COLOMBIA BIRDS TRIP REPORT

Introduction Since my first travel in South America, I was more and more attracted by the Neotropic. In this

biogeographical region, I traveled in Peru, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Costa Rica, but I really

fell in love with Colombia for its impressive bird diversity, for its amazing and various landscapes,

but mainly for its friendly and welcoming inhabitants. I never felt unsecured and I enjoyed my two

trips there. I travel twice in Colombia, once from December 31, 2015 to February 17, 2016 and

another from April 4 to May 17, 2017.

For my first trip, I left alone from Geneva to Bogotá (via Madrid;

Iberia). I spent a crazy New Year in the capital and I stayed there for

a few days. Then I took a plane (Satena) to Mitú where I spent a small

week. Back in Bagotá, I rented a care (Budget Rental Car) and visited

a big part of the Central Andes. When I gave back my car in Bogotá,

I took a night bus to Santa Marta (Berlinas) where I explored the

surroundings by public transport. I went back to Bogotá by plane

(Avianca).

For my second trip, I flew from Basel-Mulhouse to Bogotáwith

my girlfriend Nina (via Amsterdam and Paris for the return;

KLM-Air France). After a small stay in the capital, we took a

night bus to Santa Marta. We also explored the surroundings

with public transport. We took a bus to Cartagena and then

after few days there, we took a night bus to Medellín. From

there we flew to Bahia Solano (Satena). We stayed a short week

in El Valle. When we came back we rented a car (Triple A

Solutions) and we drove through the Central Andes to the far

South. Back in Medellín we flew to Leticia (via Bogotá;

Avianca). We stayed few days in Amazonia before flying back

to Bogotá.

I mostly birded without guide (except where it was necessary). All together this corresponds to

about 7 days accompanied by a guide.

Incredible Colombia During the two trips, I encountered 976 bird species in Colombia, including 60 endemics and 88

near-endemics, as well as 39 threatened ones (22 VU, 14 EN and 3 CR). I noticed 115 species of

thraupidae, 112 of tyrannidae and 91 of trochilidae. I observed 73 North American migratory

species included 15 parulidae.

Accidental visitor species for the country including: Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus), Mangrove

Swallow (Tachycineta albilinea) and Blue-winged Warbler (Vermivora cyanoptera)!

Main visited sites In the field and to prepare my trips, I mainly used the “Birdwatching in Colombia” (Jurgen Beckers &

Pablo Florez) and additional information from internet. Some of my favorite accommodations are

followed by (+).

Several good birding sites are present directly in the town or in the surrounding area.

S Botanical Garden 04°40'4.49"N, 74°05'52.56"W 2’555 m

The botanical garden is a good start for birding in the capital. A good spot for the near-

endemic Rufous-browed Conebill.

S Parque La Florida 04°43'47.62"N, 74°09'0.25"W 2'545 m

The park around the lake seems to be generally closed but I found one person who opened

it just for me. The lake was a good place to look for waterfowls; among the numerous

Andean Ducks, Blue-winged Teals and American Coot, I observed >10 Lesser Scaups and

1 Masked Duck. Also some Spot-flanked Gallinules from the endemic subspecies.

S Humedal Jaboque 04°43'20.65"N, 74°08'43.97"W 2'540 m

It seems to be a good spot for the endemic and endangered Bogota Rail; 1 heard a few birds

and I saw one in the Northern part of the wetland (near the canal) hidden under some

branches.

S Parque Santa María del Lago 04°41'41.15"N, 74°05'40.06"W 2'550 m

I haven’t read much about this spot before. I was looking for some good city parks to

birdwatch and I found it by exploring a map of the capital. During my two visits in 2016 and

2017 the place was pretty good for migratory birds like Northern Waterthrush on January,

2016 or Western Wood Pewee on April, 2017. I also observed the near-endemic Rufous-

browed Conebill. The park open rather early in the morning (6:00 am) and it is really quiet.

S Parque Simón Bolívar 04°39'32.25"N, 74°05'44.51"W 2'555 m

This urban park is a very good place in Bogotá for migratory passerines (Eastern Wood

Pewee, Great Crested Flycatcher, Tennessee Warbler, American Redstart, Blackburnian

Warbler, American Yellow Warbler, Summer and Scarlet Tanager). The Northeastern part

seems to be the best to look for them (04°39'41.70"N, 74°05'44.37"W). Avoid the Sunday to

watch the birds as the park is full of people (despite the fact it is difficult to search the birds,

the vibe is just fantastic).

S Monserrate 04°36'19.54"N, 74°03'19.39"W 3’130-3'170 m

This place is also good if you are travelling with non-birdwatchers as the view of the capital

and its surrounding is impressive. The site is nice for the hummingbirds and Brushfinches.

On January 2016, I saw there a near-endemic Blue-throated Starfrontlet. Regularly observed

hummers included Black-tailed Trainbearer, Shining Sunbeam, Tyrian Metaltail and

Sword-billed Hummingbird (a good place for the last one is below on the left when you

leave the cable car: 4°36'18.5"N, 74°03'20.9"W).

S Quebrada La Vieja 04°38'39.80"N, 74°02'35.57"W 2’720-2'970 m

This path go up across the mountain forest. The site is open only in the morning and is

secured by the police. Perfect for a small walk.

R Jardín encantado (San Francisco) 4°58'43.2"N, 74°17'37.1"W 1’450 m The private garden in San Francisco known as Jardín encantado is amazing for hummingbirds.

Among the 9 species observed during my visit in 2016, I observed 2 endemic species Gorgeted

Woodstar and Indigo-capped Hummingbird; the last one was very common there.

R Parque Chicaque 04°36'53.54"N, 74°18'42.63"W 2’065-2'550 m I spent the two last days of my trip in 2016 in this beautiful cloud forest not so far from Bogotá.

I count 86 species there, including 2 endemic: Moustached Brushfinch and Black Inca

(observed on the patio of the lodge... my last “new” species for my 2016 trip ;-)!) and 3 near-

endemic. The mixed flocks present here were fabulous with a lot of furnariidae (including the

rare Spectacled Prickletail), warblers and tanagers. I observed also 2 Plushcaps (one near the

lodge down and one in the middle of the slope in the bamboo). I slept in the lodge; the

accomodation and the meal was relatively cheap and I could hear Rufous-banded Owl,

Andean Pygmy Owl and Band-winged Nightjar from my bed.

R Laguna de Pedro Palo 04°41'12.08"N, 74°22'47.50"W 1’975-2’110 m This site was visited once during one of my rare rainy day in January-February, 2016. The place

should host Turquoise Dacnis that I missed despite nice mixed flocks. I observed here the

endemic Silvery-throated Spinetail and Moustached Brushfinch.

