Thesis: Although the CAS students find the college dress code a nuisance, it should be implemented because of its practicability & benificiality in the near future. In our paper as an introduction deals with:• “First Impression Counts” Factor• Significance of Dress Code• Professional & Educational Respect

Our paper contains:• The overview of Silliman University (College of Arts & Sciences) Dress Code• Benefits of having a dress code• Arguments raised to those who are against the dress code

The impact of C.A.S. dress code among the CAS students in S.U. for the S.Y. 2008-09

The Three Main Arguments of the Paper:

I. Economical

II. Psycho-sociological

III. Institutional

This focuses on less money & time consumed with the aid of dress code.

B. Reduces clothing expenses

A. Saves time on choosing what to wear

Dress Code Policy reduces clothing expenses for both the parents and their children or teenagers. Spending and losing too much for few school attires would not be a problem after all. With the aid of this implementation, students would not worry how less or how more they should use up in payment in expense of school get up. Our money would not just end its fate for apparels, not to mention school projects, contributions, miscellaneous fees, tuition fees and the like. How a typical student could survive facing these things, if some of his/her needs are not met, is more important compared to some pieces of clothing (Murray, 2007 July30).

Students that wear uniforms or follow the common dress codes going to school know what clothes are acceptable and do not spend extra time each morning preparing for school. Many students got late in going to school deciding what to wear and what are the outfits they need to avoid (Pedzich, 2002).

I. Economical

II. Psycho-sociological

III. Institutional

The Three Main Arguments of the Paper:

This refers to the behavioral impact of dress codes on students.

A. Reduces distinction among social classes

B. Reduces distractions

Dress codes and uniforms also encourage distinction of character and personality instead of appearance. What truly matters about a person is not what brand of clothing he or she is wearing, but the character of that person. Another positive aspect of school uniforms is that uniforms place an emphasis on learning, not on clothing (Sloth, 2008 February25).

The state of comfort is defined as feeling of euphoria, when there are no eye sore habiliments around you. Being in this state allows a human mind and body to feel relaxed catch up fast comprehensions of the mind. Try to imagine an attention seeker person in your classroom. You would rather be bothering seeing and wondering why that person wears that way instead of focusing on what you should be giving attention to—in this context, academic lessons. Of course, it is not just the student fellows that are victims of this incident, but also the teacher (Escano, 2008 June20).

In the end, this is a school—where minds are given preparation to fulfill our endeavors in this society, rather, a training ground for our moneys to be well prepared for flashy raiment and ostentation. Uniforms reduce peer pressure. With society putting much emphasis on the outward appearance, uniforms are a way to avoid the competition of wearing the latest fashion trends (Studak & Workman, 2007 August21).

The Three Main Arguments of the Paper:

I. Economical

II. Psycho-sociological

III. Institutional

This refers to the nature of the school; how this institution realized; as well as the organizations or associations that would soon intervene to this institution.

“Having no dress code or uniform may give students the mindset that they should be aware of what they wear, whether they are appealing or not, making a school not a learning corners of our future, but instead, a fashion show run way. Dress code policies somehow boost better academic performance and ratings especially for students and the institution itself. The PAASCU is suggesting for a dress code or uniform in this university in order to make this institution deserving of the rating that the accrediting union had given to this university. Silliman, as a Christian institution, should also be an inculcator of discipline and order for its students including its teaching personnel” (Grapa, AC).

B. PAASCU as an accrediting unit

The Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) is a private, voluntary, non-profit and non-stock corporation which was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of the Philippines on December 2, 1957. It is a service organization which accredits academic programs which meet commonly accepted standards of quality education.Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Accrediting_Association_of_Schools,_Colleges_and_Universities
