CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY LONG BEACH

California State University, Long Beach is a member of the 23-campus California State University (CSU) system. The initial college, known then as Los Angeles-Orange County State College, was established on January 29, 1949, and has since grown to become one of the state’s largest universities.

The frst classes in 1949 were held in a converted apartment building on Anaheim Street and the cost to enroll was just $12.50. The 169 transfer students selected from the 25 courses ofered in Teacher Education, Business Education, and Liberal Arts which were taught by 13 faculty members.

Enrollment increased in 1953 when freshman and sophomore students were admitted.

Expansion, in acreage, degrees, courses and enrollment continued in the 1960s, when the educational mission was modifed to provide instruction for undergraduate and graduate students through the addition of master’s degrees.

In 1972, the California Legislature changed the name to California State University, Long Beach. Today, more than 37,000 students are enrolled at Cal State Long Beach, and the campus annually receives high rankings in several national surveys.

What students fnd when they come here is an academic excellence achieved through a distinguished faculty, hard-working staf and an efective and visionary administration. The faculty’s primary responsibility is to create, through efective teaching, research and creative activities, a learning environment where students grow and develop to their fullest potential.

This year, because of the pandemic, we will celebrate the outstanding graduates of two classes – 2020 and 2021. They are earning doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees as well as credentials and certifcates. We are proud of our graduating students, who now go forward to serve society.

Dear Graduate,

Congratulations! Your graduation from college may be one of your, up to now, biggest milestones. And, for the Class of 2021, this remarkable accomplishment comes at a truly extraordinary moment in time.

On behalf of Cal State Long Beach, I want to thank you for your determination, persistence, and resolve over the past year. You have done something no college students in living memory have ever been asked to do. You stayed the course — you kept learning, studying, creating, exploring, innovating and serving — during a once-in-a-century global pandemic.

I also extend my thanks and congratulations to your families and friends — to all of those who have supported, encouraged and loved you as you pursued your academic dreams and adapted to a much-changed instructional environment.

Now, it is time to celebrate your college achievements and plan your next steps as you pursue your aspirations for the triumphs yet to come. Your Beach family celebrates with you. Your success, although very much dependent on your personal commitment, means a great deal to others, as well. As Dr. Loren J. Blanchard, formerly executive vice chancellor for Academic and Student Afairs for the CSU and now president of University of Houston Downtown, has said, “A degree in the hands of a student has transformative power for the individual, their family, their community and the nation.”

In the coming months, you may fnd yourself negotiating a very diferent world from the one you have known all your lives — the one you had imagined would greet you upon your college graduation. But, just as all your hard work, sacrifces, experiences and achievements have brought you to this point — to this milestone moment — they have also helped prepare you for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Every graduating class in history faced some unknowns. You’re ready for them.

In this most extraordinary year, I ofer my deep admiration, gratitude and sincere congratulations to a most extraordinary class of graduates.

As numerous forces upended our world, you held your dreams steadily in sight and persisted in your studies through challenges none of us could have imagined. Unlike any other CSU graduating class past or future, you have by necessity developed and demonstrated skills – far beyond your academic work – that will ensure your continued success: resilience, fexibility, resourcefulness, patience and tenacity. While so much and so many have been lost, your resolve has shone as a symbol of hope and optimism – and you should be proud.

On behalf of the entire California State University community, I am certainly proud to present you to the world as our newest class of CSU alumni, joining an impressive international network now nearly 4 million strong. Together, you will power the recovery of our state and nation, educate our next generation, fght for social justice, and create new and sustainable opportunities for health, security and prosperity for us all. I encourage you to stay connected to your campus and your peers, to look for opportunities to give back, and to support the future generations who will follow in your footsteps.

And as our many months of physical separation begin to come to a close, I hope you will hold in your hearts all of those who have supported you from afar. The faculty who broadened and deepened your understanding of the world. The counselors, advisors, librarians, tutors, coaches, facilities and support staf who created a nurturing environment of care and growth. Your family and friends, whose belief in you never wavered.

THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING The College of Engineering at the California State University, Long Beach, is proud to be recognized as one of the premier Engineering Colleges in the western USA and a leader in providing high quality afordable education, in a teaching-intensive, research-driven environment. The mission of the College of Engineering is to serve the State of California and the nation by graduating well-prepared professionals, who are provided with excellent education and training in the fundamentals of their discipline through a combination of theory and hands- on laboratory practices, and who are provided with the ability and skills to expand knowledge and transform complex ideas into working systems. Research, innovation, development and technology transfer are integral part of the COE mission with a long history of engagements with diverse industries for advancement of engineering technologies.

The College of Engineering provides baccalaureate degree programs in engineering, engineering technology, and computer science. Engineering programs include aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, construction management, electrical, and mechanical. Engineering Technology programs include computer and electronics.

Master of Science degrees are ofered in aerospace, chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering, and in computer science, engineering management and interdisciplinary engineering. In addition 57 students have graduated from our joint Ph.D. program (with The Claremont Graduate University) in Engineering and Industrial Applied Mathematics (now titled Engineering and Computational Mathematics) and more than 21 students are currently enrolled in the program.

The College of Engineering provides an afordable high-quality education for students who intend to seek industrial employment, practice professionally, or pursue advanced degrees in their respective felds. Southern California industries seek out graduates of our College because of their in depth knowledge and practical experiences where they hit the ground running and repeatedly demonstrate the skills and motivation desired by industries. For example, our college is a leading supplier of graduates to major corporations such as The Boeing Company, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, utility and biomedical engineering companies. Engineering’s student enrollment, consisting of 470 graduate students (Master’s and Doctoral) and 4855 undergraduate students, is supported by about 252 full-time and part-time faculty and 52 staf members.
