and everyone within our great Club.

Our U12 Beach Relay Team. Sienna, Esme, Isabella and Miah.

Under 11’s – Nathan Fountain

Season 2015-16 has come and gone in what seems a blink of the eye. This season we were blessed with incredible weather conditions and only a couple of days where seaweed or surf conditions caused any disruptions. as a result, we were in the water more often than previous years.

every Sunday morning it was great to watch the kids encourage each other and a highlight was the increase in the number of surf swim and board participants. This year also saw the kids attend a very successful first aid and resuscitationintroduction session led by g reg, with some standout knowledge displayed by them.

a huge thanks to Ross and Carol who ran the water training sessions and it was fantastic to see the number of U11 attend each week with commitment and dedication. It certainly

showed with the confidence and abilities the kids displayedin the water. I say Nippers is a lot about lifestyle, friendships and skills, rather than competition, but I certainly do have a competitive bunch in the U11s.

The wipeout of the year award was a close affair with both kids coming up smiling afterwards, displaying their comfort and confidence in the wate .

We had great attendances at the major carnivals with some great individual and team results. I wish I could mention them all but cannot go past Zara and the girl’s relay teams as well as Joey Lynch and his fellow relay teams. Branch at Palm Beach was a mixed affair with Bluebottles putting a real dampener on water events. State was again at Umina with, at last, perfect conditions. Not only am I proud of the results and efforts put in by the State competitors but by all who competed and trained throughout the year.

a massive thanks to Michael Kember at sprint training and to all the water safety volunteers on Sundays and at our mid-week training sessions; and to all the other age Managers. Thanks to adrian for all his help during the year and to all the parent helpers; it could not be done without you.

and lastly, a huge thanks to the kids: their attitude, behaviour, commitment and personalities... I have a wonderful group and I look forward to seeing you all next season.

Under 10’s – Vanessa and Will Wallace

It is hard to believe that another season of Nippers has come and gone. What a fabulous season we had. Time flies whenyou are having fun! We have had the pleasure of working with such a dynamic group of kids for the past 4 years and 2016 was no exception.

Over the season, we continued to watch our group develop more and more confidence in the water and on the boards. Itwas so good to see more of our group attempting to complete the long swim. We can only encourage you to do more swimming over winter. It is an asset that can save your life and you can do it for your whole life.

Many parents and kids wonder why the children cannot go on the board if they do not complete the ocean swim. It is very simple, if your child falls off or loses their board the only way back to the beach is to swim! We have a huge duty of care to fulfil. Please get the kids to swim more and attend boardtraining. Maybe you could attend swim squad and show them how it is done?

We cannot thank the wonderful parents from our group who step up repeatedly to help. Whether it is in the water, at board training, on the BBQ, setting up flags, judging sprints, helping with uniforms or officiating at carnivals. e cannot manage without you. We encourage you all to do your Bronze Medallion. It is run at the Club and it will be an inspiration to your children and an achievement for you. If being in the water is not your thing think about becoming an Official – it is easy;just ask us!

We attended carnivals at Narrabeen, Queenscliff, Newport as well as the Bennett Board, Branch at Palm Beach and State at Umina. There were many fabulous personal bests and teamwork, which we love to see. Some of our outstanding performances at Branch and State were: 3rd Boys Branch Relay (Kade, Daniel S, archie and a le); 3rd Girls Board: Elise; 2nd State Board Elise.

as a group, our water skills improved so much and this can be attributed to our wonderful water coaches who happen to be parents in our age group- Ross and Carol Chaffer. They have tirelessly given their time to help all the children in the Club. Their superior knowledge and skills in the water are second to none. a ll the other Clubs had better watch out as Collaroy is coming to get them in the water, especially those U11s in 2016-2017.

Once again Will and I have loved helping you all improve and look forward to another fun year in the U11s where we tackle new events such as the Ironman/woman and the Cameron relay. Congratulations to U10 Club Champs 2016 Kade and Freya!

See you all soon!

Under 9’s – Richard Tombs

What a fantastic year to be involved with such an enthusiastic group of children and parents. U9s is a transition year for our Nippers as they begin their life in the water. This is confronting for all but a few, and I am pleased to say the majority of the group were successful in making the transition and a few still are on the journey.

Carnival entrants were made up of a core of 8 boys and 4 girls. I would ideally like to double this next year so as all competitors can enter into the various relay events as they are the heart and soul and most enjoyable events at carnivals. The carnival attendees gained tremendous experience during the season that led to good results both in Club competition and at State Championships in Umina at the end of the season.

The highlight was the Boys Sprint Relay in which they secured a bronze medal and were very unfortunate not to at least medal in the board relay.

The Girls highlight was being finalist in both the Board andBeach sprint relays, missing a medal by just 1 position on the beach but showed they have the makings of a great team for both water and beach events.

as a way of wrapping up let me congratulate both Harvey Monnock and Katie Fountain on their achievement of best performing Nippers in the U9s age group. Both were pushed later in the season by some much improved and more confident Nippers. Both Harvey and Katie were also our bestperforming carnival Nippers making the finals in water events.

I was fortunate to have been granted the liberty of presenting an age Managers award and these were given for various reasons to our 2 recipients. Paige Walton received the g irls award for her persistence,

dedication and give it a go attitude. This was Paige’s firstyear in Nippers and took to both water events with gusto and attitude allowing her to become competent at both the ocean swim and the board events despite the conditions. She was a pleasure to coach with an infectious attitude. I look forward to seeing what she does in the coming couple of years; she is gutsy which will push her achievements to new levels quickly.

The Male manager award went to anton Ostryn. Strange choice some may think! anton showed the spirit you would want in any of our competitors. Despite his small frame he did not let it deter him from entering any event, particularly if it was going to benefit the team or Club. Anton was the only competitor to be at the beach at 7am ready for starts in 1km beach runs securing a 6th spot at Queenscliff. He attended all board trainings, which at times due to the nature of the sea was challenging for some of the older children and yet it did not deter him. Yes, he can test the patience in other areas however overall his heart is in the right place not just for himself but for the Club a trait I hold in high regard.Next season I will have Adam Monnock on hand as co-manager of our age group, I am sure those that know him will agree he will be an asset for our age group.

In closing, may I thank the parents who assisted me during the season; you know who you are. Your assistance helps run our mornings and carnivals without a hitch. I would like it if a few more would either get your bronze or officials certificate sas to spread the load on those that have it already, just think about it and get ready to act when the times comes …. please.

See you next summer

Under 8’s – Andrew Sole

This year was the first of two big steps for junior Nippers:competition at Intra-Club and Branch carnival surf sports events. Congratulations to you for successfully participating in your first year of surf competition, as individuals and in teamevents. Carnival performances were good for both the ladies and lads across the four Branch carnivals, with some valuable lessons learned along the way. The age awards also showed that you don’t have to win to come out on top. Congratulations to the winners and place getters for the age and competition awards.

The second big step was venturing into the surf beyond wading depth. It was great to be able to see the group conquer their trepidations about the surf, through board paddling and a short surf swim late in the season. Remember that you don’t have to be scared of the surf, but you do have to respect it.

a thank you, again, to the parents for getting the kids to each Sunday Nippers and to the carnivals. In addition, a big thanks for helping out in many ways – be it sticking a few flags in thesand on Sunday, helping marshal kids at events, water safety at Nippers and at carnivals, the Collaroy barbeque, coaching, officiating or general support.

To each of the lads and ladies in U8s, thanks for turning up each Sunday, for wanting to learn and try, keeping good humour and bringing some cheek. Thanks to the parents for bringing the same.

See you next year on the beach and in the surf.

What a season!

We started with over 50 boys and girls all keen to experience surf lifesaving as an educational experience for the first time.We had a lot of fun and the kids were keen to learn.

The improvement in their confidence over the year wasunbelievable. I have been an Age Manager for 9 years and these kids are showing a real love of the sport. It’s great to see most of the kids swimming in salt water without goggles! Some of the kids had little confidence in the water at the start of theseason and at the end we couldn’t get them out. We also have some good sprinters that shone and are just itching to compete, bring it on.

I would also like to thank the parents that chose to get involved; the kids get such a kick out of seeing mum or dad or both helping out.

See you in the sand next year.

Under 6’s – Adam Vesey

This was an amazing first season of Nippers

This was a great introduction to Nippers not only for myself; but also for Alex, Suzanne and the 60 plus new Nippers and their families who came to join the best surf lifesaving Club on the northern beaches.

We started out a little unsure of what to do but with some help and guidance along the way we managed to have a great season that was filled with fun, fitness, excitement and a lot onew skills learnt. To see how far the kids came from day 1 to the final day of Nippers has been a real testament to the e forts that the children and their families put into making this season so fantastic.

The most rewarding part of age Manager has been watching the children grow in confidence and ability in and around thebeach, watching them use the new found skills. To see kids that would not go in the water at the start of the season and by the end of the season watching them go under the waves and body surf waves into the beach has been amazing.

a big thank you to all of the parents who helped out through the season and got involved to make the kids feel safe and for supporting and encouraging not only their own child but everyone else’s children too.

