Dear Brother Knights,

Brothers as we start this month of December, let us

all pause for a moment and understand the true

meaning of why this is such an important season for

all Catholics. Sure I agree it is a time of celebrations

when we all gear up to decorate our houses, plan

our shopping lists, parties and social gatherings but

we need to start with the basic; it’s a time for us to

think, reflect and prepare for our Lord’s coming. We

need to give Thanks to God for thinking of us and

planning our salvation by sending his only Son Jesus Christ into the world.

Let’s prepare for Christmas in a more spiritual way, also remembering that

this is a time for sharing. Remember there is a great joy in giving to

someone who has less or nothing and why our Order was formed by our

founder Venerable Michael J McGivney. He saw injustice and made a

change by giving to the widows and orphans and today we are blessed to be

one of the largest Catholic Men’s organisations.

You can see from our calendar that December is a month of giving back, and

I request you all to give your time and talent to help in some manner during

our events and participate with us in this holy season of Advent.

My family and I wish every one of you and your families a very holy, blessed

and peaceful Christmas, may the Lord keep you safe and bless you with

good health and happiness.

Vivat Jesus!

FIELD AGENT’S MESSAGE

Jose P. Cabalu, FIC, CHS Field Agent

Four Parts of Retirement: Phase Two

In a previous article, I discussed protection and how Knights of Columbus products can provide it for

you and your wife in your retirement years. The next phase of retirement is accumulation of cash.

Those life insurance policies you purchased, if they are permanent plans, carry a savings element that

helps with accumulation of wealth. Another good option is a Knights of Columbus retirement plan or

annuity with a guaranteed interest rate. After basic protection, you spend your working life preparing

not to work…for the day the paychecks stop. Factor in here also your pensions, government benefits

and other savings you’ve acquired over the years.

Some experts will tell you that you should prepare for retirement with a plan that calls for 70% of the

income you had pre-retirement. I think that falls woefully short. Plan on the 90% range. Consider this:

what are you giving up that translates to 30% of your income? You still have to eat, you will travel

more (going to see the grandchildren), taxes need to be paid, and on and on. Be careful of that 70%

arbitrary rule.

I can help you build a plan to reach your goals. Contact me today to me learn more at 778-837-2317 or

[email protected].

Merry Christmas!

On Sunday Nov 4th we attended the Necrology Mass for all our deceased brother knights of Council 6855. We are thankful to Fr. Rodney Nootebos, for remembering our deceased brothers and praying for them. The mass was well attended by our widows and members of the council.

After mass we all went to the Abercorn Inn for the Joint Council Brunch that was arranged for our deceased members’ wives and all members and families of District #23. We are grateful to the following; Margaret Vaz, Bea Puchalski, Alma Busseilla and Loretta Fox, for accepting our invitation to the brunch.

We look forward to doing this again in the spring of 2013 and hopefully have a better representation of our council members. Families and friends are always welcome.

Over the course of two weekends the Knights of Columbus 6855 of St Paul Parish, on the request of our Chaplin Msgr. Luterbach were actively involved in taking the census of the Sunday mass attendees. They could be seen outside all the entrances of the church with their counters making a note of all the people entering the church and it was evident that we lack the seating capacity as there are over 150 people standing at every mass if not more. We are already in the process of drawing up the blue prints for the new church and the parish committee is open to suggestions of what we feel our new church should look like. So here is a good opportunity to put your thoughts to paper and have a say in the building of our future church.

Movie night

On Saturday Nov 3rd the members of Council 6855 and the parishioners got together in the parish gym to watch the much acclaimed movie ‘For Greater Glory’. Due to the weather conditions and a big ethnic basketball game in Vancouver our attendance was not as expected but nevertheless a group of around 45 including members of other councils of the lower mainland and Delta area came out to watch the movie.

The duration of the movie was 145 minutes and was so interesting that it seemed the audience were riveted to their seats as no one got up throughout the movie.

This movie is definitely worth watching and is a definite collection to add to your video library. We plan on showing it once again for the benefit of those that were unable to attend. Thank you all who attended.

