2012 IN REVIEW

We’ve always known that the Columbus Region is special . Now the rest of the world is starting to understand why .

2012 was a good year for our region and thousands of citizens who had the opportunity to return to work, start

a business or expand their existing operation .

Success touched each of our key economic sectors and the result is a continued march upward toward our

10-year goals . Whether a new company joins our ranks or an existing company grows, opportunities are generated

for individuals and families . Last year, more than 100 companies made the positive decision to add jobs, invest in

our region and grow within one of our communities .

We’re keeping score and so is the nation . The Columbus Region is one of the top 10 metros in the country for the

first time in many years due to our growth . Recognition like that belongs to the job creators first, and secondly to

the private and public investors of Columbus 2020 . Without them, we would be passively awaiting what’s next,

instead of boldly claiming our preferred future .

Our commitment is to continue serving growing businesses while adjusting our tactics to fit each year’s challenges

Discover Financial Services will add a $76 million data center and create 162 permanent new jobs at its campus in New Albany .

sTORY

2012 ANNUAL REPORT

Marketing and Promotion - the multifaceted marketing strategy of Columbus 2020 garnered more than 200 million impressions and a 400 percent increase in website traffic . Key initiatives included a print and digital advertising campaign, national and international media relations, inbound media tours, and advertising and branding at key locations such as Port Columbus International Airport .

Global Outreach - Columbus 2020 executed 56 business development missions in more than 20 states and six international markets . These missions focused on meeting face-to-face with hundreds of prospective companies, site location advisors and other project influencers .

Existing Industry Outreach - Columbus 2020 and our regional economic development partners executed 455 visits with companies that have operations in the Columbus Region . These visits focused on identifying risks and opportunities with economic base companies .

focus on High-Growth Companies - Columbus 2020 and TechColumbus have partnered to design and execute a one-of-a-kind program called First Customer . Twenty-three companies presented to the steering committee, and a handful of these companies won meaningful contracts with local institutions . Growth and development of these young companies has been accelerated .

Project Management - the Columbus Region’s business development activities led to the identification and qualification of more than 250 projects managed by the Columbus 2020 team . A total of 111 companies announced new locations, expansions or retentions through December .

Convening of Industry Leaders - Columbus 2020 and its partners at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, the Mid-Ohio Development Exchange and the Columbus Partnership held dozens of meetings with public and private sector leaders to better understand the opportunities and challenges presented by the economy . The Franklin County Retail Summit was one such event, as was the Economic Development 411 meeting, which brought nearly 400 stakeholders together to discuss the economic future of the Region .

EDA Designation - Columbus 2020 coordinated with groups across the 11-county area to develop a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy that has been submitted and approved by the Economic Development Administration .

brookings Metropolitan Export Initiative - Columbus was selected to be one of eight regions in the United States that has the opportunity to work with The Brookings Institution to build a metropolitan export strategy, an important part of our regional economy .

IBM will create 500 high-tech jobs over the next three years with the opening of its Analytics Solutions Lab, positioning Columbus as a national and international center for big-data analytics .

sector companies that invest over $3 .8 million dollars annually .

• Public Investment – Columbus 2020 has more than 30 public sector investors from throughout the 11-county Columbus Region .

• JobsOhio Network Grant – Columbus 2020 is the recipient of a grant from the State of Ohio’s Third Frontier program to help leverage local public-private investment . The JobsOhio Network consists of five additional regional organizations that create a statewide network that helps to align the entire State of Ohio’s economic development efforts .

In 2012, Columbus 2020 had 275 projects started, 79 percent

higher than in 2011. There were also 73 first-time visits to the

Columbus Region by companies in 2012, 43 percent higher

than in 2011.

The number of active projects increased steadily throughout

2012 and reached a peak of 171 at the end of October. There

has been approximately a 60/40 split between new and

existing projects. Industry composition has also remained

steady throughout 2012, after a shift toward more office

projects between 2011 and this year.