R PNN Chingaza I took the road from La Calera to the entrance of Piedras Gordas and I did several stops along

the road. Interesting birds species encountered, including the endemic (sub)species of Tawny

Antpitta, the near-endemic Bronze-tailed Thornbill and the beautiful and endemic Green-

bearded Helmetcrest around the Quebrada Palacio (04°44'39.54"N, 73°51'34.04"W).

S Forested area 04°43'45.42"N, 73°53'13.89"W 3’240-3’435 m

S Páramo area 04°44'39.54"N, 73°51'34.04"W 3’500-3’610 m

R Laguna de Fúquene 05°28'5.49"N, 73°46'15.80"W 2’565 m Along the western part of the lake, it was rather easy

to find 3 endemic species: Bogota Rail, Apolinar's

Wren and Silvery-throated Spinetail. I saw also the

localized Subtropical Doradito, the near-endemic

Rufous-browed Conebill and huge flock of Blue-

winged Teal.

Boyacá R Soatá

S NE of Soatá 06°20'16.84"N, 72°40'35.94"W 1’860-1’900 m

I explored the Northeastern part of Soatá just at the end the village. There were several small

trails and the typical species were rather easy to find, such as the endemic and critically

endangered Niceforo's Wren and the endemic and endangered Chestnut-bellied

Hummingbird, also the endemic Apical Flycatcher. There were a good number of migratory

species present there: Yellow-throated Vireo, Baltimore Oriole, Rose-breasted Grosbeak,

Summer Tanager, Tennessee, Mourning, Bay-breasted and Canada Warbler.

S Road Onzaga – Soatá 06°20'11.31"N, 72°44'11.66"W 2’700-2’990 m

I was looking there unsuccessfully for the Colombian Mountain Grackle. There were several

near-endemic Longuemare's Sunangel.

Santander R Puerto Araujo 06°31'28.05"N, 74°05'6.24"W 100 m

This was not a planned stop, but I had a problem with my tire and I stopped in a garage near

Puerto Araujo. I birdwatch a bit around and it was worth it. I first saw a group of Blue-and-

yellow Macaw. Then I observed from the bridge and I spotted in a group of Grey-breasted

Martin and Purple Martin, a Mangrove Swallow that seem to be a very rare species (or at least

underrated) in Colombia.

Magdalena R Santa Marta 11°14'40.36"N, 74°12'52.55"W 0 m

A few of the newly split endemic Bronze-brown Cowbird were observed in the big roosting

place of icteridae in the town of Santa Marta.

R Parque Isla de Salamanca 11°00'44.46"N, 74°38'22.56"W 0 m I arranged a taxi from Santa Marta to reach the park. It was closed but the friendly ranger

opened it with a little baksheesh. The place is normally good to look for the endemic and

critically endangered Sapphire-bellied Hummingbird. Unfortunately there were almost no

hummingbirds flying around. In the mangroves, I observed a good number of Bicolored

Conebill, Prothonotary Warbler and Northern Waterthrush. I also observed 1 Louisiana

Waterthrush and 3 Belted Kingfishers.

R PNN Tayrona A total of 110 species were spotted around the PNN Tayrona during my two visits.

S Calabazo (S of PNN Tayrona) 11°17'6.85"N, 74°00'5.45"W 150-180 m

We slept in Casa Blanca Hospedaje. A rather cheap and beautiful hostel with friendly hosts.

Several birds with high diversity were observed around including Keel-billed Toucan, Pale-

bellied Hermit, Ochre-lored Flatbill, Buff-breasted Wren or Clay-colored Thrush.

S Vda. Canaveral (S of PNN Tayrona) 11°16'38.97"N, 73°55'8.73"W 40-150 m

I slept in this hamlet before visiting the sector Cañaveral/Arrecifes of the PNN Tayrona.

S PNN Tayrona (Bahía Concha) 11°17'45.78"N, 74°09'6.39"W 0-35 m

The Bay was easily reached from Santa Marta by moto-taxi. The area is rather dry and I did

some interesting observations, such as the endemic Turquoise-winged Parrotlet, also

Scaled Dove, Russet-throated Puffbird, Pearly-vented Tody-Tyrant and Scrub Greenlet.

S PNN Tayrona (Cañaveral/Arrecifes) 11°18'54.11"N, 73°57'5.31"W 0-65 m

I walked all the way from the entrance of the park to the Playa Arrecifes. The first part along

the concrete road was interesting with several Lance-tailed Manakin and 1 Grey-capped

Cuckoo. Another good zone was between the camping area of Arrecifes and the Playa

Arrecifes. Especially the lagoon near the sea where there were Tricolored Heron and Belted

Kingfisher, as well as a very small pond more in the forest were I observed a Neotropical

Otter, Capped Heron and Sapphire-throated Hummingbird.

S PNN Tayrona (Pueblito) 11°17'52.49"N, 73°59'57.80"W 165-445 m

This sector is much greener and at higher elevation

than the previous ones. We walked up to the

archeological area of Pueblito. On the way we

encountered a lot of Lance-tailed Manakin, also

White-chinned Sapphire, Pale-eyed Pygmy Tyrant,

Yellow-olive Flatbill and Blue-black Grosbeak. The

surprise of the walk was the observation of a Buff-

rumped Warbler outside its habitual range.

R Minca A total of 183 species were observed including 19

endemics and 9 near-endemics around Minca on the

Northwestern slope of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

Besides being a hotspot of endemism, the region is also

good for the American migratory birds with 13 species

observed. In addition to common species like Tennessee,

Blackburnian Warbler and Rose-breasted Grosbeak, we observed on April 9, 2017 just above

La Victoria a Blue-winged Warbler, a very rare species in Colombia! We did an interesting

observationon April 9, 2017 of a pair Summer Tanager with some “courtship behavior” that

could show a putative breeding of the species there.

S Village 11°08'35.66"N, 74°07'7.68"W 580-640 m

Minca is easily accessible from Santa Marta. In 2016, I slept in the Hotel Minca - La Casona.

The hotel has a beautiful garden with feeders attracting several hummingbirds, tanager and

Golden-winged Sparrow but it is not the cheapest option. We observed Military Macaw in

the surroundings. The village is nice (a good restaurant/bar in Minca: The Lazy Cat).

PNN Tayrona (Pueblito)

S Road to La Victoria 11°08'37.56"N, 74°06'36.18"W 670-760 m

Road from Minca to La Victoria around Pozo Azul. The birds encountered there are mostly

similar to those at “La Victoria”. Interesting sightings including Black-and-white Owl heard

and observed above the road (11°08'39.24"N, 74°06'43.48"W).

