It’s true you don’t need special equipment to see comet C/2020 F3 Neowise from anywhere on St. Joseph Island as long as you have a view to the north-west and clear skies in that area it’s a can’t miss object. Just give yourself a couple of minutes for your eyes to adjust to night vision and then look up after sunset – which for the record is sur-prisingly late here, around 11pm. It’s right near the Big Dipper for now. It’s more visible with even the cheapest pair of binoculars. Our random 20+ year old pair shows the tail in greater detail and it’s certainly a sight to see!
Depending on where you are located it’s also relatively easy to get a nice photo of it over the landscape due to its low orientation in the sky. The cover photo was taken on July 19th just before the comet was obscured by clouds. Again, you don’t need special equipment to capture it. Maybe your smartphone won’t be able to, but with any camera
that you can set the exposure time to a few seconds it will be able to show the comet in good detail. While it has been visible for a while, we missed it earlier in the month as it was originally only visible just before sunrise early in the morning. Now for the duration of its visit shortly after sunset is the best time to view. The comet’s brightness is peak-ing now (July 22nd-23rd). However, you still have some time to get out and see it before it disappears from the sky for another 6800 years. Neowise will be visible through August and September but it will continue to dim and rise higher in the western

Bryon Hall Selected to Fill Vacant Council Seat
The Township of St. Joseph has selected Bryon Hall to fill the Council seat left vacant upon the passing of long time councillor, Lorraine Aelick. The Township would like to sincerely thank all the applicants who submitted their names for consideration and who participated in the interview process. The quality of candidates made this a very close and difficult decision. Mr. Hall will be sworn in at the next Council meeting, scheduled for Wednesday August, 12, 2020.
sky.
Comet brightness can be very unpredictable since its unknown if they will fizzle out while approach-ing the inner solar system but Neowise certainly hasn’t disappointed. It has been the brightest com-et visible in the sky since Hale Bopp in 1995-1996. While in astronomical terms the comet is very close to earth, the closest it will get is 103 million kilometres from us.
The comets location for the next few days in relation to the big dipper. As seen in the chart the comet will continue to move in a western direction

Trash Talk #3: What’s Wrong with These Pictures?Submitted by the St. Joseph Township Landfill Comittee
Do you know the rules regarding what should be placed in the household waste stream at the land-fill? Some people do, but still put the wrong waste in the wrong spot!
Here are the rules again to make sure we are diverting as much waste to recycling, and keeping hazardous waste such as shingles in one area.
Things that should go in household waste: Kitchen garbage such as glass jars, bottles, non-PETE#1, #2 HDPE plastics, soiled boxes and tissues, and other various waste. Think of it this way: if you’d put it in your kitchen or bathroom garbage, it be-longs with household waste. Extra plastic grocery bags can be taken to Food Basics on Trunk Road, or Metro on Northern Ave.
Household refuse MUST be separated from recy-clable materials and non-household refuse.
Non-recyclable household refuse is to be thrown over the bank in designated area.
Recyclable materials MUST be placed in recycling depot collection bins.
METAL and scrap metal goes into a designated area.
Each type of non-household refuse (clean wood, brush, painted/treated wood, shingles, furniture, large plastic items, and other non-household re-fuse) must be separated and be placed in designat-ed areas according to signage. Tipping Fees are in effect for non-household re-fuse.
Why?
Every waste disposal site in Ontario operates un-der a license issued by the Ministry of the Envi-ronment. This license includes conditions under which a waste site must operate, and lists specific conditions that the operator must follow to pro-tect the environment, monitor and control effects, maintain records and report performance.
Failure to maintain MOE standards could result in the withdrawal of our license. Stay tuned for more news as we continually try to improve the landfill operations and keep costs to a minimum.

