Following consultation with architects andcolour specialists, the standard ColorcoatPrisma® range includes 12 solid colours, 12metallic colours and 3 matt colours. Therange offers an excellent choice of colour toensure the demands of contemporary andarchitecturally challenging projects can bemet whether it be a bold statement or asubtle design.

MetallicsThe majority of metallic flakes used within thepaint formulation are made from Aluminiumand are specially coated to ensure maximumacid resistance, enabling the metallic effect tolast longer.

When incorporated into Colorcoat Prisma®these flakes provide a silver effect and adegree of sparkle or, in combination withconventional colouring pigments, can providea coloured metallic effect. The extent to whichthe pigments reflect light is dependent on thepigment type, size, content and orientation.

Two common pigment types aremanufactured and utilised in ColorcoatPrisma®: ‘Cornflake’ – flat flakes with irregularshapes and ‘Silver Dollar’ – flat discs withuniform shape and size that enables a brightermetallic effect to be achieved.

In order to create the special metallic colours,Colorcoat Prisma® incorporates a greater ratioof ‘Silver Dollar’ pigments, providing a greaterdegree of ‘sparkle’ than the conventional solidmetallic colours.

Colorcoat Prisma® uses our uniqueGalvalloy® metallic coating, a special mix ofZinc and Aluminium that provides unrivalledcorrosion protection, even at cut edges.

How does Galvalloy® work? The metallic coating is essential to theperformance of the pre-finished steel.Traditionally, pre-finished steel products haveused a Zinc metallic coating which is oftenreferred to as Hot-Dipped Galvanised Steel(HDG). This HDG coating does provideimproved corrosion protection, in comparisonwith uncoated steel, but often leaves cutedges vulnerable to increased rates ofcorrosion and will ultimately lead to peelingand/or premature paint delamination.

To address this problem, Colorcoat Prisma®uses the unique and proven Galvalloy®metallic coating. Galvalloy® is made with aspecial mix of 95% Zinc (Zn) and 5%Aluminium (Al) that conforms to EN 10346:2009.

The carefully developed proportions of Zincand Aluminium (Zn-Al) in Galvalloy® offer acombination of increased barrier and sacrificialprotection when compared with conventionalHDG coatings.

The sacrificial protection results frompreferential corrosion of the Zinc over thesteel, and the barrier protection results fromthe presence of a stable Aluminium oxidelayer on the surface of the Galvalloy® coating, both of which inhibit and slow the rate ofanodic undercutting compared toconventional HDG metallic coatings.

The Aluminium in the metallic coating ofGalvalloy® and the manufacturing parametersare optimised to give a very fine two-phasemicrostructure compared with the uniformmicrostructure of HDG.

A typical microstructure of Galvalloy® is shownin figure 4 where the primary Zinc dendritesmake up approximately 20% of the bulkmicrostructure and the Zinc/Aluminiumeutectic the remaining 80%.

For a product using conventional HDG, thecorrosive attack will dissolve all of the metalliccoating at the same rate – leading to obviouspeeling of the paint system as the paint hasnothing to adhere to.

For the same time period, the optimisedGalvalloy® microstructure has a majoradvantage in that the corrosion will occur intwo stages.

Initially, the Zinc phase will be corrodedpreferentially to the Zinc/Aluminium eutectic. As the paint adheres to the eutectic structure,no edge peel is observed.

Over time, the eutectic structure will corrode –but at a greatly reduced rate when comparedwith HDG coatings and thus results in longerdurability.

In addition to exhaustive artificial testing,Galvalloy® has been subjected to prolongedand independent natural weather testingsince its introduction in 1998. Its proven, superior performance means that Galvalloy®lasts for a longer time period than HDG andremains the preferred metallic coating forColorcoat Prisma®.

The micro cross-section of Galvalloy®illustrates the before, figure 5, and after, figure6, corrosion process. It clearly shows the Zincdendrites corroding at a faster rate than theZinc and Aluminium eutectic composition. Theprotective Zinc and Aluminium phase is leftbehind and remains adhered to the organiccoating providing improved corrosionprotection.