See you next season. Beach Report

We had another great year on the beach, from our Masters competitors down to the U15s. A big thank you again to Michael Kember who continues to train the Juniors of our Club whilst maintaining his own training and very busy work life. You are a credit to our Club Michael, and we thank you.

In addition, a special thanks to Philippa for organising all our carnival entries for our competitors.

Desperately unlucky at Aussies, Philippa Wight takes Branch Silver. Philippa is also our Competition Director.

We showed great success at Branch this year with a ‘sea of red caps’ flooding Palm Beach picking up a swag of medalsfrom the Under 15s and up in individual events and relays as well (see results at back of report). We have so many great competitors not only getting results at Branch level, but also willing to ‘have a go’, and participate and just represent our great Club.

The State carnival was also well represented but due to the timing with most of the R&R competition, our numbers were a little down. There were some great results nevertheless. Mike had the run of his life, winning the Open Men’s Sprint, with Dean and Katie both 2nd place in their Open Flags. The Open Men’s took out the Beach Relay again. A great effort by Scott McMurdo who replaced e lliott Marynissen in the relay for the season, showing a clean pair of heels bringing the last leg home. Our Masters team had a great carnival with Ross Langbein and Louise Smallwood winning gold in both Sprint and Flags in their age groups, with Louise also winning the 1km beach run.

The Aussies was well represented by Nicholas Arico, Jesse Bowyer, Sam Marynissen, Nick Williams, Scott McMurdo, Mike Kember, Dean Scarff, Katie Williams, Fiona Hall, Kerry armstrong, Linda McDowell, Philippa Wight, Louise Smallwood and Ross Langbein. The Club is proud of you all for doing the best you can at what is the toughest surf carnival in the world. You all showed great sportsmanship, being humble in victory and gracious in defeat.

Collecting three Gold Medals at Aussies, Louise Smallwood is this year’s Masters Athelete of the Year.

There were some outstanding results again from Ross and Louise in the Masters, both winning the double (sprint and flags) with Louise picking up another gold medal in the 1kmrun. They are true champions of the beach. Kerry picked up a bronze in the sprint, which was well deserved as she is one of

the most disciplined competitors I have ever trained. Linda ran a tough race in the 2km run getting bronze and Dean picked up the bronze in the Open Sprint, with the Men placing 2nd in the Open Relay (Mike, Ross, Dean and Scott) to Currumbin in the final. This brings the Open Relay team medal tally at the last seven australian Championships to three gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal. A massive achievement.Congratulations to you all. I salute you!!!

Finally, Collaroy also had two members chosen in the SNB Interbranch 2015 team. Madeleine Wallace in the under 13s and Mike Kember in the Opens. Mike was also Men’s Captain of the team. Well done guys.

Golden couple Rachel Crerar and Michael Kember were co captains of this year’s SNB Interbranch Team. Michael won State Gold in the Sprint and was part of our Aussie Silver Medal Open Beach Relay Team.

It also gives me great pleasure in announcing Katie Williams and Dean Scarff the female and male beach competitors of the year award

Thanks again, and see you down the beach next season.

Craig WilliamsBeach Captain

Katie Williams is this year’s Most Outstanding Female Beach competitor.

Boat Rowers’ Annual Report

The Collaroy boaties continued to enjoy a marvellous ride of success and topped off the 2016 season on another high note.

We put eight (8) crews on the water during the season and whilst many of our crews are at different stages of development and experience; they all showed tremendous ability, camaraderie, competitiveness, humility and improvement throughout the season. More importantly, this fine group of menand women has well and truly restored respect in the ‘Mighty

Red Cap’ and all of our opposition know they’re in for a tough battle when they’ve drawn a race against a Collaroy crew.

With the 2016 season scheduled to be a month longer than the previous season most of our crews made the smart decision to start the season slowly and gradually built their form and training throughout the back half of the season.

Two of our aussie gold medal crews in 2015 made the big step up from their respective U23 divisions to Opens; these crews included the Knights (Open Men) and the g unners (Open Women). The Knights are our first homegrown Open Men s Crew in recent time and a crew that has progressed through the ranks from juniors, to colts and now open men. It is a great sign for the Club that we have so many good male and female rowers progressing through the ranks.

The Knights and Gunners also joined our incumbent Open Men’s Crew the g arricks and a young Open Women’s Crew that is on the rise, the Caballeros, in the semi-professional ‘Ocean Thunder’ surfboat series. Ocean Thunder is held over four rounds at Dee Why Beach and is arguably one of the toughest and most gruelling events on the calendar. If the top crews want to be competitive come aussies, they need to be competing in this series.

In the earlier rounds of competition, the Knights were showing great promise finishing in the top 5 after the rounds but didn’tquite make their maiden finals berth. The experience gained in 2016 will put the Knights and g unners in a great spot for next season. The g arricks’ lead the charge late in the series and finished rd in the final round of the series. A big thank you to all our non-competing rowers who helped out at Ocean Thunder, moved boats etc. and made the day that little bit easier for our competing rowers & sweeps.

The turning point of the season for the Collaroy boaties came in late January when every rower in the Club descended on Palm Beach sand dunes for a very solid workout with legendary trainer Rod Rowland-Smith aka the Sandhill Warrior. This almighty session galvanised the group and all crews, which showed in the Club’s dominant performance at Branch Titles a few weeks later on the same beach.

Men’s Open Boat “The Garricks” – Mark Anderson (s), Will Hosking, Sam Newsom, Alex Nicolson, Matthew Bealey.

The Garricks are this year’s recipient of the Fred Hopper Memorial Shield, Most Outstanding Team in Competition.

The g arricks had a slow start to the season, which was not by choice but seemed to work in their favour. This was clearly evident with numerous high quality performances in the back half of the season. The g arricks’ continued to set the standard for all of our crews, and they are a crew that we all look up to.

Page 17: COLLAROY SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB · 2016-07-26 · Norm Chaffer, Ray Isaacs, Steve green, Karen McKie Competitors’ Support Committee: geoff Small (Chairman), Gregg Armstrong, Greg

Page 17

The g arrick’s commitment to training and racing was without question and this showed in their results; SNB Branch Titles – 1st Open Boat, State Titles 4th Open Boat and the big one 4th Australian Open boat. It was the first time in 16 years thatCollaroy had a crew in the Open Men’s boat final. The Garricks had a great Aussie’s campaign and did nothing wrong. I have great confidence that they can knock o f the big one and bring home that long awaited aussie gold medal. another great season, well done!

Open Men’s Boat ‘Knights’ – Gavin Scott (s), Angus Hoy, Sam Nicholas, Shane Freeman, Jason ‘Watto’ Pearce.

After claiming an U23 Aussie gold medal in the previous season, the Knights made the decision to step things up and compete in the Open Men’s division. Their training and preparation early in the season was impressive and things were looking good in their maiden year in the top division. Their Ocean Thunder performance was also impressive claiming consistent top 5 finishes after the rounds. The Knights may consider themselves a little unlucky in not progressing through to a finals berth. The back half of the season proved to be disruptive and inconsistent by their own standards. The Knights have shown that they have the ability to mix it with the best but need to stay focused to ensure ultimate success.

Open Women’s Boat ‘Gunners’ – Mark Anderson (s), Abbey Jones, Georgie Rowe, Aimee Gundry, Sarah McRitchie.

The g unners were also another one of our crews stepping up to row in the Open Women’s division after claiming an U23 aussie gold medal in 2015. The g unners had a wobbly start to the season but with tremendous determination and self-belief they were able to put together a very good season and achieve some great results. These included; 1st SNB Branch Titles, 4th State Titles and a top 16 finish at the Aussie Titles. The growth and development displayed by the g unners has been truly amazing to witness. They can consider themselves a little unlucky not to have progressed further at the aussie Titles but should have every confidence that their attitude will take them along way in this sport.

Open Women’s Boat ‘Caballeros’ – Gavin Scott (s), Georgia Dirkis, Laura Connell, emily Deegan, and emily g eorge.

The Caballeros were predominantly made up of U23 rowers that took the plunge and decided to try their luck rowing in the Open division. This crew has many very good rowers with tremendous talent and ability but rowing Opens is not for the faint hearted. The Caballeros trained hard during the season and showed good improvement. This crew will benefit a lot fromrowing in the Open division and the experience gained should launch them into big-and-better things next season. Caballeros made the finals at Bilgola, Mollymook and Freshwater carnivals.

Reserve Boat ‘Spiders’ – David Hopper (s), Brendan Dunkin, Michael Parkes, Michael Currie, Daniel Paavola.

The Spiders dusted off the cobwebs during the off-season and with Michael Parkes, joining the crew the scene was set for a promising season. The old boys trained consistently throughout the season and started to show good progress and momentum including making finals at Queenscli f and finishing th at the Branch Titles. Sadly, a serious injury to Dunks brought our season to a premature end.

Reserve Boat ‘Wounded Buffaloes’ – Richard Meadmore (s), Rob Maloney, Chris Burchell, Maverick Scanlon, Justin Worthington.

