Pilot Test for Come, Follow Me: Living, Learning, and Teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, for Sunday School

Thank you for participating in this pilot test of Come, Follow Me: Living, Learning, and Teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This resource is an effort to improve gospel learning and teaching at home and at church. We hope you will have a wonderful experience using these materials.

WHAT IS COME, FOLLOW ME? Come, Follow Me is composed of five books:

◾ Come, Follow Me for individuals and families at home

◾ Come, Follow Me for Sunday School

◾ Come, Follow Me for Primary

◾ Come, Follow Me for Young Women and Relief Society

◾ Come, Follow Me for Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthood quorums

WHY THIS TEST? Under the direction of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the Church is explor-ing ways to (1) better help your family live and learn the gospel at home and (2) help your experiences at church better support your gospel learning at home. Your participation and feedback as a Sunday School teacher or leader and as a Church member will be very valuable.

WHAT MATERIALS SHOULD I USE FOR THE TEST?As part of this test, you are invited to use the following materials as you prepare to teach on Sundays:

1. Come, Follow Me for individuals and families at home. Each household in your ward or branch has received a copy of this book and has been encouraged to use it for gospel study at home (scripture study, family home evening, and so on). This book contains weekly study outlines that focus on specific chapters in the Book of Mormon and monthly study outlines that focus on single topics.

2. Come, Follow Me for Sunday School. This book contains lessons to be used in both youth and adult Sunday School classes. Each week’s lesson in this book is based on the Book of Mormon chapters that class members are studying at home that week in Come, Follow Me for individual and families.

Together, these two books will help you as you teach in Sunday School. They will also strengthen members in their efforts to learn and live the gospel at home.

For the period of the test, these two books will re-place your current Sunday School manuals, including the existing Come, Follow Me for youth. (The Gospel Principles class for new members, and any optional courses currently being taught during Sunday School, may continue unchanged.) After the test is over, you can return to teaching from the previous materials.

HOW DO I SHARE MY FEEDBACK? At least weekly, please share your experiences, comments, and suggestions. You will remain com-pletely anonymous, and you can comment as often as you would like. Thank you for your help. May the Lord bless you in your efforts to learn and teach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

To share your comments, go to lds.org/test/learn.

I Am a Teacher in the Church of Jesus Christ

I have been called of God to teach His children. I was set apart to this calling by the authority of His holy priesthood. I may not be formally trained to teach in the world’s way, but my calling is to teach in the Savior’s way. I qualify by living worthily, praying daily, and studying the scriptures.

As I do this, God grants me the influence and power of the Holy Spirit. Through that Spirit, He guides me during my preparation and while I am teaching. He reveals to me what I should say and what I should do.

I teach only the doctrine of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ as found in the scriptures and the words of latter-day prophets. Pure doctrine invites the Spirit and has the power to change lives.

And that is the essence of my calling—to change lives, starting with my own. I am never satisfied with simply

presenting a good lesson or impressing others with my abilities. My goal is the conversion of those I teach, a goal that extends far beyond our brief time together. So I invite those I teach to participate actively in their own learning. I encourage them to make their individ-ual and family efforts—outside of class—the primary focus of gospel learning. These acts of faith will invite the Spirit and affect their lives more deeply and perma-nently than anything I might do.

It is normal to feel overwhelmed at times. But I know that God called me, and He will never forsake me. This is, after all, His work, not mine. And as I serve with all my heart, mind, and strength, He enlarges my capaci-ties, gifts, and talents. The more I give in His service, the more I am able to give—and the more I can bless my family members, friends, and others I am called upon to teach.

Using Come, Follow Me for Sunday School

CREATING GOSPEL-LEARNING EXPERIENCESThe home should be the center of gospel learning. As much as it blesses a person to learn from the scriptures in Sunday School, as a Sunday School teacher you bless your class members even more if you help them learn from the scriptures individually and with their families.

This book is designed to help you create experiences in Sunday School that build upon, support, and encour-age meaningful gospel-learning experiences for your class members outside of class.

The best way to prepare to teach from the scriptures is to have your own experiences in the scriptures—indi-vidually and with your family—just as you encourage your class members to learn from the scriptures during the week.

USING THE LESSON OUTLINES Each lesson outline includes the following two sections.

Preparing to Teach in Sunday SchoolBefore exploring the teaching ideas in the lesson outline, spend some time seeking inspiration from the Spirit about which principles to emphasize from the assigned scriptures and how to teach them. This sec-tion invites you to follow this pattern as you organize your thoughts:

◾ Encourage sharing. For the first few minutes of class, invite class members to share their insights and experi-ences, as individuals or as families, with studying the scriptures each week. You may also review what your class discussed last week and ask how it has influ-enced class members’ lives. (Remind them not to share anything that is too sacred or too personal.)

◾ Teach the doctrine. You and your class members should focus on the doctrinal principles found in the assigned scripture passages. As you do, remember that some principles are stated explicitly, while others are taught through the events described in the scrip-tures. How do these scriptures help us understand the principles? What additional insights do we gain by understanding the storyline of the verses? What other resources give insight to the principles? What questions might you ask that will help class members understand and live the principles?

◾ Encourage sharing and learning at home. Preview next week’s discussion, and invite class members to study the assigned scripture passages, individually and as families, during the week.

Additional IdeasAfter you have studied the scriptures and prepared your ideas, you can explore the ideas in this section as needed to supplement your own ideas. These addi-tional ideas include:

◾ Scripture references and doctrinal principles.

◾ Invitations for class members to share what they have learned about the doctrinal principles.

◾ Activities to engage learners.

◾ Ideas for improving teaching.

◾ Stories, object lessons, pictures, videos, or music.