S La Victoria 11°07'37.60"N, 74°06'19.36"W 860-1'340 m

The observations on the main road between Pozo Azul and Cincinati and the surroundings

of the brewery/coffee factory, as well as the way between this last place and the “Tienda El

Campano” are written under “La Victoria”. The area was covered during both of my trips

in Colombia. In 2017 we stayed in the nice hotel “Colores de la Sierra” (a good option to

explore then by foot the surroundings and the view is just amazing with large groups of

psittacidae in the evening). A total of 115 species were registered including 6 endemics:

Santa Marta Woodstar (North of the “Tienda El Campano”: 11°06'52.06"N, 74°05'30.28"W),

Santa Marta Foliage-gleaner (North of the “Tienda El Campano”: 11°06'55.71"N,

74°05'28.03"W), Santa Marta Antbird (once near the “Tienda El Campano”: 11°06'44.88"N,

74°05'37.14"W and once in the West of the “Finca Victoria”: 11°07'27.89"N, 74°06'2.27"W),

Santa Marta Tapaculo (North of the “Tienda El Campano”: 11°06'46.63"N, 74°05'34.59"W),

White-lored Warbler (once North of the “Tienda El Campano” and once in the “Finca

Victoria”, then much more common higher) and Santa Marta Brushfinch (common around

the “Tienda El Campano” and higher) , as well as 6 near-endemics like the Venezuelan

Tyrannulet (observed between the “Tienda El Campano” and the “Finca Victoria”). Other

interesting sightings included Striped Cuckoo, Gartered Trogon, Red-billed Parrot, Blue-

and-yellow Macaw, Military Macaw (observed like the other macaw from “Colores de la

Sierra”), Rusty-breasted Antpitta, (Santa Marta) Coopmans's Tyrannulet, Bang's Wood-

wren, Southern Nightingale-Wren, Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush, Yellow-legged

Thrush, Pale-eyed Thrush, White-necked Thrush, Black-headed Tanager and the

surprisingly common Swallow Tanager.

S Cincinati 11°05'42.08"N, 74°04'37.28"W 1’530-1’760 m

Cincinati is the start of the trail leading up to the Cuchilla San Lorenzo.

S Road Cincinati - San Lorenzo 11°06'20.08"N, 74°04'11.21"W 1’980-2’200 m

On the road down from San Lorenzo to Cincinati we observed Black-banded Woodcreeper,

Sierra Nevada Brushfinch and Golden Grosbeak.

S San Lorenzo (Biological station) 11°06'42.54"N, 74°03'15.89"W 2’215-2’325 m

In 2016 we stayed for the night in the biological station of San Lorenzo (a cheap and

convenient alternative to explore the Cuchilla). 5 endemics were encountered at this place:

‘Santa Marta’ Screech Owl, White-tailed Starfrontlet, Santa Marta Antpitta, White-lored

Warbler and Santa Marta Brushfinch. Other interesting species such as Band-tailed Guan,

Golden-breasted Fruiteater and Slaty-backed Nightingale-Thrush.

S Cuchilla San Lorenzo 11°06'28.03"N, 74°02'54.28"W 2’390-2’600 m

The Cuchilla San Lorenzo is really a hotspot of endemism with 10 endemics (3 putative

endemic splits) and 3 near-endemics out of 39 species encountered. We walked up before

the dusk directly from the biological station. The night walk gave us several singing Stygian

Owl. Then we started to birdwatch in the upper part (about 1.5 kilometers before the top of

the Cuchilla) before walking down to Cincinati. We

encountered numerous interesting species: Black-

fronted Wood Quail, (Santa Marta) Tyrian

Metaltail, White-tipped Quetzal (5 birds!), (Santa

Marta) White-throated Toucanet, Santa Marta

Parakeet (11°06'28.03"N, 74°02'54.28"W), Rusty-

headed Spinetail, Streak-capped Spinetail, (Sierra

Nevada) Rufous Antpitta, Brown-rumped

Tapaculo, Santa Marta Bush Tyrant (11°06'27.43"N,

74°02'54.78"W), Hermit Wood Wren, Santa Marta

Warbler, Yellow-crowned Whitestart and Santa

Marta Mountain Tanager.

Guajira R SFF Los Flamencos

I visited the site in 2016 with Ross and accompanied by local guides from “Birding Guajira”.

We were staying in El Remanso del Santuario; a good option to explore the region. We

encountered 103 species (8 near endemics) during our stay. Some interesting species observed

in all sectors including Red-billed Emerald, Chestnut Piculet and Grey Pileated Finch.

S Sector Boca de Camarones 11°25'40.35"N, 73°05'18.11"W 0 m

This area is really nice as it combines

dry habitat and wetlands. We

scanned the lagoon and we walked

around the dry bushes in the region

between Boca de Camarones and

Camarones. Special birds from the

dry area were seen: Crested

Bobwhite, Harris's Hawk, Bare-eyed

Pigeon, Nacunda Nighthawk

(observed at the dusk), Green-

rumped Parrotlet, Caribbean

Hornero, White-whiskered

Spinetail, Black-crested Antshrike,

Northern White-fringed Antwren,

Slender-billed Inezia, Brown-

crested Flycatcher and Vermilion

Cardinal. The lagoon attracted

numerous waders, laridae and

various water birds like American Flamingo, Wood Stork, Roseate Spoonbill, Reddish

Egret, American Oystercatcher, Grey Plover, Short-billed Dowitcher, Marbled Godwit

(rare; 3 birds), Whimbrel, Willet, Ruddy Turnstone, Sanderling, Least Sandpiper,

Semipalmated Sandpiper, Western Sandpiper, Black Skimmer, Laughing Gull (very

common), Kelp Gull (an extremely rare species in Colombia), American Herring Gull (2

birds), Lesser Black-backed Gull (ca.10 birds: a really big group for the Americas!), Gull-

billed Tern, Caspian Tern, Cabot's Tern and Common Tern (3 birds).

Note that the only House Sparrows of all my trips were observed there.

S Sector La Isla 11°24'25.24"N, 73°03'54.81"W 5 m

The area in the South of Camarones contains mostly the same species as the Northwestern

part (Sector Boca de Camarones). In addition we observed a Scarlet Ibis with some hybrids

in a group of American White Ibis. We have also seen a Black-collared Hawk and a Red-

billed Scythebill.

S SE of Camarones 11°25'11.73"N, 73°03'13.87"W 5 m

We walked along some trails in the Southeast of Camarones to look for dry bushes species

like Tocuyo Sparrow and Orinoco Saltator. We saw them around this point 11°25'11.92"N,

73°03'14.81"W.