The Wounded Buffaloes kicked off the season in good form

following a solid off-season and welcomed new recruit Justin Worthington to the world of surfboat rowing. This crew showed some impressive early season form making the final atWarriewood and late in the season at Freshwater and North Curly. The guys got themselves into a hole mid-way through the season but through perseverance worked hard to gain some form and we started to see some of glimpses of their potential at aussies. a crew to watch in 2017.

Women’s U23 Boat ‘Cab Savs’ – Gavin Scott (s), Ellie Law, Emma Fessey, Bella Hampton, Rosie Beasley, Jodie Trim.

The CabSavs representing Tasmania at this year’s Interstate Series.

The Cab Savs had a stellar season and held the flag highfor the Red Caps. The Cab Savs were a very dominant and consistent crew throughout the entire season which included; 1st aSRL, 1st Young g uns, 1st North Curl Curl, 1st Mollymook, 1st Queenscliff, 2nd SNB Branch Titles, 3rd NSW State Titles and 4th aussies Titles. Their 4th place row at the aussies Titles was one of the most impressive rows witnessed at the Titles. The girls were hit at the start and rowed right back into contention. It was a truly gutsy effort. Well done on a great season.

U19 Junior Boat – ‘Fatties & Skinnies’ – Mark Reece (s), Bailey Dwyer, Tyler Stowe, Zak Crowe, Jeremy Ord, Oscar Hall. The Fatties & Skinnies welcomed a number of new rowers to Collaroy and the sport. The boys trained hard and showed genuine signs of improvement throughout the season but due to some disruptive moments during the season lost a little bit of momentum. The season provided the new rowers with invaluable experience and the guys are well placed to achieve good things next season. Season highlights include 3rd place at the SNB Branch Titles and making the finals at Pacific Palm

Boat ChristeningOn Sunday 20th December 2015, we christened the latest addition to our fleet, the ‘Steve Scott’. Steve has been anenormous contributor to the success of Collaroy boat crews over the years and his legacy stands firm to this very da . It was a very proud moment for all past and present boaties to acknowledge Steve’s contribution.

We would also like to thank all of our sponsors for making this happen and without your support, we would not have a chance of succeeding. Special thanks to the following sponsors; The Beach Club Collaroy, Wage Cover, Landscape Solutions, The Flying Herrons, Raine & Horne Collaroy, Kaipara Property g roup and Lowick Farm.

Young Guns Boat CarnivalWe hosted the 8th Annual International Young Guns surf-boat bonanza in early January and again, it proved to be a very popular event amongst the up-and-coming stars of our sport.

The Young Guns event is a major fundraiser for the boaties and over 60 crews from Clubs all over the east coast of australia contested this event. Whilst we are witnessing a slight decline in participation rates across the board this event proves to be very popular amongst junior rowers and a vital fixture on therowing calendar.

I would like to thank the Collaroy Beach Services Club for all of their continued support of this event. Without their support, this event wouldn’t happen! Special thanks also to g av Scott (event organizer), Will Hosking, Greg McMahon, every rower that helped on the day and our Committee for all of their help and support.

Our U23’s Womens Crew win Young Guns.

Frank Hall Memorial Rower of the Year The Frank Hall Memorial Rower of the Year is awarded to a rower that has excelled amongst their peers. It is not only awarded to a quality oarsman or oarswomen but to a rower that has displayed qualities beyond their years; commitment to their crew, contribution to the Club overall, patrol attendance, obtaining new awards, participating in Club events, training etc. Sometimes, it can be a quiet achiever that just goes about their business with little or no fanfare.

Will Hosking is an obvious standout and proud winner of this prestigious award.

Will Hosking

Stan Twight Rower’s Encouragement Award The Stan Twight Rower’s encouragement award is typically awarded to a younger rower that has not only showed promise and improvement throughout the season but has also contributed to the boat section beyond their years.

Bella Hampton has developed into a very good rower and she should be very proud of her achievements.

Paul Booth Boat Crew of the Year - This is awarded on a point score system to the crew that has been the most consistent in competition throughout the season and amassed the most points. The Cab Savs were consistent performers throughout the season and clear winners of this highly regarded award.Season 2015-16 will be remembered as another successful season for the Collaroy boaties. It has been an absolute pleasure to be associated with such a fine group of menand women. We should be very proud of the success and achievements made throughout the season. I wish you all a well-earned break and look forward to a backing up for another crack in 2017.

A special thank you to Zacca Watts (Technical Guru and Mentor) for all your help and support in coaching our younger rowers. Our crews don’t consistently grow and develop, make finals and taste success without having a rock solid supportbase – Zacca Watts is one person behind the scenes that continues to give a considerable contribution in the boat section.

In conclusion, I would like to thank the Club Executive and Committee for their continued support of the Boat Section and our Management team; Mark anderson, g avin Scott and Mark Reece for all their hard work and efforts throughout the season.

R&R Report

Collaroy had a very successful season this year across all age groups in R&R. With the de Kort’s travelling through asia for most of January it was a later start to the season for the seniors. All teams performed amazingly well throughout the season and we came away with awesome results including the Point Score at State.

This season saw the passing of Paul “Porky” Edwards on the 3rd March 2016, just before the State Titles. At both the State and australian Titles a minutes silence was observed. With a large contingent of the R&R section attending the Hospital in his final days he was presented with the reel that was namedin his honour. Condolences to Leonie, Belinda, Nicole and Brad on their loss, and we are all devastated in losing a true “Supercoach” and legend who will be sorely missed and never forgotten by the R&R section.

We would like to thank the Macintosh Foundation for the new reel. It is an amazing reel named in honour of an amazing man.

2 Man Teams

U13Kai and Hayden – Jake de Kort

Lots of hard effort and training developed these young competitors into a really strong team that did well this year in the carnivals early in the season and a very commendable effort in getting gold at Branch. They continued their committed

training and gained more confidence in both positions andbecame driven to go well at State.

After qualifying into the State finals in second place they werestrong contenders and after their best run-through over three seasons they came away with the gold on an incredible State final record of 1 point! Congratulations Kai and Hayden on afantastic season and a big thanks to Rayna for helping coach the boys early in the season whilst Jake was travelling. The Club can’t wait to see what you bring to the R&R arena next year!

Two Person R&R: Mia Glasson, Alana de Kort, Kai Shimakage and Hayden Brannon

U14Alana and Mia – Paul de Kort

This was Mia’s first season of R&R and she did an excellent jobin learning the event in such a short time. The girls had about 5 weeks of solid training before the State Titles and they gelled immediately. Alana and Mia both performed well at Branch with a 2nd place and did an amazing job at State winning a silver medal on a count back to the Red team with an impressive low score of 1 point. a fantastic achievement considering their limited training.

Nippers 5 Man TeamsKai, Tyson, Lara, Taylor and Hayden (all new to R&R) – Nicole Bridges and Lara

The newest of the Collaroy 5 man teams started their season a little later than most. a ll of them were new to 5 man. We started with the basics, learning to march and carry the reel and then onto the harder stuff, payouts and resuscitation. These people have all been a pleasure to coach and all showed a willingness to learn. every training session they were committed to improving their skills and it paid off when they competed in their very first carnival, which happened to be the State Titles. They finished the season with an impressive th place at State and they improved on their second run through by taking off 5 points. With an earlier start to the season and a few more training sessions, I am very excited to see what next season brings for this team. Congratulations to all on a great firstseason.

U14 Sophie, Lara, Emma, Renee and Jordan – Jacqui de Kort

The girls had a great season this year competing in both the U14 and the U15s. In the U14s they competed at both the Branch and State Titles and came away with a gold at Branch and a silver at the State Titles.

In the U15s they were competing up an age group. They didn’t compete at the aussies this season however they did compete at Branch and State. At Branch they came 2nd, and at State they came 4th. Amazing results in both age groups. The girls are coming along nicely and will be a real threat next season.

U17 Tara, Abbey, Georgia, Nicholas and Jackson – Jake de Kort and Jesse Bowyer

after some upsetting results last year at aussies this team was determined to show everyone how well they can go. The team had a solid start to their season at Branch getting gold in both the U17s and U19s event. At State, the team successfully made it into both the U17s and U19s finals however after asolid run though they had to settle for bronze in the U17s and 4th in the U19s. Despite these upsetting results, they trained well for aussies and really developed into a strong team before the Saturday of competition. In the heats, they produced two amazing run throughs and qualified into the final for both U17and U19s in 1st and 2nd respectively.

After hearing that the other U17s and U19s teams did not make it into the final, the team was quite upset for them but reallywanted to prove that Collaroy was the best. The team worked outstandingly well together in both run throughs, and a massive congratulations to Tara for two incredible swims, beating all the competition in the U19s swim.

When the results were finally released, they were absolutelyelated that they were the Australian Champions in U17s and came a commendable 3rd in the U19s. Congratulations on your successful season, your coaches and the entire Club are so proud of not only how well you competed this season, but also the commitment, resilience, incredible sportsmanship and team spirit you displayed throughout the whole season. The Club looks forward to seeing what you can deliver next season.

U17 Red TeamRayna, Khali, Christian, Nina and Ebony – Jacqui de Kort

This season saw this team compete in the water for the firsttime and they had a few changes in positions. They did not have a run through at Branch however, they competed at both the State and Aussie Titles. At State, they finished with a th place and they just missed out on the final at Aussies. Each run through they improved and they came away with their best score at Aussies. I am very excited to see how they will go next season.