As you study and teach the principles of the gospel from the Book of Mormon,

you will see the Lord fulfill these promises in your own life and in the lives

of those you teach. President Ezra Taft Benson taught: “There is a power in

the book which will begin to flow into your lives the moment you begin a

serious study of the book. You will find greater power to resist temptation.

You will find the power to avoid deception. You will find the power to stay

on the strait and narrow path. . . . When you begin to hunger and thirst after

those words, you will find life in greater and greater abundance” (“The Book

of Mormon—Keystone of Our Religion,” Ensign, Nov. 1986, 7).

Preparing to Teach in Sunday School

Begin your preparation to teach by reading 2 Nephi 25:26; 28:30; Alma 5:45–46; and 3 Nephi 14:7–8 before studying any supplemental material. Prepare your teaching plan and record your thoughts and impressions. You might also use some of the ideas on the next page or in Come, Follow Me for individuals and families.

ENCOURAGE SHARING◾ How can you encourage class members to share insights they had as they studied these scriptures individually and with their families?

◾ What experiences have class members had as they acted on what they learned?

TEACH THE DOCTRINE◾ As you teach gospel principles from these scriptures, what verses, quotations, experiences, questions, and other materials might you share?

◾ How might you use these resources to help class members ponder the gospel principles?

◾ How can you encourage class members to record and act upon the impressions they receive?

ENCOURAGE SHARING AND LEARNING AT HOME◾ To help class members begin their study of the Book of Mormon this year, share something inspiring from the testimonies of those who saw the golden plates, and invite class members to read the introductory pages found at the front of the Book of Mormon during the coming week.

Additional Ideas

Matthew 11:28–30. The Savior invites us to learn of Him.◾ What experiences could we share that have taught us about Jesus Christ?

◾ When the Savior invites us to learn of Him, what does He want us to learn? As we read Matthew 11:28–30, what words or phrases do we find that teach about how to “learn of [Christ]”? How could we illustrate what a yoke is? A yoke is a beam used to harness two similar animals together, allowing them to share a burden. What could a yoke represent as we learn of Christ?

2 Nephi 28:30; 3 Nephi 14:7–8. We receive more knowledge as we ask, seek, and knock. ◾ How have we experienced the principles of asking, seeking, and knocking as we have sought to receive more knowledge?

◾ Latter-day prophets have repeatedly taught us about the process of receiving spiritual light and knowledge through revelation. To help start a discussion, you could divide class members into small groups to review portions of Elder David A. Bednar’s talk “The Spirit of Revelation” (Ensign or Liahona, May 2011, 87–90; see the following “Optional Resource”). What did each group learn from this talk about receiving revelation?

Alma 5:45–46. We must learn for ourselves.◾ Class members could choose one of the verses from this week’s study outline and share a thought about learn-ing based on that verse. It may help to write the verses on the board.

◾ What activities can we think of that require personal effort in order to master? These ideas could include learning to ride a bike, swim, play an instrument, or participate in a sport. Why is our own effort required in order to learn these skills? How do these examples relate to gaining our own testimony? As we review Alma 5:45–46, what do we learn from Alma’s example? How do we gain testimonies for ourselves? What are we doing to strengthen our testimonies?

OPTIONAL RESOURCECounsel from Elder David A. BednarElder David A. Bednar used the examples of a light switch being turned on and the sun gradually rising to illustrate important truths about receiving revelation:

“A light turned on in a dark room is like receiving a message from God quickly, completely, and all at once. Many of us have experienced this pattern of revelation as we have been given answers to sincere prayers or been provided with needed direction or protection, according to God’s will and timing. Descriptions of such immediate and intense mani-festations are found in the scriptures, recounted in Church history, and evidenced in our own lives. Indeed, these mighty miracles do occur. However, this pattern of revela-tion tends to be more rare than common.

“The gradual increase of light radiating from the rising sun is like receiving a message from God ‘line upon line, precept upon precept’ (2 Nephi 28:30). Most frequently, rev-elation comes in small increments over time and is granted according to our desire, worthiness, and preparation. Such communications from Heavenly Father gradually and gently ‘distil upon [our souls] as the dews from heaven’ (D&C 121:45). This pattern of revelation tends to be more common than rare” (“The Spirit of Revelation,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2011, 88).

Seek your own inspiration.Do not view these outlines as instructions you must follow. Rather, use them to get ideas or to spark your own inspiration as you ponder the needs of the people you teach.

Preparing to Teach in Sunday School

Begin your preparation to teach by reading the introduc-tory material in the Book of Mormon (the pages that precede 1 Nephi) before studying any supplemental material. Prepare your teaching plan, and record your thoughts and impressions.

ENCOURAGE SHARING AND LEARNING AT HOME◾ To inspire class members to study 1 Nephi 1–7 during the coming week, share one of your favorite verses from these chapters.

Additional Ideas

Title Page. The Book of Mormon strengthens our faith in Jesus Christ. ◾ What did we learn about Jesus Christ from our study of the title page of the Book of Mormon?

◾ As we read the title page of the Book of Mormon, what answers do we find to the following questions: What is the Book of Mormon? Where did it come from? Why do we have it? How has the Book of Mormon “convinced” us that Jesus is the Christ?

◾ Class members could pair up and share passages or stories from the Book of Mormon that have increased their testimony that Jesus is the Christ.

◾ Class members could also look for and mark references to Jesus Christ that are meaningful to them as they study the Book of Mormon this year.

Introduction. The Book of Mormon helps us “get nearer to God.”◾ Joseph Smith taught that the Book of Mormon will help us “get nearer to God.” How has this promise been fulfilled in our lives?

