CATCH - UP “The Finest Quality Frozen At Sea Fish” Autumn 2015 EVERYTHING IS GOING SWIMMINGLY FOR OUR EXPECTANT MUMS! There must be something in the water – besides fish! – at Collins Seafoods. Two team members, Operations Director, Claire Carter, and Wraggs Sales Administrator, Emma Haggie, are currently pregnant. We caught up with the busy, expectant mums to chat about what it’s like to be working at Collins and Wraggs while pregnant and how our fish play a role in their diets and those of their babies. The mums are certainly appreciating the VIP treatment they get from the rest of the Collins/ Wraggs family. So much so, that both have the same advice for fellow working pregnant mums: welcome the spoiling from your co-workers! Of course, Claire and Emma have been enjoying seafood during their respective pregnancies, with Claire treating herself to fish & chips every Friday. Emma loves Collins Frozen at Sea Cod and finds it hard to resist a trip to the chippy every night, especially working in a business that talks fish all day. However, she somehow manages to maintain a balanced diet! No crazy cravings here, just a tendency towards fizzy drinks – Diet Coke is Claire’s choice, while Emma goes for lemonade. Despite all the healthy Cod she’s been munching on, Emma has not completely avoided pregnancy brain, she said: “During one of my scans I was tell- ing the lady that I would hate to work in a dark room all day. “A few minutes later she asked me if I had windows where I worked and I answered yes but wasn’t sure if it was Vista or XP. I had completely forgotten the conversation we just had.” It also appears to be true that pregnancy has an effect on dreams. Emma had a dream featuring a dog in heels, while Claire’s might be even weirder – she would not divulge exactly what her dreams entailed! These crazy dreams do not appear to be keeping the ladies up at night – they have enjoyed working throughout their pregnancy with few complaints (besides Emma’s chippy temptation mentioned above!) Claire said: “It’s easier sitting at my desk all day than running around after my one year old when I am off work! Or maybe trying to find an outfit to fit into.” Claire is soon to be a mum of two under two’s – she returned from maternity leave in February after welcoming daughter Thea last year. Little Thea is already a fan of fish, thanks to her mum introducing her to a variety of foods from early on. Emma has a similar philosophy when it comes to food, finding a well-balanced diet important (including the occasional treats, of course). With both mums playing such vital roles in the company and enjoying eating regular amounts of fish during their pregnancies, it’s safe to say the new babies will also be fish fans in no time! Issue 6

Wraggs on the road: a day in the life of a driverWe all know that the journey of getting our fish from sea to dish is made possible thanks to several roles filled by hard-working people. Clocking hundreds of miles on the road every day are our Wraggs drivers, who deliver our Frozen at Sea fish throughout Yorkshire and the East Midlands. While each day consists of delivering seafood to wholesalers and fish and chip shops, the routes and stops vary. Neil, who joined the company 11 months ago, said he covers up to 200 miles and makes as many as 20 stops in just one day! The job starts early in the morn-ing, which Neil likes, as it means finishing mid-afternoon, which allows him to relax at home on the evening, after a day on the road. Monday mornings can be a bit unpleasant because they mean venturing into the freezer which has been shut all weekend – brrr! Spending most of the day driving around may seem a bit monotonous, but our drivers get to enjoy the sights, such as the beautiful English countryside – which we bet beats the office walls! Neil particularly likes the views of Lincoln and the surrounding area.In addition to the sights, along the

daily journeys our drivers encounter all sorts of different environments and personalities – no two chippies are exactly the same! Neil thinks Old Road Fisheries in Bradford must be the smallest fish and chip shop he’s ever seen. He said world-traveling Dave at Chippy Wood in Wakefield has been a memorable person to meet!

For the most part, delivering for Wraggs is smooth sailing – well, driving – for Neil, who will have been with us for a year in October. We are grateful to all our drivers for helping us to stay true to our delivery guarantee and I’m sure when you’re tucking into your delicious portion of fish and chips, you are too!

F ish is best for mums to be

At Collins Seafoods, we understand that during pregnancy it can be difficult to maintain a balanced diet. Giving into cravings such as chocolate, fish and chips (of course), crisps and other types of comfort food is often a lot easier than eating healthily!

While it may seem easier said than done, the crucial thing for mums to be to remember is whatever you’re eating, your baby is eating too. Your baby is depending on you entirely – no pressure! – to provide the correct nutrients to help them grow.

The good news is that fish, especially Collins’ high quality Frozen at Sea fish, can be really good for both you and your baby. Obviously we already knew that but thought we’d tell you why:

There are so many reasons we love Cod! Not only is it delicious, but it is loaded with protein, which is essential to your health. Cod also provides types of fat that are good for you, lowering cholesterol levels and risk of disease. Pregnancy can be tiring, new mums need all the energy they can get. Cod is the perfect fish for mums who need a boost, as it is full of nutrients which help convert food into energy.

Oily fish is brilliant for the brain, literally. Omega-3 oils found in Salmon, mackerel and sardines are vital for human biological functions, specifically brain development. Health experts recommend that mums to be should be munching on at least two portions of fish a week, ideally rich in oils.

If you crave tuna, try not go overboard. During your pregnancy, you should avoid having more than four cans a week, because tuna contains more mercury than other fish, which could affect your baby’s developing nervous system.

Other types of seafood can be a source of essential nutrients as well. Iron, found in shellfish, crayfish, cockles and mussels also play a vital role intransporting oxygen around the body and producing energy which will can reduce tiredness and fatigue.

But you’ve Cod to be joking if you think we expect expecting mums to be good all the time. Everyone needs a break now and again so a few portions of chips - with some of Collins Seafoods tasty Frozen at Sea fish won’t hurt - we promise we won’t tell anyone!