Page 20

U19Jake, Jesse, Annabelle, Millie and Brianna – Paul de Kort

This team had a great season competing in both U19s and Open Mixed competition. Although the season did not finishhow they would have liked in the U19s, they should be very proud of their overall results. Branch was the first carnival forthe season and also the return of Jake who had been travelling around asia for 3 months. a t the State Titles they performed outstandingly well, and won the gold medal in the U19s and a silver medal in the Open Mixed.

at aussies they were devastated that they missed out on the final in the U19 however they brushed it o f and made it into the final for the open mixed and won a bronze medal. They were competing against teams that were older and more experienced and it was amazing effort. A force to be reckoned with in the Open Mixed next season.

Open Women’s Millie, Brianna, Brooke, Steff and Nicole – Paul de Kort

The Open Women’s’ team had a great season this year considering the first carnival was Branch. Ste f gave birth in September (at the beginning of the season) to little (not so little) Lucas. At Branch they came 2nd. They put in as many training sessions as they could before State, and an awesome swim by Brooke paid off with a gold medal.

This is the 1st gold medal that Collaroy has ever won in the Open Women’s. At Aussies, Brooke once again had an awesome swim and the girls came away with a bronze. Both Millie and Brianna backed up after competing in U19s and Mixed. Brooke absolutely smashed the swims at both State and aussies. Really looking forward to seeing how these girls go next season.

Open 6 ManJake, Jesse, Millie, Briana, Brooke and Nicole – Paul de Kort

The Open 6 man had some changes with both adam and Todd Ware not available. It was a mixture of the Open Women’s and the U19s. They really pushed the more experienced teams this year and did an excellent job getting a 3rd at State and a 4th at aussies. They are only going to get better and it is exciting to see how they will go next year with another season under their belt.

A special mention to Jake and Jesse for coaching an Australian Champion Team at such a young age. Coaches can take many years to win an aussie title or never win at all and these two guys have done it twice, both while still in the U19s. No doubt, the Club is in good hands for the future.

R&R person of the year goes to Tara Bowyer who performed admirably in the belt, especially her gutsy swim at the aussies winning the U19s swim against her male counterparts. It was a pleasure to be there and witness such a great swim. She juggled her Board and Ski training and events to fit in withher R&R responsibilities as well. No doubt her commitment to swimming training during the cold winter mornings and all through summer certainly paid off and she is a very deserved winner of this award. R&R Team of the Year goes to U17s Collaroy White (Jackson Arico, Nicholas Arico, Abbey Baker, Georgia Bathie and Tara Bowyer) who became Australian Champions in the U17s and bronze in the U19s event. A fantastic achievement and truly well deserved.

Lastly, I would like to thank Paul and Jacqui de Kort for everything they do for R&R in the Club. They give up so much of their time to coach the teams and the results show how truly amazing they are. Thank you and I am looking forward to next season

Board and Ski Report

as usual, the season kicks off for the board & ski team in the cold, dark mornings of winter in the harbour or at the Roy.

Last year, a lot of focus was on getting numbers on skis, this year, whilst maintaining the momentum in the ski area, we wanted to put a lot of effort into getting a board session off the ground. Shane armstrong and Matt g ittoes took time out of their Sunday mornings putting the young U15s / U17s through their paces. It was great to see one of them, Sally Ferguson, competing at numerous carnivals throughout the season. It’s something we want to continue to build on over the next couple of years.

Competition for us began in the New Year with the Queenscliff, Manly and Freshwater carnivals dominating the month of January. There were some good results and racing which showed that training in the cold winter mornings had paid off.

The Branch Titles, held at Palm Beach, provided a great launch into the business end of the season. The under 17s and U19s entered every event possible, starting out with the 2km soft sand run, with Finn O’Shea coming home with a gold in the U17 event. Jakob Hammond dominated the U17 craft races, leading to the beach just about every event he entered, including the U17 ski final. He even knocked o f the Collaroy ‘old boys’ in the open men’s ski final, finishing a verrespectable 5th. Charlie Jormanainen also paddled well to place 3rd in the U19 single ski. In the women, Bella Charlesworth became the first women since Lauren Armstrong (nee McKie)

Page 21: COLLAROY SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB · 2016-07-26 · Norm Chaffer, Ray Isaacs, Steve green, Karen McKie Competitors’ Support Committee: geoff Small (Chairman), Gregg Armstrong, Greg

Page 21

to compete in the Ironwoman event for Collaroy. Bella was a new addition to the B&S section this season and was very dedicated to her training. Bella, along with Tara Bowyer, rarely missed a training session and the results began to show as the season progressed with all the hard work they had put in.

The State Titles held at Umina beach, provided long flatconditions that seemed to favour our younger Collaroy competitors. The U17s men’s ski relay consisting of Jakob, Finn, and Angus took silver early on the first day in a closelyfought contest. Jakob and Angus’s flat-water backgroundproved vital on the way back to the beach and Finn’s dedication and commitment to training, where he has displayed a dramatic improvement throughout the season, paid off with a sensational paddle, mixing it with the best paddlers in the U17 age group. A well deserved result for the boys.

Jakob and Angus, K2 partners in the kayaks, decided to give the U19s double ski a crack, as there is no U17 double ski event. Not only did they give it a crack, the pair paddled so well, they took out the bronze medal, both as 16 year olds. It was an amazing effort from these two! Jakob also made the finalof the U17 single ski event. Jakob paddled well all weekend, dominating all of the ski races he participated in. Once again, in the final Jakob shot to the lead around the cans and tookoff, leaving the rest of the paddlers in his wake. Unfortunately, surf can be cruel and Jakob, some 20-30m in front, was being mowed down by 6 other competitors on a rogue wave while he paddled out in front with nothing but flat water around him.Jakob got swamped by the other competitors’ right on the line, and unfortunately missed out on any medal. It is a harsh way to finish a race but Jakob took the defeat graciously and will bebetter for it.

The girls also performed strongly over the weekend. Bella made the U19 Ironwoman final; Hannah made the U19 skifinal and the open mixed double ski final with myself. Both girlteamed up with Tara, who was running from one end of the beach to compete in R&R, to the other to compete in the B&S events, to perform strongly in the U19s ski relay final. Another notable performance over the weekend was from Dylan g arland. Dylan raced the best we had seen him on the ski and showed that his commitment to training has been valuable.

Bella Charlesworth is this year’s Most Improved U19 Member.

The Sunshine Coast was the location for aussies this year, with the board and ski events situated at Maroochydore Beach. The surf brought back memories of the Kurrawa days, with messy conditions and a long break. Because of the conditions, there was a mixed bag of results. Hannah, Bella and Tara made the final of the U19 women s ski relay. An amazing achievement for the girls, as two of them (Bella and Tara) only began paddling a ski this year. Jakob, Angus and Thomas also made the finalof the U19 men’s ski relay final. Thomas has been training and paddling well all season, rarely missing a session, and it

was great to see that his commitment resulted in a final at theaustralian Titles. One of the most exciting races of the week was the U17 ski relay final, where Jakob, Angus and Finn finished a veryrespectable 5th place. Reece, Matt and I noticed something clicked with angus in the month leading up to aussies, particularly in his relay paddles. every relay paddle he competed in, he kept exceeding everyone’s expectations, making up more places than anyone would have thought possible, particularly on the way back in to shore. angus came home strongly in the relay final, and he got them into a sprintfinish for rd place. It was a great race and result by the 3 boys, who were amongst the U17s best paddlers.

In the individual events, both Hannah and Angus made the semi-finals in their respective single ski events and Jakob andAngus teamed up to make the semis in the U19s double ski. Bella also finished strongly in the U19 women s swim final butthe standout performance of the week was definitely Jakob inthe U17 single ski final. Jakob came down the lead wave onthe way in to the beach and was paddling for the gold medal. Unfortunately, there was a strong sweep which pushed him (and a few other competitors) north of the finish line, whichmeant Jakob got jammed up with those competitors around him and just missed out on a medal. It was a sensational paddle by Jakob and something he should be very proud of. Jakob has had an outstanding season this year, dominating most U17 ski races he entered. Not only did Jakob excel in his own category, he was also part of the open ski relay with Matt and me for most of the season, participating in the Open age group.

For these reasons, we have selected Jakob for the Paynter Dixon Most Outstanding Board and Ski Award for the 2015-16 season. Congratulations Jakob!

Jakob Hammond is the Mick Chapman Most Outstanding U17 Member.

With plenty of great results this season, Reece Bosward again needs to take a lot of the credit for the numerous hours he spends on the beach and in the water, developing and honing our young teams’ skills. Reece has done an amazing job with the team in this role over the last few years. They have now become a tightly knitted crew. Thank you to Reece who also towed all the gear up to State and aussies, and thank you to Kenny g (and Mandy) for bringing the trailer home.

I would also like to thank Greg Broome and the Committee for their continued support throughout the season and any other Club member who have assisted our team throughout the year.

Congratulations to all members of the Board and Ski team! It’s been an exciting season for our section and I am looking forward to what’s in store next season.