Bolívar R Cartagena

S La Boquilla 10°28'31.48"N, 75°29'33.64"W 0 m

I just birdwatch along the mangroves near La Boquilla for 1-2 hours. I saw a dozen of Green

Heron, as Panamanian Flycatcher and Mangrove Warbler.

Antioquia R Medellín

S Medellín (Botanical Garden) 06°16'16.77"N, 75°33'46.19"W 1'465 m

The botanical garden of Medellín was pretty basic in term of birds present.

S Medellín (Parque Cerro El Volador) 06°15'58.23"N, 75°34'45.69"W 1’505-1'595 m

As we had afew hours in the town of Medellín we chose to visit this park located in the

center and it worths it for urban birding. We observed 2 Lesser Kiskadees (apparently rare

in the region), 4 Olivaceous Piculets, Western Emerald, Bar-crested Antshrike and Ruddy-

breasted Seedeater. There were also a good number of migratory species: Western Wood

Pewee, Acadian Flycatcher, Mourning Warbler, American Yellow Warbler and Baltimore

Oriole.

S Sabaneta (La Romera) 06°07'37.92"N, 75°36'1.97"W 1’875-1'995 m

Despite a « late » birding in this site (yes… party in Medellín are awesome and the morning

could be difficult!), it produces quickly the most wanted species: the endemic Red-bellied

Grackle in a group of oropendolas.

S San Antonio (E of Medellín) 06°10'44.08"N, 75°28'1.23"W 2’255 m

We slept in La Cabaña Hospedaje to enjoy more “nature” and calm near Medellín (few

kilometers from the International Airport of Medellín). The garden of the hostel contained,

for example, Colombian Chachalaca, Grey-throated Toucanet and Plain-breasted Hawk.

R RN Cañon del Río Claro 05°53'40.00"N, 74°51'28.23"W 300-450 m I stayed 2 days in 2016 in this

beautiful reserve despite the very

hot and wet climate. I noticed 71

species including 4 endemics:

White-mantled Barbet, Beautiful

Woodpecker, Apical Flycatcher

and the threatened Antioquia

Bristle Tyrant, and also 4 near-

endemics: Magdalena Antbird,

Southern Bentbill, White-bibbed

Manakin and Yellow-browed

Shrike-Vireo. Other species rarely encountered elsewhere during my trips, such asFasciated

Tiger Heron, Rufous Motmot, Collared Aracari, Citron-throated Toucan, Olivaceous Flatbill,

Rufous Piha, Band-backed Wren, Long-billed Gnatwren and Fulvous-vented Euphonia. One

of the most amazing observation in this site is the leaving from the cave roost of the Oilbirds;

what an incredible atmosphere!

R Amagá 06°03'13.26"N, 75°42'24.71"W 1’330 m We arrived in Medellín airport from our trip on the Pacific coast in the afternoon and we took

our rental car from there. We chose to slept somewhere between Medellín and Bolombolo so

we stayed in a finca in the North of Amagá. An early morning birdwatching in the garden

produced 35 bird species in 2 hours including the endemic Greyish Piculet, also Western

Emerald and Subtropical Cacique. There was a Black-and-white Owl singing during the night.

R Bolomboló (Montenegro) 05°58'8.83"N, 75°51'13.73"W 690 m We stopped here in order to found the newly described Antioquia Wren present in the semi-

dry woodlands around. The species was relatively easy to locate few kilometers in the West of

Bolomboló (05°58'5.61"N, 75°51'14.09"W)

R Jardín

S Village 05°35'47.56"N, 75°49'17.71"W 1'740 m

The typical Antioquian village of Jardín worth it. If you have time to walk in the city, visit

the church and drink a delicious coffee, just do it. Just 500 meters from the main square, there

is a “garden” with a lek of Andean Cock-of-the-rock. After a little entrance fees you can

enjoy those amazing birds displaying. In 2016, I also observed a Green-fronted Lancebill

hawking insects over the river below and an American Barn Owl flying in the evening

around the main church.

S SE of Jardín (Kantarrana) 05°35'0.97"N, 75°47'33.42"W 1’990 m

In 2017, we stayed in Kantarrana Casa De Campo just outside the village of Jardín. The hotel

was not so expensive and beautiful. It is also well located to explore the road to Ventanas.

We did some interesting sightings during a small evening walk around this place, including

a female of Andean Cock-of-the-rock and several tanagers.

One of my favorite birding place in Colombia. During my two visits I spotted 115 species (2

endemics and 8 near-endemics) between Jardín and the pass near Ventanas. It is pleasant to

birdwatch along the road as there is very little traffic and you have often good view on the

birds crossing the road, especially with the amazing mixed flocks. I observed one of my

biggest in April 2017 that lasted about 20 minutes with more than 50 birds from 25 different

species… The site is good for Tourmaline Sunangel, Black-billed Mountain Toucan,

Yellow-eared Parrot, Green-and-black Fruiteater and tangers (19 species of thraupidae

observed and, in particular, a very favorable place to look for Grass-green Tanager). Other

interesting observation included Ocellated Tapaculo, Black-throated Tody-Tyrant, Dusky

Piha, Munchique Wood Wren and (Western) Citrine Warbler. I saw twice a Tanager Finch

in almost the same area (around the curve near this point: 05°32'34.58"N, 75°48'12.38"W).

Caldas R Victoria 05°19'37.6"N, 74°55'19.3"W 1’025 m

I stayed in a small basic hostel in Victoria. The access to the forest itself, in the northwest of the

village is quick from there. I encountered 58 bird species during my visit in January 12, 2016

including 3 endemics: Colombian Chachalaca, Beautiful Woodpecker and Sooty Ant Tanager.

Other interesting species were seen, such as Black-bellied Wren and Yellow-backed Tanager.

The site is also impressively attractive for American migratory species: Acadian Flycatcher (3

ind.), Great Crested Flycatcher (>4), Grey-cheeked Thrush (1), Swainson's Thrush (ca.40; the

most common species observed there), Black-and-white Warbler (1), Tennessee Warbler (1),

Mourning Warbler (1), American Redstart (4), Bay-breasted Warbler (5), Blackpoll Warbler

(ca.10), Canada Warbler (>3) and Summer Tanager (>8).

R Reserva Río Blanco 05°04'24.28"N, 75°26'16.34"W 2’245-2’715 m How to describe this site other than in paradise for birdwatcher!?! I spent 3 days in January 2016

and 1 in April 2017. In total I recorded 132 species including 1 endemic and 5 near-endemics.

Not only the number of birds and how easy it is to bird here, make the reserve a perfect place

to stay but also the welcome of the staff and the proximity with Manizales. It is one of the only

birding site where you should plan in advance your visit as the number of places is limited and

much requested. To plan your stay take contact with “Aguas de Manizales” who manages the

reserve.