Figure 5. Galvalloy® microstructure before corrosion

Figures 5 and 6 illustrate how, as the lighter colouredZinc dendrites ultimately corrode, the uniquemicrostructure of the Galvalloy® layer ensures thatthe surface coating remains adhered to the eutecticsurface.

With a world class reputation in steel, TataSteel products and services are widely usedin the construction market. The steelsubstrate for Colorcoat Prisma® ismanufactured by Tata Steel.

Strong, versatile and truly recyclable, steel isa compelling choice for the buildingenvelope.

Steel has one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios of any building material –producing strong, lightweight structuresenabling fast build programs that are costeffective without any compromise on quality.

Steel provides:• Functionality, versatility,

strength and flexibility.

• Ability to work well with other materials.

• Excellent environmental performance –offering high recyclability and re-usepotential.

• Ability to be pre-fabricated off-site andconstructed quickly and accurately on-site.

• Excellent durability and performance in use.

Designing with steelThe gauge of the steel plays a vital role in thephysical properties and performance of theroof or wall cladding that is manufacturedfrom it. Incorrect specification may, in theworst cases, have safety implications such asroof fragility.

The European standard EN 10143:2006 definesthe tolerances for different grade, width andgauge material for normal and specialtolerance categories. In the case of ColorcoatPrisma®, the gauge is measured as the steelsubstrate plus the Galvalloy® metallic coating.

Tata Steel supplies pre-finished steel to normaland special tolerances according to EN 10143:2006 to ensure that the claddingperforms as designed.

Incorrectly specifying gauge or gauge tolerances can affect:1. Structural performance, including

in service load capacity and purlin spacingsas well as safety implications duringconstruction and maintenance.

2. Building visual appearance, lighter gaugematerial is more prone to damage duringinstallation, and distortion of the profilearound fasteners due to slight misalignmentof the primary/secondary structure.

EasyProfile substrateSome architectural profiles are difficult to formfrom standard structural steel gradesproduced according to EN 10346:2009. To helpwith this Colorcoat Prisma® is also availablewith EasyProfile substrate. This is a softer andmore malleable substrate with controlledmechanical properties that allows the client toproduce more demanding building envelopeprofiles without the risk of profiling defectssuch as springback.

When metallic substrates are painted andcured at peak metal temperatures (PMT) ofbetween 216°C to 250°C, bake hardeningoccurs which results in the yield strength ofthe painted material being > 60 N/mm2 abovethe yield strength of the unpainted material.

The microstructure of steel has a significanteffect on the strength and performance of thesteel. It is controlled in two ways: chemicalcomposition and the processing route whichincludes the size, shape and distribution of thegrains.

The EasyProfile substrate allows moreconsistent mechanical properties than thestandard substrate and utilises a cleaner steelchemistry together with modified heattreatment cycles through the galvanising line. This enables difficult profiles to be produced, from Colorcoat Prisma®, without springback.

Reverse side brandingColorcoat Prisma® is produced with a TataSteel identity on the reverse side, printedevery metre, that includes the Colorcoat®product name, date and time of manufacture.

This provides reassurance to the client that theproduct specified is an authentic Tata Steelproduct, and can also be used to ensure youare using material from the same batch wheretonal consistency is critical. It can also be usedto confirm the directionality when usingmetallic colours.

The combination of its unique Galvalloy®metallic coating and high-build paint systemprovides Colorcoat Prisma® with the ultimatecombination of corrosion resistance andaesthetic appeal. It has been independentlyassessed and exposed to an extensivetesting regime to assess its performance.

The durability of a paint system is importantas it shows its ability to withstand attack fromdifferent sources such as sunlight, water, oxygen and salts. As such buildings in coastallocations are subject to more demandingconditions than urban or rural sites as they areexposed to all these elements as well asabrasives such as wind-blown sand.

