Columbia Association of the Police Department, City of New York COLUMBIA NEWS Hello all of Columbia, I would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year. Let us try and make 2011 one of the best years for annual membership. Membership dues are one of the most important factors to any fraternal organization. These dues are the foundation of the organization. As many of you know, membership has slowed for the Columbia Association as well as for the other fraternal organizations. The cause of the decline remains unknown. It is imperative that we, as a whole, do our best to sign up as many members that we possibly can. There are a lot of Italians on this job but for some strange reason they do not want to join this fine organization. I think it is time for the seasoned members to educate the newer members to join. There is strength in numbers. The amount of affairs with Italian heritage is vast. Let us be proud of our heritage and let us show it though strong membership in the Columbia Association. Now let’s get down to business. My goal as your President is to increase the membership. I would like to accomplish this mission. I need all of the members’ help. All of the members have to be active stewards and try to sign up as many members as they possibly can. There should not be any excuses. If there are commands without a delegate, please notify the Columbia Board of Officers as soon as possible. We all know that members get transferred and retire all the time. These are the commands that fall into the cracks and do not have any members signed up. If you are interested in becoming a delegate or actively getting involved in this organization then you should notify the Board of Officers or come to a general meeting and make your wishes known. The Columbia Association is only as strong as the membership it represents. The Columbia Association has some great events scheduled for this year. Here is a list of upcoming events. On Friday March 18 th we will hold our annual Cigar Event at Club Macanudo. On Friday May 6 th , we will hold our annual Golf Outing at the Clearview Golf Course. On Friday May 13 th , we will hold our annual Dinner Dance at the El Caribe Catering Hall. On Friday June 17 th , we will hold our annual Fishing Trip aboard Captain Jim in Freeport Long Island. I wanted to share this online blog I read from David Morris, January 7, 2011

**************************************

As we enter the new year, many of us strive to make

positive changes in our lives. Unfortunately over time, most of us lose motivation and those goals are never met.

Here is an inspiring article I read which hopefully will give you more confidence in obtaining your 2011

resolutions. in “Nobody WANTS to set goals that they can’t accomplish. It’s not fun. Or rewarding. It sets up a sort of mental inertia where your mind stops taking goals seriously. So today, I’m going to share a few simple steps that can drastically increase the odds that you’ll achieve all of your goals. I’m not a motivational speaker…and I’m not going to throw in a lot of “fluff”. I’m simply going to tell you the techniques that I’ve learned through the years and actually use myself to create dramatic, lasting changes in my life on a constant basis. When I follow the steps I’m going to tell you, I get the dramatic, lasting change I’m af-ter. When I shortcut the process, I fall flat—just like everyone else. Make it emotional. Goals that are purely fact -based don’t pull you out of bed in the morning. Try to come up with reasons in your head of why your current situation is unacceptable . If you can’t figure out why achieving the goal will be emotionally rewarding, create a tangible reward for yourself.

Write it down. A goal that’s not written down has no more value than a fan-tasy. Writing down goals has a powerful effect of combining emotions, logic, and the senses of touch and sight. Getting that sheet of paper out every day, seeing them written in your own handwriting and reading them out loud to yourself is even more powerful.

Talk about it. Tell people what your goals are-if for no other reason than the fact that you may be willing to disappoint yourself but you will be less likely to be willing to share poor performance with friends and family.

Break it down. If your main goal is 2 months out, set monthly, weekly, or daily intermediary goals.

Track your progress. I like to use grid paper for this. I have the goals down the side, dates across the top, and I fill in my progress as I make it. For goals that take daily action, there’s nothing like a week of blank boxes to slap me in the face.

Set alarms. Set alarms on your phone or computer and schedule time in your day to accomplish your goals. Entropy (the tendency of things to move to-wards chaos unless acted on by an outside force) will always fill your schedule with “stuff.” You’ve got to cause order to happen by scheduling time to make your goals happen.

Stay consistent. Some goals, like getting out of debt or building up food stor-age don’t necessarily have daily components. Other goals, like reading, learn-ing, fitness, breaking habits, making habits, and relationship goals DO have daily action. The more frequently you can revisit your goal and take forward action on it, the more likely you’ll be to achieve it.”

