Welcome to all the families and friends of our Confirmation candidates. We are delighted you are here to celebrate the Sacra-ment of Confirmation. Whether you are a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church or another parish, or a visitor from another faith, Christian denomination or of no religious affiliation, we extend a heartfelt welcome and invitation to open your hearts to the celebration of this sacred mystery.
More than one hundred fifty young people from the school and Children’s Faith Formation will be confirmed during two liturgies today. Over a two-year period of preparation, our young people explored the possibility that Confirmation is not a singular sacramental moment in the life of the believer, but rather, the culmination of a journey of three Sacraments of Initia-tion: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. Confirmation is not the end, but the beginning of our journey as adult believers.
No photography during the Mass, please. Please maintain a spirit of prayer for all our young people during this sacred moment.

LITURGY OF THE WORDPlease be seated for the proclamation of Scripture.
FIRST READING Isaiah 11: 1-4Introduction to the Reading: The prophet Isaiah lived 750 years before Christ. Despite the political unrest of that period,
he looked forward to a kingdom so wonderful that even nature is at peace. This perfect world would be ruled by a descendent of King David. (As you listen to this reading, it helps to know that “Jesse” is the name of David’s father.)
We observe a moment of sacred silence to reflect on the proclamation.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 104: Send Out Your Spirit, LordCantor sings
SECOND READING Romans 8:26-27Introduction to the Reading: This chapter of Romans emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Paul wants us to remember that the Spirit who will raise our bodies on the last day is the same Spiritwho inspires us to holiness every day. This reading gives us a remarkable insight into prayer.
We observe a moment of sacred silence to reflect on the proclamation.

A reading from the Book of the Prophet IsaiahOn that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him: a Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,A Spirit of counsel and of strength, a Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD,
and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD.Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide,But he shall judge the poor with justice, and decide aright for the land’s afflicted.
The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the RomansBrothers and sisters: The Spirit comes to the aid of our weak-ness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And
the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will. The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

It is important to recognize that parents are the primary educators of their children in their faith. Family catechesis precedes, accompanies and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith. It is the parents who have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God. This childhood religious awakening which takes place in the family is irreplaceable. We acknowledge the parents of our Confirmands for their work as primary educators in the faith.
Encouragement must also be given to the individuals or institutions that, through person-to-person contacts, through classes, and through all kinds of pedagogical means, help parents to perform their task; the service they are giving to catechesis supports the work being done in the home.
We give a special thank-you to those who shared their time and talent with our young people as they prepared for Confirmation.

During his general public audience recently, Pope Francis reminded Catholic parents that their chil-
dren should be confirmed.
Continuing his series of weekly talks on the sacraments, the Pope spoke on Confirmation, noting that
the sacrament is “indissolubly linked” to Baptism. Young people who are baptized but not confirmed “re-
main at a halfway point,” he said, and it is important that they receive the graces of the sacrament.
The Pope recalled that in the early Church, the three sacraments of Christian initiation—Baptism,
Confirmation, and the Eucharist—were administered to catechumens at one time, usually at the Easter
vigil. These sacraments, he said, “constitute a single saving event—Christian initiation—in which we are
brought into Christ who died and rose again, and become new creatures and members of the Church.
“The term ‘confirmation’ reminds us that this Sacrament involves growth from baptismal grace; it
unites us more firmly with Christ; it completes our bond with the Church,” the Pope told his audience.
Concluding his remarks as rain began to fall upon the crowd in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope said: “When
we welcome the Holy Spirit into our hearts and allow it to act, Christ Himself is made present in us and
takes form in our lives.”
