Grand Opening Weekend November 22/23, 2013 Gala Concert Dedication Ceremony With a wave of the conductor’s baton, the stirring fanfare of Appalachian Spring ushered in a new era for the CTHM. Guests at our Gala Concert enjoyed a collective moment of pride in accomplishment, fellowship, and reflection, celebrating over ten years of collaborative effort. At the Dedication Ceremony, our extended family of volunteers, friends, civic leaders, and first-day visitors shared coffee and biscuits hot off the campfire – echoing the spirit of the trail riders of yesterday. A capacity crowd packed the tent to hear dedication speeches from Bobbie Greene McCarthy, on the value of historic preservation in saving some of the Nation’s treasures, and from former Texas Governor Mark White, who spoke to the importance of preserving South Texas’ rich agricultural and ranching heritage for the benefit of future generations of young Texans.
Community turns out in style for a Texas-sized celebration!

Good morning to everyone gathered in the beautiful Chisholm Trail Heritage
Museum in Cuero, Texas. I’m Laura Bush, and I’m thrilled that this museum is open and that it honors the rich ranching legacy of South Texas. President Bush joins me in congratulating you for your work to preserve the history of our state’s ranching traditions.
Your commitment to protect and keep alive the stories of the people from the epic cattle drive era is saving this time in America’s history for our children and grandchildren. Visitors from all over will enjoy exploring the true stories of the Longhorn, the great cattle drives, and the American cowboy, all in the former Knights of Pythias Hall.
In 2004, Cuero was one of the first 60 communities in the nation to receive the prestigious designation as a Preserve America Community. Today, with the opening of the Chisholm Trail you are truly preserving America. Please accept my very best wishes and congratulations.
Our Dedication Ceremony featured a personalized video greeting
from former First Lady Laura Bush. Here is a transcript of her congratula-tory message, in acknowledgement of
this milestone occasion.

Museum Wins Texas Downtown Association AwardNovember 7, 2013 :: At its annual conference held in Bastrop, Texas, the Texas Downtown Association (TDA) recognized the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum with a TDA Presidents Award for Best Renovation/Rehabilitation Project of 2013. Fisher Heck Architects, architects of record for the Museum, made the announcement.
“The renovation/rehabilitation award recognizes excellence in the rehabilita-tion of the interior or exterior of a building. The Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum is located in the city of Cuero, which is about 86 miles southeast of San Antonio. The Museum, which celebrated its grand opening November 23, 2013, is dedicated to preserving the ranching and Western heritage of South Central Texas.”
Based in Austin, the TDA is an independent nonprofit involved in downtown revitalization projects throughout Texas. }

ConocoPhillips Contributes $3K to Cowboy CampFebruary 25, 2014 :: Sincere thanks to ConocoPhillips for their generous contribution of $3,000 in support of the CTHM’s 2014 Cowboy Camp. The company sponsored a check presentation luncheon and ceremony in Kenedy on February 25, 2014 where ConocoPhillips awarded $233,000 to 36 organizations who represent the company’s philanthropic pillars: Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), Education, the Arts, and Cultural Preserva-tion. The CTHM is proud to be included in this select group.
Each summer, the Museum’s Cowboy Camp attracts approxi-mately 30 - 35 young buckaroos who spend a week experiencing the cowboy life: activities include leather tooling, roping, horsemanship, and chuck wagon cooking. Volunteer Margorie Kacir will be coordinating this summer’s Cowboy Camp for the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum, alongside with veteran coordi-nator, Candy Glidden, husband Dan, and son Travis.
Union Pacific Foundation Awards $5K for ExhibitsJanuary 2014 :: Union Pacific Foundation has announced a grant award of $5,000, for the Museum’s exhibits and displays. The Union Pacific Foundation is a philanthropic arm of Union Pacific Corpora-tion and Union Pacific Railroad and its goal is to distribute funds to qualified organizations and communities that Union Pacific serves. The foundation is not endowed, but is funded each year from the operating profits of Union Pacific Corporation.
In 2012 alone, Union Pacific in conjunction with its foundation, supported more than 2,500 nonprofit organizations. “We award grants
through an annual online application process available to nonprofits located in Union Pacific communities, and combine those efforts with corporate support and employee matching gifts.”
Awarded by the Union Pacific Foundation on several occasions in the past, the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum is grateful for the continuing support of such an important funding partner.

hen the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum opened its doors to the general public in November 2013, it marked the culmination of many years of thorough planning.
Drew Patterson and Pony Allen were engaged in 2009 by CTHM to plan, design and execute a first-class museum, to incorporate authenticity with different learning styles, while adhering to the highest professional standards for displaying and interpreting rare objects relating to late 19th century ranching history.
The Concept Plan: Roots in Regional Ranching History
The project’s Interpretive Concept Plan, created in 2007 by a team of board members and regional stakeholders under the direction of Lonn Taylor and Bruce Shackelford, was titled, “Don’t Fence Me In and Other Life Lessons; how fortitude, ingenuity and skill created a thriving cattle industry in the Guadalupe River Valley in the latter half of the 19th century and how those qualities are still deeply ingrained in our region’s heritage.” Patterson and Allen were also charged to implement an interpretive philosophy explaining, “that ranching and trail-driving were arduous enterprises, which required skill, fortitude, and ingenuity.” The plan continued, “Visitors should be brought as close to the experiences of the men and women who engaged in these enterprises as possible. The exhibit should appeal to a wide variety of learning styles and should not assume that the visitor has a great deal of previous information about ranching and trail-driving.”
Decades of Exhibit Design Experience Benefit the CTHM
Earlier in their careers, Patterson and Allen collaborated on the well-received Davy Crockett exhibit at the Bob Bullock State History Museum. More recently, the Texas Historical Commission employed the team to produce exhibit material for Casa Navarro in San Antonio. The Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum is fortunate to have hired such a capable and experienced team of museum design experts, who successfully helped us take our ambitious project across the finish line. Drew Patterson’s exhibit design work reflects a background in historic preservation, fine arts, graphic arts and exhibit planning and production. Since 1972, Patterson has created exhibits for prestigious institutions across Texas, including The Alamo, Texas Parks & Wildlife, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, the Lyndon B. Johnson Library and Museum, and the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History.
Pony Allen has over twenty-five years’ experience in museum exhibition development, design, and project management, including the $12M Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Latin American Art addition to the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA). Prior to accepting the commission to work with the CTHM, Allen completed several exhibitions in Waco, Albany and San Antonio.
Exhibit Designers Drew Patterson and Pony AllenBehind every successful museum is outstanding volunteer support. The CTHM could not run without its Deputies – those volunteers who provide the public face of
the institution by serving as docents. The CTHM would like to salute our volunteer team: Deputies, you make it possible for the CTHM to engage the public through your dedication. Thank you!