I hope this can help you with your 2011 resolutions and please remember to keep Columbia in your plans.

Manhattan Anthony Burgio

In 2010, Manhattan had 312 active members. In 2011, our goal is to increase this number significantly with the assis-tance of our delegates and members, as well as to be able to hold more Columbia Asso-ciation events in our borough.

Brooklyn Louis Balsamo

Ciao my fellow Brooklynites ! For 2010 membership was slightly up. I hope we can con-vince all those that haven't paid there dues to pay them in 2011. My goal for 2011, as well as the goal of the organi-zation, is to reach those who are hesitant and get them to join the best fraternal organi-zation in the NYPD. Remem-

ber strength comes in numbers !

Queens Matthew Cioffi

Greetings to all of our true and trusted members! Spread the word to your fellow co-workers of the great times, great food and great people that one en-counters at our monthly meet-ings and marquee events. Now is the time to join and to be part of "what is the best thing on this job." See you all at the meeting ! Ciao!

Bronx Steven Berger

In the year 2010 membership in the Bronx was slightly up with 127 paying members. This number is still small in comparison to years past. It be-hooves all UMOS and Civilians in the Bronx with Italian ties to con-tact any of the Columbia Board members for further information on membership. Thank You

Staten Island John Peruffo

Greetings from the ROCK. Look for this year’s Staten Island Co-lumbia Association Event, The Five Boro Motorcycle Tour to Support the Anthony J. Venditti Scholarship Award. The ride is on Oct 2, 2011 rain or shine. Check our website to download a flyer and post in your command. Take pride in your heritage and come march in the Columbus Day Pa-

rade, Bus service provided from Edgewater Plaza. Carpool with us to get to the next general meeting. We meet at the VZ Bridge Monument.

Life Member Phil Repaci Sr.

I feel being a life member is an honor. It shows a dedication to an organization that does many good things for its members and their families. To become a life member one has to be a member in good standing for 35 years. That alone shows ones pride in their heritage and these mem-bers have become the backbone of The Columbia Association.

PAGE 4 Columbia News January - February 2011

I had the pleasure of speaking with Chief Joseph Esposito, our Chief of the Department (NYPD)

and member with the Columbia Association.

Q: Chief Esposito, what is your favorite Italian dish ?

A: I have two, chicken parmesan and lasagna.

Q: How do you keep Italian traditions present in your family ?

A: Christmas Eve dinner of seven fishes, St. Joseph Day on March 19, I celebrate my namesake’s day with my

family and friends by enjoying a dish of pasta and sardines (con sarde) and for dessert sfingi (little cakes filled

with ricotta, chocolate chips and orange rind). Columbus Day, each second Monday in October, my family and

I march in the NYC Columbus Day Parade. Practicing my Roman Catholic Faith and last but not least, each

year I crush grapes at home, make wine from it, and then bottle it. The men and women in my family, including my grandchildren, participate in this tradition.

Q: Who in Italian history has influenced you as a person and why?

A: Well, I would say it would be Joseph Petrosino. He was a New York City police officer who was a pioneer in the fight against organized crime, a man

deeply entrusted by the city’s immigrant families, a man looked up to by children in the street. Most of them were crushed together in the tenements of the

lower East Side and East Harlem, and they lived every day of their lives fearing that somehow they would come to the attention of the terrible Black Hand. It

wasn’t merely that he was a cop. With Petrosino, the sworn duty was a matter of private honor. He headed the “ Italian Squad,” an elite corps of Italian

American detectives created to combat the mafia which Petrosino saw as a shame to decent Italians. In four years Petrosino and his men sent more than 500

“Black Hand” members to prison. Petrosino was a man of firsts. He was the first officer ever to log more than 700 arrests per year. He was also the first offi-

cer to be officially recognized for introducing the techniques of disguise and working “plain clothes” in order to infiltrate criminal organizations. In 1909,

Petrosino made plans to travel to Palermo, Sicily, on a top secret mission. While on this mission, he was assassinated. Petrosino’s untimely death marked the

first and fortunately only time, a member of this Department was killed in the line of duty while overseas. The Italian cultural website ItalianAware, recently

named Petrosino “the most prolific Italian a American immigrant ever,” and I agree with their choice.

