COLLEGE MENTORS FOR KIDS COMMUNITY REPORT

Dear Friends,

Big things are happening at College Mentors for Kids, and the 2015-2016 school year was one to remember. We celebrated a monumental milestone as our organization marked 20 years of serving kids and college students! What started as a dream in 1995 by two college students wanting to make an impact in their community has turned into a nationwide mentoring program. In the 15-16 school year we reached another milestone as we grew to serve more than 2,000 children through 2,500 college student volunteers at 33 College Mentors for Kids chapters across the country.

As the national footprint of College Mentors for Kids grows, so does our impact. We are now seeing our past little buddy participants turn into our college student mentors and successful adults. All of us at College Mentors for Kids have our eyes on big things as we look to the future, continuing to connect college students with the most to give to kids who need it most.

We thank you, our supporters, for your trust and generosity as we work toward changing the lives of children through inspiration, and college students through service. We hope you’ll remain on our team as we continue this important work for the next 20 years.

For the kids,

Lilly at her high school graduation

Lilly as a little buddy at Purdue Universit

y

Meet Lilly, former little buddy at the Purdue University chapter of College Mentors for Kids.

My name is Lilly Gastineau. I am 18 years old and a recent graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School. I was a little buddy in College Mentors for Kids from 1st through 4th grade with the Purdue University chapter. Through College Mentors, I gained many friends, knowledge about career paths, and an incredible passion for my education.

College Mentors has taught me many life lessons that I still practice and hold true to my heart today. This program has shown me that even at a young age, anything is possible. This program has shown me that if you work and try hard enough, you can achieve any goal you wish in life. College Mentors has shown me friendship and that everyone is family.

I am currently enrolled at Ivy Tech Community College in Lafayette, Indiana in the Associate Accelerated Program. I will receive my Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences and then plan to transfer to Purdue University to complete a Master’s degree in Business Administration.

Without College Mentors for Kids, I don’t know where I would be today. This program changed my life and has given me the strength and pathway to an infinite possibility of eye opening careers.

“This program has shown me that, even at a young age, anything is

possible.”

Heather and her little buddy

Meet Heather, former little buddy at DePauw University and current college student volunteer at Purdue University.

My name is Heather. I grew up on my family’s farm in Cloverdale, Indiana and was a little buddy in College Mentors for Kids at DePauw University. My experience was awesome. I learned so much about college and about the community I was growing up in. Through College Mentors for Kids, I learned how important it is to stay focused in school and to be involved in school. Today, I am a junior at Purdue University, studying Agriculture Education and volunteering for the Purdue chapter of College Mentors for Kids.

This year, I have a leadership role in College Mentors for Kids. I want to be more involved with the program and be able to give my time back to the organization. As a little buddy myself, I was able to get so much help and feel confident in myself. So, now it’s time for me to give back. College Mentors for Kids pushed me to become better and was a strong support system for me as a child. I want to now be the support and guidance for someone else.

“I want to now be the support

and guidance for someone else.”

Meet Jaimee, college student volunteer at The Ohio State University.

My name is Jaimee, and I am a senior at The Ohio State University studying marketing and logistics. I have been involved with the OSU chapter for the last two and a half years and have been able to see the impact that this program has had, not only on the kids we serve, but myself as a mentor as well.

My little buddy is a sassy 9 year-old girl, and last school year I spent all of my Tuesdays looking forward to the big hug I would get from her as she hopped off the bus. Each week, I looked forward to seeing her face light up every time she experienced something new and talking with her about what she had learned and how that applied to her life, and her future as well.

As our connection grew I started to learn more about her and her life circumstances. My heart broke as she told me these things, as if they were just normal life circumstances for a 9 year-old girl to experience. I was so inspired by her optimism and overall joy for life, despite the situations she faced. Talk about a new life perspective! Through our relationship, the whole mission and vision of the program came together for me. College Mentors is about the immeasurable impact that we both have on each other. I like to think I have made an impact on Franiza’s life…and there is no doubt she has changed mine.

“College Mentors is about the

immeasurable impact that we both have on

each other.“

MAKING LASTING CHANGEIn August 2015, College Mentors for Kids found former little buddies who are now old enough to have graduated from high school and beyond. SMARI, an Indianapolis-based market research firm, surveyed these former little buddies to learn about the impact College Mentors for Kids had on their lives and learn about where they are now.

100% said their mentor was a role model for themROLE