March Past Captain’s Report

The 2015-16 season was an outstanding one for the Collaroy Club with our four teams winning every Title for which they competed. The JAB U14 team, coached by Anne Bullivant and Debra Trim won the Branch/State double for the fifthconsecutive season. a lthough they only entered the one carnival, the U23 team also won their fifth consecutiveaustralian Title. Our Ladies team, coached by Paul de Kort regained the Branch and State Titles with the Bears runners up on both occasions. Finally, after a drought of eleven years the JJ Lawson sponsored Bears, coached by Greg MacMahon, won the australian Open March Past Title.

Bears March Past Report

Team Members – Neil Armstrong, Tony Aouad, Martin Bowyer, Greg Broome, Paul Ducker, Greg Falk, Ron Levy, Tim Loone, Kenyon McKie, Dave Macintosh aM, Peter MacMahon, Barry Muncke, Col Newman, Craig Williams. Coach – Greg MacMahon.

Coach g reg MacMahon called a team meeting in November to discuss plans for the season ahead and to see who was available. Tim Loone had just had an operation to straighten the toes on one foot and I was going to hospital the next day to have a tendon repaired on my left foot. With Bill Marynissen also unavailable and Greg Broome away for long periods due to work commitments, our ranks were a little thin meaning that the Coach would have to make up the numbers. With the australian Titles not until april 24th 2016 and the first carnivalat Queenscliff on January 16th, it was pointless for a team as experienced in March Past as The Bears to train without a full complement of members.

The first training session was held on the Tuesday before the Queenscliff carnival and even then, there were not enough members present for the team to practice wheeling. With just the bare 12 available, the guys went on to win both the Queenscliff and Manly carnivals, the latter with the loss of only one point. The next two carnivals showed just how thin our ranks were. a t Freshwater, g reg MacMahon had to call on the services of Richard Trim for a handle position and Michael Kember in the back line with the Bears only managing 5th place. The following week on our own beach at east Coast Masters it got even worse with the Bears marching with an incomplete team and therefore not being judged. A fortnight later at Palm Beach and despite having everyone available except Broomie, the Collaroy Ladies narrowly defeated the Bears by 1 point regaining both the Branch Title and the Premiership Shield.

The State Titles were again held at Umina, the last of a four-year stint for this area with next year’s event back at Swansea Belmont. The tide was low resulting in a dry, even beach although it was difficult for the teams entering the arena topick up the beat from the pipe band. a fter about a half hour the result was out with the Collaroy Ladies 1st on a count back breaking a long drought of State wins, Collaroy Bears 2nd even though they again had the lowest total points, and last year’s winners Burning Palms 3rd.

For the first time since 1980, the Australian Titles returned to the Sunshine Coast with the March Past being held on Maroochydore Beach. For the coach, training was a little difficult to organise as some team members were staying as faraway as Caloundra. With very few training sessions since State it was important to get as much done so as the boys were in the best state of mind. a fter all, the last time we competed on this beach the Club stayed at Caloundra and we won the March Past. as usual the march was held early Sunday morning and it was a nail biting time waiting for the result. g reg MacMahon and some of the team decided to move to Maroochydore Clubhouse for brekkie rather than wait on the beach.

g reg then received a phone call from g ary Cook asking him to come down to the administration tent. The result was out. 1st Collaroy Bears 1pt (4 total pts), 2nd a lexandra Headlands 2pts (10 total pts), and 3rd Nth Cronulla 2.01pts (8 total pts) which again supports the fact that the team with the lowest points lost should always be the winner.

Finally, thanks to Greg MacMahon for taking on the difficultrole of Coach as well as filling a number of positions during theseason. Thanks also to Jim Lawson of JJ Lawson Customs and Forwarding Agents for his ongoing financial support.

Congratulations to the Ladies team and their Coach Paul de Kort for another successful season, stick with it. It has been a frustrating 25 years lamenting the Titles Collaroy’s Men’s and Ladies teams would have won had we not had middle marking at Championship events. I look back to the comments I made in the final paragraph of last yea ’s report. The rest is history.

Ladies March Past Report

The Collaroy Ladies win State gold at Umina, and were Branch Champions.

as another season comes and goes, the Ladies will probably look back at this one as being successful, but they didn’t quite reach their ultimate goal. It was a fun, social and yet competitive season where they enjoyed some great successes, and made sure they enjoyed themselves in the process. The team usually organises a weekend away at the start of each season but this year they set the bar high with a 4 night cruise on the Pacific Jewel where many cocktails and bottles ofchampagne were consumed. everyone had a great time and enjoyed some rest and relaxation. We were part of an historic occasion with 5 cruise ships all sailing into Sydney Harbour at the same time to commemorate the maiden voyage of two new P&O ships. Thanks to Nicole Bridges for organising the cruise and making sure everything went smoothly. The Ladies competed at the Queenscliff, Manly, Freshwater and east Coast Masters carnivals without their normal team and were lucky to have reliable substitutes with Millie Suters, Steph Doney and Brooke Perry filling in admirabl . They still came away with some good results thanks to John Fahey who assisted me with coaching duties whilst I was overseas. It wasn’t until February when we had our full team back on board and we got stuck into some serious training for the upcoming Titles. The Branch Titles at Palm Beach started to see things come together with the Ladies winning the gold medal and becoming Branch Champions. The State Titles came around quickly and they were training really well leading up to it. Once again, everything came together for us and the Ladies were crowned State Champions after another great performance. In the lead up to Aussies, we went into a bit of a slump for a couple of weeks at training but fortunately started to improve prior to leaving Sydney. We were able to fit in a few trainingsessions at Maroochydore working around R&R commitments and all seemed good leading up to Sunday’s final. With 5 teamsfinishing on 2 points ( nd to 6th), we had a chance of medalling but unfortunately for us, our wheeling let us down in the finaland we had to settle for 6th position after the ‘countback’. even though the result was disappointing for us, it was great to see the Bears were able to get Collaroy on top of the dais and come away with the gold medal. It was a fantastic result for the Bears and truly well deserved after all the near misses in previous aussies. One day the Ladies will hopefully get to enjoy that feeling for themselves. I truly hope this will be sooner rather than later.

The results at Titles for both the Bears and the Ladies really shows what great depth and talent we have in the March Past event where between the two teams we were crowned Branch, State and Australian Champions along with the U23’s doing their usual thing and winning the aussies with barely any training. No doubt their R&R training certainly contributed to this success. Finally I would like to thank John Fahey for his support and assistance throughout the year which is always welcomed by myself and the team. Although it was not the finish we hadhoped for, the Ladies still had a terrific season and shouldbe very proud of themselves with all of their achievements. I suppose it now means we will most likely go around again for another season and hopefully with a little bit of luck, things might turn out in our favour at aussies. Paul de KortLadies Coach

Under 14 March Past Team

The Collaroy Nipper March Past Team is a team of dedicated U11 to U14 marchers.

This year our team members were emma Cherry, Sophie Coleman, erin g aw, Hannah g ilmartin, Mia g lasson, Chloe Herriot, Yasmin Kipa, Alana de Kort, Jordan McMahon, Frankie Webster, Kai Shimakage and Sophia Thomas. They were

keen, focused and a great group of Nippers. They trained every Sunday morning, before Nippers commenced and competed at all carnivals. Over the Christmas break, we had 2 Nippers fill in when families were awa , and they were Emma Spencer and Mia Ingram. They did a great job and hopefully will join the team next year.

Once again, the Collaroy team did not disappoint and won every carnival they entered. The team was once again VeRY successful at the state championships and claimed the State Title. Thank you to all the parents who bring the Marchies to training each week and early to all carnivals.

The recipient of the Lawrie Mcg aw March Past award this year goes to Jordan MacMahon who has been marching with us for 4 years and was dedicated, focussed and a great marcher. Well done Jordan.

Sadly, this will be our last year of coaching. We have coached for 11 years and have been lucky enough to gain 8 gold medals and 3 silver medals at NSW State carnivals. We have loved every aspect of coaching... and love the fact that we have met so many Nippers and have watched them all grow up into fantastic friendly young adults.

Don’t worry, our March Past team will be in good hands next season and we will be happy to assist at any time.

End Of An Era

Deb Trim (left) and Annie Bullivant (right)

On Sunday, March 6th 2016 at the recent N.S.W. Junior (Nipper) State Championships at Umina Beach on the Central Coast, Debra Trim and Anne Bullivant announced their retirement from this section of the Club, just as their team won ‘another’ gold medal.

I do not use the word ‘another’ flippantly as Debra and Anne have been coaching the Collaroy Junior March Past Team for eleven years, commencing in 2005.

During that time, our Collaroy youngsters have marched their way to nine gold medals and three silver medals at the NSW State Championships. Records show that during that time, at least sixty Collaroy youngsters have won a minimum of one gold medal (some several), and six a silver medal.

I have no doubt that since our Club’s formation in 1911; this is by far the greatest coaching feat in the Club’s 105 year history.

