“They Will Shine”

College Theme for 2017: “Open New Horizons for Spreading Joy” A Night to Shine On Thursday October 19, the College community gathered at Encore Events Centre to recognise and celebrate the achievement of over 200 students during the course of 2017. It was a wonderful evening which also provided the opportunity to once again showcase the talents of our Performing Arts students. I have provided below an extract of my address on this evening.

To begin with I would like to acknowledge and congratulate all the students that have been recognised tonight. Their academic, cultural and sporting achievements are indeed very worthy. Tonight, certainly has been a Night to Shine and it is most important that we celebrate their achievements. Now I have the pleasure of presenting the Principal’s report for 2017. It is an opportunity to highlight some of the important aspects of school life during the course of this year. A full report will appear in this year’s edition of Shine, the College Yearbook to be published at the end of the year. Our College Theme for 2017 “Open New Horizons for Spreading Joy” was inspired by the Holy Year of Youth. At World Youth Day 2016, Pope Francis called young people and the Church to ‘open new horizons for spreading joy’. In this theme Pope Francis challenges us to welcome new opportunities for sharing the joy and hope of the Risen Christ. As a Catholic school our theme this year has challenged us to work closely with young people to inspire their dreams for the future, just as Jesus has dreams for the future of our youth. Let us accompany our students as they discern the path that God has for them. The focus for the College this year has been undertaking our four year school review which has the dual purpose of satisfying expectations of government and sector authorities about accountability for the outcomes of schooling and to assist the College and teachers to improve student learning outcomes. The focus of the review was on improving student outcomes and improving the five spheres of:

• Education in Faith • Learning and Teaching • Student Wellbeing • Leadership and Management • School Community

Our reviewers have reported back to the College Board and Staff that Thomas Carr College has acted on many fronts to develop a culture of performance and development having put in place a strong structure for staff induction, appraisal, feedback and peer observation with professional learning programs targeted to support the college goals for school improvement. Good teaching practice is becoming more evident at the college. The review process has identified the following strengths of Thomas Carr College:

Its broad curriculum, attuned to the needs of students, with an excellent pathways program and the iD9 Good Samaritan country experience.

An excellent educational environment with new and refurbished buildings to support contemporary learning, student needs and demonstrate a Catholic identity.

The college’s strong reputation in dealing with students of special needs.

The college is well led and managed and has acted on many fronts to promote the professional culture of its staff.

The visible signs of Catholic identity with a range of religious icons and messages in classrooms and around the college.

It is a community of welcome, care and inclusion.

The reviewers were impressed by the positive atmosphere that pervades the college and the sense that this is a learning community looking to do things better. It has laid foundations for further advancement on the continuum of school effectiveness.

In terms of our continuing capital development at the College we have seen the completion of $21.6 million worth of buildings since 2012. This year we have seen the completion of the extension and refurbishment of the Fr Ray Administration Centre, the extension of the Fr Tobin Gymnasium which has more than doubled the size of this facility and at the beginning of the Advent Term the Fr Moran Performing Arts Centre including a 500 seat auditorium was handed over to the College. These three buildings have all been named in honour of our founding Canonical Administrators. One of the most important organisations within the College is the Parents and Friends Association. At their Annual General Meeting in March the following parents were duly elected to the executive of the Parents and Friends Association: President: Mrs Tanya Tesoriero Secretary: Mrs Ange Drever Treasurer: Mrs Terese Smith I thank Tanya, Ange and Terese and the other members of the Parents and Friends for their hard work and commitment to the College during the course of this year. The money that the Association have been able to raise has allowed the College to purchase a grand piano for the Performing Arts Centre Finally, to conclude I would like to thank staff, students and parents of Thomas Carr College for your continued support and encouragement. It is very much appreciated. In particular, I would like to thank, the College’s three Canonical Administrators, Fathers Jude, Frank and Pius and the College Board, Chaired by Mrs Connie Skinner, for their ongoing support, advice and encouragement during the course of 2017. I thank particularly the members of the College Executive: Ms Brigitte McDonald (Deputy Principal), Ms Sharon O’Neill (Business Manager), Mr Cris Scarlatta (Senior Director) Ms Nakkita Egan (Director of Catholic Identity) Mrs Geralyn McCarthy (Director of Student Services) Mr Tom Bridges (Director of International Programs, Mrs Margaret Knurek (Head of Senior School) and Mr

Stephan Le roux (Head of Middle School). Also this year I would like to acknowledge Mr Francis Camenzuli and Mr John Wilkinson who undertook acting roles on the College Executive during the first semester. They all shoulder great responsibilities and I value their support. It has been a wonderful evening showcasing the very best of Thomas Carr College. I trust that you have enjoyed the entertainment this evening and have appreciated the opportunity to recognize over two hundred students for their achievements this year.