◾ There are many ways in which the Book of Mormon helps us “get nearer to God.” President Gordon B. Hinckley gave this promise as he challenged all Church members to read the Book of Mormon: “Regardless of how many times you previously may have read the Book of Mormon, there will come into your lives and into your homes an added measure of the Spirit of the Lord, a strengthened resolu-tion to walk in obedience to His commandments, and a stronger testimony of the living reality of the Son of God” (“A Testimony Vibrant and True,” Ensign, Aug. 2005, 6). In what ways have we experienced these blessings? What additional promises in the introduction inspire us to study the Book of Mormon?

“The Testimony of Three Witnesses,” “The Testimony of Eight Witnesses,” and “The Testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith.” We can be witnesses of the Book of Mormon. ◾ As we read the testimonies of Joseph Smith, the Three Witnesses, and the Eight Witnesses, what inspires us to share our testimonies? How do these statements strengthen our own testimonies of the Book of Mormon?

◾ We all have different experiences that shape our testimonies. How were the experiences of the Three Witnesses and the Eight Witnesses different from each other? To identify the differences, some of the class could study “The Testimony of Three Witnesses” while others study “The Testimony of Eight Witnesses.” Then they can compare what they learned. How do these accounts inspire us to be witnesses of the Book of Mormon? How can we share our witness of the Book of Mormon in our homes, families, and communities and on social media?

OPTIONAL RESOURCESVideo: “Book of Mormon Introduction” (LDS.org)

Watch Elder Jeffrey R. Holland discuss and bear testimony of the Book of Mormon. According to Elder Holland, how can the Book of Mormon bless our lives? What parts of his message strengthen our testimonies?

Hymn: “An Angel from on High” (Hymns, no. 13)

Consider singing all four verses of this hymn and then dis-cussing the following questions: What does this song teach about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon? How does it help us better understand what the introductory pages of the Book of Mormon teach?

Encourage class members to study the scriptures at home. One way you can encourage scripture study at home is to provide time for class members to share discoveries and insights from their personal and family study. You can also spend time discussing different ways class members study the scriptures.

Preparing to Teach in Sunday School

Begin your preparation to teach by reading 1 Nephi 1–7 before studying any supplemental material. Prepare your teaching plan, and record your thoughts and impressions.

ENCOURAGE SHARING AND LEARNING AT HOME◾ Ask class members to study 1 Nephi 8–11 and 15 during the coming week and look for two great visions about God’s plan for His children. What verses can you share to motivate them to read these chapters?

Additional Ideas

1 Nephi 2:11–21; 3:4–7, 28–31. We need our own testimonies.◾ What can we share from our reading that taught us the importance of developing our own testimonies?

◾ Our choices can affect the strength of our testimo-nies. To illustrate this, you could create a chart with two columns, one labeled for Laman and Lemuel and the other for Nephi and Sam. Some class members could search 1 Nephi 2:11–21; 3:4–7, 28–31, looking for phrases that describe how Laman and Lemuel reacted to Lehi’s vision. Other class members could search these verses for phrases that describe how Nephi and Sam reacted to the vision. Individuals could write these phrases on the board and then discuss what they noticed. What prevented Laman and Lemuel from having the same confirmation that Nephi and Sam had? What obstacles do we sometimes face as we strive to gain and maintain a testimony? How do our testimonies affect our individual journeys to our “land of promise”?

1 Nephi 3–4. God will prepare a way for us to do His will.◾ What did we learn from our study this week about the importance of obeying God’s commandments? What are some ways we can teach others, including our families, about obedience?

◾ What experiences have we had with following God’s will even when doing so was difficult? What verses from 1 Nephi 3–4 teach us how God prepares the way? Class members could share, in groups, pairs, or as a class, how they have seen God preparing a way for them when they have followed His will. What do we learn from Nephi’s and Lehi’s examples of obedience? (See also Proverbs 3:5–6.)

1 Nephi 5:10–22. The scriptures are “of great worth.”◾ What are some of the ways we can show the Lord that we value the scriptures? As a class, we could share our experiences with how we study the scriptures, individually and with our families.

◾ One goal of Sunday School classes is to encourage individuals and families to study the gospel. These chap-ters contain powerful teachings about the importance of the word of God. Discussing these teachings can help each of us lay a foundation for understanding why and how to study the Book of Mormon this year. What teachings do we find in 1 Nephi 1–6 that describe what the scriptures contain, why we should search them, and the blessings we will receive as we search them? Class members could make a list on the board of these teachings and the verses in which they are found (see, for example, 1 Nephi 6:4). How can we encourage each other to continue with the goals we have set to study the scriptures individually and with our families?

OPTIONAL RESOURCEHymn: “As I Search the Holy Scriptures” (Hymns, no. 277)

Consider inviting class members to read the words of this hymn and choose a verse that conveys a truth that they have personally experienced through their study of the scriptures. A few class members could share the verse that they chose and share their testimony of what it teaches. The class could then sing the hymn.

Help learners liken the scriptures to themselves. The same gospel principles that inspired Abraham, Esther, and Joseph Smith can help those you teach face modern-day challenges. To help learners liken scriptures to themselves, invite them to insert their names into 1 Nephi 3:7.

Partaking of the Love of God

Additional Ideas

1 Nephi 8:11–16. When we experience God’s love, we desire to help others experience it. ◾ What ideas about helping others along the path toward the tree of life came as we studied this week’s scriptures? (see 1 Nephi 8:15).

◾ Everyone hopes that their loved ones will partake of the love of God for themselves. What do we learn from Lehi’s experience? What can we do when family members seem uninterested in growing closer to God? How can we help them feel His love?

◾ To help class members understand and apply Lehi’s experience, they could taste something sweet and share what they would do to encourage others to come and enjoy what they have.

1 Nephi 8:19–38. The word of God leads us to the Savior and helps us feel God’s love. ◾ In what ways have we seen ourselves in Lehi’s dream? How has the iron rod, or the word of God, blessed us in our journeys toward eternal life?

