Determinedtopursueamusicalcareer,TreigleenteredLoyolaUniversitywherehestudiedwithElisabethWoodforsevenyears.HewontheNewOrleansOperaHouseAuditionsoftheAirin1947andmadehisoperaticdebutwiththecompanyastheDukeofVeronainRoméoetJuliette.Overthenextsixyearshedevelopedarepertoireoftwenty-tworoleswiththeNewOrleansOperaandstudiedbothdramaandballettoprepareforhiscareerasasingingactor.Hesangsolosatreligiousservicesofalldenominations,performedwiththeNewOrleansPopsandtheNewOrleansPhilharmonicOrchestra,andhostedaradioshowonWWL.AccordingtohisdaughterPhyllis,theproprietorsofWWLsuggestedthathechangehisnamefrom“Addie”toamoreprofessionalstagename,andafterstudyingvariousnames,Treiglefinallychose“Norman,”thenamepreviouslybestowedonhisson.In1952TreigleauditionedandwasacceptedbytheNewYorkCityOpera,acompanyhechoseforitsfocusonensemblepresentationsandoriginal,modernproductions.HisdebutasCollineinLabohèmein1953wasthebeginningof20yearsofmemorableperformancesbyTreigleinNewYorkCityduringthespringandfallseasonsaswellasoff-seasonappearanceswithoperacompanies,symphoniesandconcertvenuesthroughouttheWesternHemisphere.Adevoutlyreligiousman,hecontinuedtomakeguestappearancesatvariouschurchesthroughouthiscareer.Althoughonly5’11”and140pounds,Treiglehadavoicethatbeliedhissizeandadazzlingactingability.HewasknownforhisdominatingportrayalsofReverendBlitchinCarlisleFloyd’sSusannah,GrandpaMossinCopland’sTheTenderLand,EscamilioinCarmenandMephistophelesinbothFaustandMephistofeleaswelltheleadrolesinBorisGudonov,Figaro,DonGiovanni,andGianniSchicchi.HeandBeverlySillsoftensangtogetherinoperasincludingLesContesd'Hoffmann,Coqd’OrandGiulioCesarethatwasproducedtoshowcaseTreigleintheCityOpera’spremiereinnewfacilitiesatLincolnCenterin1966.In1973TreiglelefttheCityOperatoconcentrateinsteadonrolesinoperasproducedbyCincinnatiphilanthropistJ.RalphCorbett.HemadehisLondondebutinaCoventGardenproductionofFaustin1974,butdespiteongoingnegotiationsforaMetropolitanOperadebut,nodefinitearrangementswereeverfinalized.Despiteavagabondcareer,heremainedaNewOrleanian.HeandhissecondwifeLindalivednearthelakefrontwithherdaughter,Lisa,whoTreigleadopted.HisdaughterPhyllisSusannah(bornin1961andnamedafterPhyllisCurtin,Treigle’sSusannahco-star)livedwithhermother.Hesmokedconstantly,drankScotch,enjoyedwageringontheracesattheNewOrleansFairgrounds,andwasadmiredforhissenseofhumorandgenerosity.Attheendof1974,TreiglereturnedfromLondondispiritedbyafailingmarriage,lukewarmreviewsfortheFaustproduction,andaninjuredfoot.Foryearshehadtakensleepingpillstohelphimsleepdaysafterstayingawakemostnights,adependencywhich,accordingtointerviewswithfriendsandcolleagues,hadbecomeanaddiction.