Q: Chief, what professional advice can you offer to our members of the association?

A: Don’t think about doing the right thing; Do the right thing without thinking.

Chief Joseph J. Esposito entered the New York City Police Department as a Police Trainee in August 1968. He was appointed to Police Officer in

April 1971 and began his career on patrol in the 77th Precinct. He was promoted to Detective in May 1983; Sergeant in September 1983; Lieutenant in Feb-

ruary 1986; Captain in June 1989; Deputy Inspector in August 1993; Inspector in October 1994; Deputy Chief in September 1996; Assistant Chief in Decem-

ber 1997 and Chief of Department in August 2000. Chief Esposito's vast experience includes serving in the 10th Precinct, 34th Precinct, 66th Precinct, 77th

Precinct, 83rd Precinct and the 109th Precinct, as well as the Narcotics Division and Detective Bureau.

Chief Esposito served as Commanding Officer of the Strategic and Tactical Command (S.A.T. COM), where he was in charge of all Patrol, Hous-

ing, Narcotics and Detective Operations in the Brooklyn North area. He has also served as the Commanding Officer of the 34th Precinct, 66th Precinct and

the 83rd Precinct. As the highest-ranking uniformed member, the Chief of Department is responsible for directing and controlling the daily operations of the

seven major enforcement bureaus within the New York City Police Department. In addition, Chief Esposito coordinates the crime control strategy meetings

in which senior commanders share tactical information and recommend plans of action to achieve crime reduction goals.

During Chief Esposito's tenure with the Department, he has earned some of the Department's highest medals and commendations, which include

the Combat Cross, Medal of Valor and the Medal for Exceptional Merit. Chief Esposito holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from the State

University of New York.

PAGE 5 Columbia News January - February 2011

I read an article by Karen Asp of Men’s Fitness online and though I would share it with you.

“YOUR MENTAL MUSCLE”

“Most of us don't worry about our mem-ory fading. But memory problems can arise early as your 20s, according to a new University of Vir-ginia study. After evaluating more than 2,000 men and women between the ages of 18 and 60 for seven years, researchers found that by the age of 27, brain speed, puzzle-solving capabilities, and abstract reasoning started to decline in most peo-ple. That doesn't mean you're doomed to not knowing your girl's name tomorrow. But it does indicate that your brain s one part of your body you need to keep fit. Here's how:

1. STAY ACTIVE Physical fitness may increase the size of your hip-pocampus—the region of the brain connected to long-term recall. Anything that gets your blood flowing works, but jogging and swimming appear to provide the best benefits to the brain.

2. EAT SMART What's good for your heart is good for your nog-gin, says Gary Small, M.D., author of iBrain. He advises loading your diet with antioxidant-rich foods (such as brightly colored fruits and vegeta-bles), plus omega-3 fatty acids from fish and olive oil.

3. ORGANIZE AND VISUALIZE Teach yourself mental cues. If you need to remem-ber several items, try arranging them into smaller units. Take your Social Security number. You probably know it by heart because it's already ar-ranged into groups of three, two, and four num-bers.

4. DON'T OVERDO IT Although technology can leave you scattered and mentally drained, it can also free your brain up from things that I don't need to be committed to memory, like phone numbers and birthdays (unless it's your wife's and kids' days; remember those!).

5. PLAY AND RELAX Contrary to what your mom says, video games won't rot your brain. Some—like the puzzle-filled Brain Age 2 for Nintendo DS—may even help to strengthen and train it. Kicking back and relaxing also reduces stress levels, which can boost brain-power”.

