Outline• background to the new ‘Come and See’ programme• the theological foundations and the structure of ‘Come and

See’• the process of ‘Come and See’• sample topics • other aspects of Come and See• introducing ‘Come and See’ in your school• further Diocesan support

What is the purpose of Religious Education?

“For all children Religious Education is a proper subject in its own right in the school’s curriculum. It is a rigorous academic discipline, and as such it is to be taught, developed and resourced with the same commitment as any other subject. For those already engaged in the journey of faith Religious Education will be catechesis, and for some children Religious Education will be evangelisation, the first opportunity to hear the good news of the gospel.”

(RE Curriculum Directory 1996)

‘Religious Education in the Catholic School’ Bishops’ Conference - January 2000

Religious education is about engaging with the deepest questions of life and finding reasons for the hope which is within them (1 Peter 3:15)•It is about the Christian vision of the person•It is the core subject which is central to the life of the Catholic school.Religious Education is the systematic study of the mystery of God, as discovered through the Bible and particularly through the life and teachings of Jesus Christ,•the teachings of the Church•the lives of the saints•the relationship between faith and life.

Expectations of Religious Education as defined by Bishops’ Conference

Religious Education requires•10% of the length of the taught week for each Key Stage•the unequivocal support of the management of every Catholic school•marked progression through the different stages of education•analysis, reflection and critical appreciation of sources•the encouragement of investigation and reflection•development of appropriate skills and attitudes which allows for a free, informed response to God’s call in everyday life•the use of skills in other areas of the curriculum

Expectations of Religious Education as defined by Bishops’ Conference

Excellence in Religious Education is characterised by

• clarity of succinct religious learning objectives• key content• appropriate methodology• rigour• richness of resources• achievement of identified outcomes• accurate methods of assessment

Outcome of Religious Education

Religiously literate young people who have the knowledge, understanding and skills – appropriate to their age and capacity – to think spiritually, ethically and theologically, and who are aware of the demands of religious commitment in everyday life.

Developing a new Religious Education Scheme

A review of Here I Am was carried out in 2006.

Responses included:• sound theology• insufficient content to meet the 10% requirement• activities not linked to levels of attainment and, in particular,

higher levels• little creativity• 4 year cycle not ideal

• writing group formed consisting of Diocesan Primary RE Advisers

• in September 2009 the first topic of the new programme Come and See was distributed to diocesan advisers for trialling in their schools

• 8 schools in our diocese took part in the trial and returned written feedback

• 614 responses nationally• the overall response nationally was very positive • feedback was used to inform the writing of the rest of Come

and See

Come and See trial

What’s in a name?Come and See is an invitation and a promise of life for everyone. The invitation is open to all.

In response to the question ‘Where do you live?’, Jesus invited the disciples to ‘Come and See.’ They went with Jesus ‘and spent the rest of that day with him.’

We recognise that for some childrenalready engaged in a journey of faith,RE is catechesis and part of their formation in the faith.

Those who receive the invitation to ‘Come and see’ may also offer it to others. Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well. She is so inspired by Jesus that she returns to her village as a witness to his love and invites the other villagers to ‘Come and see the man who told me everything I have ever done. Could he be the Messiah?’ (John 4:29)

In the same invitation we remember that for some of our children RE will be evangelisation, the first opportunity to hear the good news.

What remains the same as ‘Here I Am’?

• based on the documents of Vatican II and Catechism of Catholic Church

• the study, across each term, of : – Church– Christian living– The Sacraments

• the teaching process – 4 week topic• teachers’ theological reflection of each topic

What is different from ‘Here I Am’?• one year cycle• a teacher’s book for each year group • web based resources: www.comeandseere.co.uk• integrated attainment levels at the start and end of topic• use of driver words in some activities• explicit learning focus for each lesson in weeks 2 and 3• option for a Foundation approach for Years 1 and 2 • cross referenced to the new Religious Education Curriculum

Directory (to be published 2012)• recent liturgical revisions • reference to special needs support materials

Theological FoundationsCentral to the programme are three basic human questions and the three Christian beliefs that are the Church’s response in faith

JUDAISM ROSH HASHANAH,  YOM KIPPUR Year 6

Judaism is taught for one week every year. Each year the pupils learn more about how their Jewish sisters and brothers live and what they believe as the theme develops. The themes are the same for all religions.Teachers notes: Yom Kippur is probably the most important holiday of the Jewish year. Many Jews who do not observe any other Jewish custom will refrain from work, fast and/or attend synagogue  services on this day. The name “Yom Kippur” means “Day of Atonement,”. It is a day set aside to atone for the sins of the past year. There are 10 Days of Awe, before Yom Kippur to put thing right with others. On Yom Kippur, the judgment is sealed. This day is the last chance to demonstrate repentance and make amends.Prior learning: Pesach; the story of the Exodus from and the Shema Age group Theme Topic Look Discover RespectN/R FS 1-2 Special days/

Introducing Come and See

Suggested approach:• use the first week in autumn term to become familiar with

the scheme, the planning format and the website• introduce Come and See to children using powerpoint

available on Diocesan website• start Come and See Religious Education lessons in week 2 • share information with parents through ‘Come and See at

Home’

Sacramental Preparation

Reconciliation:In the Autumn term in the year 3 or 4 class it is suggested that the first two topics are shortened to three weeks. The Advent/ Christmas topic is introduced through Explore. The two week Reconciliation module will form the next two weeks of teaching. Teachers return to Reveal section of the Come and See topic and finish that as usual.

Eucharist:The four week Eucharist module will replace the Eucharist topic in the Spring term.

Mixed age classes

Teachers in schools with mixed age groups are skilled at adapting and implementing published schemes.

Consideration needs to be given to • taking account of assessment levels when developing

activities• tracking pupils’ experience of the topics to ensure full

coverage and to avoid duplication

Further Diocesan support• RE Co-ordinator days are focusing on Come and See:

autumn term – general supportspring term – CAFOD Universal Church topicssummer term – assessment and moderation(following these sessions RE Co-ordinators will be given, where appropriate, training materials to use in their own school)

• year group specific Come and See courses in spring term• planning sheets are being developed in collaboration with

Primary RE Advisers in Nottingham and Middlesbrough dioceses

Diocesan website

• parents’ termly letter• ‘I can statements’ – topic specific• planning grids• yearly overview• assessment materials

What’s the cost?

All teachers books are £45 each

Access to website is £66 per class

Every class will need access to a book and the online resources to use Come and See appropriatelyhttp://www.comeandseere.co.uk/

Closing Prayer

“God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. I shall do good and be a preacher of truth in my own place.”

Blessed John Henry Newman
