SCHOOL NEWS WHITE RIBBON PROGRAM DHSS is investigating becoming involved in the, “White Ribbon Program”, a component of the, “Breaking the Silence” initiative. This is a free, award-winning professional learn- ing program aimed to embed models of respectful relationships in school culture and classroom activities. These models give students the opportunity to learn and experience respectful relationships, preventing the perpetration of violence against women and girls. The Program is independently evaluated and suitable for both primary and secondary schools. The Program supports schools to build on initiatives, policies and curriculum to promote the school as a respectful centre for education, safe workplace, and as a vehi- cle for community culture change. Schools who complete Breaking the Silence are rec- ognised as White Ribbon Schools, becoming a strong symbol in the community. Should we become involved in this program it is envisaged that conversations about re- spectful relationships will be initiated and then continue in the school community, in classrooms, among staff members and with parents and carers. Our school would offer the opportunity for our students to explore respectful behaviours through a range of practical activities. There is a growing feeling within our school community that we can play a little part in the National and community approaches which are seeking an Attitudinal and Behaviour- al Change by some members of our society with regards to Violence Against Women and Girls. I will keep you informed of our progress as we investigate this initiative STAFFROOM PAINTING It is expected that internal painting of the refurbished staffroom (previously Prep T) will be completed this week. This will allow us to make additional changes so that the room is not only an attractive lunch area for all staff but a professional meeting place for week- ly staff meetings and various other PD activities. 5/6 CANBERRA TRIP The Year 5/6 Canberra Trip may be in Term Four, but is edging closer. Please be aware that continued payments toward the total can be made so that the final sum is not such a daunting one. P&C MEETING The monthly P&C Meeting was held last night. Reports were presented regarding the various recent fundraising activities (Athletics Carnival, Bi-election Barbecue and Cake Stall). Video, cards and letters of thanks, individually signed, were also presented to the P&C from the children of Yr 3/4 who were very appreciative of the recent air conditioning of their classroom. The P&C members at the meeting were ‘touched’ by the gesture. Those cards will now be displayed in the foyer. Please remember that the P&C has a goal to provide air conditioning to the entire school so please provide any support possi- ble in terms of future fund-raising, requests for help at a range of events or even volun- teer some time at the tuckshop. As an example, on Saturday 13 August volunteers will be for sought for a barbecue at Masters - even an hour would help. PBL (POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING) MATTERS The Value for this week is “Respect”, with a focus on, “I respect individual differences”. Today, more than ever, kids interact with people of differing ethnicities, religions, and cultures. Darling Heights State School is unique in that we have students from nearly 40 different countries from around the world. Being tolerant and respectful of others, being fair and accepting the differences in one another is something that is instilled in all members of the Darling Heights community. Teaching tolerance is important not just because it is part of our Australian heritage, but because the person who learns to be open to differences will have more opportunities in education, business, and many other aspects of life. In short, your child's success depends on it. Success in today's world — and tomorrow's — de-pends on being able to understand, appreciate, and work with others. What is Tolerance? Tolerance refers to an attitude of openness and respect for the differences that exist among peo-ple. Tolerance means respecting and learning from others, valuing differences, bridging cultural gaps, rejecting unfair stereotypes, discovering common ground, and creating new bonds. Toler-ance, in many ways, is the opposite of prejudice. But does tolerance mean that all behaviours have to be accepted? Of course not. Behaviours that disrespect or hurt others, like being mean or bullying, or behaviours that break social rules, like lying or stealing, should not be tolerated. Toler-ance is about accepting people for who they are — not about accepting bad behaviour. Tolerance also means treating others the way you would like to be treated. Teaching Tolerance Like all attitudes, tolerance is often taught in subtle ways. Even before they can speak, children closely watch — and imitate — their parents. Kids of all ages develop their own values, in great part, by mirroring the values and attitudes of those they care about. When parents encourage a tolerant attitude in their children, talk about their values, and model the behaviour they would like to see by treating others well, kids will follow in their footsteps. A special thanks to all parents who take the time each week to sit down and talk to their child/ren about the week’s Value and focus. If any parents have any queries or concerns or wish to discuss anything, please feel free to contact Mr James Leach (Deputy Principal) on 46 368 333. NAIDOC On parade this week, all of the Indigenous children will be presenting a very special gift to the school, produced by all of the children. Please come along and take a look at the wonderful job they have done and share the excitement with them. Parade begins at 2.00pm and seating will be available at the back of the hall.

TARI INDANG DANCE PERFORMANCE: On Monday, all of our students were very lucky to ex-perience part of the Indonesian culture right here at school. A group of dancers from Gatton visited us and performed in the assembly hall sitting dance from West Sumatra called Tari Indang. The children were en-thralled and later were able to talk about many aspects of it which impressed them. The dancers made many positive comments about the behaviour of our students and were genuinely im-pressed with the language skills of those students who took the opportunity to speak in Indonesian with the dancers; a great credit to the students here at Darling Heights. TERIMA KASIH to the dancers.

STATE FOOTBALL CARNIVAL Past Darling Heights Students, Frank Mills, Prasidha Paudyal and Janao' Philip at U/15 State Carnival in Maroochydore . DD team placed 4th.

SENIOR NEWS Interschool sport began last week, and this means Soccer, Hockey and shin pads for all. The Junior and Senior Soccer girls played Toowoomba East here at Darling Heights with the Juniors losing a close contest 1—0. The Seniors continued their good form from last year beating East 3—0. The Junior and Senior boys A teams wore their metaphorical away strip to play Grammar in East Toowoomba. The Seniors fought hard and only lost 1—0, while the Juniors won 3 –1. Our Soccer B teams played at home against a couple of tough Toowoomba East sides and are looking forward to improved results next week. The mixed hockey teams were off to Clyde Park with the Senior A’s winning their game against St Saviours, the Jun-ior A’s losing narrowly to a very strong Fairholme team, and the Junior B’s downing Toowoomba Prep. This year has also seen a new initiative, with some students not doing interschool sport, still lending a hand to raise our profile by brightening up the school gardens. A great time was had by all, and we’re all looking forward to seeing how our gardens grow.
