Welcome to the UWC Adriatic 2014-15 Annual report. It provides a selection of articles and photographs taken at some of the celebrations and cultural events of that year and acknowledges the invaluable support we have received from our alumni and friends.

The July 2015 Alumni Reunion demonstrated the lasting connections that are formed from a UWC education – between students and between the students and their college. Having such a unique location where students can explore so much about the glorious heritage of Italy – natural, architectural, historic, artistic – makes the reunion also a special opportunity for families and partners to actually see the places and people they have heard so much about!

The generosity of different individuals and institutions involved in the College in different roles – Patrons, donors, administrators, students, teachers, alumni – demonstrates their faith in the mission and values of the College.

Our continued existence is thanks to the constant and significant generosity of our Patrons, the Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Their contributions are generously augmented by scholarships from our private and corporate donors. We have also greatly benefited in recent years from the fundraising activities of UWC National Committees around the world who select our students and understand the value of a UWC Adriatic experience.

Lastly, but by no means least, we are particularly grateful to the alumni who have once again succeeded in making a substantial number of financial gifts which cannot be easy to find with all the other demands on limited personal funds. If we are to continue being able to offer a life-changing education to those who truly merit it but could never afford to pay for it for themselves the support we have been shown this year from those who understand the real value of this investment for communities, nations and indeed the world is invaluable and irreplaceable.

Alumni-giving is a hugely rewarding and confirmatory model for UWC Adriatic financial sustainability.

Benvenuti all’Annual Report 2014-15 di UWC Adriatic, che presenta una serie di articoli e immagini riguardanti i festeggiamenti ed eventi culturali dell’an-no, e che vuole rendere omaggio al sostegno dei nostri ex allievi ed amici.

La Alumni Reunion del luglio 2015 ha evidenziato il legame durevole che si instaura con un’educazione UWC – sia tra studenti, sia tra questi e il loro Collegio. La nostra straordinaria collocazione a Duino, che consente agli studenti di esplorare il meraviglioso patrimonio artistico italiano – sia pae-saggistico, sia architettonico, sia storico e artistico – rende questo evento un’opportunità speciale affinché familiari e compagni degli ex allievi pos-sano conoscere i luoghi e le persone di cui tanto hanno sentito parlare!

La generosità dei singoli e delle istituzioni legate al Collegio a vario titolo – patroni, donatori, amministratori, studenti, docenti ed ex allievi – dimostra la loro fede nella mission e nei valori del Collegio.

Continuiamo ad esistere grazie alla perdurante e significativa generosità dei nostri patroni, la Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia ed il Ministero degli Affari Esteri.

Questi contributi vengono generosamente integrati dalle borse di stu-dio erogate dai nostri donatori privati e aziendali. In anni recenti abbiamo anche beneficiato dalle attività di fundraising delle Commissioni Nazionali UWC di tutto il mondo, le quali selezionano i nostri studenti e comprendono il valore di un’esperienza presso UWC Adriatic.

Infine, ma non da ultimo, siamo particolarmente grati agli ex allievi che sono riusciti ancora una volta a donare generosamente al Collegio – cosa non facile con tutti gli impegni cui si deve fare fronte. Se dobbiamo conti-nuare a offrire un’istruzione trasformativa a coloro che la meritano ma che non potrebbero mai sostenerne i costi, il contributo ricevuto quest’anno da quanti conoscono di prima mano il valore di un simile investimento per le comunità, i paesi e il mondo tutto, è assolutamente indispensabile e insostituibile.

Le donazioni degli ex allievi rappresentano un modello fortemente pre-miante e un valido riscontro per la sostenibilità finanziaria di UWC Adriatic.

From its inception the United World College of the Adriatic has aimed at making education a force to unite people, nations and cultures, thereby contributing to disseminating peace and promoting a sustainable future. The values upheld by the College – international and intercultural understanding, the celebration of difference, accountability and mutual respect – also are the cornerstones of a frontier region like Friuli Venezia Giulia, whose vocation is to build bridges to bring together people, languages and identities.