At the stroke of midnight on Nov 4th 2012, the Knights of Columbus Council 6855 started

their vigil along with parishioners of St Paul Parish at BC Women’s Hospital & Health

Centre to end Abortion and to preserve the life of unborn children.

Once again our Vigil lasted 25 hours due to the daylight saving time rollback.

Members and families, friends and parishioners, young and old, all took turns in praying

throughout the wet and windy day. A special Thank-You to Sr. Guadalupe and

Sr. Maureen Theresa for joining us at 10.00 pm and leading the prayers for that hour.

Our 25th hour of vigil was graced by our Pro-Life Chaplin Fr. Rodney Nootebos, who led

us in prayer, by saying the Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Stations of the Cross.

All present kept a vow to pray for the unborn and would do all possible to preserve the

life of unborn and would convene again next Pro-Life protest day. A special Thank-

You to Lorenzo and Julie Ranada for their continuous time and effort in coordinating this

campaign.

On Sunday Nov 11th 2012 Grand Knights, Deputy Grand Knights and brothers from all 4 councils accompanied by our District Deputy, our 4th Degree Captain and State Communications & PR Chairman assembled at the City Hall to pay homage and offer prayers for our heroes who sacrificed their lives for the freedom and rights of all citizens of Canada. It was an honor to be present and lay a wreath at the cenotaph on behalf of the Knights of Columbus. It was also a great feeling to hear The Knights of Columbus being mentioned as a Community Service Organisation by the MC for the event.

Brothers let us congratulate Bro Rufino Lachica and his wife Vanessa as being chosen as the Family of the Month for November 2012. Bro Rufino fondly called Raffy by his friends had joined the Knights of Columbus in November 2010. He did his Major Degree in May 2011 and joined the Executive Committee in July 2011. Currently he is the Chancellor of our council and is the Chairperson for the District Charity Appeal. He is a regular usher at Sunday Mass, actively involved at Pancake Breakfast, Pro-Life issues, Canada Day Parade, Membership Blitz and the Sports Committee. He is eager to help and takes an active part in our various events throughout the year. His wife Vanessa was a member of the 9 am choir but has taken a break to look after their 2 kids Enzo and Anya. Nevertheless she is always active at our various events and also lends her voice at our functions and is a big support to her husband. Congrats Lachica Family, keep up the good work and be an inspiration for others to follow.

Family of the Month – Nov 2012

Knight of the Month – Nov 2012

Brothers let us congratulate Brother Sean Fox as being chosen as the Knight of the Month for November 2012. Brother Sean has joined our council this year in March; he did his Major Degree and is looking to do his 4th Degree next year. Bro Sean is an active member of our council and can be seen helping at all events ever since he joined. He took part in the Canada Day Parade, the Parish Picnic, the Polynesian Night, the Anniversary & Awards Night, various fund raisers, the parish census, just to name a few. Bro Sean is truly a Knight, always ready and willing to step up to the challenge and give a helping hand wherever required. Congratulations Bro Sean, keep up your good work and may the Lord bless you abundantly.

INTER-COUNCIL BASKETBALL

CHAMPIONSHIP 2012

Opening Day Ceremony….

On November 10th 2012 we held the inter-council basketball championship at St Paul Parish gym. The tournament lasted for just over a month and this was a great opportunity for all to meet the new members from various councils and at the same time share their love for sports. Our District Deputy Ed Panes was our representative from the State Council. He thanked all brothers who participated in the games and also those who worked behind the scenes; he also thanked our council for organising the games year after year for the enjoyment of all and for forging a bond between all the councils in District 23. Though we did not win the championship this year but it was great to see so many new members of Canadian Martyrs council. There was stiff competition between St Joseph and Canadian Martyrs. Eventually St Joseph proved to be the stronger of the two; Canadian Martyrs took second followed by St Paul and then St Monica. I would like to thank all our brother knights who took part in this event, the players, the team captains, their coaches and families who came to show their support and also a Big Thank You to the organising committee for a well-planned and well executed tournament. God Bless you for your hard work and dedication.