Sunlight is the most destructive of theseelements and will eventually lead to a loss ofgloss, fading, chalking, brittleness andeventually loss of coating adhesion. Thelength of time this takes depends on the paintsystem.

The atmosphere around a building alsocontains chemicals and pollutants that shouldbe taken into account, the amount of whichvaries with location.

These chemicals and pollutants acceleratecorrosion by attacking the chemical bondsand the metallic pigments that make up thepaint polymers. Colorcoat Prisma® has beenrigorously tested against all these elementsand the results are shown on the followingpages.

Page 15: Colorcoat Prisma Technical · steel, Tata Steel products and services are widely used in the construction market. Utilising steel produced by Tata Steel in the UK, Colorcoat Prisma®

To ensure the integrity of Colorcoat Prisma®,we use independent laboratory testing tomeasure its performance against corrosion, effect of sunlight, chemical attack andabrasion. All testing of products is carriedout in UKAS accredited laboratories toInternational Standards.

The durability of Colorcoat Prisma® is derivedfrom its Galvalloy® metallic coating, its highperformance primer and its topcoat whichcontains polyamide beads.

These layers also provide excellent scratch andabrasion resistance for easier handling andprocessing.

Scratch testsThe scratch test method is a technique thatapplies critical loads to a sample to test atwhat point failure appears, testing thecohesive and/or adhesive properties of pre-finished steel. During the test, samples ofColorcoat Prisma® were scratched with aneedle which was drawn at a constant speedunder a progressive load.

The test was concluded when sufficientweight was added to cut through theColorcoat Prisma® sample revealing itsmetallic coating. The more weight recorded, the greater the resistance of the topcoat.Colorcoat Prisma® was tested alongside atypical PVDF, and an alternative equivalentproduct.

The results shown in figure 10 illustrate thatconsiderably less weight was required toexpose the metallic coating underneath boththe alternative equivalent and the PVDFcoating. As a result of the polyamide beads in

the topcoat, Colorcoat Prisma® performedextremely well during the test demonstratingits excellent scratch and abrasion resistance.

Falling sand testAbrasion resistance is commonly tested by the‘falling sand’ test to ASTM D968:2001. This testmeasures the stream of falling sand requiredto wear through an organic coating system inorder to determine its resistance. The test isconcluded once the metallic coating isexposed and the quantity of sand is recordedin litres.

Colorcoat Prisma® was tested against a typicalPVDF coating. The results of the test areshown in figure 11 below.

As shown, considerably more sand wasrequired to expose the substrate on theColorcoat Prisma® sample – demonstrating itsexcellent abrasion resistant properties.

Natural weatheringNatural weathering testing is an essentialpart of testing the corrosion resistance of apre-finished steel product. Colorcoat Prisma®has undergone a comprehensive programmeof testing in key weathering climates aroundthe world. Exposure sites were chosen inorder to provide the full spectrum ofweathering zones from equatorial andtropical climates to urban, rural, industrialand coastal locations.

Colorcoat Prisma® was tested at; Florida,Arizona, Australia, Singapore, Bohus Malmon,Brest and at sites in the UK to assess corrosionresistance. This has enabled us to build up acomprehensive assessment of theperformance of Colorcoat Prisma® in a widerange of extreme climates.

Colorcoat Prisma® has undergone extensivecorrosion testing in accordance with theEuropean Standard EN 10169:2010;‘Continuously organic coated (coil coated) steelflat products’.

Figure 13. RC5 Certificate for Colorcoat Prisma®

Samples of Colorcoat Prisma® were exposed tothe extreme coastal environment at Brest onthe West Coast of France in order to assesscorrosion resistance.

The European Standard requires the samplesto have more than 2 years exposure at the siteduring which time they must be able to resistblistering, coating damage and exhibit anedge peel <2 mm in order to achieve RC5corrosion rating, the highest corrosionresistance classification.

After independent assessment, The FrenchCorrosion Institute concluded that all colours inthe Colorcoat Prisma® range achieve RC5corrosion rating in accordance with EN10169:2010. An example of one of theColorcoat Prisma® test panels is shown in figure12. This shows virtually no edge peel, and nosurface damage or blisters after 2 yearsexposure.