We have had, and still do have some outstanding coaches, but I am confident to say none would equal or better Debraand anne’s success. each year these two have turned an ever changing group of enthusiastic youngsters into a well-disciplined team – one that is unrivalled in the State, having just won their fifth gold medal in a row

The same success in medal tally was reciprocated at our local Sydney Northern Beaches Branch Championships, where only in 2010 was gold evasive at Branch or State.

For the past nine years Debra and anne either have coached or were part of the coaching team for the Clubs U17 and U23 March Past Teams; and 2016 saw their third successive gold medal for the U23 team at the Australian Championships.

Both ladies remain as founding members of the re-established Ladies March Past Team, formed in 2002-2003 season and the first since 1946-1947 (when a team of ladies whichincluded Dot Montgomery won the then NSW State March Past Championship at the Sydney Sports g round). For fourteen consecutive years they have consistently medaled at our Branch, NSW State and Australian Championships. They are the current Branch and N.S.W. State Champions and have medaled at three Australian Championships in the last fiveyears.

More importantly though, these ladies have enabled 180 youngsters who may not be the fastest on the sand nor through the water or even our best board paddlers; but who have responded to the discipline required to master this technical event with so much success. As a whole that influencecontinues to have a positive ongoing legacy for our Surf Club, as their involvement transitions from cadets to senior members.

away from coaching, both ladies are active within the social strata of the Club, as RSA certificate holders when requiredassisting with bar duties, always volunteering to assist at Club events, carnivals and during fundraising activities.

As I understand it Debra and Anne will continue as coaches or be part of a team that looks after our U17 and U23 teams, as well as maintaining their personal commitment to the Ladies March Past Team.

I am sure they will be available for advice to Nicole Bridges and Millie Suters, new coaches of the Nippers (Juniors) should it be sought and provide a watchful eye required. You can guarantee that Debra and anne won’t be too far away.

The Collaroy Surf Club is indebted to both ladies for their enthusiasm, commitment, dedication and wonderful spirit shown over many years to the Collaroy Junior March Past Team – our sincere thanks.

Race Secretary’s Report

Unfortunately, there was no Club Competition held this year.

Swimming Club Vs Surf Club 20 Person Relay

The annual Swimming Club Vs Surf Club 20 person relay was contested on 20th March 2016.

Once again, there was plenty of interest from Club members wanting to swim, with only two last minute changes on the day before the race commenced. With only a few last minute changes, we had a strong team to take it to the Swimming Club.

The surf and the tide were up and the waves had been crashing into the pool all morning. The pool was very murky from the turbulence the waves had created. You would think this would play into the hands of the surf Club swimmers, i.e. similar to surf conditions, but this was not the case….

a number of our swimmers struggled to keep a straight line down the pool, in particular Tara Bowyer, who probably swam 75m in the 50m race, zigzagging from one rope to another the entire way down. The race was close for the first 10 swimmersbut we started to kick away to a small lead by the time we got to our “big guns”, leaving it up to them to bring it home. The Surf Club touched in front and took out the annual event.

The team:1. Charlie Jormanainen, 2. Jake de Kort, 3. Hannah Gilmartin, 4. Tara Bowyer, 5. Scott McMurdo, 6. Reece Bosward, 7. Bella Charlesworth, 8. Finn O’Shea, 9. Lauren armstrong, 10. Michael Kember, 11. Thomas g arland, 12. James Burns, 13. Gregg Armstrong, 14. Jackson Burns, 15. Jakob Hammond, 16. Shane Armstrong, 17. Angus Schmidt, 18. adam Ware, 19. Matthew g ittoes, 20. Mitchell Trim.

Thanks to all those that participated and to those who cheered on our team.

Chief Instructor’s Report

2015-16 has been another busy year in education and training. We have had another 56 new awards achieved in a variety of areas including Bronze Medallion, Surf Rescue Certificate,IRB Crew and IRB Drivers. A big congratulations to all of our members who have upskilled and been successful in their new awards.

The courses were held through our annual September and January intensive weeks. They also included a part time course ending in December, which had a great uptake by Nipper parents that we hope will continue next year.

On top of planning and delivering all of these courses, the same assessors have put over 500 members through their annual proficiencies in Bronze and SRC. This year saw the inclusion of delegates to assist with proficiencies, and we hopeto include these even further in future proficiencies. Thank you to all of you for your efforts and help.

Of course, my thanks extend to the entire education team who have not only supported the Club in their commitment, but also myself on so many levels. To g reg MacMahon, Phil Mickan, Marianne Troop, Andrew Sole, Tara Sole, Gary Beauchamp, and all trainers and assessors, probationary trainers, and all of the other helping hands, thank you so, so much. These trainers and assessors also need to be thanked for their support for Branch; doing assessments at many other Clubs along the beaches.

There is absolutely no way that the education and assessment role could ever be done by one person, so thank you to everyone for the help, support and most of all the time you have given to the Club.

Lastly, to wrap up the year, thanks to the Club for their support, and all the members who have supported education and taken the opportunity this year to develop your skills! I look forward to seeing Collaroy go from strength to strength, maintaining our high standards of education and doubling our awards!

Sponsorship Report

Our Club has enjoyed another successful season on and off the beach, due in part to our large number of generous sponsors and donors. The majority of them have been connected with Collaroy SLSC for many years, however, each new season sees fresh ‘troops’ willing to support our Club and members.

This past season we welcomed the generous financialassistance of North Side Cabling, which enabled us to provide touring kit for our Nippers who competed at the State Titles, held at Umina. Many thanks to David Barbour for joining our ranks as a Club sponsor.

Our surf boat fleet was further expanded with the purchase ofanother new boat early in the season. The ‘Steve Scott’ was christened and launched at a Club ceremony held on our home beach and attended by a large crowd that included sponsors, members and other interested onlookers. Our thanks go to Dave Hopper (Collaroy Boat Captain) and Greg Broome who coordinated the boat acquisition and the generous sponsorship funding provided by Wagecover Australia, The Beach Club Collaroy, Landscape Solutions, Raine & Horne Collaroy and Dee Why, Kaipara Investments, Lowick Farm Mudgee and The Flying Herons (NZ).

Because of the ongoing generosity of the Macintosh Foundation, another significant item was provided to ourClub during the season. a stylish new R&R competition reel, commemorated to the late Paul “Porky’’ edwards had immediate impact winning gold medals at the State and aussie Titles for Collaroy R&R teams. Thanks to David Macintosh aM, his Foundation and Porky!!

Our ongoing community partnership with The Nine Network is doing really well and their substantial annual cash contribution brings a rare smile to our Treasurer’s face! This year’s Collaroy east Coast Masters bore the Nine Network brand and their marketing team was very visible on the beach interacting with all who attended.

In collaboration with our very good friends, The Beach Club Collaroy, we have recommenced the Saturday afternoon fundraising raffles. This is generating valuable weekly funds for our general revenue needs. Thanks to a regular crew of Club members, friends and Amy Hynes the raffles are popular withthe winners of course and everyone who just enjoys kicking the can to support our fabulous Club.

another well organised and successful Collaroy SLSC g olf Day fundraiser was held in January, raising approximately $15,000 towards general Club revenue needs. Congratulations to the organising committee and all who participated in the event.

I am very hopeful that by this time next year some exciting new sponsor relationships will be in place, providing additional

financial support for our Club.

as always, please take every opportunity to thank and do business with any of the generous sponsors and donors that are listed in this annual Report.

Venue Manager’s Report

Another year has gone by, and as Venue Manager, I have shown many people through our venue. Collaroy SLSC is a terrific venue and consequently has been booked out fairlyregularly.

To give you a snapshot, I have produced a table that shows the type of bookings we regularly receive:

Weddings 3Branch meetings/courses 11Music Festival 3Collaroy Club meetings/training/functions 48Birthday Parties 11Wedding anniversary’s 6Ad/Film Shoots 4Wakes/Funerals 3Others 14

I would like to pass on a huge thank you to Jon and Amy, our caretakers who have assisted with the smooth running of this venue over the past 12 months. Not only do they clean up after Club functions but they also have worked for me behind the bar on many occasions.

Also, to Geoff Small, Jelly Fahey and Janine Fahey, who have been the backbone of the Bar for many of the functions noted above. Our Licensee, Luke Hochkins, as always is great assisting at all levels within the venue.

There is a core group of volunteer workers behind the bar on Sundays and at Club functions – you know who you are and I thank you for assisting, as I cannot do this on my own.

We have had quite a few expenses this year with equipment breaking down and needing to be repaired or replaced. Therefore, a huge thank you goes to Neil armstrong and the Premises Committee.

We really need a few more members to get their RSa so we can run the venue more efficientl . Having your RSA also means that you can work a ‘paid’ function and be remunerated.

This venue is one of our major fund raising platforms and benefits every member in some way or form. If you have anyideas on how to improve it and what it offers – please let me know.

Here’s cheers, and see you for a cold cleanser soon and earn possible selection in “The Fizzmasters XI”.

Aussies’ 2016 Touring Team Report

A large team travelled to Sunshine Coast for the first time since1980 and thanks to all those who towed boats and trailers to ensure our competitors had the gear to compete with. Thanks to Geoff Small and Janine Fahey for coordinating the forms of those touring, and to Neil armstrong for collating the touring levies. Competition was held over 9 days with success commencing in the Masters’ area and continuing on through the week. Our team competed at their best, with dignity, and pride in the red cap. Results are in the results section of this annual Report.