Thomas Carr Prize Erin Sidwell Solemn Blessing and Official Opening of the Fr Ray Administration Centre, Fr Tobin Gymnasium and Fr Moran Performing Arts Centre The College community gathered together on the evening of Wednesday November 1 for Bishop Mark Edwards, Auxilary Bishop for the Western Region to bless our new facilities and Mr Stephen Elder, Executive Director of Catholic Education Melbourne to officially open them. The College also appreciated the opportunity to welcome back Fr Barry Moran, Fr Peter Ray and Fr Barry Tobin, our founding Canonical Administrators who our wonderful new facilities have been named after. The blessing and opening of the new facilities marked a significant occasion in the life of our College where we are able to honour Fr Barry Moran, Fr Peter Ray and Fr Barry Tobin for their significant contribution to the founding and development of Thomas Carr College The College community owes a great debt of gratitude to these three gentlemen for their vision and determination to build a Catholic Secondary School for the community of Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina. The College is delighted that our founding Canonical Administrators’ legacy at Thomas Carr College and Catholic Education will be remembered through the naming of our new facilities. Our wonderful new spaces have involved the • refurbishment and extension of the administration centre • extension of the gymnasium to more than double its existing size with the

addition of class rooms and a weights area • construction of a state of the art Performing Arts Centre including this wonderful

500 seat auditorium The total cost of the building project was $9.5 million dollars with the assistance of a $1 million grant from the Federal Government for the Performing Arts Centre. The ability of the College to be able to undertake a project of such size is due to the support we have received from the Catholic Development Fund (CDF). We are most grateful to CDF for providing the finance for this project so that we can continue to provide the best possible facilities for families that seek a Catholic Education. From the Business Manager Ms O’Neill Marketing It is important for our College to have a face in the community. The most effective way of doing this in the past has been through print media and our website. Times are changing and social media is fast becoming the most effective mode of marketing by reaching large numbers of people in the community. We have great things happening at our school on a daily basis and it is important for us to share these good stories with others. As a result, we are now ramping up the use of Facebook and Instagram where we will regularly post photos of the various activities that our students and staff are involved in. Parents are reminded that the College operates in accordance with its Privacy Policy. Any parent that is concerned about their son or daughters photo being shared on social media should firstly familiarise themselves with the Colleges Privacy Policy which is available on the college website: http://www.thomascarr.vic.edu.au/_uploads/rsfil/03778.pdf Follow us on Instagram @thomascarrcollege Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/tcctarneit/

From the Head of Middle School Mr le Roux City Experience Having completed the week-long excursion, I can happily say that I had a lot of fun throughout the iD9 City Experience. However, it was incredibly tiring, especially the first few days, something I wasn’t used to. My group and I started using trams a lot more towards the middle and end of the week, we did this to get out from the sun and heat. The Old Melbourne Gaol was a highlight for me, and I would love to go there again to further explore. My group and I finished our 36-point scavenger hunt by the Friday. After that, we finished with the whole group mass at St Francis Church on Lonsdale Street. If I could make the week go for longer, I would, it is an experience not to be missed and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Riya Mathew 9 Jade Year 9 2018 Parent Information Night On Wednesday November 22 an information night will be held at the College in the Fr. Moran Performing Arts Centre for our current Year 8 families. During this evening you will hear from a range of speakers who will discuss the iD9 curriculum that your child will be undertaking in 2018.

