President’s piece
I can’t believe this is the last newsletter for 2018. Where has the time gone?
I want to thank everyone for the help given throughout the year. We have
had a very busy year and with everyone helping it makes it so much easier
for the Committee.
Wasn’t the Christmas Luncheon wonderful? We are so lucky to have been
able to hire our new chef. Everything flowed so smoothly and he has
booked to come again next year.
Special thanks go to Ros for her spectacular flower arrangements and of
course, Adel, our drinks waiter. Also, Anna, Yvonne and Margaret for
helping me set up for the Luncheon.
The Committee members need to be thanked for all their hard work,
especially Yvonne and Liz.
I want to extend my very best wishes to all those suffering ill health.
I was at Blue Wren the other day and Mike has made up frames from
remnants. Go and see if any suit you.
Have a very happy Christmas and my very best wishes to you all for 2019.

Steve Vigors
On the 17th-18th of November Steve mounted a solo exhibition at Yallingup hall.
This was a mammoth undertaking, but with the help of his family, 120 paintings
were hung across the genres of seascape, landscape portraiture, flora and still
life. Josie, Steve’s wife was indefatigable and the broad range of her skills, as
organiser and hostess are to be commended.
The clarity of colour and clean lines give Steve’s work a freshness and openness
redolent of salt-laden air. The predominance of seascapes may account for this!
Although seascapes predominate a broad-ranging palette and the variety of
genres complement and enhance the blue hues of the seascapes.
Congratulations, Steve and your wonderful family.

SCULPTURES BY THE BAY
DUNSBOROUGH ARTS FESTIVAL
MARCH 2-4 2019
This will be an exciting holiday long-weekend with plenty of
interest and participation at our workshop on the foreshore.
We are encouraging the public to pick up a paintbrush and have
a go at our community canvas and also visit our wonderful
hidden gem of a hall and meet the accomplished artists who are
participating in this event. Hopefully, this will raise the
profile of the Cape Artists.
Artists with other artistic interests other than painting / drawing
such as small sculptures, jewellery, leatherwork etc will be most
welcome. For any enquiries please approach any of the
committee. (Mary, Colleen, Gemma & Denny )
Hopefully with our members’ support and interest this will
become an annual event for the enjoyment of all !
MERRY
Have a
wonderful
holiday and
best wishes
for the
exhibition.
Thank you, Adel
Adel organised 2 mornings of Life Drawing with a model
from Margaret River. Joanne was a most accommodating
model and over the two mornings the artists involved
worked very hard, often out of their comfort zones, in
charcoal, pastel, ink and on a variety of papers.
All the artists were very appreciative of the effort made in
organising these sessions.
We salute you, Adel.

Friday On My Mind
Florence and I have continued to bring challenging
material for still life each week. We have also
introduced other categories to stretch everyone's
artistic talents. Gail, Steve, Kerry and Vic are
really getting into painting landscapes, particularly
Boranup Forest and bush track scenes from
photographs at the moment. This is to be followed
by some Plein Air in the bush over the road from
the art rooms. Liz is continuing her great work in
still life on Thursdays when not on shift duty. Ann
continues to work on a challenging still life and
Irene has chosen to do some watercolour
paintings of her grandchildren.
Florence is leading the foray into painting sand
dunes and pathways down to beaches. Friday art
classes will continue up to and including 14
December when we will break for the festive
season. Recommencing the first Friday in
February. Jo

Shane Green
Shane’s passion is birds and currently he is
concentrating on magpies.
The development of his skills in representing these very
special birds is amazing.
Until recently he has concentrated on the forms at
ground level in a variety of poses but he is now
branching out to show magpies in flight. Shane is
catching the essence of movement and weightlessness
of flight. The precision of his work and the light in the
eyes allows these garrulous birds to speak to the
viewer.
Another innovation is the addition of decoupage to the
backgrounds. The lightness of touch of these additions
gives joyousness to the paintings. One simply has to
smile when viewing them.
Gillian Morey
Gillian, a new member of D.A.S., makes the long
journey from Frankland River whenever possible, to
join us in creating art.
Her skills are outstanding and cover a wide range of
media. Currently, in her exhibition at D.A.S. she is
exhibiting pyrography, watercolour, watercolour
pencil, acrylic, bling and rusting paper. Her work is
precise and very detailed demonstrating an excellent
grasp of perspective, lightness of touch with flora
and fauna studies and the ability to use strong colour
and design techniques in acrylic and oil.
Gillian’s resume is extensive and she has won many
prizes in different areas over many years. Gillian says
she finds it stimulating being a member of D.A.S. and
D.A.S. will certainly benefit from having such a
positive and creative new member.
Modigliani
The Italian artist, Modigliani (1884-1920), specialised in portraits and nudes. At the
workshop we did portraits incorporating his trademarks of almond and sometimes blank
eyes; swan-like necks; sloping shoulders; and minimal backgrounds. To honour his passion
for sculpture a sculptural item was enmeshed in the background.
The effect of the 13 portraits, when hung on the walls at D.A.S., is of stark simplicity and
almost classical beauty. Ros’s painting ‘Pensive’ has a Renaissance presence; Pam has
introduced a more abstract touch with dribbles in the skin tones; and Wendy has a
thoroughly ‘modern Millie’ with holes in her jeans. Modigliani’s work is not to everyone’s
taste and Margaret referred scathingly to her portrait as ‘that woman with the bent neck’.
Yet many people, on seeing Margaret’s beautiful ‘Modigliani Woman’ portrait, have thought
it was a self- portrait of her when she was seventeen. Liz painted her daughter and when
Rachel’s boyfriend saw it he wondered if Liz thought her daughter was a giraffe! Beauty is all
in the eye of the beholder!
Liking notwithstanding, a great deal was learned from studying the work of this gifted artist.
P.S. Many thanks to Adel, Liz and Olga for their help in hanging these exhibitions. Phyllis

Pam’s Fun Workshop
Tiles, ink and alcohol were all that were needed for a fabulous day of fun and
frivolity.
The glorious ink colours, neutral tiles, alcohol-filled reservoir pens and straws
made for the most wonderful abstract designs of flowers, coral reefs and
gardens. It was amazing to see what evolved and once confidence was gained,
how easy it was to innovate and create.
Thank you, Pam for a wonderful day of new experiences.
LIFE DRAWING
The difficulties inherent in Life Drawing can make for a stressful
workshop but the benefits of understanding line, shape, measurement,
proportion and perspective make the agony worthwhile. The skills
learned at Life Drawing workshop can be transferred to any genre, any
work of fine art. The next step is to undertake more Life Drawing
sessions to hone the developing skills and to use them confidently and
adroitly.
Dunsborough Art Society Christmas Party 2018
Christmas Season was launched very successfully with a luncheon at the club rooms. The food was excellent
with members each bringing their own special dishes. This year we had the advantage of having our own food
and kitchen manager so that all members were free to enjoy the function.
Table decorations by Roslyn Campbell were beautiful and the drinks efficiently served by Adel’ went very well
with our food.
President Laurel thanked members for their support and in particular Phyllis for her work in developing
imaginative and stimulating workshops, exhibitions and informative newsletters. Wendy won the members’
vote for the Bald Archie Portrait Award with a beautiful image of Marilyn Monroe all in pink. The other
presentation that day was the Patron, Betty Edward’s Award being for the most improvement shown through
the year and won by Lamani.
The Modigliani paintings were very much admired. A great luncheon enjoyed by all. Thank you all for your
contributions and gifts. Have a Merry Christmas and productive New Year.
Thank you, Pam and Peter Luff for the text and photos. Ed