◾ Lehi saw four groups of people (see 1 Nephi 8:21–23, 24–28, 30, and 31–33). What messages do we find for our families and ourselves as we read about each of these groups? How can we be more like the people described in verse 30?

◾ What insights do we gain from studying the depiction of Lehi’s dream found in this week’s outline in Come, Follow Me for individuals and families?

◾ How could we retell the story of Lehi’s dream? How does this help us apply the messages of the dream?

1 Nephi 11:16–33. God loves His children. ◾ What verses from this week’s reading have helped us feel God’s love?

◾ To help Nephi understand “the condescension of God” (verse 16), an angel showed Nephi a vision of the Savior’s birth, ministry, and Crucifixion (see verses 18–33). Are there any pictures, videos, or other visual aids that could accomplish the same purpose in class? (See, for example, biblevideos.lds.org.) How have we come to feel God’s love through His Son?

OPTIONAL RESOURCECounsel from Elder David A. Bednar“The central feature in Lehi’s dream is the tree of life—a representation of ‘the love of God’ (see 1 Nephi 11:21–22). ‘For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life’ (John 3:16). Thus, the birth, life, and atoning sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ are the great-est manifestations of God’s love for His children. As Nephi testified, this love is ‘most desirable above all things’ and, as the angel in his vision declared, ‘most joyous to the soul’ (1 Nephi 11:22–23; see also 1 Nephi 8:12, 15). Chapter 11 of 1 Nephi presents a detailed description of the tree of life as a symbol for the life, ministry, and sacrifice of the Savior—‘the condescension of God’ (1 Nephi 11:16).

“The fruit on the tree is a symbol for the blessings of the Atonement. Partaking of the fruit of the tree represents the receiving of ordinances and covenants whereby the Atonement can become fully efficacious in our lives. The fruit is described as ‘desirable to make one happy’ (1 Nephi 8:10) and produces great joy and the desire to share that joy with others.

“Significantly, the overarching theme of the Book of Mormon—inviting all to come unto Christ—is paramount in Lehi’s vision” (“Lehi’s Dream: Holding Fast to the Rod,” Ensign, Oct. 2011, 33–34).

Increase participation of class members.Almost any activity idea—answering questions, reading passages, or sharing ideas—can be done as a class, in small groups, or in pairs. Use a variety of methods to energize class members and allow people to participate who might otherwise not have a chance.

Begin your preparation to teach by reading 1 Nephi 12–14 before studying any supplemental material. Prepare your teaching plan, and record your thoughts and impressions. You might also use some of the ideas on the next page or in Come, Follow Me for individuals and families.

ENCOURAGE SHARING◾ How can you encourage class members to share insights they had as they studied these scriptures individually and with their family?

◾ What experiences have class members had as they acted on what they learned?

TEACH THE DOCTRINE◾ As you teach gospel principles from these scriptures, what verses, quotations, experiences, questions, and other materials might you share?

◾ How might you use these resources to help class mem-bers ponder the gospel principles?

◾ How can you encourage class members to record and act upon the impressions they receive?

ENCOURAGE SHARING AND LEARNING AT HOME◾ Encourage class members to read 1 Nephi 16–22 during the week. Invite them to think about how the story of Nephi building a boat can inspire and help them when they are required to do hard things.

Additional Ideas

1 Nephi 12–14. God will help us resist Satan’s influence. ◾ What impressions did we have about our place in God’s latter-day work as we read Nephi’s vision?

◾ In the vision recorded in these chapters, Nephi saw that the adversary would have great influence over the earth. He learned that the mists of darkness in his father’s dream represented the temptations of the devil. Why are mists a good symbol for temptations? Why is the great and spacious building a good symbol for the world? To under-stand these symbols better, you could divide these chapters among class members and invite individuals to search for verses that teach us how God will help us overcome the mists of darkness and the great and spacious building. For example, 1 Nephi 14:14 teaches that our covenants arm us with power.

1 Nephi 13–14. The Restoration overcame centuries of apostasy. ◾ As we read these chapters at home, what key events of the Restoration of the gospel in the latter days did we see? Which of these events have already taken place? Which events are happening now?

◾ People of other faiths may wonder why the Restoration of the gospel was necessary. How could we use 1 Nephi 13–14 to answer this question? (For example, see 1 Nephi 13:26–29, 35–42.) How has the Restoration blessed the world? What other scriptures could we use to help other people understand why the Restoration was necessary? (See also Isaiah 24:5; Daniel 2:44; Acts 3:20–22; Ephesians 1:10.)

1 Nephi 13:20–41. The Book of Mormon teaches us plain and precious truths. ◾ Class members could share verses from their reading of 1 Nephi 13:20–41 that answer the question, “Why do we need the Book of Mormon?” (See also 2 Corinthians 13:1.)

◾ How does 1 Nephi 13:20–41 help us understand why we need the Book of Mormon? Elder Tad R. Callister illustrated one way to help answer this question (see the “Optional Resource”). Consider inviting a class member to draw it on the board. What are some of the “plain and precious” truths that were lost from the Bible and restored by the Book of Mormon? (for some examples, see verses 26 and 39).

◾ The video “The Book of Mormon—A Book from God”(LDS.org) can help us find answers to the question, “Why do we need the Book of Mormon?” How could we answer this question?

OPTIONAL RESOURCECounsel from Elder Tad R. Callister“The Bible is one witness of Jesus Christ; the Book of Mormon is another. Why is this second witness so crucial? The following illustration may help: How many straight lines can you draw through a single point on a piece of paper? The answer is infinite. For a moment, suppose that single point represents the Bible and that hundreds of those straight lines drawn through that point represent different interpretations of the Bible and that each of those interpre-tations represents a different church.