From the Head of Senior School Mrs Knurek This last fortnight has seen the celebratory events to mark the end of secondary schooling for our Year 12 students and the students have marked the end of their schooling in a number of ways way. The Final Assembly on Monday October 23, and the informal breakfast on Tuesday October 24 were terrific celebrations and the students were a pleasure to be with. The Year 12 team of Homeroom teachers, led by Mr Michael Ramsay and Mr Francis Camenzuli have given generously of their time throughout the year and this week was no exception. We thank them for their care of our students. All of these events only happen because of the work of a large team of

people and we thank all those involved. It is now time for all students to focus on their end of year examinations. Please discuss with your son or daughter how to use this time effectively in their examination preparation. Exams Senior School students are about to commence their end of year examinations. A reminder that Year 10 and 11 students are not required at school during the designated examination period unless they have an exam. Students are expected to go home at the end of their examinations for the day and should not congregate across the road at Wyndham Shopping Centre. Generally, students’ results reflect the work they have put into their preparation and revision. Some students have worked well all year, but others have taken a haphazard approach and have been inconsistent with their application to work and study. Students whose examination results affect their proposed course of study in 2018 may be required to return to the College for an interview to discuss subject options following the conclusion of the Head start program Arrangements for Year 11 Students Studying a unit 3 &4 subject: Students in Year 11 undertaking studies in a VCE Unit 3&4 subject have either undertaken their VCAA Unit 3&4 exam or will do so shortly. This means that they will have a number of study periods in their timetable. Once they have completed their exam, if these periods are at the end of the day, students may depart the College on the relevant days at the conclusion of their previous period. If students have no timetabled classes in period 6, they will depart at 2.30pm. If they have no timetabled classes in periods 5 and 6, they will depart school at the beginning of lunchtime. On Wednesday, some students have period 4 free. As ACS is now completed for Year 11 students, these students can leave at the end of period 3 (11.55am). Students are expected to depart the College and go straight home. They are not permitted to purchase lunch at the local shopping centre and return to school and are discouraged from loitering in the local community. This is not free time for students to take on an additional work shift, but rather an opportunity to do some additional work, prepare for upcoming exams or to catch up on their studies if they are not required at the College. Students should use the time provided to continue their preparation and study program at home. On line Privacy Online safety is one way to reduce the risk of bullying, identity theft or predatory behaviour by others and includes recognising when someone’s online behaviour is bullying and how to avoid engaging in or supporting online bullying. There are sometimes instances of students behaving inappropriately online and I encourage parents to refer to the flier enclosed which gives Ten Tips to Protect Your Privacy. Senior School Final Assembly On Friday November 17, we will mark the end of the academic school year with an assembly in which we celebrate the many achievements of our students in a relatively short Term 4. At this assembly, we will acknowledge the work of our student leaders this year. This will also be an opportunity for students to acknowledge the work done by their Homeroom teachers over the course of the year. I also wish to acknowledge the work done by the school administration staff this year. When students return after their examinations for the Head Start program, they will do so as Year 11 and 12 students.

From the Social Justice Co-ordinator Mrs Dagmang Banding with CanTeen - National Bandanna Day

On Friday October 17, Andrea Mifsud (7 Red) and Natasha Smith (9 Red), together with

their friends sold bandannas in support of CanTeen, a game changer for young people

afflicted with cancer.

Every day, 63 young Australians are faced with a cancer diagnosis - for either themselves or an immediate family member. The impact of a cancer diagnosis has long-term emotional, mental and financial implications for young people, who are at considerable risk of isolation and psychological distress.

To all those who supported Andrea and Natasha, we thank you for being a part of

CanTeen’s mission to uplift the spirit of those who are challenged by cancer. The money

raised would be enough to enable two young people to attend an hour-long face-to-face

counselling session.

This is just the beginning, and may your bandanna remind you each time that you

banded with them this year.

Christmas Hamper Appeal Although Christmas is still a number of weeks away, we have started organising our Christmas Hampers for those less fortunate in Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina. Christmas Season is an opportunity to create a new level of hope, love and joy for them. All Homerooms were given a box for the Christmas Hamper Appeal and boxes are slowly filling up. The Year 12 students donated two hampers before they officially left the College this year. We encourage all families in our parish and in our school community to take part in the Christmas Hamper Appeal. Please donate the items in the wish list below. Last day to donate is Friday November 17. Items include: Non-Perishable Food: Christmas cakes/puddings, custard (long life- not fresh), tin ham, long life milk, nuts, canned fruits/vegetables, jam/marmalade/ jelly, honey, fancy biscuits/cookies, fruit juice, canned/dehydrated soups, rice crackers, boxed chocolates, tea, coffee, chips, softdrink, Christmas lollies, and the like. Christmas Products: Unused kids’ stuff toys, new kids’ reading books, new Christmas novelties Toiletries: Soap, hand wash, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, hand towels, comb etc. We are asking for volunteers to help in sorting out these gift items in the Fr Tobin gymnasium on Monday and Tuesday December 11 and 12. For more information, please contact Mrs Dagmang or Ms Alphonso at the College. Students can register at St James Parish and collect their permission note from Red. Thank you in advance for your generosity and charitable works.