It is all the more essential that this “mission” be embodied by the young community of students – selected on merit alone for the purpose of promoting peace and international cooperation – that every year reaches Duino: a small community that has a lot to learn and also to teach. Indeed, the College is a model for the values of coexistence and celebration of difference that are so crucial in a European continent that is confronted daily with the issue of hospitality.

The Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia is thus proud to have supported from the outset – in 1982 – the educational and didactic endeavours of the United World College of the Adriatic, which can claim to have a number of distinguished alumni, of which the latest example is Chrystia Freeland - recently appointed Minister of International Trade in Canada. The College’s heritage tangibly contributes to making Friuli Venezia Giulia a most “special” place.

Dalla sua fondazione il Collegio del Mondo Unito ha come obiettivo fare dell’educazione una forza per unire i popoli, le nazioni e le culture contribuendo così alla diffusione della pace e alla costruzione di un futuro sostenibile. I valori che da sempre promuove - comprensione internazionale e interculturale, celebrazione della differenza, respon-sabilità e rispetto comuni – sono cardine anche per una regione di confine come il Friuli Venezia Giulia, la cui vocazione è essere ponte tra genti, lingue, identità.

È ancora più importante che questa “missione” venga incarnata dalla giovane comunità di studenti – selezionati unicamente sulla base del merito, con lo scopo promuovere la pace a la cooperazione internazio-nale – e che popola ogni anno il villaggio di Duino: un piccolo mondo che tanto ha da imparare, ma tanto ha anche da insegnare: è infatti un modello di convivenza, di valorizzazione della diversità, che è lezione quanto mai importante in un’Europa che viene interpellata ogni giorno sul tema dell’accoglienza.

La Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia è dunque orgogliosa di sostenere dalla sua fondazione, nel 1982, l’opera educativa e didattica del Colle-gio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico, che vanta tra i suoi ex allievi figure di spicco – per ultima Chrystia Freeland, nominata recentemente mi-nistro canadese del Commercio internazionale. È un patrimonio che rende concretamente “speciale” il Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Admissions Policy

UWC Mission Statement

Admission to the United World Colleges is on the fundamental criteria of merit and potential. Over 150 National Commissions around the world select candidates who are then admitted to the Colleges based on the students’ ranking and the availability of scholarships, as well as on the preference expressed by the candidates. The scholarships are awarded after a process of “means testing” to ascertain the student’s financial needs in terms of a full or partial scholarship. The ideal candidate combines a sound academic ability with an open mind, a tolerant attitude and understanding of other opinions and attitudes. Given the likelihood of students being far from home and the particularly demanding academic programme, candidates must be in good physical and psychological health.

Selections normally involve both formal interviews and group activities aimed at evaluating the youngsters’ approach and motivation. Italian applicants must be attending the third grade in high school for the first time and must, in normal circumstances, be 16 when starting their two years at a College. Thirty-eight students have been selected to attend a United World College this year, from the following Italian Regions: Basilicata, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Lombardy, Piedmont, Puglia, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Veneto. All 15 United World Colleges have Italian students attending.

L’ accesso ai Collegi del Mondo Unito si basa sui criteri imprescindibili del merito e delle potenzialità dello studente. In tutto il mondo, oltre 150 Commissioni Nazionali selezionano i candidati che poi vengono am-messi ai Collegi, secondo l’ordine di merito della classifica, in base alle borse di studio disponibili e anche tenendo conto delle preferenze espresse dallo studente. L’erogazione delle borse di studio avviene a segui-to di un processo detto “means testing”, grazie al quale si verifica l’effettiva necessità economica dello stu-dente idoneo a ricevere una borsa di studio, completa o parziale. Il candidato ideale unisce una spiccata capacità in campo accademico all’apertura mentale, alla tolleranza e alla comprensione per opinioni e atteg-giamenti diversi dai propri. Inoltre, vista la probabile lontananza dall’ambiente familiare e l’impegno parti-colare richiesto dai programmi scolastici e dalle attività extra accademiche, deve possedere un buono stato di salute psicofisica.