The site is an awesome site for the antpittas as you can easily encountered 5 species: Chestnut-

crowned, Bicolored, Chestnut-naped, Slaty-crowned and the endemic Brown-banded

Antpitta. The same for the tapaculos,I encountered Ocellated, Ash-colored, Northern White-

crowned, Spillmann's and Blackish Tapaculo. I also observed there several species that I saw

only in this reserve or very few elsewhere like Common Potoo, Rufous-bellied Nighthawk,

Golden-headed Quetzal, Bar-bellied Woodpecker, Powerful Woodpecker, Rusty-faced

Parrot, Tyrannine Woodcreeper, White-tailed Tyrannulet, Rufous-headed Pygmy Tyrant,

Flavescent Flycatcher, Rufous-crowned Tody-Flycatcher, Smoky Bush Tyrant, Barred

Fruiteater, Pale-footed Swallow, Yellow-bellied Siskin, White-capped Tanager, Masked

Saltator and Red-hooded Tanager.

R PNN Los Nevados (Nevado del Ruiz) I visited two times the region in 2016 and in 2017. I encountered 60 species (2 endemics and 4

near-endemics). The area is easily accessible from Manizales and interesting for the elfin forest

and paramo species.

I birdwatched several patches

of elfin forest along the road.

One of the best part is the

wooded area just before the

small lake (4°59'52.1"N,

75°19'43.6"W). Some of the nice

species encountered here were:

Black-thighed Puffleg,

Viridian Metaltail, Rainbow-

bearded Thornbill, Rufous-

fronted Parakeet, Paramo Tapaculo, and Red-crested Cotinga. The small forested patch

below this one (5°00'32.5"N, 75°19'46.9"W) worths a little stop. I saw there Agile Tit-Tyrant

and Paramo Seedeater. The lake on the right after those areas hosted Andean Teal and

Andean Duck.

S Entrance of PNN Los Nevados 04°56'2.02"N, 75°20'57.04"W 4’040-4’090 m

The birding just around the entrance of the PNN could produce some nice species like the

endemic Buffy Helmetcrest (generally feeding on the espeletia; apparently more easy in April

when they are singing), but also Andean Condor, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Rufous-

fronted Parakeet, Stout-billed Cinclodes (regularly on the area with shorter grass, for

example around the weather station), Andean Tit-Spinetail, Tawny Antpitta (really

common here and rather easy to see well with a little patience).

S Road to Murillo (Nevado del Ruiz) 04°56'25.67"N, 75°20'6.22"W 3’970-4’050 m

Just before the entrance of the PNN the road split in two and one lead to Murillo. Along this

track I observed Stout-billed Cinclodes and Paramo Ground Tyrant.

S Road to Termales del Ruiz 04°57'46.91"N, 75°21'55.72"W 3’665-4’040 m

One of the key species along this road that goes down to Termales del Ruiz is the endemic

Rufous-fronted Parakeet. The best way to detect this species is to hear it. Often they feed on

espeletia or in the elfin forest. One of the good spot is 3.5 kilometers before Termales del Ruiz

(when you go down at 04°57'47.44"N, 75°22'5.29"W). I observed also Chestnut-winged

Cinclodes, Paramo Tapaculo and Plain-colored Seedeater.

S Termales del Ruiz 04°58'13.34"N, 75°22'38.97"W 3’480-3’520 m

We visited this site on April 23, 2017. The place is really nice to take a lunch (with nice view

over the elfin forest with some mountain tanagers), to relax in the hot spring and to enjoy

the amazing number of hummingbirds flying around the feeders. We observed 8 hummer

species: Shining Sunbeam, Mountain Velvetbreast, Buff-winged Starfrontlet, Sword-

billed Hummingbird, Great Sapphirewing, Black-thighed Puffleg, Golden-breasted

Puffleg and Rainbow-bearded Thornbill.

S Road below Termales del Ruiz 04°58'20.04"N, 75°22'51.72"W 3’390-3’400 m

We walked the road down Termales del Ruiz for about 1 kilometer. Interesting species

encountered here are mostly the same as in Termales de Ruiz.

Risaralda R Road Ventanas – Riosucio 05°31'7.85"N, 75°47'43.93"W 2’100-2’875 m

The birds encountered here are mostly the same than those you can observe on the road Jardín

– Ventanas even if the forest from this side of the pass is less well preserved.

R SFF Otún Quimbaya 04°43'43.11"N, 75°34'34.96"W 1’840-1’970 m A bit like Río Blanco, it is another paradise for birdwatcher. An easily accessible site with

relatively cheap and nice accommodations, friendly staff and some fabulous birding

opportunities. I spent there 5 days during both years. All together I encountered 126 bird species

including 7 endemics: Cauca Guan (very common everywhere around the site), Chestnut

Wood Quail (heard once), Greyish Piculet (once observation with 3 birds on the Sendero

Bejucos), Stiles's Tapaculo, Sooty-headed Wren (once 2 birds along the road), Flame-rumped

Tanager, Multicolored Tanager (along the road) and Crested Ant Tanager (seen twice on the

river side of the road).as well as 7 near-endemics such as Brown Inca and Moustached Antpitta

(heard on the mountain side of the road just after the center). I also encountered several other

interesting species like Tawny-breasted Tinamou (heard and observed once in 2016), Mottled

Owl (hears in April 2017), Collared Trogon, Spotted Barbtail, Plumbeous-crowned

Tyrannulet, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow (surprisingly abundant here), Chestnut-breasted Wren,

Blue-naped Chlorophonia, Chestnut-breasted Chlorophonia, Cerulean Warbler (once along

the road near the center in a mixed flock), Ashy-throated Bush Tanager and Golden-naped

Tanager (observed once along the road in a mixed flock).

A good strategy to bird here

is to stay for 2 nights. In the

early morning go for a walk

along the road then return

back to the center for the

breakfast and to do one of

the other trails (to visit the 3

other ones you have to be

accompanied by a local

guide). Then return back to

the road. Generally the mid-

day is good for the mixed flocks that could be really nice here. After lunch you can go higher

along the road (in the direction of El Cedral). If you want to change a bit, you can also prospect

the garden and the edge of the forest or the nearby river for dipper and Torrent Duck. And if

you want a break or if it is raining, you can drink a beer (or else) with a good view.

R Santa Rosa de Cabal (Potreros) 04°51'24.07"N, 75°29'4.57"W 3'080 m This site is apparently a good option and relatively accessible site to try the endemic and

critically endangered Fuertes's Parrot, whose current population is approximatively 160 birds.