“What happens, however, if on that piece of paper there is a second point representing the Book of Mormon? How many straight lines could you draw between these two reference points: the Bible and the Book of Mormon? Only one. Only one interpretation of Christ’s doctrines survives the testi-mony of these two witnesses” (“The Book of Mormon—a Book from God” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2011, 75).

The teacher is no better than the learner.Your role as a teacher is important, but you are not the sole source of inspiration in the class. Help class members learn from the Spirit and share with each other what they learn.

Additional Ideas

1 Nephi 16:14–39; 17:1–20, 50–51; 18:1–8. When I face chal-lenges with faith, God will provide direction and strength. ◾ What insights have we gained about overcoming our own trials as we read about Lehi’s family and their trials in the wilderness?

◾ To learn about how Nephi trusted in God during dif-ficult times, consider reviewing the following scriptures, individually or in groups: 1 Nephi 16:14–39; 17:1–20, 50–51; 18:1–8. What do we find in these verses? What similar experiences could we share from our own lives?

1 Nephi 16:29. God uses small means to accomplish great things.◾ What insights could we share from our personal study about how God guides us to accomplish His purposes?

◾ There are many examples of small things that have an effect more significant than their size would suggest, such as a germ, a bee, or the rudder of a ship. What other exam-ples could we share? The Lord also uses small things to do His mighty work (see 1 Nephi 16:29). What examples from this week’s chapters illustrate this principle? How has God used small means to accomplish great things in our lives?

1 Nephi 20–22. The words of Isaiah can be likened to us.◾ How have we helped our family members to “liken all scriptures” to themselves for their “profit and learning”? (1 Nephi 19:23). What ideas can we share with each other?◾ Many people struggle to understand the writings of Isaiah, but Nephi chose to quote him because he felt that Isaiah’s words were particularly relevant to his people and to us (see 1 Nephi 19:23–24). President Henry B. Eyring said, “Nephi picked the parts of Isaiah that I, without wor-rying about the imagery, could take directly to my heart as if the Lord were speaking to me” (“The Book of Mormon Will Change Your Life,” Ensign, Feb. 2004, 10). How can we use President Eyring’s counsel to find meaning in 1 Nephi 20–22? What verses from these chapters have strengthened our faith in Jesus Christ?

OPTIONAL RESOURCECounsel from President Dieter F. Uchtdorf“You are not forgotten. . . . Wherever you are, whatever your circumstances may be, you are not forgotten. No mat-ter how dark your days may seem, no matter how insignifi-cant you may feel, no matter how overshadowed you think you may be, your Heavenly Father has not forgotten you. In fact, He loves you with an infinite love.

“Just think of it: You are known and remembered by the most majestic, powerful, and glorious Being in the uni-verse! You are loved by the King of infinite space and everlasting time!

“He who created and knows the stars knows you and your name. . . .You are closer to heaven than you suppose. You are destined for more than you can possibly imagine” (Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Forget Me Not,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2011, 122–23).

Read 1 Nephi 21:15–16 with class members. How could you use this statement from President Uchtdorf or examples from Nephi’s experiences in 1 Nephi 16–18 to help class members who may feel forgotten by the Lord?

How can I help learners discover truths in the scriptures? Before a passage is read in class, invite learners to think about or look for something specific. For instance, you could say, “As we read this sripture passage, look for verses that you could share with a friend.”

Additional Ideas

2 Nephi 2:11–30. We are free to act for ourselves.◾ What verses from 2 Nephi 2:11–30 have we marked or made notes about? Why are those verses meaningful to us?

◾ How would we answer the question, “Why is agency important in Heavenly Father’s plan?” What answers do we find in 2 Nephi 2:11–30? What can we learn about agency in the hymns? (see the topical index in Hymns, 415–28).

◾ What insights can we share about agency from our study of agency in the topical section of Come, Follow Me for individuals and families?

2 Nephi 3:6–24. Joseph Smith was foreordained.◾ As a class, we could share how we use cross-references to deepen our study of the scriptures. For example, a good cross-reference for 2 Nephi 3 is Joseph Smith Translation, Genesis 50:24–38 (in the Bible appendix).

◾ Translating 2 Nephi 3 was likely a humbling experience for Joseph Smith. As we review this chapter, what do we find that strengthens our testimony of Joseph’s divine call-ing? What other thoughts do we have about Joseph Smith as we watch the video “A Seer Will I Raise Up”? (LDS.org).

◾ Why do we think the message in these verses is in-cluded in the Book of Mormon? What does Heavenly Father want us to learn from it?

2 Nephi 4:15–35. We can turn to God in our weakness.◾ What verses from 2 Nephi 4 strengthen us when we feel overwhelmed by our weaknesses?

◾ What trials was Nephi experiencing in his life that caused him to express such deep emotion? Have we gone through similar experiences? To explore how Nephi found comfort, class members could review 2 Nephi 4:15–35 and share passages that would comfort someone who feels burdened or discouraged. When have we found comfort by turning to God?

OPTIONAL RESOURCEHymn: “Where Can I Turn for Peace?” (Hymns, no. 129) Nephi’s writings in 2 Nephi 4:15–25 can bring us hope and comfort when we feel discouraged by our sins or weak-nesses. Sacred hymns can also uplift us and point us to the Savior, who is our source of solace and strength. What do we learn from this hymn about where to find peace? What other hymns have lifted us in our struggles?

Be an instrument of the Spirit. Teachers sometimes think that they need to use impressive methods to inspire those they teach. However, your purpose as a teacher is not to make a presentation but to help others receive the influence of the Holy Ghost, the true teacher.

Additional Ideas

2 Nephi 7:7–9; 8:9–16. The Lord fulfills His promises. ◾ Are there any verses in 2 Nephi 6–8 that we could liken to our lives, just as Jacob did? (see 2 Nephi 6:5).