Le selezioni di norma alternano colloqui formali ad attività di gruppo, volte a verificare le attitudini e le moti-vazioni dei ragazzi. In Italia, la partecipazione ai Collegi del Mondo Unito è riservata agli studenti italiani che frequentano per la prima volta il terzo anno di un istituto di istruzione secondaria superiore e che, di norma, abbiano compiuto i 16 anni di età al momento di iniziare il biennio al Collegio. I vincitori del processo di sele-zione, per il biennio in corso, sono 38, provenienti dalle seguenti regioni d’Italia: Basilicata, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Lombardia, Piemonte, Puglia, Sardegna, Sicilia, Toscana, Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto. Essi stanno attualmente frequentando tutti e 15 i Collegi del Mondo Unito.

In tutti i Collegi del Mondo Unito, il cui corso di studi copre gli ultimi due anni di scuola secondaria supe-riore prima dell’università, gli studenti conseguono il Diploma del Baccellierato Internazionale (IB Di-ploma). Per gli studenti italiani è importante sapere che il Diploma IB è riconosciuto ed equiparato ai diplomi della scuola secondaria di secondo grado ai sensi della Legge 30 ottobre 1986 n.738 (“Riconoscimento del diploma di Baccellierato Inter-nazionale”, pubblicata nella Gazzetta Ufficiale n.258 del 6 novembre 1986). Tale diploma è riconosciuto anche dalle principali istituzioni universitarie nel mondo.

Il piano di studi, definito su base individuale, prevede lo studio di sei materie selezionate da almeno cinque delle sei aree di raggruppamento IB (tra lingue, matematica, scienze naturali, scienze sociali, arte, storia e filosofia). Almeno tre materie sono studiate a livello superiore (HL) e le altre a livel-lo standard (SL).

È comunque obbligatorio: • seguire un corso interdisciplinare di Teoria della

Conoscenza;

• presentare una tesina in una delle materie studiate;

• intraprendere un’attività extra-accademica di servizio sociale;

• praticare con impegno un’attività sportiva; • dedicarsi ad un’attività di tipo artistico-creativo.

La lingua di insegnamento nei Collegi è l’inglese, con l’eccezione di alcune classi di lingua e letteratura. I Collegi, solitamente, forniscono un sostegno iniziale per l’apprendimento della lingua inglese durante o in preparazione dei due anni del programma accademico. Il corpo docente è reclutato su base internazio-nale per assicurare il più ampio ventaglio di meto-dologie e prospettive didattiche, come previsto dalle finalità pedagogiche del Baccellierato Internazionale.

Il Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico O.N.L.U.S. (UWC Adriatic) ospita anche la sede dell’International Chamber Music Academy – Duino. Gli studenti am-messi al Collegio con un particolare talento e adeguata preparazione musicale, potranno essere ammessi alla frequenza gratuita dei corsi dell’International Cham-ber Music Academy – Duino, previa selezione da parte della Direzione Artistica della stessa.

All United World Colleges, whose courses cover the last two years of high school before university, follow the IB Diploma (International Baccalaureate).

Italian students should know that the IB Diploma is officially recognized in Italy and equivalent to the Italian State Diploma, as per Law n. 738 dated 30th October 1986 (“Riconoscimento del diploma di Baccellierato Internazionale”, published in the Gaz-zetta Ufficiale n.258 dated 6th November 1986). This diploma is also recognized by the main universi-ties in the world.

Students choose their own syllabus of six subjects, chosen from at least five of the six IB areas (languages, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, art, history, and philosophy). At least three subjects are studied at high level (HL) and the others at standard level (SL).

