Biomedical EngineeringWHY BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING?
Biomedical engineering encompasses a broadrange of topics that focus on the interfacebetween biology and engineering. Biomedicalengineers design devices and develop methodsthat benefit society. ey work in excitingnew areas that directly affect the lives of manypeople. e predicted job growth is currentlygreater than in any other engineering field.
WHAT DO BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERS DO?
Biomedical engineers work at the cutting-edge of research and industry, and frequentlyaddress clinical, diagnostic and therapeuticapplications of engineering. For example, theymay be involved in diagnostic imaging oftissues, in engineering surfaces to ensurecompatibility of implants with the body, or increating sensors for monitoring the repair ofbiological systems. ey also work on thedesign of artificial organs, the development ofnew methods to detect and treat cancer, theproduction of devices to measure biologicalagents, and the creation of ways to obtain thecontrolled release of drugs.
HOW DO I BECOME A BIOMEDICAL ENGINEER?
UMaine’s biomedical engineering B.S.curriculum provides thorough training in thefundamentals of engineering and biologicalsciences. Students learn instrumentation andtechniques employed to analyze biologicalsystems and processes. ey are introduced tothe challenges and methodologies associatedwith manipulating biological systems and areexposed to current and future applications ofbiomedical engineering. Utilizing thisknowledge base, students develop the skills toengineer solutions to real-world problems.UMaine students are actively involved inengineering projects mentored by individualfaculty. e size of UMaine’s biomedicalengineering program allows students to
receive individual attention, with manyopportunities for direct interaction anddiscussion with faculty members. UMainealso offers a master’s degree in biomedicalengineering. Additionally, UMaine’s Collegeof Engineering offers a biomedicalengineering minor, a five-year B.S.-M.B.A.degree with the Maine Business School, and aminor in engineering leadership andmanagement.
WHAT CAN I DO WITH A DEGREE INBIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING?
e B.S. degree is suitable for entry-levelengineering careers and as preparation forgraduate-level study in engineering orscientific disciplines. e degree also serves as an excellent foundation for admission tomedical school.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Professors in UMaine’s biomedicalengineering program are all highly active andaccomplished researchers. Current researchprojects include the development ofnanoprobes for detection and imaging ofcancer; creation of model cellular membranesfor the study of membrane-proteininteractions; detection of pathogens andtoxins using molecular biosensors; andimprovement of tissue-implant compatibility.Undergraduates are encouraged to participatein projects such as these to gain hands-onexperience in the field, either for course creditor as paid employees.
CO-OPS AND INTERNSHIPS
UMaine faculty members help place studentsin summer internships in leading research anddiagnostics development laboratoriesthroughout New England. Placement withthese companies and research institutionstypically takes place in the junior and senioryears of the program.