Chicken Piccata

Prep Time: 15 min Cook Time: 25 min Level: Easy Serves: 4 servings Ingredients • 2 skinless and boneless chicken breasts, butterflied and then cut in half

• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

• All-purpose flour, for dredging

• 6 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

• 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice

• 1/2 cup chicken stock

• 1/4 cup brined capers, rinsed

• 1/3 cup fresh parsley, chopped Directions Season chicken with salt and pepper. Dredge chicken in flour and shake off excess. In a large skillet over medium high heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter with 3 tablespoons olive oil. When butter and oil start to sizzle, add 2 pieces of chicken and cook for 3 minutes. When chicken is browned, flip and cook other side for 3 minutes. Remove and transfer to plate. Melt 2 more tablespoons butter and add another 2 ta-blespoons olive oil. When butter and oil start to sizzle, add the other 2 pieces of chicken and brown both sides in same manner. Remove pan from heat and add chicken to the plate. Into the pan /add the lemon juice, stock and ca-pers. Return to stove and bring to boil, scraping up brown bits from the pan for extra flavor. Check for seasoning. Return all the chicken to the pan and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove chicken to platter. Add remaining 2 tablespoons butter to sauce and whisk vigorously. Pour sauce over chicken and garnish with parsley.

Thanks Giada

A letter sent to me by retired Chief, Michael Scagnelli ;

“Dr. Howard Shapiro, author of Dr. Shapiro’s Picture Perfect Weight Loss books, is a great friend of the police and firemen as well. Numerous members of these departments have lost significant weight through Dr. Shapiro’s nationally recognized weight loss program, and the weight stays off. I lost 31 pounds and I feel oh so healthy. Dr. Shapiro is an honorary member of the Honor Legion and would love to help members of the Columbia Association by attending meetings and giving free advice to our members. Diabetes is a disease that some members and their families must deal with.”

After a 3 year break, Dr. Shapiro is back with a new bestseller—EAT & BEAT DIABETES WITH PICTURE PERFECT WEIGHT LOSS—a program not only for diabetics and pre-diabetics but anyone needing to lose weight, including children. His proprietary photographs of food comparisons are original and fresh, providing new information for dieting in a simple, user-friendly format.

• 23 million Americans have diabetes.

• 57 million Americans are pre-diabetic and don’t know it.

• One and a half million Americans suffer heart attacks every year.

• 50 million Americans have high blood pressure.

• One third of everyone born in 2005 will contract diabetes.

• 129 million people are overweight and at risk for diabetes.

The killer is diabetes, and it’s on the rise. The sixth most potent cause of death in the nation, diabetes afflicts another 2,200 Americans every day, damaging their sight, hearing, sleep, and mental health…tripling their risk of heart attack and stroke…diminishing their sexual performance and enjoyment…and potentially leading to blindness, amputations, and kidney failure. Adult onset diabetes is not only on the rise due to obesity in the adult population, but children at the age of 11 and 12 are now getting this adult form of diabetes. If you get diabetes before the age of 40 you may shorten your life by 11-14 years. If you get this disease at the age of 11 or 12 you will lose even more.

Ask any doctor or nutritionist who treats patients with diabetes: the first focus for controlling the disease is a healthy eating plan. But diabetic eating plans are usually all

about what you can’t eat.

Now Dr. Howard Shapiro, creator of the New York Times bestseller Picture Perfect Weight Loss, and renowned chef Franklin Becker (who is a diabetic) reveal the secrets to a diet that can actually help readers beat diabetes. You Can Eat and Beat Diabetes. It’s a type of eating that virtually guarantees not just control of the disease and a delicious satisfying of the appetite, but an emphasis on specific nutrients that actually target diabetes, beating back its potential side effects and maintaining the healthy weight that is key to controlling the dis-ease.

In Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss, Dr. Shapiro uses the same visual method of food comparisons that made his weight-loss books so popular and easy to use. You’ll find:

Dr. Shapiro’s Beat Diabetes Pyramid-a simple way to understand the food groups that fight diabetes and help you lose weight.

50 recipes from the nation’s premier chefs—ranging range from simple to sophisticated, so anyone can make tasty meals regardless of time or skill.

A 7-day sample meal plan.

More than 275 full-color photographs of food comparisons.

Menus from restaurants and fast food chains.

I highly recommend Dr. Shapiro’s program and his new book Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss.
