Maymester course. Course topic: Performing Sexual Health- UNC Sex-Ed Squad Course description: This intensive course will explore the history, theoriesand strategies behind activist sexual health education theatre as it has been used both locally and globally. The course will begin with an intensivetraining on sex, sexuality, HIV/AIDS and the powerful history of artists' interventions to open urgent dialogues on these taboo topics. We will study thework of several socially engaged theatre practitioners and examine how humor, personal narrative and non-judgmental, sex-positive approaches have beenutilized to open empowering and educational dialogues about sexual health by and for a diverse range of communities. We will then turn theory into actionand form our own theater collective known as the "UNC Sex Ed Squad." As an ensemble of artist-educators we will write, rehearse, produce, and tour anengaging and challenging piece of activist theater aimed at educating ninth graders in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools about HIV/AIDS. This coursewill be, by its very nature, hands-on and experiential. Students will work as writers, performers, directors, and facilitators. The primary methods used inthis course are based in collaborative group work: creating an original show (using participatory research to create theatrical material that is appropriateto the local context, personal writing, and improvisation); experimenting with various acting techniques and exploring social change and activist theatre;

Maymester course. Course topic: Kinship, Community & Globalization Course description: With the continuing growth of technologies, the increase in travel,and the movements of products and people across the borders of nation states, the concepts of family and community are changing. Foregrounded by theserealities, this course combines theories of family and communication with documentations of lived experiences, to interrogate family communication patternsin contemporary North American--as well as global--culture. In doing so, the class encourages students to engage with the relationship betweenglobalization and family structure, learn to think and write critically and thoughtfully about the cultural realties of family, kinship, and communitythrough a global perspective, and to connect these global realities to our own local experiences. COMM 120 prerequisite is waived for Maymester only. Inorder to enroll without the prerequisite, please contact Carley Niland at [email protected].

In this course we will equally divide our time between the short stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville, with a particular eye to how this workhelped these canonical authors work into and through the themes they pursued in such famous works as "The Scarlet Letter" and "Moby-Dick." In particular, wewill read Hawthorne's "Twice-Told Tales" and "Mosses from an Old Manse," as well as Melville's "Piazza Tales," other items published in important magazines,and the novella, "Billy Budd," his last work. Focusing intensively on short fiction will allow the class more time for active discussion of themes andconcepts these writers shared. More largely, we will be peering into the writers' workshops as they developed the characters and ideas that came to definetheir work. (There will be frequent quizzes, two 4-6 pp papers, and a final examination.)

20th Century European History in Graphic Novels. Having sprung into existence in the 1960s in the USA, graphic novels belong to a relatively new literarygenre and yet they have already made an impressive impact in both popular culture and within academic circles. Intrigued by their potential as a new form ofliterature, this course will engage with graphic novels on an intellectual level and examine the portrayal of a broad range of crucial historical events inEurope: World War I, the Weimar Republic, World War II and the Holocaust, the 1968 uprisings, the Fall of the Berlin Wall, German Reunification, and theBosnian War in ex-Yugoslavia. Together we will discuss how the graphic novel, as a genre that is at the intersection of the written word and visual modes ofrepresentation, aims to interpret these historical events.