After 15 minutes on the place I heard this species but it was impossible to see them. I waited

almost 4 hours before I saw the birds as they were moving from tree to tree without big flight.

I also observed there 2 other rare parakeets: Rufous-fronted Parakeet and Golden-plumed

Parakeet and I encountered Purple-backed Thornbill and Grey-breasted Mountain Toucan

during my waiting time.

R Camino de Montezuma 5°14'16.7"N, 76°05'07.6"W 1’300-2'300 m The amazing Camino de Montezuma leads up

across beautiful forests. I visited the place on

January 23 and 24, 2017. I did a completely

different strategy from the one of most birdwatcher

visiting Montezuma. I slept in Pueblo Rico then I

reached at the dawn the road. I walked up to 2’300

meters before walking down. This is a cheap option

and it allows you to enjoy more all the birds

present. During the 1.5 day I encountered 105

species including 8 endemics from Colombia such

as Tatama Tapaculo (after the 2nd river),

Munchique Wood Wren (after the 2nd river),

Black-and-gold Tanager (after the 1st river), Gold-

ringed Tanager (after the 2nd river), Multicolored

Tanager (just after the 1st river) and Crested Ant

Tanager (just after the 1st river), and 19 near-

endemics (mostly endemic to the Chocó) including

Colombian Screech Owl (observed at the dawn along the road that leads to Montezuma),

Empress Brilliant (between the 1st and 2nd river), Brown Inca (after the 2nd river), Violet-tailed

Sylph (after the 2nd river), Uniform Treehunter (after the 2nd river), Toucan Barbet (just after

the 2nd river), Choco Woodpecker (after the 1st river), Star-chested Treerunner (between the 1st

and 2nd river), Uniform Treehunter (after the 2nd river), Yellow-breasted Antpitta (after the 1st

river), Narino Tapaculo (after the 2nd river), Orange-breasted Fruiteater (between the 1st and

2nd river), Choco Warbler (between the 1st and 2nd river), Dusky Bush Tanager (after the 2nd

river), Black-chinned Mountain Tanager (between the 1st and 2nd river), Glistening-green

Tanager (after the 1st river), Rufous-throated Tanager (after the 1st river), Scarlet-and-white

Tanager (between the 1st and 2nd river) and Lemon-spectacled Tanager (between the 1st and 2nd

river). Other interesting species not (or rarely) encountered elsewhere including: before the 1st

river: White-tipped Sicklebill, White-tailed Hillstar, Broad-billed Motmot, Chestnut-capped

Brushfinch, Silver-throated Tanager; after the 1st river: Black Hawk-Eagle, Golden-headed

Quetzal, Spotted Woodcreeper, Buff-fronted Foliage-gleaner, Pacific Tuftedcheek,

Olivaceous Piha, Golden-winged Warbler, Choco Brushfinch, Olive Finch, Yellow-throated

Bush Tanager and after the 2nd river: Plain-backed Antpitta.

Chocó R El Valle

We flew in April 2017 with Satena from Medellín to Bahia solano and then we took a taxi to El

Valle. We stayed in the Posada ecoturistica. The price was one of the cheapest in the area but a

bit too expensive, to my opinion, for what it was. The weather was rather difficult as we had

several days with heavy rain from midnight to mid-day. During those days, the morning was

too rainy and no bird were moving and after the rain the forest was extremely quiet. Despite

the difficult weather conditions we encountered 136 bird species including 10 near-endemic.

The area held several North American migratory passerines like Eastern Wood Pewee, Eastern

Kingbird, Baltimore Oriole, Northern Waterthrush, Mourning, Bay-breasted and American

Yellow Warbler, and also a migrant one coming from the South: Fork-tailed Flycatcher.

Pygmy Kingfisher, Black-breasted Puffbird, White-whiskered Puffbird, Spot-crowned

Barbet, Stripe-billed Aracari, Choco Toucan, Yellow-throated Toucan, Cinnamon

Woodpecker, Black-striped Woodcreeper, Stub-tailed Antbird, a lot of Purple-throated

Fruitcrow, Green Manakin, Golden-collared Manakin and Tawny-faced Gnatwren.

We also walked along the road that goes to Mutis. We observed a very late Merlin. Most of

the interesting species were the same as the other visited sites like Pacific Antwren or Choco

Sirystes.

The way on the North of El Valle produced observation of Great Black Hawk and Peregrine

Falcon.

We did a canoe tour with „Tundó tours” which was really nice. We saw several interesting

species like Bronzy Hermit, Rose-faced Parrot, Black-tipped Cotinga and Purple-throated

Fruitcrow.

Valle Del Cauca R Laguna El Sonso 03°52'10.50"N, 76°21'0.68"W 935 m

I visited twice the site; once in January 2016 and once in April 2017. In January, I spent more

time exploring the place than in April. Both years, I birded in the area going to the reserve and

in 2016 I also visited the reserve itself and the lake. The reserve was closed but fortunately a

guardian open the gate for me. In January, the whole area was very dry (except the wetlands

around the lake) and in April all the surroundings were flooded. The site is really good for the

local waterfowls and waders like Black-bellied Whistling Duck, Fulvous Whistling Duck,

Roseate Spoonbill, Cocoi Heron, Anhinga, Limpkin, Black-necked Stilt, Wattled Jacana, as

for the migrant and wintering ones like Northern Shoveler, Glossy Ibis, Greater Yellowlegs,

Lesser Yellowlegs, Solitary Sandpiper, Spotted Sandpiper, Baird's Sandpiper. With 18 out of

the 72 species observed, the Laguna de Sonso is one of the best site in the interior of Colombia

for migratory species. Some of them are really abundant like Barn Swallow and Sand Martin,

and some other are rarities as it may be one of the most southerly place for several American

species like Wilson's Snipe, Belted Kingfisher (only a handful of records so far south in South

America) and Orchard Oriole! The region hosted also some species not especially linked with

water like Grey-headed Dove, Ruby-topaz Hummingbird and Apical Flycatcher.

R Bosque de Yotoco 03°52'32.29"N, 76°26'10.49"W 1’610-1'680 m The forest of Yotoco is accessible and not far from the previous site. I encountered there the

endemic Parker's Antbird, the localized Chestnut-crowned Gnateater, and the endemic

(sub)species Colombian (Speckle-breasted) Wren. The place held also some nice mixed flocks,

especially near the clearing in the western part of the forest where I saw Guira Tanager and

several American passerines like Yellow-throated Vireo, Black-and-white, Blackburnian and

Canada Warbler.

R Embajada de Ginebra (Km 18) 03°30'28.27"N, 76°37'12.61"W 1'970 m The restaurant of Embajada de Ginebra is a perfect stop for lunch as the food is good and, in

the same time, you can enjoy the view of the hummingbirds coming to the feeders.