Accelerated corrosion testsSamples of a representative selection of thecolour range were put through a series ofrigorous tests designed to predict thecorrosion resistance of Colorcoat Prisma® indifferent environments - coastal (salt spray),humidity, prohesion (cyclic wet and dry), andKesternich (acid rain). The tests are symbolicand are far more aggressive than would beseen in real world situations.

Samples of Colorcoat Prisma® with one edgeexposed, and a cross scribed into the coatingto simulate site damage were placed in UKASaccredited test chambers for the required testduration. The results of these acceleratedcorrosion tests are given in table 2, where thetypical extent of any delamination from boththe cut edge and scribe, together with theextent of any blistering or paint surfacedegradation is recorded.

Representative photographs of ColorcoatPrisma® in matt Terracotta after 1000 hourstesting in this suite of accelerated tests areshown in figures 15 to 18.

Both saltspray (continuous fog of sodiumchloride) and prohesion (cyclic phases ofsodium and ammonium chloride fog followedby a drying cycle) are extremely aggressiveaccelerated corrosion tests yet the extent ofpaint delamination at both the cut edge andscribe is minimal.

Following 1000 hours, in the humidity andwater soak tests, no blistering or significantpaint delamination is observed indicatingexcellent paint adhesion between theGalvalloy® metallic coating and organic layersof Colorcoat Prisma®.

As can be seen from the typical results and infigures 15 to 18, the performance of ColorcoatPrisma® in the suite of accelerated corrosiontests is excellent and demonstrates how wellthe Galvalloy® metallic coating in combinationwith the Colorcoat Prisma® paint systemprotects the steel.

A pre-finished steel must resist thedamaging affects of Ultra-Violet (UV)degradation where a deterioration in boththe colour and gloss retention are precursorsof paint degradation. Consequently theability of a paint to maintain both colour andgloss are seen as indicators of the longevityof a paint system.

UV resistance testingTo meet the requirements of RUV4 samples areexposed to artificial QUVA radiation for 2000total hours, or exposure for 2 years at anaccredited weathering site with a cumulativeUV radiation in excess of 4500 MJ/m2 per year.

EN 10169:2010 stipulates for RUV4 thepercentage gloss retention (GR) must begreater than 80% after each test, and theextent of colour change must be < 2 ΔE forartificial UV testing and < 3 ΔE followingnatural weathering exposure. In both tests,Colorcoat Prisma® easily meets theserequirements in terms of the stipulated colourand gloss retention.

Figure 19. Tata Steel weathering site, Arizona(desert)

The superior UV resistance of ColorcoatPrisma® has been independently verified byATLAS following exposure at their Floridaweathering facilities.

Samples of Colorcoat Prisma® have completedover 6000 total hours in the QUVA test andboth gloss retention and colour changeassessed. Even after this extended testing

period, Colorcoat Prisma® solid, metallic andmatt samples have a colour change of lessthan 1 ΔE as can be seen in figures 20 and 21.

Following the tests, the complete colour rangeof Colorcoat Prisma® has been classed as RUV4,providing reassurance to the client that itsspecification will result in a building retainingits true colour for longer.

EN 10169:2010 defines the testmethodology and classification for UVresistance, products can be classified fromRUV1 to RUV4 – RUV4 being the most extreme.

Samples of Colorcoat Prisma® Silver Metallic(RAL 9006) and Orion have been exposed atthe Atlas weathering site in Florida for 5 years. As can be seen from Figures 23 and 24, afterthis 5 years exposure the ΔE is less than 1,which is typically not noticeable with thehuman eye, and the % gloss retention isapproximately 80. These exposuresdemonstrate the excellent colour stability ofColorcoat Prisma® in long term demanding UVenvironments.

The photographs in Figures 25 and 26 showthe actual samples after the 5 years exposureagainst the unexposed Colorcoat Prisma®again indicating the excellent colour stability.