It is obligatory to:

• follow an interdisciplinary course on Theory of Knowledge;

• prepare a dissertation on one of the subjects;• carry out an extra-curricular activity of community

service;• participate in a physical activity;• be involved in an artistic-creative activity.

Subjects are taught in English, with the exception of some language and literature classes. Colleges nor-mally provide initial help in learning English during, or in preparation for the two years.

Faculty are recruited internationally to ensure a broad range of teaching methodologies and perspectives, in keeping with the pedagogical objectives of the International Baccalaureate.

UWC Adriatic (Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adria-tico O.N.L.U.S.) hosts the International Chamber Music Academy on its premises in Duino.

Students attending the College who show particular musical talent and have appropriate training may also attend courses at the International Chamber Music Academy free of charge, subject to selection by the Academy’s Artistic Director.Spanish class

Il Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico Onlus ha adottato Il programma del Diploma del Baccelliera-to Internazionale sin dalla sua fondazione nel 1983. Il punteggio massimo è 45, con la soglia di “promosso” fissata a 24 punti.

Gli studenti scelgono sei materie accademiche, tre a livello superiore (HL) e tre a livello standard (SL). Inol-tre, ciascun studente segue un corso interdisciplinare di Teoria della Conoscenza, scrive una tesina, e par-tecipa con impegno in attività creative, sportive e di servizio sociale. Servono risultati positivi in tutti questi campi per ottenere il Diploma IB.

I diplomati del 2015 hanno ottenuto eccellenti risulta-ti complessivamente, con un punteggio medio di 35,6 e con il 90% di candidati promossi. I risultati variano di anno in anno, ma sono in genere positivi e di molto superiori alla media mondiale, come illustrato nella Tabella qui sotto.

I risultati conseguiti dal Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico sono particolarmente significativi quan-do si tiene conto che molti studenti studiano la lingua italiana in aggiunta alle loro sei materie del Diploma IB.

UWC Adriatic has taught the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme since its foundation in 1983. In the IB Diploma, the “top score” is 45 points, with 24 points being a “passing” score.

Students study six academic subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. In addition, each student completes the Theory of Knowledge course, writes an Extended Essay and engages in extensive Creative, Physical and Social Service activities. All components need to be satisfactorily completed, in order to obtain the IB Diploma.

The graduating class of 2015 performed very well overall, with an average score of 35.6 points and a pass rate of 90%. Results fluctuate from year to year, but are generally strong and well above the world average, as shown in the Table below.

UWC Adriatic’s results are particularly impressive when taking into account that many students study Italian in addition to their six IB Diploma subjects.

For the sixth consecutive year, UWC Adriatic organised the University Fair, hosting fifteen US and Canadian Universities and Colleges.

During the two-day programme, university admission officers gave presentations on what their institutions can offer our students, illustrating all of the scholarship opportunities. The presentations were followed by individual interviews and meetings with students who had the chance to ask more specific questions and present themselves in what is often part of the selection process.

The University fair is just part of UWC Adriatic’s extensive visits schedule: over forty US, European and UK Universities join us in Duino every year.

Per il sesto anno consecutivo, UWC Adriatic ha tenuto la University Fair, evento in cui 15 Università e College statunitensi e canadesi vengono ospitati al Collegio. Il programma, articolato su due giornate, prevede le presentazioni a cura dei responsabili delle iscrizioni universitarie su quanto le loro istituzioni hanno da offrire ai nostri studenti, illustrando anche tutte le borse di studio disponibili. A seguire, colloqui individuali per tutti gli studenti interessati, durante i quali i nostri allievi possono fare domande più puntuali e presentare se stessi, in un momento che rientra a tutti gli effetti nella procedura di selezione.

SEED Ungheria 2015 SEED Hungary 2015Il Progetto SEED (Student Engagement Education for

Development) è un progetto lanciato nel 2009 da otto studenti da UWC Adriatic, al fine di sviluppare opportunità per gli studenti di impegnarsi con i giovani provenienti da tutto il mondo e garantire pari opportunità di istruzione, sostenendo il loro sviluppo personale e comune.