R Embalse Calima (Río Bravo) 03°52'56.18"N, 76°33'57.74"W 1’300-1'410 m Another nice site I discovered by searching roads in “Google Map” to bird in the Cordilliera

occidental. A small road start from the shore of the Embalse Calima and go below the dam

along the Rio Bravo. The forest is beautiful and very convenient to watch birds from the road.

In April 2017, we just walked until the mid-morning down to the bottom of the dam but we saw

50 species including 4 endemics and 3 near-endemics. Some interesting species encountered

were Rufous-fronted Wood Quail (heard), Semicollared Hawk, White-chested Swift

(together with other swifts), Tatama Tapaculo (heard), Scaled Fruiteater, Andean Cock-of-the-

rock (heard), Choco Brushfinch, Multicolored Tanager (apparently rather common here as we

saw at least 7 birds) and Crested Ant Tanager.

R PNN Farallones de Cali (El Topacio) 03°19'16.26"N, 76°37'59.16"W 1’580-1'920 m The reserve of El Topacio near Pance (PNN Farallones de Cali) is easily accessible from the

South of Cali. When I visited the site in January 19, 2016 I encountered 63 bird species during

the morning including Ruddy Quail-Dove, White-fronted Quail-Dove (the place seems good

for the quail-dove), Green Hermit, Striped Treehunter, Dusky Leaftosser, Black-billed

Peppershrike and Slate-colored Seedeater.

R Valle de Anchicaya The Valley of Anchicaya is probably

one of the most exciting site. The road

starts in El Queremal and leads down

through scenic landscapes with pretty

well preserved forests. I visited this

site both years; in 2016 I drove down

to Buenaventura but in the end the

road become really dirty and I didn’t

have a 4x4 wheels… in 2017, we just

did some back and forth. I always slept

in the Hotel El Campanario in El

Queremal, a cheap and perfect option to explore the valley. During both trip, I encountered 142

(!) species: 1 endemic and 24 near-endemics (mostly endemics of the Chocó). Some “special”

species were encountered only in the upper part or only in the lower part, and other could be

found a bit all along the road like Slaty Spinetail, Slaty-capped Shrike-Vireo, Orange-crowned

Euphonia and Silver-throated Tanager.

The upper part contains the first 12 kilometers from El Queremal down to 945 m.a.s.l. (before

La Elsa). Several interesting species were observed in this sector: Torrent Duck, Lyre-tailed

Nightjar (on the road before the dawn: 03°34'3.59"N, 76°45'42.18"W), White-tipped

Sicklebill (03°31'58.14"N, 76°45'1.16"W), Empress Brilliant (03°31'58.61"N, 76°45'1.04"W),

Velvet-purple Coronet (03°32'53.54"N, 76°45'22.77"W), Purple-bibbed Whitetip

(03°31'31.93"N, 76°44'9.55"W), Violet-tailed Sylph (03°31'31.93"N, 76°44'9.55"W), Choco

Tapaculo (03°33'57.48"N, 76°45'33.08"W), Black-and-white Becard (03°34'2.27"N,

76°45'41.31"W), Choco Brushfinch, Yellow-throated Bush Tanager, Glistening-green

Tanager (03°31'58.31"N, 76°45'6.15"W), Rufous-throated Tanager (pretty common) and

Ochre-breasted Tanager (03°34'2.27"N, 76°45'41.31"W).

The lower part starts near La Elsa from 915 m.a.s.l. to the “lowland”. Numerous interesting

sightings were done in this sector: Baudo Guan (03°35'11.04"N, 76°47'47.84"W), Rufous-

fronted Wood Quail (03°35'9.65"N, 76°47'53.08"W), Band-tailed Barbthroat, White-

whiskered Hermit, Tooth-billed Hummingbird (03°36'40.97"N, 76°53'40.69"W), Green

Thorntail (03°36'57.14"N, 76°55'6.97"W), Purple-chested Hummingbird (03°36'57.12"N,

76°55'12.01"W), White-whiskered Puffbird (03°35'11.04"N, 76°47'47.84"W), Choco Toucan,

Cauca R PNN Puracé

During both visits, I recorded 60 species (5 near-endemics) in the area of the PNN. This park is

really scenic (beautiful elfin and cloud forests, as well as colorful hot springs in Termales de San

Juan).

The lower part is Termales de San Juan and below. We mostly watched bird from the

roadand from the trails to the hot spring and to the waterfall. We did some interesting

sightings here such as Grey-breasted Mountain Toucan, Ashy-headed Tyrannulet,

Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrant, Black-headed Hemispingus (a group seen once in a mixed

flock below Termales de San Juan: 02°20'12.53"N, 76°17'58.17"W) and Plushcap (seen once

in a mixed flock below Termales de San Juan: 02°19'46.01"N, 76°17'30.27"W)

S Upper part 02°21'23.75"N, 76°19'50.33"W 3’230-3’420 m

The upper part is mostly formed of elfin forests and paramo. This area contained Rainbow-

bearded Thornbill, Agile Tit-Tyrant, Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrant and Mountain Wren.

On January 18, 2016 the Laguna San Rafael (02°22'6.92"N, 76°20'57.15"W) hosted 2 Blue-

winged Teals and 4 Lesser Scaups, as well as a Merlin. These observations are worthwhile

due to the high elevation of the site (3’395 m.a.s.l.). Be careful there, we quickly sink into the

mosses!

S Pilimbala 02°21'53.57"N, 76°24'9.09"W 3'440 m

On the way the national park center in Pilimbala we observed a Carunculated Caracara and

we heard a Swallow-tailed Nightjar at the dusk. Both years, I slept in the chalet in Pilimbala.

It is cheap and very convenient to bird the next morning along the road Popayán – La Plata.

One of the nice species that I observed here was Golden-plumed Parakeet.

Huila R Road to PNN Puracé

A small stop on the way to Finca Meremberg produced among others the observation of 3

Tolima Doves and >2 Dusky-headed Brushfinches; both endemic of Colombia.

After paying a small entrance fees I walked along the different trails and at the edge of the

the hummingbirds like Rufous-vented Whitetip

and White-booted Racket-tail (at least 4 birds!).

We also encountered Whiskered Wren and

Dusky-headed Brushfinch. We stayed in the

beautiful and welcoming “Hostal Huaka-yo”

located just few hundred meters from the

entrance of the Archeological Park.

Cuckoo, Grey Pileated Finch and Dull-colored Grassquit.

