CHAPTER 1 UCM/GSM

FeaturesThe UCM/GSM provides a cellular phone connection to Comfort. Thisgives Comfort the following abilities;1. Acts as a backup for alarm dial-out when the land line is faulty

or cut. Alternately, it can be used without a fixed telephone line, for installations where a telephone line is not available or notdesired.

2. Allows the user to dial to the GSM number instead of the fixedtelephone line to access Comfort menus. There is no voicemailon this line.

3. Allows Comfort to report alarms to the users cellular phones viaSMS (Short Message Service). For Comfort Pro, the SMSmessage will show numeric information corresponding to thealarm type and zone number, user number or module ID. ForComfort Ultra, the SMS message will show the alarm type andZone description as text.

4. Allows users to send commands to control home appliances andthe security system via SMS.

In order for the UCM/GSM to be used, there must be a GSM (GlobalSystem for Mobile Communications) service in the area. GSM iscurrently widely available is Europe and Asia. Refer to http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/index.shtml for networkoperators worldwide that offer services from the GSM family ofWireless Communications. Specific details included within thissection are network, roaming, services and coverage information forover 500 operators in 207 countries/areas of the world. TheUCM/GSM operates on dual-band frequency i.e. 900 MHz and 1800MHz. It currently does not support 1900 MHz which is used inthe US.The UCM/GSM requires a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card tobe inserted, just like with a cellular phone. This can be a prepaidcard, or one which is billed monthly according to a usage plan.

Requirements1. Comfort Controller PCB Rev E6 with U1 Firmware O4.222

Comfort PRO model) or Action 4.221 (Comfort Ultra model).Comfort PCB revisions prior to E6 are NOT able to support theUCM/GSM.

2. Comfigurator version 1.4.0 and above.

Page 3: Comfort GSM Module

SIM CardA SIM (Subscriber Information Card) must be used in the GSMModule. This may be a prepaid card or one which is billed monthlyas part of a service plan. However, it is not advisable to use aprepaid card as the user would not know when the amountremaining has been used up. If SMS is to be sent, then the card must allow sending of SMS.If incoming SMS commands are to be accepted, then Caller ID mustbe enabled. This may incur an additional charge. The SIM card will come with a telephone number. Use this numberto dial to the system via the GSM module.

LocationEnsure that the location where the module is mounted hassufficiently good reception for the GSM Network. The signalstrength can be tested using the SW8-H jumper as described in theJumper Settings section below. The UCM/GSM can be locatedseveral hundred meters away from the Comfort controller so that itshould be possible to find a location where the reception is good.

Connections1. Connect the antenna to the GSM Module by screwing it to the

FME connector.

Place the antenna outside any metal casing which may be usedto house the UCM/GSM module. The base of the antenna ismagnetic and can sit on a metal surface like the Comfortenclosure.

ID=1 is reserved for the UCM used for programming withComfigurator. Do not set the UCM/GSM id to 1. Set the ID to onewhich is not used by any UCM installed in the system. For exampleif ID=2 for C-Bus and UCM=3 for Smartfit has been installed, thenID=4 should be used. This ID should correspond with the “Numberof UCMs” setting in Comfigurator > Modules and Settings screen.

SW8Positions A to G are unused. Position H is open for normal operationand shunted to give signal strength indication on the LEDS RDY,BUSY1, BUSY2, ERR.

What to Watch Out ForOnce the UCM is connected with the ID setting set correctly, theLEDs D10 (Green) and D9 (red) will flash continuously, and the RDYgreen LED should stay on. The RDY LED indicates that the UCMfirmware is running. D10 indicates RS485 data is being receivedfrom Comfort, and D9 indicates the UCM is replying with RS485 data to Comfort. The BUSY1, BUSY2, and ERROR LEDs should beoff. If the RDY LED is not on, press the RESET button on the UCM. Thismay happen when connecting the UCM 4 way cable to Comfortwithout turning off power. RESET on the UCM usually starts theUCM operating correctly.

CHAPTER 3 PROGRAMMING AND OPERATION

Comfigurator > Number of UCMsIn Comfigurator Modules and Settings screen, set the Number ofUCMs according to the number of UCMs in the system. UCM ID=1 isreserved for the UCM used for upload/download with Comfigurator, even if it is not used or connected to Comfort. There should not beany unused UCM Ids, e.g. if the number of UCMs is 4, then UCM Ids2,3 and 4 should be used.

Programming for SMS Dial-out

Programming SMS Phone Type

1. To program a cellular phone for SMS reporting, go to Security >Phone Numbers, and select the phone index 1 to 8 which will beprogrammed for SMS. Comfigurator 1.4.0 and above is requiredto support SMS Phone Types

2. Click on the Phone Type column to reveal the pull-down menuand select SMS.

1. Enter the phone number of the cellular phone for SMSreporting. The cellular phone must operate in the GSM network(either 900 MHz or 1800 MHz) and be able to receive SMSmessages. Check with your cellular operator if you do not knowwhether your cellular phone and service meets theserequirements. The same mobile phone number can beprogrammed in 2 phone indexes as Voice Phone and SMS.

SMS MessagesComfort has a buffer of 12 events for SMS reporting to cater formultiple alarms occurring around the same time. If there is abacklog of 12 SMS events which have not been sent because ofnetwork or other problems, new events will not be reported. If SMSmessages are not sent because of a temporary loss of signal, they

Comfort GSM Module

12

Page 13: Comfort GSM Module

will be sent out when the network communication is restored. However, if there is a communications failure for the UCM/GSM onthe RS485 network, SMS messages will be lost and will not be sentout when the communications is restored.