From the ACS Department Ms White ACS- Important Reminders Injuries If your son/daughter sustains an injury which prevents them from playing ACS then a medical certificate must be produced to Ms White or Ms Winch as soon as possible prior to the next round of ACS outlining the dates they are unavailable to play. This helps us to keep track of injuries and ensure our teams are not impacted greatly. EpiPens and Asthma Pumps If your child has an EpiPen or Asthma Pump they are required to ensure it travels with them to all ACS games and training sessions. This must be shown to their coach prior to getting on the bus. Weather With the weather heating up, a reminder that hats should be worn in all PE classes and outdoor ACS sports. Keeping hydrated is also important to limit dehydration. Please stay up to date with the weather forecast and ensure your child is adequately prepared for all weather conditions.

We would like to share these results with our College Community. Year 7 Boys 1st Soccer The Year 7 Boys 1st Soccer Team finished 2nd on the ladder after 11 rounds and played a strong Overnewton outfit in the Grand Final. Unfortunately, Overnewton were too slick with their ball movements and we were unable to match their pace and skill. The team now knows the level required to win a grand final, so we are sure we will come back bigger and better next year. Year 7 Boys 2nd Soccer Our Year 7 Boys 2nd Soccer Team, like our firsts, played off against Overnewton in the decider, unfortunately going down 7-nil. Congratulations to both Year 7 Soccer Teams on a tremendous effort all season. We are sure 2018 will be just as promising.

Year 9 Girls 1st Basketball Our Year 9 Girls 1st Basketball team finished on top of the ladder and went into the Grand Final against Loyola with high hopes and great expectations. The whole team lifted for the occasion and dug deep in the last 3 minutes to take out the win 34-24. Congratulations girls on your fantastic win and for representing TCC with great pride and determination. Year 9 Girls 2nd Netball Our Year 9 Girls 2nd Netball Team played off in the decider against Overnewton at home and the going was tight early on in a tough contest. Our girls defended the contest well and ran out 5 goal winners which is an amazing feat. Well done girls on a sensational winter season. Year 9 Girls Table Tennis Our Year 9 Girls Table Tennis Team played off against Overnewton in their grand final and pushed them all the way early but just weren’t able to win enough sets at the end of the day going down 6 matches to 9. Better luck next year girls, next year will be ours.

Senior Girls 1st Table Tennis Our Senior Girls 1st Table Tennis battled hard all season and came up against a tough team in Westbourne in the decider. It promised to be an evenly poised grand final and it sure delivered, however, we were unable to capitalise on a few games which saw the team go down by a small margin in terms of sets. Congratulations girls on making it to the Grand Final and for representing our College with great pride and respect Senior Girls 2nd Table Tennis Our Senior Girls 2nd Table Tennis team finished 2nd again behind Westbourne. The girls gave it their best shot, however, were upstaged by a more highly skilled opposition. We have no doubt our Table Tennis teams are on the rise and we look forward to seeing them battle it out in next year’s season. Senior Boys 3rd Soccer Our Senior Boys 3rd Soccer team battled it out against our usual soccer rivals in Overnewton in the grand final. At half time, the scores were locked at nil all until a long pass allowed Martin Benadette to weave his magic and slot one for a goal. Daniel Micallef then sealed the win with a huge goal outwitting the Overnewton goal keeper. Congratulations team on a tremendous season. A well-deserved win.

From the Student Wellbeing Team Mrs Chitima Koorie Kids Portfolio - Incursion An incursion for our Indigenous students was organised and run by Western Creation Cultural Infusion. This was held on Monday September 18. The purpose of the incursion was to learn about Indigenous artwork which is incredibly important in preserving their culture and heritage. During the incursion, students were taught techniques of creating Indigenous artwork and obtained an understanding of the symbols and colours used in Indigenous art to convey cultural stories and messages. On Monday September 18, the small group of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander students had the privilege of meeting Tristan from Western Creation to teach us about ancient and traditional indigenous drawings, stories, heritage and culture. We all participated in the activity that involved '"telling a story" using symbols. This was followed by a shared lunch; the pizza was yummy. We all had a great session, and hope to have Tristan back at our school soon to teach us more about our culture and heritage. Chloe James 11 White.