◾ As recorded in 2 Nephi 7:7–9; 8:9–16, Isaiah testified of the Savior’s power to fulfill the promises He has made to His covenant people. What are some of the words and phrases in these verses that describe the Lord’s power? It may help class members to ponder these words if they write them on the board. How have we seen the Lord’s power extended to us? How does our understanding of the Savior’s power help us trust in His ability to fulfill His promises?

2 Nephi 9:3–26. The Savior’s Atonement is infinite and eternal.◾ What Church resources have helped us and our families understand the Atonement?

◾ Come, Follow Me for individuals and families con-tains several pictures that depict the events of Christ’s Atonement and Resurrection (see pages 57–59; see also Luke 22:39–44; 23:33–46; 24). To teach each other about the Atonement, class members could each select a picture, find a verse in 2 Nephi 9 that relates to the picture, and share with each other what they find.

◾ Jacob starts several verses with the word “O” and several with the word “wo.” What do we notice about the teachings found in these verses?

2 Nephi 9:28–38, 49–53. “My soul abhorreth sin.”◾ What have we learned from modern prophets about the unrighteous attitudes and behaviors taught in these verses? (see the statement by Elder Dallin H. Oaks in the “Optional Resource” for an example).

◾ What unrighteous attitudes and behaviors does Jacob warn us about in 2 Nephi 9:28–38? Why are these attitudes and behaviors a cause for concern today? What do we learn from 2 Nephi 9:50–53 about how to avoid these dangers? The Church’s youth theme in 2014, “Come unto Christ,” is similar to Jacob’s invitation in these verses. You could find several media resources on lds.org/youth/theme/2014 that could inspire class members.

OPTIONAL RESOURCECounsel from Elder Dallin H. Oaks“Wherever we are in our spiritual journey—whatever our state of conversion—we are all tempted by [the deceitful-ness of riches]. When attitudes or priorities are fixed on the acquisition, use, or possession of property, we call that materialism. . . . The possession of wealth or significant income is not a mark of heavenly favor, and their absence is not evidence of heavenly disfavor. When Jesus told a faithful follower that he could inherit eternal life if he would only give all that he had to the poor (see Mark 10:17–24), He was not identifying an evil in the possession of riches but an evil in that follower’s attitude toward them. As we are all aware, Jesus praised the good Samaritan, who used the same coinage to serve his fellowman that Judas used to betray his Savior. The root of all evil is not money but the love of money (see 1 Timothy 6:10)” (“The Parable of the Sower,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2015, 34).

What do we learn from Elder Oaks about the dangers of the love of riches? What do his teachings add to our understanding of 2 Nephi 9:30?

Bear your testimony often. Your simple, sincere witness of spiritual truth can have a powerful influence on those you teach. Your witness does not need to be eloquent or lengthy. Consider sharing your personal witness of the Savior as you discuss 2 Nephi 9.

Additional Ideas

2 Nephi 12:1–3. In the temple the Lord will “teach us of His ways.”◾ How have we seen the prophecies in 2 Nephi 12:1–3 fulfilled? How have our experiences in the temple helped us “walk in [God’s] paths”? (2 Nephi 12:3).

◾ Referring to 2 Nephi 12:2–3, President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “I believe that prophecy applies to the historic and wonderful Salt Lake Temple. But I believe also that it is related to [the Conference Center]. For it is from this pulpit that the law of God shall go forth, together with the word and testimony of the Lord” (“This Great Millennial Year,” Ensign, Nov. 2000, 69). What messages from recent general conferences have taught us about the Lord’s ways?

2 Nephi 15:11–20. We can avoid being deceived by false teachings.◾ How is our teaching in the home helping our families avoid false teachings? What advice can we share with each other?

◾ 2 Nephi 15:18 addresses those who draw sin “as it were with a cart rope.” Isaiah 5:18, footnote c defines this phrase as meaning “they are tied to their sins like beasts to their burdens.” What do we learn from this analogy? What other analogies for sin do we find effective?

2 Nephi 25:19–30. “The right way is to believe in Christ.”◾ What truths from our reading this week inspire us to “talk of Christ” and “rejoice in Christ”? (2 Nephi 25).

◾ As we read 2 Nephi 25:23–26, whom do we know (including people in the scriptures) who are good examples of teaching their families and others about Christ? What qualities make these people good examples of teaching others about Christ? What are some natural, easy ways we can talk of Christ and share the message of hope and healing found in the gospel?

OPTIONAL RESOURCEHymn: “I Believe in Christ,” (Hymns, no. 134)How could you use this song to enhance your discussion of 2 Nephi 25:19–30? For example, you could watch a video (mormontabernaclechoir.org), listen to a recording, or read the lyrics together.

Ask questions that invite testimony.Asking questions that encourage students to bear testimony can be a powerful way to invite the Spirit. For example, when teaching 2 Nephi 12:1–3, you could ask a question like “What blessings have you experienced as you have attended the temple?

Additional Ideas

2 Nephi 26–30. The Book of Mormon was written for our day. ◾ You could invite a class member to explain how to use the tools in the Gospel Library app to enhance scripture study.

◾ One way to review these chapters is to make a list of the prophecies about the latter days that are found in them. How have these prophecies been fulfilled, or how are they being fulfilled today? (See the “Optional Resource” below for a story illustrating how 2 Nephi 27:15–20 was fulfilled.) How does the fulfillment of these prophecies strengthen our faith? (See also Ezekiel 37:15–17.)

◾ What do we learn in these chapters about the tactics of Satan, and how can we overcome his efforts to deceive us?

2 Nephi 26:24–33. God invites all of us to come unto Him and partake of His salvation. ◾ What did we mark or make note of in our reading this week? Can any of us share something we learned or that our families learned?