Il progetto è stato rilanciato questa estate grazie a Ramo-na Gyorfi, una studentessa ungherese, molto motivata ed entusiasta, la cui borsa di studio è offerta dalla Fondazio-ne Velux. Ramona viene da Magyarbánhegyes, una delle aree più povere del paese.

Ramona ha dunque unito le forze con altri sei studenti (Maxim dall’Uganda, Brunella dall’Italia, Natalia dalla Po-lonia, Chloe da Hong Kong, Alicia dagli Stati Uniti e Bor-bala dall’Ungheria ma con borsa di studio francese) e ha organizzato un’attività estiva per un gruppo di bambini svantaggiati nel suo villaggio natale.

Il progetto, sostenuto dagli Alumni ungheresi e da spon-sor locali, prevedeva un soggiorno di due settimane in Magyarbánhegyes, dove il team di 7 studenti UWC Adria-tic ha offerto un programma giornaliero (di 6 ore) di gio-chi educativi, tra cui giochi tradizionali per bambini come “sedie musicali” ed altri, con un format leggermente mo-dificato. Per i bambini, l’obiettivo era prendere coscienza dell’importanza di condividere informazioni e collaborare attraverso giochi divertenti. Ramona e suoi compagni di studio anche insegnato ai bambini a contare in inglese e hanno anche fatto giochi di matematica con loro. Le due settimane si sono concluse con uno spettacolo multicul-turale preparato dai bambini stessi.

Ramona ora giura che questo è solo il primo di una serie di progetti di volontariato che sta progettando di intra-prendere in futuro, come ad esempio una borsa di studio per 15 giovani in Ungheria, che avranno la possibilità di partecipare a tre diversi tipi di viaggio, in funzione dei loro risultati scolastici, concentrandosi non sui voti in quanto tali, ma sulla misurazione del progresso fatto dai bambini nel corso dell’anno.

Il suono delle risate dei bambini risuona ancora nelle sue orecchie e non dimenticherà mai come i bambini pian-gevano dopo lo spettacolo era finito, quando essi hanno capito che il progetto era finito.

Student Engagement Education for Development (SEED) is a project launched in 2009 by eight students from UWC Adriatic to develop opportunities for students to engage with young people from all around the world, in order to ensure equal educational opportunities and support their personal as well as communal development.

The project was resumed this summer thanks to Ramona Gyorfi, a highly motivated and enthusiastic Hungarian student whose scholarship is supported by the Velux Foundation. Ramona comes from Magyarbanhegyes, one of the poorest areas in the country.

Ramona joined forces with six other students (Maxim from Uganda, Brunella from Italy, Natalia from Poland, Chloe from Hong Kong, Alicia from the US and Borbala from Hungary but on a French scholarship) and organised a summer activity for a group of disadvantaged children in her home village.

The project, supported by Hungarian Alumni local sponsors, envisaged a two-week stay in Magyarbanhegyes, where the 7-strong UWC Adriatic students team offered a 6-hour-a-day programme of educational games, including traditional children’s games like “musical chairs” and others in a slightly modified format. The purpose was for the children to become aware of the importance of sharing and cooperating through fun games and play. Ramona and her fellow students also taught the kids how to count in English and played numbers games with them. The two weeks ended with a multicultural show prepared by the children themselves.

Ramona now vows this is just the first of a series of volunteering projects she is planning to undertake in the future, such as a scholarship for 15 youngsters in Hungary who will have the chance to take part in three different trips according to their school results, focusing not on marks as such but on the amount of progress they make throughout the year.

The sound of children’s laughter still rings in her ears and she will never forget how the children cried after the show was over, when it dawned on them that it marked the end of the project.