R El Vergel/Quindio 02°48'7.24"N, 75°18'49.11"W 475 m In 2016, I tried to stop in what seemed to be suitable habitats in the Upper Magdalena Valley in

order to find the endemic Velvet-fronted Euphonia. I managed to locate a small group in a dry

woodland (savanna type) near El Vergel/Quindio. I didn’t stay too much time in the area as it

was completely full of mosquitos...

R Palestina (Palestina (Reserva El Encanto)) 01°43'15.38"N, 76°07'8.98"W 1’435-1'470 m We spend one fabulous night and morning on May 5, 2017 in the marvelous family pension

“Reserva El Encanto” (+). The house is beautiful and the family very friendly. This quiet area

also worth it to watch the birds. We encountered 53 species during the morning including 3

endemics and 5 near-endemics. Some interesting species observed here: Short-tailed Emerald,

Shining-green Hummingbird, Indigo-capped Hummingbird, Scaled Piculet and Apical

Flycatcher. We also had two worthwhile migratory birds: Olive-sided Flycatcher and Alder

Flycatcher.

Nariño R Laguna de la Cocha

The weather was particularly rainy in the region which made bird watching difficult.

Interesting species observed from the hamlet on the shore of the lake, including Yellow-

billed Pintail, Andean Coot and Grassland Yellow Finch.

The waterfowls observed here were the same as in El Encanto. Additional interesting

species: Cinereous Harrier, Rufous-banded Owl, Black-tailed Trainbearer and Sierran

Elaenia. We were staying in the Hotel Jardín del Lago; a relatively cheap accommodation

with a beautiful view over the lake.

S El Socorro 01°10'50.76"N, 77°08'5.88"W 2’860-3’060 m

We walked up from the Northeast of El Encanto (area of El Socorro) following the indication

of Páramo Bordoncillo. The trail was really dirty in the end so we returned back (the rain

also became more intense). We observed several Grey-breasted Mountain Toucan

(apparently not so rare here; with some close observations), Red-crested Cotinga, (Rufous-

crowned) Spectacled Whitestart, relatively big groups of Hooded and Lacrimose Mountain

Tanagers. We also saw a pretty late Swainson's Thrush.

At the limit between Nariño and Putumayo we walked up along a small trail to an area with

some communication towers. We didn’t get higher as it was very foggy and rainy. We still

observed White-chinned Thistletail and Agile Tit-Tyrant.

Tolima R Valle de Combeima

During my 2 visits in this valley I encountered 84 species (4 endemics and 5 near-endemics).

I observed an endemic Tolima Dove in the North of Ibagué.

We stayed in this hamlet in 2017 before exploring the Valle de Combeima.

I saw an endemic Tolima Dove in the North of Juntas along the road that leads from the

village to the Mirador del Cañón del Combeima and just up from this last place I observed

Indigo-capped Hummingbird. I walked a few hundred meters along the river at the North

of the village to found a small group of the endemic and endangered Yellow-headed

Brushfinch (04°33'44.23"N, 75°19'14.52"W).

S Road Juntas - El Silencio 04°34'40.38"N, 75°19'30.33"W 2’190-2’260 m

S El Silencio 04°36'16.59"N, 75°19'58.36"W 2’520-2’880 m

In El Silencio, I walked a bit up the trail that lead to Nevado del Tolima until it goes down

to the river. The area is pretty good for hummingbirds like Short-tailed Emerald, Green-

tailed Trainbearer or Buff-winged Starfrontlet. I did some other interesting observations

there such as Green-and-black Fruiteater (both years observed in the beginning of the

forest) and Black-collared Jay.

Vaupés R Mitú

I spend 6 days in Mitú with a local guide: Nacho (Jesus Ignacio Cardenas Perilla). He was not a

bird expert but he was really friendly, know almost everybody in the region and know all the

good trails. There are not too many details about the locations as I was writing my observation

on paper and as I was following my guide. I encountered 185 species.

Nightjar (few birds roosting on the dark rock at the edge of the vegetation), Spotted

It is a good trail for cotingas and manakins. Interesting sightings there: Ornate Hawk-Eagle,

Orange-cheeked Parrot, (Southern) White-chinned Woodcreeper, Yellow-throated

Antwren, Imeri Warbling Antbird (near-endemic), Grey-bellied Antbird, White-eyed

Tody-Tyrant, Dusky-chested Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Flycatcher, Plum-throated

Cotinga, Purple-throated Cotinga, Dwarf Tyrant-Manakin, Yellow-crested Manakin,

Western Striped Manakin, Brown-winged Schiffornis, Green Oropendola and Short-

billed Honeycreeper.

We just birded there for few hours. Interesting sightings: Great Tinamou, White-bearded

We stayed for a few nights in the hamlet of Caserio El Once but it was difficult to do some

good birdwatching around. I saw one morning a Sunbittern flying over the street and the

area produced some nice observations of Short-tailed Parrot, Dusky-headed Parakeet,

Amazonian Barred Woodcreeper and Yellow-browed Tody-Flycatcher.

We spent two nights in the Reserva Natural Tucuchira in Santa Sofía (+). The lodging was

cheap and the family host very friendly. They propose different activities (night walk, boat

rides in the varzea: flooded forest, …). There were not so many birds there and we were very

sick at this time but we encountered Tawny-bellied Screech Owl, Black-banded Owl,

Common Potoo, Green-and-rufous Kingfisher, Grey-breasted Sabrewing, Blue-chinned

Sapphire, Black-fronted Nunbird, Scarlet-crowned Barbet, Cream-colored Woodpecker,

Slate-colored Antbird, Bare-necked Fruitcrow and Chestnut-bellied Seed Finch.

S River Santa Sofìa – Leticia 04°06'24.54"S, 70°02'17.08"W 80 m

For the return back to Leticia from Santa Sofía we took the boat from the hostel. The ride in

the flooded forest and along the shore produced the observation of Large-billed Tern, Bare-

necked Fruitcrow, Masked Crimson Tanager, Oriole Blackbird, Caqueta, Lesson's and

Chestnut-bellied Seedeater. We were lucky to observe a Brown-throated sloth swimming

and then climbing a small tree.

Encountered birds list Taxonomy The systematic order used in the following list is the one from the IOC (version 7.3). I noted ()* the

species splited by some authors or with distinctive characters (song, plumage or display) in race

that could indicate a separated species. I wrote if the species is endemic (E) or near-endemic (NE),

as well as the threat status (Birdlife 2017): vulnerable [VU], endangered [EN] and critically

endangered [CR]. I also indicated when possible the different subspecies. And I noted the

observations of rare birds with !!!.

In addition, I used data from the Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive and the Field Guide to

the Birds of Colombia, 2nd edition (Miles McMullan & Thomas Donegan).