◾ As we come to understand God’s love for us, we desire to reach out and help others receive this love, even those who don’t seem interested in His gospel (see 2 Nephi 26:24–33). What are some of the ways we are reaching out in love to invite people around us to come unto Christ? Perhaps the the full-time missionaries or a recently returned missionary could contribute to this part of the discussion.

2 Nephi 29:6–14. God continues to give revelation to His children. ◾ How have we acted on impressions that we received during a previous class or during our study of the scriptures?

◾ To help class members understand that God speaks to us today as He has in the past, you could invite individuals to come prepared to share portions of a general conference talk that was meaningful to them. How is general con-ference a fulfillment of the promises in 2 Nephi 29:9–10? How have we been blessed by continuing revelation—both personal revelation and the teachings of living prophets? What are some other blessings we have received because of living prophets? (See also Ephesians 1:17–18.)

OPTIONAL RESOURCEStory: “I Cannot Read a Sealed Book”

In February 1828, Martin Harris took a copy of some of the characters from the gold plates, along their trans-lation, to New York City. He showed these to Professor Charles Anthon of Columbia University. According to Martin Harris, “Professor Anthon stated . . . that they were Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic; and he said they were true characters. He gave me a certificate, certifying . . . that they were true characters. . . . I took the certificate and put it into my pocket, and was just leaving the house, when Mr. Anthon called me back, and asked me how the young man found out that there were gold plates in the place where he found them. I answered that an angel of God had revealed it unto him.

“He then said to me, ‘Let me see that certificate.’ I accord-ingly took it out of my pocket and gave it to him, when he took it and tore it to pieces, saying that there was no such thing now as ministering of angels, and that if I would bring the plates to him he would translate them. I informed him that part of the plates were sealed, and that I was forbidden to bring them. He replied, ‘I cannot read a sealed book’” (Joseph Smith—History 1:64–65). How does this story relate to the prophecies in 2 Nephi 27? What else do we learn from this story?

Find the best way to accomplish the objective. The ideas here may or may not work in your class. You know your class members; ask Heavenly Father to guide you to the best ways to help them learn the doctrine and build their faith.

Additional Ideas

2 Nephi 31. The doctrine of Christ leads us along the path toward eternal life. ◾ This chapter provides a good summary of what Nephi called the “doctrine of Christ” (see 2 Nephi 31:2, 21). How could we use this chapter to teach others about the doctrine of Christ?

◾ Think of a road or hiking path. What markers—painted lines, guardrails, hedges—help us stay on the path? In this chapter, and elsewhere in the scriptures, the Lord refers to a path to describe what we must do to obtain eternal life—a “strait [exacting] and narrow path” (2 Nephi 31:18), with requirements that we all must meet. According to this chapter, what are some of these requirements? How would we draw or illustrate the path and the requirements? How can the principles in 2 Nephi 31:20 help us stay on the path to eternal life?

2 Nephi 31:20; 32:3–5. We are commanded to feast on the words of Christ.◾ What have we done to improve our habit of daily scrip-ture study? What do we do to make our study meaningful each day?

◾ Twice in these verses, Nephi refers to “feasting” on the words of Christ. Why would Nephi emphasize this principle? What does it mean to “feast upon the words of Christ”? (2 Nephi 32:3). What is the difference between feasting and snacking in regard to both food and the words of Christ? Ask the class to share experiences when the words of Christ showed them what to do.

2 Nephi 32:8–9. We must pray always.◾ Consider asking class members if they used the family home evening activity in this week’s study outline from Come, Follow Me for individuals and families. What insights could they share?

◾ Prayer is not just for times of crisis; Nephi taught that we “must pray always” (2 Nephi 32:9). Ask class members to think of stories from Nephi’s life. What experiences did he have that taught him this truth? How have we experi-enced the blessings of consistent prayer? How does prayer “consecrate” our efforts “for the welfare of [our souls]”? (2 Nephi 32:9).

OPTIONAL RESOURCEObject Lesson: President Russell M. Nelson said, “Even more amazing than modern technology is our opportu-nity to access information directly from heaven, without hardware, software, or monthly service fees” (“Ask, Seek, Knock,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2009, 81). Bring in a com-munication device, such as a phone, and ask class members to think of the ways we use this object and how these uses are similar to prayer.

We learn together.Avoid seeing yourself as a dispenser of information. Rather, see yourself as a fellow learner with the rest of your class. You can learn from class members—and they can learn from each other—just as much as they can learn from you.

Preparing to Teach in Sunday School

Begin your preparation to teach by reading Jacob 1–4 before studying any supplemental material. Prepare your teaching plan and record your thoughts and impressions. You might also use some of the ideas on the next page or in Come, Follow Me for individuals and families.

ENCOURAGE SHARING AND LEARNING AT HOME◾ To inspire class members to study Jacob 5–7 this week, you could explain that as they read they will learn about God’s plan to gather His people in the last days.

MY TEACHING PLAN

JACOB 1–4March 14–20

“I Must Do According to the Strict Commands of God”

Additional Ideas

Jacob 1:6–8, 15–19; 2:1–11. Righteous leaders labor dili-gently for the welfare of souls. ◾ Consider inviting a few class members in advance to share insights about sustaining Church leaders that they learned from the reading this week.

◾ Jacob used many words and phrases that help us under-stand how much he cared for his people. What words and phrases convey that love in Jacob 1:6–8, 15–19; 2:1–11? What have our Church leaders done to help us feel their “desire and anxiety for the welfare of [our] souls”? (Jacob 2:3). As a class, make a list on the board of things we can do to sustain our local and general Church leaders. A ward leader could also share how he or she is strengthened by the sustaining support of members.

Jacob 2:12–21. We should avoid pride and administer relief to the suffering.◾ What insights can we share about pride and wealth from Jacob 2:12–21? What have modern prophets taught about these issues in our day?