Fire performance is a fundamentalrequirement when considering theperformance of a building in a potential firesituation for Building Regulations andinsurance requirements.

UK Building RegulationsFollowing a decision to harmonise standardsin the construction sector across Europe, newEuropean standards have been introducedinto the regulations. At present in the UK,there is a period of co-existence of standardsand either EN Standards or BS 476 can be usedto demonstrate compliance.

Wall applicationsBritish Standard tests

1. Surface spread of flame productsBS 476 Part 7 ‘Method for classification ofsurface spread of flame of products’, specifiesa test method for measuring the lateral spreadof flame along the surface of the sample. Theclassification system is based on the rate andextent of the spread of flames (results areclassified from 1 the best, to 4 the worst).

When tested, Colorcoat Prisma® has a Class 1surface spread of flame.

2. Fire propagationBS 476 Part 6. ‘Method of test for firepropagation of products’ - The test specifiesthe procedure for measuring the firepropagation indices of the product.

When tested, Colorcoat Prisma® has a firepropagation index I = 3.2 and a sub index i1 = 2.0.

3. Class 0 SurfaceA Class 0 or “low risk” surface is defined in theBuilding Regulations as having a Class 1surface spread of flame and fire propagationindices I ≤ 12 and i1 ≤ 6 or is composedthroughout of materials of limitedcombustibility.

Colorcoat Prisma® meets the requirements fora Class 0 surface.

4. Fire resistance of external walls andinternal compartmentationBS 476 Part 22 ‘Fire resistance of non-loadbearing elements’ test measures theperformance of a wall when exposed to heaton one face from a furnace with a definedtemperature characteristic.

Colorcoat Prisma® can be used in wallcladding systems which are assessedaccording to BS 476 Part 22.

European Standard tests

Euroclassification - Reaction to fireReaction to fire classification is carried out inaccordance with EN 13501. Colorcoat Prisma®has been tested to the following Europeantest standards.

EN 13823, often referred to as the singleburning item test.EN 11925, a small flame igniteability test.EN 1716, measurement of calorific value.

When tested in a configuration as defined inEN 14782, Colorcoat Prisma® can be classifiedas A1.

Roof applicationsBritish Standard tests

External fire exposure roof testThe performance of roof systems to resist firespreading to the roof of a building, from a fireoutside the building itself, is assessed bytesting samples of the roof in accordance withBS 476 Part 3.

The test rates the resistance of the roofstructure to fire penetration with results ratedfrom A (best) to D (worst), and the spread offlame across the roof again with results ratedfrom A (best) to D (worst).

When tested as an external roofing claddingsystem, Colorcoat Prisma® achieves Class AAwhich is the highest rating.

European Standard tests

Euroclassification - External fire performancefor roofs/roof coveringsEN 1187 defines a number of different testmethods for assessing the performance ofroofs/roof coverings. Performance is ratedfrom B ROOF (best) to F ROOF (worst). EN 1187test method 4 is based on BS 476 part 3 and isthe only method accepted in the UK.

When specified as an external roofingcladding system, Colorcoat Prisma® achieves aClass B ROOF.

EN 1187 test methods 1, 2 and 3 are usuallyspecified in Europe, dependant upon thelocation.

EN 1187 test method 1 German testEN 1187 test method 2 Nordic testEN 1187 test method 3 French test

Colorcoat Prisma® when used inconfigurations covered by EN 14782 isdeemed to satisfy without the need fortesting, the requirements for external fireperformance in accordance with CommissionDecision 2000/553/EC.

Insurance requirementsInsurance companies often specifyadditional fire performance criteria and/ortests which building components must meet.Cladding systems that meet therequirements of these tests are seen aspresenting a lower level of fire risk.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) whichuses the Loss Prevention Certification Board(LPCB) assessment, and FM Global who havetheir own FM Approvals, are the two mainbodies that undertake testing.

