‘30,000 feet view’: The big picture of Dalal Street

Good Morning & Welcome to Thursday's trading action at Dalal Street, dated

    9th of August 2018.

This morning, the frustrating news headlines is on the front pages gain!

Trade War!, Trade War!!, Trade War!!!

SGX Nifty is trading cautiously amidst report that China will match the U.S. and apply a

25% tariff on $16 billion worth of imported U.S. goods including crude oil, cars, coal,

diesel, medical equipment and steel products. In total, the tariffs will be applied on 333

products and will be implemented on Aug. 23, the same day similar U.S. tariffs on Chinese

    goods will take effect.

Interestingly, until now, this bad news was leading to bullish price action at our stock

markets. But going forward its difficult to say how markets will react to the trade war issue.

We say so because, Nifty & Sensex are clearly at overbought technical conditions and most

importantly optimism is clearly missing; the market breath is still not in favor of bulls and

definitely not in tandem with Nifty's all-time-high milestone! The enthusiasm is missing

despite Bank Nifty touching a life-time high of 28,128.

Most importantly, the buying and the incremental follow-through in mid-cap and small-cap

    universe is missing with totality.

The bulls camp would be definitely spying with one big eye for some positive triggers,

probably in form of some kind of resolution between U.S-China, that simply rips broader

    markets higher.

Meanwhile, our call of the day suggests a sluggish trading action on cards and

Nifty may most likely struggle for direction in today's trade.

The real trading excitement quite unlikely.

    • Show Me the Money: Sell CESC (CMP 931.35): Selling on early strength should be

stock ended on a negative note in yesterday's traduing session. Interweek Strategy:

    Technical Strategy

‘30,000 feet view’: The big picture of Dalal Street

    FII & DII DATA:

    • Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 568.63 crore while

domestic institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 30.25 crore in the Indian

equity market on Wednesday, as per provisional data available on the NSE.

    IPO Note:

    • Yesterday, CreditAccess Grameen's IPO or initial public offer opened for

subscription. CreditAccess Grameen is expected to raise Rs. 1,126-1,131 crore.

Price range has been set at Rs.418-Rs. 422 for public offer.

What Technical Tells Us on Nifty: Nifty ended Wednesday’s session with modest

gains, up 0.53% amidst breakout play after 2-3 days consolidation.

Nifty continues to settle at its record closing high at 11,450.

Hoewever, the market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was negative.

The BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.16%. The BSE Small-Cap index rose 0.03%. Both these

    indices underperformed the Sensex..

Technically speaking, the must watch support levels are placed at 11,391 & then at 11,241.

The technical landscape will worsen only if Nifty slips below the 10,901 mark as that would

open the door to massive technical selling, possibly quickly to the 10,451-10,501 zone.

Going forward, regardless of being at unchartered territory, Nifty’s weekly chart shows

that there's further room to go up, amidst latest breakout set-up after the long

consolidative phase. The momentum technical indicators are in bullish mode.

For the day, we believe, Nifty will trade with positive bias and aim to inch towards the

    psychological 11,501 mark.

The price action for Nifty is suggesting that we are likely to see an 11,001-11,501 range in

    near term with positive bias.

Outlook for Thursday: Nifty likely to struggle for direction.

Overnight, Wall Street was mostly lower, as investors grappled with a fresh round of tariff

clashes between the Trump administration and China.

    Global cues:

    • Wall Street in Wednesday's trade was trading with slight negative bias but the

Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 4.66 points, or less than 0.1%, to 7,888.33,

extending its series of wins to seven, its longest stretch of uninterrupted gains since

    March 12.

    • Interestingly, traders were seen digesting the re-imposition of sanctions against

Iran that had been waived under the Iran nuclear deal. It was an Obama-era

agreement that gave Iran sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear

program. In May 2018, President Trump announced that he was backing out of the

    Iran nuclear deal.

    Commodity Cues:

In commodities, Oil prices closed at nearly 7-week low amidst a weaker-than-

expected drawdown in crude stockpiles and concerns that expected disruptions to

Iranian output, caused by U.S. sanctions against Tehran, were overestimated.

Meanwhile, concern over slowing economic growth because of a trade dispute

between the United States and China is keeping upside capped for oil prices.

In Tuesday’s trade, Steel Authority (SAIL)

enjoyed a strong session, up 2.05%. In

yesterday's trade, Sail stock price was seen

    consolidating, down 0.50 points.

Technically, SAIL is attempting a major rebound

on daily charts from an oversold zone.

The stock is still in consolidation mode and the

momentum oscillators will shift on buy mode on

any move above 85 and such up move needs to

be backed by increases in volumes.

Key support to watch in near term is at 75 zone.

Medium term supports seen at 67-70 zone.

    Intermonth perspective: Establish long

positions at CMP, and on dips between 75-76.50

zone, targeting 85 zone and then at 92-95 zone

    with strict stop at 72.45.

‘30,000 feet view’: The big picture of Dalal Street

    • In Wednesday’s trade, Gold prices were seen rangebound as the yellow metal found no catalysts to climb out of a recent downtrend.

    • Copper prices too were seen inching up from an oversold zone, but still unable to stage a major rebound from its lowest level in a year.

    Currencies & Bonds:

    • It was an uninspiring day for the U.S. dollar in Wednesday’s trade. The U.S. dollar was struggling for a clear direction, following Friday's

    July jobs report.

    • USD/INR was in slipping in yesterday's trade amidst profit at higher levels. Key interweek support seen at 68.25. Hurdles now seen at 69.11.

Intraday Strategy: Buy between 68.45-68.55 zone, targeting 69.15 zone and then at 70.05 with stop below 68.21.

    Macro Watch:

    • All anxious eyes will continue to be on the progress on monsoon. The street will also keep a close eye on the movement of Indian Rupee and

the Crude-Oil prices as that could influence investors’ sentiment.

    • Around 2.09 lakh ‘non-filers’ filed income tax returns in last fiscal and paid taxes worth Rs 6,416 crore, Minister of State for Finance Shiv

Pratap Shukla said. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, he said the I-T department issued notices to 3.04 lakh persons who

had deposited cash of more than Rs 10 lakh post demonetisation but had not filed their return of income till the due date.

    • RBI cancels licences of 368 NBFCs in first half of 2018. RBI’s move to cancel NBFC licences is being seen as an attempt to clean up the sector,

which has more than 11,402 entities.

Bulls Vs. Bears: Time to Pick a Side!!

Judging by early action at SGX Nifty, it’s likely that the benchmark Nifty will continue to trade with strength in today’s trading action. Buying on dips

with strict stop could be the order of the day.

Preferred trade on Nifty: Nifty (11450): Buy between 11391-11401 zone, targeting 11501 and then at 11525-11551 zone with stop at 11321.

Preferred trade on Bank Nifty: Bank Nifty (28062): Establish long positions between 27551-27651 zone, targeting 28251 zone and then at

28501-28751 zone with strict stop at 27251.
