Color can be used to evoke powerfu emotions and can create moods and feelings. Many artists use color to express

emotions, based on personal associations and experiences in their lives. Color also falls under the elements

and principles of design.

Let’s Review A Few Things...

What are complementary colors? Colors that are opposite each

other on a color wheel (red-green, blue-orange,

yellow-purple) What are primary colors? Red, yellow, and blue

Warm colors are reds, yellows, and oranges Cool colors are blues and greens

RED is often associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.

ORANGE combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics, enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, and stimulation.

YELLOW is the color of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.

GREEN is the color of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional relationship with safety.

BLUE is often associated with depth and stability. It can symbolize both calm and sorrow.

PURPLE combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. It can symbolize power, nobility, luxury, and ambition, and is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic.

WHITE is associated with light, goodness, innocence, and purity. It often has a positive connotaion

BLACK is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery. It is often associated with fear and the unknown (black holes) and can have a negative connotation.

Tips when your painting...

Light and bright colors can often create positive moods

Dark and muted colors can often create

somber, dull or darker moods Remember that these are just general

rules, there are no right or wrong ways of creating a mood/emotion with your colors

2) Write this word down on the back side of your paper

3) In pencil, lightly draw your image. This can be a landscape, an object, a person, or abstract.

4) Begin painting! Remember to choose/mix colors that you feel express your chosen mood or emotion

5) Share your painting with us!!