ABI and Loss Prevention Certificate Board(LPCB)The LPCB specifies two separate standards:

• LPS 1181 Fire growth tests

• LPS 1208 Fire resistance

Figure 28. Example of material during an LPS 1181 test

FM Global and FM ApprovalsFM Approvals is the testing and certificationbody for FM Global.

It applies to two separate standards forassessment of wall systems and panel roofs:

• 4881 Approved Standard for Class 1Exterior Wall Systems

• 4471 Approved Standard for Class 1Panel Roofs

The standards cover a number of keyperformance criteria including fire, wind, traffic, hail and water-tightness.

Colorcoat Prisma® is the first pre-finishedsteel manufactured in the UK to beregistered with the Water RegulationsAdvisory Scheme (WRAS) for cold water use.

WRAS ApprovalColorcoat Prisma® having passed the testsundertaken by the Water Quality Centre, ofeffect on water quality, is suitable for use incontact with potable (drinking) water.

This approval enables all colours of thestandard colour range of Colorcoat Prisma® tobe used as part of a rainwater collectionsystem without any detrimental effect to thewater quality. It also means that it is suitablefor use in drinking water storage tanks.

Any product or fitting in contact withwholesome water in the UK, must comply withThe Water Supply Regulations 1999. As an Actof Parliament this is a substantial documentbut in summary the product or fitting shouldnot ‘waste, misuse, cause undue consumptionor contaminate water supplied by anundertaker’. The Water Act 2003 defineswholesome water as water used for drinking, cooking, washing or sanitary purposes. AWRAS Material Approval demonstrates that aspecific material or component does notcontaminate the wholesome water andtherefore satisfies that particular requirementof The Regulations.

The test methods and criteria used by WRASto assess non-metallic materials are describedin BS 6920:2000 ‘Suitability of non-metallicproducts for use in contact with water intendedfor human consumption with regard to theireffect on the quality of the water’.

The BS 6920:2000 Standard tests for:

• Impact odour/flavour on the water.

• Cause change in the appearance of thewater (colour, turbidity).

• Growth of micro-organisms.

• Extraction of substances which may beharmful to human health.

• Extraction of metals.

WRAS approval does not strictly apply to useof rainwater harvesting, but it offers anyprospective clients peace of mind with theknowledge that Colorcoat Prisma® does notcontaminate wholesome water so it will notcontaminate the harvested water.

Colorcoat Prisma® is included in the WRASonline directory www.wras.co.uk

Colorcoat Prisma® Sustainability

28 Copyright Tata Steel 2013 www.colorcoat-online.com

Sustainability in terms of material usage, construction, occupation and end of life hasbecome an important consideration in thedesign and specification of buildings. Ourcommitment to sustainable practice isexemplified in the development, manufacture and support of ColorcoatPrisma®.

Increasing focus on sustainability is beingdriven by factors such as legislation, consumerpressure and a desire to provide a betterquality of life for people withoutcompromising the future. We have an ongoingcommitment to reduce CO2 emissionsassociated with pre-finished steel manufactureand we work with leading experts to ensurethat both Colorcoat® products, and the roofand wall cladding systems that they are part of,contribute to sustainable building envelopesolutions - now and in the future.

Steel manufactureTata Steel is continuing to work hard tosubstantially reduce the embodied CO2 in itssteel products. We have a climate changestrategy with a clear objective to reduce CO2

emissions from steelmaking by 20% by 2020.This is being delivered through a mix of majorand smaller investment projects, goodhousekeeping and burden optimisation insteelmaking.

We are also working on a long-term ‘Ultra LowCarbon Dioxide Steel’ project with otherEuropean steelmakers to identify a step changereduction in CO2 emissions in excess of 50%.

The steel used in Colorcoat Prisma® is made byTata Steel at Port Talbot in South Wales where£60 million has been invested to capture the‘offgas’ generated in steelmaking for use as anenergy source. As well as significantlyreducing electricity and natural gasrequirements, the scheme reduces the plant’sCO2 emissions by 3% per year.