Peace One Day - UWC DayIl 21 settembre 2014 ha visto un’edizione molto speciale delle consuete celebrazioni del UWC Day organizzate

dal Collegio. Prima del tradizionale Peace One Day Show, gli studenti di Duino hanno visitato a Trieste la Risiera di San Sabba: dichiarato monumento nazionale nel 1965, è stato un campo di prigionia nazista ai tempi della Seconda Guerra Mondiale deputato allo smistamento dei deportati diretti in Germania e Polonia, un deposito dei beni razziat e un luogo di detenzione ed eliminazione di ostaggi, partigiani, detenuti politici ed ebrei. Gli studenti, in gruppi, sono poi stati ospitati a pranzo da varie associazioni, parrocchie e dalla Comunità Islamica triestina. Al pomeriggio si sono riuniti in Piazza Sant’Antonio, luogo centralissimo che si affaccia sul Canale di Ponte Rosso, dove il Peace One Day Show ancora una volta ha incantato i triestini e turisti di passaggio.

21st September 2014 marked a very special edition of UWC Adriatic’s traditional UWC Day celebrations. Before the traditional, must-see Peace One Day Show, students visited Trieste’s Risiera di San Sabba. A National Monument since 1965, it was formerly a Nazi prison camp where deported prisoners were sorted to be sent to Germany and Poland, a wharehouse for raided goods and a prison and an extermination camp for hostages, partisans, political and Jewish prisoners. Students were then organised into groups and had lunch with a number of associations, parishes and the local Islamic Community. In the afternoon they reunited in Piazza Sant’Antonio, a central square overlooking Trieste’s Ponte Rosso Canal, where the Peace One Day Show renewed the magic spell it never fails to cast on passers-by.

Ma è invece un uccello che cerca di diffondere il proprio messaggio: PACE! La religione ha illuminato la mente degli uomini re li ha fatti uscire dalle buie caverne in cui vivevano. Oggi sembra essere diventata lei stessa una buia caverna, nella quale nessuno vuole più avventurarsi. L’uccello gentile piange, sperando che le sue lacrime bastino a estinguere le fiamme create dai mostri nel mondo.

Finché questi mostri esisteranno, ci sarà anche que-sto uccello che vola e piange così che le sue lacrime possano essere d’aiuto. Non mi interessa cosa dicono gli altri. Non mi interessa cosa pensano, io questo uccello lo vedo, mi appartiene e lo amo! Si chiama Islam; si chiama Cristianesimo; si chiama Buddismo; si chiama Induismo; si chiama religione! Domenica 24 Maggio 2015, il Presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella ha fatto visita al Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico onlus e all’Accademia di Musica da Camera – International Chamber Music Academy per ricordare e rendere omaggio all’amico Corrado Belci, padre fondatore di queste due istitu-zioni. Alla Sua memoria è stato dedicato l’Auditorium del Collegio, in cui il Presidente Mattarella ha salu-tato gli studenti e docenti, per poi intrattenersi con la famiglia Belci e con alcuni ragazzi.

On Sunday 24th May 2015, Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic visited our College and the International Chamber Music Academy to remember and honour the memory of his friend Corrado Belci, founding president of both UWC Adriatic and the International Chamber Music Academy. On that occasion, the College Auditorium was dedicated to Belci’s memory and the President delivered an address before students and teachers, follwed by an encounter with the Belci family and some students.

A un anno di distanza dalla loro visita al Collegio, Shelby Davis e sua moglie Gale hanno istituito un programma per tutti i Collegi del Mondo Unito, mettendo a disposizione un milione di dollari per ogni Collegio, come fondo che raddoppia le donazioni di ex studenti, famiglie e amici.Il programma intende aumentare le donazioni da parte della comunità UWC: infatti, il raddoppio delle donazioni si innesca con l’aumento del numero di donatori di anno in anno. One year after visiting the College, Shelby Davis and his wife Gale have set up a programme for all the United World Colleges, under which one million dollars are at the disposal of each College as a matching fund to double donations from alumni, families and friends.The programme aims to increase donations from the UWC community; in fact, the matching mechanism is triggered by the increase in the number of donors from year to year. A generous gesture which demonstrates the strength of the bond that is created between the UWC movement and its alumni, their families and whoever comes into contact with the United World Colleges.