Our communications worked well throughout the championships through SMS with the use of radios being not as necessary as at past venues. The team dinner was well attended with wonderful speeches by all section heads. Thanks to Richard Trim for locating a venue. The a lex Hotel were great hosts and the food fantastic. I would like to particularly thank our section coordinators who kept communication open and timely allowing us to pass on information to the team and Club at home as it was received. Philippa Wight for Masters, Craig Williams at Beach, Bailey Dwyer in Boats, Gregg Armstrong at Board and Ski and Nicole Bridges for R&R. I must commend our Team Captains Abbey Jones and Michael Kember for their leadership and support during the Championships. Their speeches at the team dinner were from the heart and were dedicated to their teammates and Collaroy. Thank you both for being outstanding leaders for our team and ambassadors for our Club. It gave me great joy and pride to see the Collaroy red cap competing in so many areas. It was wonderful to see so many Collaroy competitors again in the water area, particularly on skis. It is a result of dedication by those who believe in our young competitors and support of the committee to this section. Next season we move back to Kirra on the g old Coast and in 2018 to Perth. Planning for these trips needs to commence now (especially for Perth) to ensure future successful australian Titles for Collaroy. Greg Broome Team Manager

Premises’ Report

The Premises Committee for the 2015-16 season was comprised of Neil armstrong, Tony aouad, g raham Hart (Secretary), Steve g reen, Kenyon McKie, g reg MacMahon, g eoff Small and David Perry as Chairperson.I would like to thank all of the members for their efforts throughout the season in upgrading and maintaining various elements within our premises.

The major undertaking for this season was the introduction of an electronic entry system for the Club’s gymnasium that, after some initial teething problems is now working efficientl . This allows the Committee to monitor gym usage as well as to significantly improve Clubhouse securit . I would like to thank Kenyon and Tony for their valuable input into this project.

We envisage that this system, following a suitable trial period, will be expanded in the future to include a number of other

areas of the Clubhouse.

The remainder of work for the season was mainly routine maintenance and repair work to fittings and equipment becauseof exposure to the coastal environment. Numerous doors, locks and fittings required repair or replacement and for this Iwould again like to thank Club member Craig Thomas and his company A J Aluminium for their assistance with installation and materials.

an unusual item of interest that was undertaken was the removal of the old anchor located at the front of the Clubhouse that was replaced with another anchor, kindly donated from the Sydney Ferry “Collaroy”. This was coordinated by Geoff, and I would like to acknowledge several people for their assistance. First, Des Woodley from Narrabeen Scrap Metals for storing the anchor and arranging its delivery to the Club as well as the removal of the old one. To Mark Schmidt from PacificMarine Pty Ltd for supervising the placement and the extensive welding work required to safely secure the new anchor. Thank you both.

A number of projects are planned for the off-season. They include a further upgrade to the downstairs ladies and mens’ showers and toilets, and the replacement of ceiling fans and function tables for the main hall and the refurbishing of the lounge and balcony stools.

The majority of Clubhouse maintenance and improvements is undertaken by members of the Premises Committee, and other willing members of our Club who volunteer their time and expertise. As Chairperson, I have received assistance from all members of the Committee, however I would like to take this opportunity to thank g eoff Small for his contribution in attending to emergency repairs and his willingness to assist, often at short notice.

In conclusion, I would also like to thank our Caretakers Amy Ryniker and Jon Hynes for their continued efforts. They clean and maintain our Club premises, as well as ensuring a high level of security and maintain a very positive relationship with members of the Premises Committee.

David PerryPremises Committee Chairman.

First Aid

This year our first aid room was very well utilised.

Our season started with gear inspection in September, in which our First Aid room passed with flying colours

Throughout the season, Collaroy hosted various carnivals including the Young g uns, east Coast Masters and the Ocean Swim. a ll of these carnivals require First a id personnel to be provided by the Club to enable these events to be held. Both our Club members and some external Notre Dame students who had attended courses run by Collaroy, attended these events to ensure the safety of competitors, work parties and the public.

Thank you to all the volunteers who worked these carnivals as this enables the Club to host such events, which in turn provides a platform for competitors; and brings additional funding to our Club.

Besides our events, the everyday running of the First Aid room for patrols functioned well with Patrol Captains and patrols keeping the room in a good condition on a regular basis. Well done and thank you for contributions.

Youth Opportunity Makers Program 2016 – Tara Ellevsen

I was fortunate enough to be the female representative for our Northern Beaches SLS Branch for Youth Opportunity Makers (YOM) Program 2016. 30 young surf lifesavers from around NSW all gathered at the Collaroy Centre (convenient!) for four days to discuss the future of Surf Lifesaving NSW and how it can be improved. We shared stories, ideas and Club policies with one another to bring back to our Branches to make suggestions for things that we would like to see change.

Everyone was put into a group and given a fictional Club tomanage, a strategic goal for the Club as well as roles inside that Club to give us a greater understanding on how decisions are made in our own surf clubs. I was voted as Club President and gained a lot of knowledge as to the challenges of resource allocation and general economic stability of a surf club. a t the end of the program each group gave a presentation to a panel of Surf Lifesaving NSW’s most influential members, includingpresident Tony Haven, on how they planned on reaching their strategic goal. This activity aimed at preparing us to be the future leaders of our surf clubs and of Surf Life Saving NSW.

Throughout the four days, many speakers from various organisations came to speak to my YOM group about leadership and opportunities within surf lifesaving, which taught me so much and really built upon my knowledge of the institution and what it has to offer. aside from this educational aspect of the program, YOM 2016 was filled with fun and newfriendships. Trivia, dancing, IRB and a jet ski ride and a visit from the Westpac Helicopter were just a few of the activities provided for us throughout the program, as well as bonding and team building exercises. I made so many awesome and like minded friends while on the program from all over the State and I gained a lot of positive influence from the fantastic andsupportive facilitators.

I would strongly recommend anyone aged 15-17 years old in our surf Club to apply for YOM 2017 if they are interested in leadership and the future of surf life saving. YOM 2016 was an amazing, fun and valuable experience, which has given me the ability to put thoughts into action and empower the youth of Surf Life Saving NSW.

Obituaries

The past season has witnessed the passing of three prominent persons who, although never active patrolling members at Collaroy, played a significant role in the great atmosphere andcamaraderie of the Club and a compassion for the success of their fellow members and one who played an important local role in the development of swimming facilities.

I have also included a small story on the significance of therecent scattering of Norman (Norm) Twight’s ashes.

Paul (Porky) Edwards

Thursday, March 3rd, 2016 was a sad day for the Collaroy Surf Club, in particular the R&R section, as Paul (Porky) edwards passed away after a period of illness.

Whilst never a financial member of Collaro , Porky coached the R&R teams for almost 10 years, after an initial approach by Life Member Paul de Kort in 2007 for assistance. Words can never fully express the depth of gratitude all Collaroy competitors, past and present, feel for Porky, his commitment, enthusiasm and passion for R&R. every weekend the North Cronulla member travelled from the Sutherland Shire for the Collaroy training sessions.

It is not surprising his R&R knowledge filtered down throughthe age groups with his extensive input into the R&R coaching manual, the ‘Bible’ for that event. Porky’s unique style brought a new level of coaching to the Club; he shared his ability to instill knowledge to gain confidence, thus ensuring each and everycompetitor knew they had a special part to play in the team. as R&R devotee Paul de Kort has said – “for someone like myself, who has coached R&R over a number of years, I felt I learnt something at every training session”.

Page 31: COLLAROY SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB · 2016-07-26 · Norm Chaffer, Ray Isaacs, Steve green, Karen McKie Competitors’ Support Committee: geoff Small (Chairman), Gregg Armstrong, Greg

Page 31

Porky’s list of achievements at australian Titles level is very impressive for one who is predominately behind the scenes – the quiet achiever:

a t the 2014 australian Championships in Perth, he coached the team to win gold medals in the coveted Six Person event, enabling the competitors to bring home to Collaroy the “Premiers Flag”.

In 2014 he assisted all Collaroy members to become the only Club in australia to win the Ron Sandstrom Trophy as “Champion R&R Club in Australia” for the third time.

Since 2007, Porky assisted Collaroy members win gold, silver and bronze some fourteen times, as well as numerous finalsat both Branch, State and National level. The R&R fraternity is high in their praise of Porky, whose dedication, commitment and unselfish devotion to the youngsters success helped develop their character and so ensure their passage to worthwhile citizen and community members.

Thanks to the sponsorship of David and Kerrie Macintosh and the Macintosh Foundation, the R&R section has dedicated their latest reel, the “Paul ‘Porky’ Edwards”. This reel played an important role at the recent australian Championships helping the teams to finals and several medals

Porky’s last days were spent at the Calvary Hospital Hospice in Kogarah, where he was ‘tickled pink’ to be presented with a photo of the new reel. as a measure of the esteem in which he was held, everyone but one (Jesse Bowyer who was travelling abroad) of the past and present R&R members visited Porky as a final farewell and a thank you

To his wife Leonie, children Belinda, Nicole and Brad please accept the condolences from the membership of the Collaroy Surf Club on Porky’s passing and we thank you for sharing Porky and his knowledge with us for all those years.