Colorcoat Prisma® manufactureColorcoat Prisma® is manufactured at the TataSteel site at Shotton in North Wales. AtShotton our strategies to deliver significantreduction in site CO2 emissions have included:a move from road to 100% rail for all feedstockcoming from Tata Steel in South Wales; a focuson process and operational energy reductioninitiatives such as installation of variablespeed drives, energy-efficient lighting andparticipation in an ‘energy from waste’ scheme.

Colorcoat Prisma® uses steel made by TataSteel from a combination of recycled steelscrap and molten iron. At Shotton we settargets to ensure the efficient use of materialssuch as Zinc and paint to minimise waste.More than 95% of our Zinc pot waste isreclaimed and recycled. Solvents used forwashdowns are filtered, distilled and returnedto us as a 50% recycled blend.

Sustainable design and useA key part of sustainable design is specifyingproducts that offer long-term performanceand minimised emissions during the life timeof the building.

We have worked closely with the leadingarchitectural school at Oxford BrookesUniversity to study the operational impacts ofa building and identify the contribution thatpre-finished steel cladding can make to itsefficient running. This work has found that theoperational CO2 of a building can far outweighthe embodied CO2 associated with thebuilding fabric and construction. On very largebuildings it can account for as much as 80% oftotal CO2 of the building life cycle.

Optimising the building envelope efficiencythrough insulation, high air-tightness levelsand the minimization of linear thermalbridging can reduce the operational impacts. We have provided best practice advice andguidance on detailing in our Colorcoat®

technical papers so that cladding systemsmanufactured using Colorcoat Prisma® canreduce the associated heat losses from thebuilding envelope.

All Tata Steel supply chain partner roof andwall cladding systems in the UK have detailsdesigned and modelled to improve thethermal performance of the building. For more information visit www.colorcoat-online.com/technical

Investing in sustainable buildingenvelopesTata Steel, together with the Low CarbonResearch Institute and Welsh AssemblyGovernment, has invested £6 million in thecreation of a ‘Sustainable Building EnvelopeCentre’ at the Tata Steel site in Shotton, NorthWales. The aim is to create a constructionprocess which will enable the façade ofbuildings – both roof and walls – to betransformed from a passive energyconservation role to an active energygeneration, storage and management function.

Tata Steel Europe is also the lead industrialpartner in an academic and industrialconsortium led by Swansea University that isworking on a multi-million pound project todevelop hi-tech, sustainable, coated productsfor building envelopes. The project, namedSPECIFIC (the Sustainable Product EngineeringCentre for Innovative Functional IndustrialCoatings) aims to develop a portfolio ofproducts that will turn buildings into powerstations to generate over one third of the UK’srequirement for renewable energy by 2020.

System environmental assessmentIn the UK all roof and wall systems using pre-finished steel achieve a Green Guide A+ rating.Manufacture and processing of ColorcoatPrisma® into building envelope products, through our approved supply chain, canmaximise credits assessed through BREEAM.

Colorcoat Prisma® is exclusively from Tata Steeland, as such, is fully traceable. Ourmanufacturing site has an environmentalmanagement system which has been certifiedto ISO 14001.

End of lifeWhen the building envelope comes to the endof its life, there are options to either extend it'slife further or ensure that it is disposed ofsafely and with minimum impact botheconomically and environmentally. By usingappropriate maintenance and remedial actionsuch as over-painting, Colorcoat Prisma® canlast almost indefinitely. If corrective action isnot an option there is a well established andvery efficient infrastructure which ensures thatall steel collected at end of life goes back intosteel manufacture. This means that theinvestment in steel-making is never wasted, making steel the most sustainableconstruction material.

Colorcoat Prisma® is truly recyclable withoutany loss of quality, time after time. This makesColorcoat Prisma® a cradle to cradle product inthat, at the end of its life, it can be reused orrecycled rather than be disposed of as waste.