Booking.com and “Premio alla Bontà Marie Haze Cole”L’ex allievo Darren Huston (ADC 83-85), Amministratore Delegato di The Priceline Group (Booking.com), ha visitato il Colle-gio ad aprile 2015 e ha tenuto una lezione per gli studenti. Da questa visita è nato il progetto “Borsa di Studio Booking.com”, che si basa sulle prenotazioni fatte da ex-alunni, personale e studenti tramite Booking.com: maggiore è la prenotazio-ne, maggiore è il valore della donazione! Quando l’importo delle donazioni raggiun-ge il valore di una borsa di studio, questa viene assegnata a uno studente come “borsa di studio Booking.com”.

Alumnus Darren Huston (ADC 83-85), CEO of The Priceline Group (Booking.com), visited the College in April 2015 and held a lecture for the current students. This visit gave rise to the “Booking.com Scholarship”, based on bookings made by alumni, staff and students through Booking.com: the greater the value of the bookings, the higher the grant! When the grant amount reaches the value of a scholarship it is allocated to a student as a “Booking.com Scholarship”.

Come nei 14 anni precedenti, 12 allievi bisognosi del Collegio hanno beneficiato del generoso contributo istituito dal Pre-mio alla Bontà Marie Haze Cole ONLUS. Il premio è stato loro consegnato perso-nalmente dal vedovo di Marie, dott. Aldo Pianciamore e dalla Presidente, Marchesa Etta Carignani.

For the 15th consecutive year 12 needy College students received a generous pocket money gift from Premio alla Bontà Marie Haze Cole ONLUS. The students received the prize from the hands of Marie’s widower, dott. Aldo Pianciamore and from the President, Marchesa Etta Carignani.

Facts on College DevelopmentFondazione per i Collegi del Mondo Unito Stock Weinberg - Edward Sutcliffe O.N.L.U.S.

L’iniziativa nasce da un incontro, anzi, da incontri di persone con storie diverse ed un ideale comune. Lilia-na Stock Weinberg aveva costituito una fondazione per gli studi sulla coesistenza tra i popoli, e da tempo offriva una borsa di studio per uno studente palestinese e uno israeliano, per il Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico.

David ed Elisabeth Sutcliffe avevano conosciuto la costiera triestina negli anni ’60, durante il loro viag-gio di nozze in Italia, e vent’anni dopo si erano trasferiti a Duino per fondare il Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico. La tragica scomparsa del loro ultimogenito Edward, già studente del Collegio, diede il via alla creazione di un fondo per borse di studio in sua memoria. Ultimamente, David ed Elisabeth avevano espresso il desiderio di donare al movimento in Italia la loro casa di montagna in Italia, a rafforzare ulteriormente il loro legame con il Collegio di Duino ed il movimento dei Collegi del Mondo Unito.

La Fondazione, che porta il nome Stock Weinberg-Edward Sutcliffe, è stata istituita con atto notarile il 17 aprile 2015, ha ottenuto lo status di ONLUS il 12 giugno successivo e la personalità giuridica il 26 luglio 2015. Al patrimonio iniziale della Fondazione sono stati conferiti il fondo Edward Sutcliffe, da parte del Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico O.N.L.U.S., il patrimonio residuo della Fondazione Stock Weinberg, e la proprietà immobiliare di David ed Elisabeth Sutcliffe a Sauris, in Italia. Lo scopo statutario della Fondazione è la raccolta di fondi per l’erogazione di borse di studio. Il Presidente è Filippo Nicolis di Robilant, che ha frequentato il Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Atlantico nel biennio 1975/77.