St. Joseph IslandMuseum Moment
With cancelled events and such a different season ahead I personally will not be writing a column each week, but would still like to share some great Is-land history. Therefore, I have combed through our archives and have pulled Museum Moments from the past that I feel are interesting and deserve a second look. Perhaps I will search through our extensive photo collection and forward those along as well throughout the summer. Andrew and Beth Kwon have graciously offered to print these moments when they have room.
The following moment is from January 2000 written by former curator Cindy CrawfordLife has changed a great deal on St. Joseph Island over the past 100 plus years. I thought it would be interesting to highlight what life was like on the Is-land circa 1900. Please note that this is meant to be a general overview and by no means, is a conclusive list of all activities or interests of that era.
Richards Landing was home to two sawmills, two hotels, a furniture shop, a meat store, a bake shop, two blacksmith shops, one machine shop, two teach-ers at one school, three ministers and three churches, two doctors, one dentist and an undertaker. Beef was 10 cents a pound, a beefsteak was 25 cents for three pounds, liver was 5 cents a pound and lamb was 12 cents a pound.Scattered across the Island were communities (com-plete with post offices) such as Marksville, Milford Haven, Harmony, Kentvale, Caterton, Tenby Bay, Seagull, Gawas Bay and Jocelyn. The St. Joe Her-ald kept locals apprised of news and events as did what was one of the earliest rural phone systems in Ontario established by Humphrey and Heber Young. Cheese factories, FB Kent and the Rainsmere Hotel were all busy enterprises.
Two timber agents operated several types of load-ing equipment around the Island including booms, houseboats and loaders. In the spring, timber lined the shores of the Island, often two piles deep. Early mills were operated by Lloyd, Duncan, Davis and Dean. McGuggan sold to Stone Lumber Company by 1910. Small interior mills were owned by Dickson, Wigmore and MacFarlane. Smith, Shipman, Foster and Chesterfield operated tugs out of the Landing while at Hilton (then Marksville) there was McGug-gan, Duncan and Solomon. Milford Haven had the Murphy’s with Kent and Court at Mud Lake.Even back then a bridge connecting the Island to the mainland was on the wish list of many local residents but it would be a long time coming. The water high-way was the main mode of travel and a busy route it was. The following vessels called each week during the summer on both the up bound and down bound passages, the Majestic, the Germanic, Lake Colling-wood, the Midland, the Windsor, the Caribou, the
Bon Ami and the Manitou. On occasion the Telegram, the King Edward and the Ossifrage also docked near the wharf. The Sault to Thessalon run operated twice daily with the Merit, the John Haggart, the Chatham, the Michipicoten, the Alexandria, the Mary Scott and the Wacouta. Two medium river tugs, several small tugs plus a couple of scows also serviced the immedi-ate waterways.
Pastimes included Truth or Consequences, Blind Man’s Bluff and Jacob and Rachel. Almost every neighbourhood, so to speak had someone who could play the fiddle or call dances. Barn raisings meant work but also community potlucks. Interests could also be served by attending meetings of the Orange Lodge, various church auxiliaries, the Women’s Insti-tute or town hall events.

Looking for something to do this summer? Why not volunteer? The St. Joseph Island Museum could use a little extra help, we currently do not have summer students. Come for as little or as long as you would like. Contact for more details. 705-246-2672 or [email protected].

Hubel, Christine (Christl) left us on Monday July 13 at age 79. She was married to Leo for 60 years. She was known to be a cat lover and a flower lover with many flower beds and tended to them with great care, they were her love and joy. She was also a great cook and baker, housekeeping, dusting, window cleaning was her favourite pastime. For 43 years we renovated and lived in the old farmhouse on the shore on Mud Lake. Christl had many friends on St. Joseph Island; the Campbells, Hawdons, Coopers, Gilbertsons, Shannons, on the Huron and K Line, also many friends from the Soo. I thank all for attending the service and showing your love for her, my sweetheart.
A big thank you to Reverend Hugh Hamilton and John Shannon for the eulogy and Eunice for standing by me. – Leo and family in Austria
