University of Central Oklahoma Frequently Asked Questions about Scholarships
What different types of scholarships are available? There are a variety of different types of scholarships, available from both the College of Mathematics and Science and the UCO Foundation. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit, financial need and/or leadership. How do I qualify for merit-based scholarships? Merit-based scholarships are based on prior academic performance. Other criteria may include leadership, involvement in activities, geographical background, ethnic background, intended major, and career goals. Pay special attention to the eligibility requirements and selection criteria for each scholarship. How do I qualify for need-based scholarships? To be eligible for need-based scholarships at UCO, you must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Renewal FAFSA. For College of Mathematics and Science scholarships, you may be asked to demonstrate your financial need through a personal statement written by you and submitted with your scholarship application packet. If you are determined to have financial need, you may be eligible for some need-based scholarships. What scholarships are available to transfer students? Within the College of Mathematics and Science, transfer students are eligible for all scholarships available to returning students. Scholarships are selected in the spring semester and awarded at the beginning of the academic year (fall semester), which may make sources very limited for mid-year transfers. What scholarships are available to graduate students? Within the College of Mathematics and Science, there are a limited number of scholarships available for graduate students. Please refer to the student scholarship notebook and the scholarship details provided to review available graduate student scholarships. Graduate students may also be eligible for the College-wide Scholarships. What scholarships are available to international students? Within the College of Mathematics and Science, international students are eligible for all scholarships available to returning students unless otherwise noted in the specific scholarship’s qualifications. Scholarships are selected in the spring semester and awarded at the beginning of the academic year (fall semester). What scholarships are available to Non-resident students? Within the College of Mathematics and Science, non-resident students are eligible for all scholarships available to returning students unless otherwise noted in the specific scholarship’s qualifications. Scholarships are selected in the spring semester and awarded at the beginning of the academic year (fall semester).
When can I apply for scholarships? Prime months for applying for scholarships are November through February. Please visit the College of Mathematics and Science and the UCO Foundation websites during the semester to view and apply for scholarships that are established after timing of the printed copy of the scholarship notebook. Can I apply for more than one scholarship? YES! You will be considered for all department scholarships that you are eligible for based on the selection criteria outlined for each scholarship. However, you must complete and submit an application packet for each department’s scholarships and provide all of the required materials. Incomplete application packets will not be considered. How will I know if I am awarded a scholarship? All students who apply for a scholarship through the College of Mathematics and Science will be notified through a “Yes or No” award letter. These letters will be mailed directly to the student at the address indicated on the student scholarship application. If you move or have a change of address during the academic year, please be certain to update your information on your student banner account through the UCO Office of Admissions. It would also be advisable for you to alert the Dean’s Office of your change of address. What will my award letter tell me? For the College of Mathematics and Science, your award letter will notify you either “Yes or No” that you have been awarded a scholarship. The letter also contains information regarding the terms and conditions you must follow in order to stay qualified for the awarded scholarship, invite you to the Honors and Awards Banquet which you will be required to attend as an awarded scholarship recipient, and to whom, if anyone, you should write a thank you note for the scholarship. Typically, what are the deadlines for scholarships? Prime months for scholarship deadlines are February through April for scholarship awards beginning the following fall term. Keep in mind that many scholarships are only awarded once a year, so missing a deadline can mean missing out until the next cycle. Be certain to inform yourself of the specific deadlines for all scholarship applications. Applications submitted past the deadline will not be considered. How do I qualify for and apply for Tuition Waivers? Within the College of Mathematics and Science, tuition waivers are awarded through each Department Chair’s Office. Please visit your Department Chair’s Office to find out the deadlines and criteria for applying for tuition waivers. Where do I start? For scholarships awarded through the College of Mathematics and Science, you can use the application materials located in the front of this booklet or check out the scholarship information on the College of Mathematics and Science website at www.cms.uco.edu under the Student tab. For scholarships awarded through the UCO Foundation, please visit the Foundation website at www.ucogiving.org, under the Scholarships & Awards tab. It takes a lot of work to get scholarships, but the reward is well worth the time involved.
Do you have any tips for applying for scholarships?
Pay close attention to scholarship application deadlines. Use a calendar, make a schedule for yourself and stick to it. Applications submitted past the deadline will not be considered.
Gather application materials early – give yourself plenty of time to complete each step. Applications that have been rushed look sloppy and incomplete applications will not be accepted.
Don't ignore small awards. Even these can add up! Prepare your resume and keep it updated- this is a good way to outline your thoughts and show your
activities and achievements. Think very carefully about who should write your letters of recommendation. Choose people who can be
specific about your strengths as well as your ability to overcome your weaknesses. In your personal statements, let your personality shine through. Present your ideas in a focused,
thoughtful and meaningful manner. Write in a natural style and support your ideas with specific examples.
Proofread your applications and personal statements. Ask friends, teachers or parents for feedback. Errors or poor writing skills will have a negative effect.
Keep a copy of everything you submit! If you are notified that you have received a scholarship made possible by a specific donor, you will be
required to write a thank-you note to the donor. Be sure to thank them and show appreciation for their scholarship. Also, if appropriate, keep the donor informed of your progress.
