LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIRLEO KARL, I I I
AS A LIFELONG RESIDENT OF NEW CANAAN, I have a special
appreciation for what makes our community so unique.
Community is defined as “a feeling of fellowship with others,
as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests and goals.”
That feeling of fellowship is reflected here in New Canaan in
people who care deeply about one another and those around
them. We are a community where neighbors help neighbors and where individuals step
forward to volunteer for the greater good.
Today, an important piece of this fellowship resides within the New Canaan Community
Foundation. With your support, and under the tremendous leadership of past
President & CEO, Cynthia Gorey, the Community Foundation has grown from a small
charity in 1977 to the hub of local philanthropy it is today. During Cynthia’s 14-year
tenure, the Foundation vastly expanded our initiatives and giving. Today we offer
educational programming for everyone from teens to nonprofit leaders and distribute
more than $1 million in grants and life-changing college scholarships annually.
Our important work is made possible by the 900+ individuals, families, and
organizations who contributed to our 2015 Annual Appeal and the 120+ volunteers
who help us fundraise and review dozens of grant and scholarship applications. In this
way, the New Canaan Community Foundation is the perfect embodiment of this special
town’s spirit of generosity and fellowship.
Thank you. Your support helps us continue the charitable traditions of our town and
create a new legacy of giving for generations to come. The Foundation looks forward to
a bright future – and is proud to be led into the next phase of our success under our
new President & CEO, Lauren Patterson.

The Foundation offers a range of philanthropic and educational services to all residents.We collaborate
with donors to help each individual achieve their personal giving goals. Volunteer leaders guide our

All gifts to the Foundation,
of any amount, have a direct
impact on our community.
Since 1977, NCCF has given over $11 million in grants to worthy nonprofitsin New Canaan and throughout FairfieldCounty. We awarded more than $668,000in grants to 73 organizations in our mostrecent grant cycle.
Scholarships from the New Canaan Community Foundation have allowedhundreds of New Canaan students to pursue their college dreams.This yearalone, NCCF awarded $180,000 in scholarships to 63 students.
We work closely with local families to help them achieve their charitablegoals. Donors benefit from our deepknowledge of the community and thenonprofit sector.
The Community Foundation provides rich educational experiences for NewCanaan residents and nonprofit leadersthrough our philanthropic events and programs.
We represent the modern version ofold-fashioned charity – neighborslending a hand to help each otherand make our community a better
place for everybody.

FINANCIAL REPORT
NOTE: In 2015, the Board of Directors voted to change our fiscal year from a calendar year to a July 1 to June 30 year. The new fiscal year moreaccurately reflects our grantmaking cycle. The majority of our fundraising activities occur in the fall and the resulting grants are made in the following spring. By making this change in year end, our annual financial statements going forward will now include the grants disbursed in thesame fiscal year that the related funds were raised.
To reflect this change in fiscal year, this Annual Report covers an 18-month period from January 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016. As such, the financial information presented in this Annual Report includes three fiscal periods: January 1 to June 30, 2016, January 1 to December 31, 2015and January 1 to December 31, 2014. Our transitional short year for the six months ended June 30, 2016 shows a decrease in net assets as it includes the spring 2016 grant disbursements but not the majority of the income raised to fund these grants (which would arise from our fall2015 Annual Appeal and was recorded in the year ended December 31, 2015).