SMS Messages for Comfort PROFor Comfort PRO, SMS messages show numeric information in theformat; When an alarm is activated,

XXXX - YY - ZZ

When a trouble alarm is restored or (optionally) if a zone whichcaused an alarm is restored;

XXXX - YY - ZZ-Restore

w XXXX is the 4-digit Pager Report Code, which identifies yoursystem. This can be changed in Program Menu, 3 for SecurityOptions, 3 for Pager Report Code.

YY is the 2-digit Alarm Type code. See the table below for the list ofstandard Alarm Type codes.

Alarm Types

w ZZ is the 2-digit Zone number (1 -64) or User number (1-16),depending on the Alarm Type. For example, Intruder alarm typewill report zone number, while Arm and Disarm will report usernumber.

w “Restore” is automatically appended for when Trouble alarmslike Power Failure, Low Battery, Phone Trouble, RS485 Commsalarms are restored. Reporting of Trouble alarm restore isautomatically enabled and does not need to be programmed.

Comfort GSM Module

13

Page 14: Comfort GSM Module

w OK may be appended after the message if a zone (input) hasbeen restored after a zone-related alarm, if the Zone Restorefield is enabled in Security > Zones/Inputs. For example if zone3 (window) which caused an intruder alarm has been closed, theSMS message will be

XXXX - 01 - 03 Restore

The Zone Restore report is enabled in Security > Zone Settingsscreen. The “Restore” field should be set to “Yes” for each zonewhich should report when restored. The “Restore” field appears onlyin Comfigurator 1.4.0 and above.

The Zone Restore feature for SMS reporting is normally only usefulfor monitoring inputs from industrial equipment or machinery, orfrom smoke and gas sensors where it is important to know whetherthe monitored sensor has been restored to its normal state after thealarm. It should not be used for alarm sensors like magneticcontacts and Motion detectors where reporting of zone restorewould increase the amount of SMS messages transmitted withoutany useful purpose. For example, a motion detector or PIR (PassiveInfrared sensor) would restore after each activation so reporting ofrestore would double the SMS traffic.Zone Restore can programmed by Engineer Menu 1,4.

SMS Messages for Comfort UltraFor Ultra, text information instead of numeric information isreported in the SMS message, e.g.

XXXX - Alarm - ZZ Zonename

Where the alarm text is the Alarm Name field in Security Types >Alarm Types. For Comfort Ultra, the Alarm Type number is notreported.

Comfort GSM Module

14

Page 15: Comfort GSM Module

The name is a single word without any spaces. The default Alarm names can be changed if desired, although it is best to leave themunchanged to maintain consistency with other systems.

The Zone Name following the Zone Number ZZ is taken fromSecurity > Zones/Inputs.

The Name field will be displayed when that zone is activated tocause an alarmFor example, if zone 2 - Kitchen Window causes an intruder alarm, the SMS message will be

1234 - Intruder - 02 KitchenWindow

A power failure will be reported as

1234 - PowerFail - 01

In this case, there is no zone/input associated with Power Failure. If a Communications Failure from keypad 1 occurs, the messagewould be

Comfort GSM Module

15

Page 16: Comfort GSM Module

1234 - RS485Comms - 65

Where 65 is the ID of keypad 1.For a Low Battery on Slave 1

1234 - LowBattery - 33

where 33 is the ID of SEM 1

When Trouble alarms are restored, “Restore” is appended after themessage e.g..

1234 - PowerFail Restore

1234 - 09 LowBattery Restore

1234 - RS485Comms - Restore

Note that the ID when restored is not reported

Dialing out via GSMNormally, Comfort will not dial to the programmed numbers(maximum 8) by GSM if there is a fixed telephone line connected. Itwill only do so if it detects that the telephone line is faulty, i.e. hasa low voltage on it causing a “Phone Trouble” alarm or is notconnected. It also dials out by GSM if the telephone line is working, but a dial tone is not obtained, perhaps by an incoming callerholding on to the connection. Thus, it acts as a backup telephoneline to the fixed line for high security installations. If Comfort is connected to an analog extension of a PABX asprogrammed in Telecoms > Dialing, Comfort will not dial the PABXaccess digit (9 in the picture below) when dialing via the GSMModule.

When dialing to a Voice Phone, Comfort knows whenthe called party has answered, so unlike a normal

Comfort GSM Module

16

Page 17: Comfort GSM Module

dial-out, it will not wait for a “hello” from the linebefore giving the alarm message.

When the telephone line is restored, dial-outs will once again be bythe fixed telephone line.

Dialing In via GSMTo access Comfort using the UCM/GSM, dial the number whichcomes with the SIM card. Comfort will answer immediately, insteadof waiting for the programmed number of rings, and will say “PleaseSign In”. There will be no Greeting message, as there answeringmachine when dialing in via GSM. Enter the user code to access thesystem as usual.

Comfort knows when the calling party has ended thecall via GSM, and will clear the line immediately andattend to its other tasks. With a fixed line, Comfortneeds to detect busy tone to know that the caller hashung up.

Sending SMS Commands to ComfortSMS messages can be sent to Comfort from a cellular phone toperform any programmed action on the Home Control Menu or toarm and disarm the security system.The sending mobile phone number must be programmed as one ofthe 8 telephone numbers for dial-out in Security > Phone Numbers,as a Voice Phone or SMS phone type. SMS messages from otherphone numbers not programmed in the Phone number list will notbe accepted.The format of SMS messages to be sent to Comfort are as follows;

(menulevel1 menulevel2 menulevel3,...)Where the command is placed between the “(“ and “)” characters.Any characters outside (...) are ignored. Menulevel1, menulevel2, etc. are the menu commands in the User. The numeric commands can be separated by space e.g. (1,2) , orthey may be sent without any separator , e.g. (12).