The final words on Porky belong to Paul de Kort

“a few days later at Porky’s funeral, we farewelled a Champion Coach and a Champion Bloke”

Maurie MacMahon

Maurie passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on January 14th, 2016, at Mona Vale Hospital.

He became involved with the Club when son Greg joined in 1974, and was always rolling up his sleeves to assist, not only with the Board and Ski Team, but in general around the Club.

In 1977 he became a member of the “Ways and Means” Committee, bringing his business acumen to assist this Committee, which at the time was responsible for fundraising and management advice to the Club, a role he maintained until 1980.

He continued to assist the Club in many ways and in 1994 stepped up to assist the g eneral Committee by taking on the Sponsorship Officer role, and brought with it a no nonsenseapproach introducing new ideas to raising funds along with several new sponsors to the Club.

Over his many years of membership of the Club, Maurie was always available to assist with BBQ’s and Club run events. He attended many carnivals including Branch, N.S.W. State and australian Titles, watching his sons g reg and Peter compete, mainly in March Past events. This continued as his grandsons Josh and Lachie became Collaroy competitors.

Since the passing of his wife and loyal supporter eunice several years ago, Maurie and his good mate Mick Hogan became regular fixtures at Sunday Sippers, sitting in the noreastern corner of the lounge, holding fort! In fact, the corner is known as “Waldorf and Statler” of the Muppets fame.

Maurie will be sadly missed around the Club, always interested in how fellow members were getting on but will mainly be remembered for the solid contribution of over forty years to the betterment of the Club.

The Collaroy Surf Life Saving Club extends its’ condolences to Maurie’s family of g reg, Peter and Helene, and his grandsons Josh and Lachie.

James (Jim) Frank Kell Tate

Distinguished Service Member Sue Rossi’s father James (Jim) Tate passed away on February 3rd, 2016, aged 92 years.

Jim’s achievements on the Northern Beaches are historical and worth noting. as a swimming coach, he and his wife Yvonne started the Mona Vale Swim School in 1963 for learn to swim and squad swimming, in a 13-metre pool in their front yard. As the youngsters progressed, Jim would train them at the Collaroy and Narrabeen Rock Pools. Jim’s daughter Sue Rossi clearly remembers the cold, early morning starts at the rock pool where frequently during training, waves would break over them.

The ‘Forum’ on Collaroy Street, built by Sue’s parents, began in 1972 and opened for business in 1973. Under cover, it had a 25-metre pool and a ‘baby pool’. The ‘Forum’ also had a sauna, spa, squash courts, gymnasium and motel accommodation –

Page 32

ahead of its time and a fantastic development for the Northern Beaches.

Some of the Northern Beaches top swimmers trained there – Sean Kenny, Craig Riddington, g uy Leech and Lisa Forrest to name a few.

Jim’s achievement in teaching youngsters to swim was synonymous with the area and remembered by many. On the bottom of the Collaroy Rock Pool in ceramic tile is his name – TATE – which Sue found some time ago when swimming with the Collaroy Ladies Swimming Club.

Innovative people do sometimes come along and serve the local community well. Jim ensured that many youngsters learnt to swim and went on to enjoy the coastline and their environs.

The Collaroy Surf Club extends condolences to the Rossi Family – Sue, Carlo and children Simone and Adrian.

John Williams

John passed away on the Monday of the Queens Birthday weekend, June 8th, 2015, after a short period of illness, aged 86 years.

John was a social member who epitomised the camaraderie that the Collaroy Surf Club enjoys. He loved nothing more than to go to surf carnivals, resplendent in Club colours, to watch his family and friends compete for Collaroy.

around the Club and on the beach he thrived on the banter between spouses in the Mens’ and Ladies’ March Past teams! a fter all, at the time of his passing, his wife annette and his niece Karen McKie were both members of the team. Ten months on and if still with us, he would have been chuffed to watch annette and Karen marching in the Ladies’ team at the same time as his son Craig (Collaroy Beach Captain) was competing in the Mens’ team with Karen’s husband Kenyon!

This year, the men were victorious at the australian Championships on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Perhaps his greatest thrill however, would have been to watch his grandchildren Katie and Nicholas Williams compete in beach events. Watching Katie win several gold, silver and bronze medals over the years in beach flags, sprint and relay events would be some of his proudest moments. a t last year’s Australian Titles at Kirra Beach, Queensland, it was evident that John was not well, but still he managed to be at the beach to watch Katie and Nicholas compete in the heats and semi-finalsof their respective Beach Flag events.

However, he missed Katie’s final but did talk to her before theevent. No doubt, the pep talk would have been “just give it 110%!” She went on to win gold!

Every year John enjoyed celebrating the Club’s successes at the aussies and a beer when away with the team. When held in Perth, the Aussies were an opportunity for John to catch up with family, as many family members are or have been involved with Western australian Surf Clubs.

Away from Surf Lifesaving, John’s other passion was racquet sports, be it tennis or squash. For many years he was the President of the Sydney Cricket g round Tennis Club, and as a player in his younger days his claim to fame was victory over the great Lew Hoad.

As a Club supporter, John’s passing has left a large void. The Collaroy Surf Club is a family Club and as such, it is in this manner that we offer our condolences to the Williams’ and McKie Families.

Tuesday, april 17th, 2016 was a warm autumn afternoon and the Collaroy touring team was either competing or preparing in Queensland for this years’ australian Cham pionships.

On this day, the Twight Family held a private ceremony for Norman Twight on the Collaroy Headland above the rock pool, on the reserve named after grandparents Stan and Florence Twight.

Norm passed away a year ago in Western australia; his ashes and wreath were taken out to sea by his nephew Jamie Twight on the back of the Warringah Council jet ski, driven by the Council Lifeguard. (Many decades ago, Norm was one of the first Manly- arringah Council Beach Inspectors, as they were then known).

Family members in attendance at the ashes scattering were from W.A., his brother Stan and son Garry, his wife Julie and their son John with his wife Stephanie. Representing his brother Dick was sister-in-law Betty and her son Jamie, his wife g ill and their family.

It is ironic that at the time of Norms’ ashes scattering, our mens’ Open Boat Crew were preparing to contest the Australian Boat Title that has eluded the Club for exactly seventy years, since the victorious crew in 1946 comprised Norman and Dick Twight, Pat armstrong, Frank Hall and our oldest living member, Graeme Bruce.

a portion of Norm’s ashes were also scattered on a cricket oval in Western Australia, named after his older brother Stan – “The Stan Twight Cricket Oval”.

With this last scattering off Collaroy Beach and Stan’s burial elsewhere, it brings to an end the Twight Dynasty, one which has been in existence for 105 years since the Collaroy Surf Clubs formation in 1911.

He joins his brothers Dick and Roger who were scattered together one year ago in a moving ceremony when the 90 participating U23 boat crews formed an impressive guard of honour during the Clubs Annual Young Guns Boat carnival.

To every member, their families or supporters who have endured bereavement during the past year, we offer our sincere condolences.

To the members and supporters who are experiencing illness or infirmity we wish you a speedy recover .

Finally, on a happier note, to all those newly engaged, married or who have welcomed a new member to their family, we offer our warmest congratulations and hope that one day there will be more Red Caps at Collaroy.

Treasurer’s Report

The Club recorded a loss of $19,294 for the year ended 30 April 2016. The Club’s cash position also reduced by $42,456 during that period. Whilst this is not an ideal result there are two significant factors that contributed to this

1) The Club took delivery of 2 new Thundercat IRB Hulls and 2 new motors during the year at a total cost of almost $40,000

2) Stock levels of the Club’s apparel for Resale increased by $10,249. This area needs to be monitored closely to ensure that these levels are managed downwards over coming years.

Some other items of particular interest are:• The Club purchased a new surfboat with a

component of the associated sponsorship funds being spread over two years.

• The Club received a full refund from SLSA on an Arancia IRB Hull purchased the previous season

due to a complete breakdown of SLSa’s supplier accreditation and scrutineering processes.

• Carnival entries cost approximately $36,000 with entries to the australian Championships alone amounting to nearly $9,000.

• The Club continued to invest significantly to modernise and maintain the premises.

• Commencement of Saturday Raffles at The Beach Club in late November 2015 provided much needed funds and will give our fundraising efforts a significant boost over a full yea .

I would like to acknowledge Bill Goodman for his continued support over the past year including the submission of the quarterly g ST returns. Our Honorary auditor, Raymond Kemsley from Raymond Kemsley and Co., retired this year and I would like to thank him for auditing the Club’s books since 2006/07 and wish him well in his retirement. Our new Auditor is Jack McCann from McCann Accounting.

Running the finances of a Club such as ours relies on theextensive support and cooperation of many people.

Accordingly I express my appreciation to members of the Club’s executive, g eneral Committee, expenditure Review Committee, Premises Committee, Junior Committee, Janine Fahey (Registrations), Philippa Wight (Carnival entries) and Martin Bowyer (Venue Manager) as well as other committees and members who have helped out.