Facts on College DevelopmentThe “Fondazione per i Collegi del Mondo Unito Stock Weinberg - Edward Sutcliffe O.N.L.U.S.”

This initiative was born from an encounter, or rather a series of encounters with people with different histories but sharing the same ideal. Liliana Stock Weinberg had set up a foundation for the study of coexistence among peoples, and had for some time provided a scholarship for a Palestinian and Israeli student to attend the United World College in Duino.

David and Elisabeth Sutcliffe first discovered the coastal area of Trieste in the 60’s during their honeymoon in Italy and twenty years later they moved to Duino to found the United World College of the Adriatic. The tragic loss of their youngest son, Edward, a student at the College, gave birth to an endowment fund in his memory. Of late, David and Elisabeth had expressed the desire to donate their house in the mountains to the movement, to further reinforce their ties with the College in Duino and with the UWC movement.The Foundation, named Stock Weinberg-Edward Sutcliffe, was established by notarial act on 17th April 2015, was given ONLUS (Charity) status on 12th June, and granted legal personality on 26th July 2015.The Foundation’s initial assets consist of the Edward Sutcliffe Endowment fund conferred by the Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico O.N.L.U.S., the residual assets of the Fondazione Stock Weinberg, and the real estate of David and Elisabeth Sutcliffe in Sauris, Italy. The statutory purpose of the Foundation is to raise funds to disburse scholarships. The president is Filippo Nicolis di Robilant, an alumnus of the United World College of the Atlantic, class 1977.

The United World Colleges depend on the generosity of individuals, companies, foundations and governmental institutions. Without their support, it would not be possible to provide the experience that thousands of students live in the Colleges each year. Fundraising CampaignsAnnual Fund ChallengeÈ il programma di donazioni del Collegio per creare borse di studio e rappresenta il principale motore per garantire l’unicità dei Collegi del Mondo Unito. Ogni donazione all’Annual Fund superiore ai 1.000 Euro viene raddoppiata da un comitato di Alumni. Le donazioni all’Annual Fund partecipano anche al program-ma Davis-UWC Impact.

Italian ChallengeAll’interno dell’Annual Fund, la campagna per le borse di studio italiane è una tradizione consolidata. È dedicata alla raccolta di fondi per offrire borse di studio a ragazzi e ragazze italiane, per tutti i Collegi del Mondo Unito. Un anonimo donatore triplica le donazioni fatte per questa campagna. Le donazioni per la Italian Campaign partecipano anche al programma Davis-UWC Impact.

Reunion CampaignIn occasione della riunione annuale degli ex-studenti, che festeggiano il trentennale dal diploma insieme con generazioni più giovani (10-15-25), viene lanciata una campagna di raccolta fondi per offrire borse di studio. Un comitato di donatori tra gli ex-studenti raddoppia le donazioni fatte in occasione della riunione. Le donazioni per la Reunion Campaign partecipano al programma Davis-UWC Impact.

Annual Fund ChallengeThe Annual Fund is the College’s fundraising programme to finance scholarships and is the main driving force to ensure the uniqueness of the United World Colleges. Each donation to the Annual Fund of 1,000 Euro or more is doubled by a matching committee of alumni. Donations to the Annual Fund are eligible under the Davis-UWC Impact programme.

Italian ChallengeWithin the Annual Fund, the Italian Challenge is now a consolidated tradition. It is dedicated to raising fun-ds for scholarships for Italian students to attend any of the United World Colleges. An anonymous donor triples the donations made under this campaign. Donations to the Italian Challenge are eligible under the Davis-UWC Impact programme.

Reunion CampaignReunion Campaign. A fund raising campaign is associated with the Annual Reunion of alumni celebrating their 30th graduation anniversary, together with the younger generations (10-15-25 years), to finance scholarships. A committee of alumni donors match the donations made on this occasion. Donations to the Reunion Campaign are eligible under the Davis-UWC Impact programme.