Life cycle assessmentWe take a holistic approach to understandingand minimising the environmental impactsover the whole life of the building. Thereforewe constantly strive to ensure that themanufacturing processes and materials usedto manufacture Colorcoat Prisma® are

the most sustainable available. Moreover it'senhanced robustness and durability meansthat it significantly outperforms other pre-finished steel in terms of environmentalimpacts over the full life cycle.

To demonstrate environmental impacts and toallow you to make detailed comparisons andinformed decisions when purchasingconstruction products, Tata Steel has carriedout comprehensive life cycle assessments on awide range of cladding systems using ColorcoatPrisma®. For further details please visitwww.colorcoat-online.com/sustain

Confidex Sustain®A cradle-to-cradle analysis of the life cycle forColorcoat® assessed cladding systems meansthat the products environmental impacts arefully measurable and traceable. You can easilyaccount for carbon emissions during both theconstruction and use of the product and canbe assured that when selecting ColorcoatPrisma®, emissions have been understood andminimised at each stage.

BES 6001 Responsible Sourcingstandard Many companies are recognising the need toprove that they are building with sustainabilityin mind. One way in which manufacturers canhelp is through responsible sourcing.Responsible sourcing provides an approach tomanaging a product from the point at which amaterial is mined or harvested in its raw statethrough manufacture and processing, use, re-use and recycling.

Through its commitment to sustainability and by managing its environmental impactsTata Steel are leading the way as the first pre-finished manufacturer to secure BES 6001certification for its Colorcoat® productsManufactured at Shotton including ColorcoatPrisma®.

Deeside Leisure Centre

Is a multi-million pound project to improvethe facilities at Deeside Leisure Centre and toreduce the overall energy consumption ofthe building. Colorcoat Renew SC®, an activesolar air heating system from Tata Steel, hashelped the Centre to reduce operationalcosts, improve the building’s environmentalperformance and supply clean, fresh air toprovide the optimum environment foroccupancy comfort.

Colorcoat Renew SC® captures heat from thesun and draws it into the building through amicro perforated Colorcoat Prisma® collectorinstalled as an additional skin onto thesoutherly facing wall.

The pre-heated fresh air can then bedistributed directly into the building asventilation air or ducted to the main heatingsystem to reduce energy load.

Chatterley Valley

If you think you know what a warehouselooks like, even a quick glimpse at theChatterley Valley Blue Planet distributionwarehouse in Newcastle-under-Lyme, NorthStaffordshire, will confound yourexpectations. Where most warehouses arerectilinear this one is sinuously curved; wheremost are of a single dull colour, this one isclad in stripes and different shades of green.

Using 260 m2 of Colorcoat Prisma® in SlateGrey as the solar collector, combining inherentdurability with proven superior absorptionrates for maximum collector efficiency. Thesystem is expected to provide 70 MWh solarradiation and 40 MWh reduction of thermallosses each year, equating to payback in less

There were two drivers of this design. Onebeing the desire to make the building asenvironmentally friendly as possible. The otherwas to fit as unobtrusively as possible into aninhabited area with a building that manywould view from above, from housing onnearby hillsides.

The building utilised Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra®for the roof and Colorcoat Prisma® for thewalls. Colorcoat Prisma® was consideredcarefully not only for its superior aestheticsbut also its environmental credentials.

The architect looked very carefully at thesourcing of materials, selecting whereverpossible those that had an A or an A+ rating inBRE Global’s Green Guide to Specification.Colorcoat Prisma® has since secured BES 6001certification for responsible sourcing, providing the ultimate assurance that the

than 10 years providing benefits to for years tocome.

This project is an excellent example of howthe building fabric can be utilised to improvethe sustainability credentials of both new andexisting buildings.

pre-finished steel is sourced sustainably andcan also qualify for credits within BREEAM. Allmaterials were considered not only in terms ofhow they were sourced but also of how theywill eventually be disposed of, ColorcoatPrisma® was ideal as it is truly recyclablewithout any loss of quality, time after time, atthe end of its life it can be reused or recycledrather than be disposed of as waste.

All these factors contributed to this buildingbeing the first of its type to achieve a BREEAM‘Outstanding’ rating.