◾ The Book of Mormon was written for our day. Its repeated teachings about the dangers of pride (see, for example, Mormon 9) can be particularly useful to us. Think about the different ways the adversary communicates his messages about materialism—through advertisements, television shows, and literature. What would an adver-tisement look like if it promoted Jacob’s counsel regarding materialism and riches? As a class, what could we do to teach Jacob’s counsel to others? Could we create an advertisement or a poster to share with each other? (See also Matthew 6:33–34.)

Jacob 2:22–35. The Lord delights in chastity. ◾ As we studied these verses, what thoughts did we have about how Jacob’s teachings apply to us?

◾ Like Jacob, we live “in a world that increasingly mocks the sanctity of procreation and minimizes the worth of human life” (David A. Bednar, “We Believe in Being Chaste,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2013, 41–44). How does the Lord’s message as described in Jacob 2:22–35 and Elder David A. Bednar’s talk contrast with the world’s message? (See also Matthew 5:27–28.)

OPTIONAL RESOURCEVideo: “I Choose to Be Pure” (LDS.org). In this video, six young people of various faiths speak about why they have chosen to be sexually pure. Before watch-ing the video, consider asking class members to look for answers to the question “Why is chastity important?” After the video, invite class members to share what they found.

Be flexible. Often the best teaching moments are unexpected: For example, someone might share an experience or ask a question that leads to a meaningful discussion. Listen for promptings from the Spirit and be willing to change your plans if necessary.

The Lord Labors with Us

Additional Ideas

Jacob 5:61–62, 70–75. The Lord labors with His servants in His vineyard. ◾ What scripture passages (from Jacob 5 or elsewhere) inspire us to share the gospel?

◾ Jacob 5:61–62, 70–75 teaches that the Lord works alongside His servants in His vineyard. How has the Lord helped us to labor in His vineyard? What can we do to inspire each other? As a class we could share photographs or stories related to our own or family members’ Church service. What do we feel prompted to do to more fully experience the joy of participating in God’s work? (See also Mark 16:20.)

Jacob 7:1–23. We can stand strong against those who seek to destroy our faith. ◾ What scripture passages from Jacob 7 have strengthened our faith in the Savior and His gospel?

◾ Jacob’s experience with Sherem provides principles that can help all of us when our faith is challenged. What principles do we find in this account? What other examples of standing strong can we share—from the scriptures, our family history, or our own lives—that can help others stand strong against opposition? What messages from Church leaders have inspired us to resist the messages of those who seek to destroy the faith of the Saints? (See, for example, Jeffrey R. Holland, “Lord, I Believe,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2013, 93–95.)

Jacob 7:24–25. We can trust in God. ◾ What effects are we seeing in our lives from regular scripture study? For example, how has our scripture study strengthened us, as individuals and as families, against worldly influences?

◾ The Nephites lived under constant threat of attack from the Lamanites. What can we learn from the Nephites’ response to this situation? (see Jacob 7:25). Though we may not face the daily threat of physical warfare, what spiritual dangers do we face? How can we learn to trust God to help us as He did the Nephites? Ask the class to read or sing a Church hymn that uses warfare as a metaphor, such as “Onward, Christian Soldiers” or “Behold! A Royal Army” (Hymns, nos. 246 and 251).

OPTIONAL RESOURCECounsel from Elder Neil L. AndersenElder Neil L. Andersen told how one young woman re-mained firm in her faith despite opposition:

“Recently, I spoke with a Laurel from the United States. I quote from her email:

“ ‘This past year some of my friends on Facebook began posting their position on marriage. Many favored same-sex marriage, and several LDS youth indicated they “liked” the postings. I made no comment.

“ ‘I decided to declare my belief in traditional marriage in a thoughtful way.

“ ‘With my profile picture, I added the caption “I believe in marriage between a man and a woman.” Almost instantly I started receiving messages. “You are selfish.” “You are judgmental.” One compared me to a slave owner. And I received this post from a great friend who is a strong mem-ber of the Church: “You need to catch up with the times. Things are changing and so should you.”

“ ‘I did not fight back,’ she said, ‘but I did not take my statement down.’

“She concludes: ‘Sometimes, as President Monson said, “You have to stand alone.” Hopefully as youth, we will stand together in being true to God and to the teachings of His living prophets’” (“Spiritual Whirlwinds,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2014, 18–21).

How is the young woman in this story similar to Jacob when he withstood the cunning arguments of Sherem? How can we follow the example of Jacob and this young woman?

How can I reach out to those who don’t attend Sunday School? You can support those who do not attend by sharing something that you learned during class that could bless them. You could do this through an email, a phone call, or a visit.

Ideas for Encouraging Personal and Family Study

Your first purpose as a Sunday School teacher is to encourage class members to study the word of God individually and as families. The following are some ideas to help you do this:

◾ Invite class members to share recent experiences they have had as they studied the scriptures individually and with their families.

◾ Ask class members to share what they are doing to make personal or family scripture study more mean-ingful. (Some ideas can be found under “Improving Personal Study” and “Ideas for Family Learning” in Come, Follow Me for individuals and families.)

◾ Invite class members to share how they have acted on impressions they received during a previous class or during their study of the scriptures.

◾ Spend a few minutes showing class members some of the resources provided by the Church to help mem-bers study the gospel, such as scripture study helps found at scriptures.lds.org; “Scripture Stories” found at children.lds.org; youth.lds.org; seminary and institute manuals; videos, audio recordings, and images (lds.org/media-library).

◾ Spend a few minutes sharing how to use the Gospel Library app to study the scriptures, including how to mark verses and record impressions.

◾ Invite one or more class members to explain how they teach a specific gospel principle in their families.
